  Ok sorry if this is the most basic question in the world but for years I have needed more ethernet ports in my room and my whole house is wired with 1 ethernet port in each room, I also wanted to be able to plug into the room ethernet port with another router to get more plugins and that wasn't possibe I don't think. So can you plug a switch into this and have more ports with just as much speed?

  Related to : Cmd-Tab does not bring iTunes to foreground There people claim that command+h will continue to work, but the behavior I'm seeing is: Launch a full screen Terminal instance (or anything else really) Launch a fresh iTunes command+h to hide it command+tab back to iTunes, this works and the main app window is given focus command+tab to Terminal command+tab to iTunes What I expect to happen: the main iTunes window is brought to the foreground and given focus. What does happen: The application menu bar shows iTunes, but an additional command+` is needed to bring the main app to foreground. I thought it might have been related to a Chrome interaction, since I'm usually commmand+tabbing between my browser and everything else, but that does not seem to be the case. I do have two "plugins" running: last.fm scrobbler Alfred app mini itunes player interface Not sure if either of those create some phantom window or something that is mixing something up. Versions of stuff: OS X: 10.6.5 iTunes: 10.1.1 (4) last.fm: can't find it, but it's recent Alfred: 0.8 (89) So after that big long rant, anyone else seeing this behavior?

As i can't check the computers every time a meeting ends, i'd like to find a tool, preferably running on windows, that can monitor some cisco switch ports state, and every time a cable is being unplugged, send me an email. I know that some monitoring solutions can do that already, but i wonder if something simplier (and preferably cheap / free of course !) exists.

• Local and public IPs on the same switch?

  It's all pretty much in the title. Is it possible to assign both local and public IPs to different nodes connected to the same switch? I have 4 servers with 2 gigabit ethernet ports each. I want one of each to have a public IP, and the remaining ports to have local IPs for server-to-server traffic. Sorry if it's a dumb question. I didn't see anything about it on here already.

• Why use an OO approach instead of a giant "switch" statement?

  I am working in a .Net, C# shop and I have a coworker that keeps insisting that we should use giant Switch statements in our code with lots of "Cases" rather than more object oriented approaches. His argument consistently goes back to the fact that a Switch statement compiles to a "cpu jump table" and is therefore the fastest option (even though in other things our team is told that we don't care about speed). I honestly don't have an argument against this...because I don't know what the heck he's talking about. Is he right? Is he just talking out his ass? Just trying to learn here.

I need to create the torrent programmatically, I can't have a window pop-up.   So I have this problem with strings and switch-case, and I'll try to keep it as simple as possible. Here event.keyCode has the value "65", and is the result of a keydown event of 'a' (using JQuery). if (event.keyCode == "65") { alert("hmmmm"); } That works, but: switch (event.keyCode) { case '65': alert("Yay!"); break; } That doesn't. However this will work: switch ('65') { case '65': alert("Yay!"); break; } And if I do this: var t = '65'; switch (t) { case '65': alert("Yay!"); break; } It works. And then I tried this: var t = event.keyCode; switch (t) { case '65': alert("Yay!"); break; } But it fails! So why does it match in the if-block at the beginning, but not for the switch-case?

  I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter/switch do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

  Hi all, I'm trying to deploy a Snort box in my LAN. I have a Linksys SRW248G4 and trying to configure Port mirroring so that Snort can listen everything on the network in promiscuous mode. So in ADMIN / Port Mirroring, I have 3 things: Source Port (e1,...e48, g1...g4) Type (Rx, Tx, Both) Target (e1...e48, g1...g4) Last time I played with it, I killed all traffic on the switch, I had to reboot it several times... so now I'm asking question before: Do I need to configure each Source Port (from 1 to 48) to forward to the single promiscuous port ? 48 rules !?   Hi, I have a Brocade SAN Fabric Switch, a 200E. When using the web based management interface "SwitchExplorer" I can click the port, and I see "Port Administration Services". In the first screen of data that appreas, there's a row called "Health" which has value "Unmonitored". Do you know how to set this port to be Monitored? And if also - what "Health" monitoring does?   I want to be able to route between two vlans that I have created and I am not sure how to go about it. So I have created, VLAN 5 with IP Address 192.168.5.1/24 and VLAN 10 with IP Address 192.168.0.1/24 //main IP addresses that I use. How would I be able to get (for example) the IP Address 192.168.0.144 to see any ip addresses in 192.168.5.1/24? Also do you have to set a default gateway for each VLAN or do you set the default gateway for the switch.

  Have a MacPro (snow leopard) connected to an (windows standard) Asus 25" monitor via a DVI--VGA adapter. Now the boss wants me to work from home, so I want to share my Asus display with a Windows XP laptop. No doubt once my wife sees this, she will want to do the same thing, but with a Windows 7 laptop. So what I would like, I think, is your recommendations for a KVM switch (or better solution) that allows the Mac and a (windows 7 or windows xp) laptop to share the Asus display. Bonus marks if they can share Apple keyboard and magic mouse, but am quite happy to use separate mouse keyboards. The MacPro is the one that is always connected, the laptops come and go. Any ideas? But before entering the second command, I press the up arrow key to review the first command, then I find I have to hold backspace for 30-or so characters. (I can't just press down again to get an empty line. Nor can I get it by pressing up again.)

  I'm trying to use the FOR command in Windows XP's command line. I have a file temp.txt with 3 lines: temp1 temp2 temp3 And I'm typing the following command at the prompt: for /F %p in (temp.txt) do echo Testing %p Nothing comes back. If I remove the /F parameter, the output is Testing temp.txt. As far as I can determine, I'm using the command exactly as it is documented by Microsoft. I've checked my registry to make sure Command Extensions are on, and even started a new shell with cmd /e:on to be doubly sure. What am I doing wrong? Yes, I was doing something wrong. The file temp.txt wasn't created from scratch, I just edited it to put in my test content. Unfortunately when I created the file the first time, I saved it with a UTF-8 marker at the front. Recreating the file as plain text solved the problem.
