  • What programming language is good for a beginner and for a hobby? [closed]

    Possible Duplicates: What is the easiest language to start with? What programming language should I choose for an independent study language? Well as the title says what language is good for a beginner and for a hobby? I'll probably be making some games or desktop apps with a gui most likely. I'll be working in Windows and Linux. Oh and could you also give some links to tutorials for the language?

  • How to determine edges in an image optimally?

    I recently was put in front of the problem of cropping and resizing images. I needed to crop the 'main content' of an image for example if i had an image similar to this: the result should be an image with the msn content without the white margins(left& right). I search on the X axis for the first and last color change and on the Y axis the same thing. The problem is that traversing the image line by line takes a while..for an image that is 2000x1600px it takes up to 2 seconds to return the CropRect = x1,y1,x2,y2 data. I tried to make for each coordinate a traversal and stop on the first value found but it didn't work in all test cases..sometimes the returned data wasn't the expected one and the duration of the operations was similar..     Hi, I'm a college student majoring in computer science. I know java and will be learning C++ the next couple years at school. I want to add another language to my repertoire and have gotten conflicting advice: Ruby, Python, Perl, JavaScript, PHP, AJAX, among others. I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on the relative value of each of these languages in the job market, the ease of learning of each of the languages, and just personal preferences when it comes to the languages mentioned above. Approach2 ------ input-selector-> Queue->AduioParser->AudioSink | Souphttpsrc->tsdemux---multiqueue>| | ------- Queue->videoParser->VideoSink But there is no delay is observed in approach2. Can anyone please explain the reason behind this ? what is the specialty of multiqueue here?

    I am using OpenCV sample code “peopledetect.cpp” to detect and track pedestrians. The code uses HoG for feature extraction and SVM for classification. Please find the reference paper used here. The camera is mounted on the wall at a height of 10 feet and 45 degree down. There is no restriction on the pedestrian movement within the frame. I want to track the detected pedestrians’ movement within the frame. The issue I am facing is pedestrians are detected only in the middle region of the frame as most of the features are not visible as soon as the pedestrian enters the frame region. I want to track each person’s movement in the entire frame region. How to do it? Is tracking required? Can anyone give any reference to blogs/codes?

  • What is the benefits and drawbacks of using header files?

    I had some experience on programming languages like Java, C#, Scala as well as some lower level programming language like C, C++, Objective - C. My observation is that low level languages separate out header files and implementation files while other higher level programming language never separate it out. They use some identifiers like public, private, protected to do the jobs of header files. I saw one benefit of using header file (in some book like Code Complete), they talk about that using header files, people can never look at our implementation file and it helps with encapsulation. A drawback is that it creates too many files for me. Sometimes, it looks like verbose. It is just my thought and I don't know if there are any other benefits and drawbacks that people ever see and work with header file This question may not relate directly to programming but I think that if I can understand better about programming to interface, design software.

Currently I am using the simpleanalyzer, as it seems to handle the broadest amount of languages. Most of the documents to be indexed will be english, but there will be the occasional double-byte language indexed as well.     What are the things that Java (the language and platform) got categorically right? In other words, what things are more recent programming languages preserving and carrying forward? Some easy answer are: garbage collection, a VM, lack of pointers, classloaders, reflection(?) What about language based answers? Please don't list the things Java did wrong, just right. (note by Mark Harrison) This is an interesting and useful question, especially for those of us who don't use java regularly. I'm voting for reopening.
