• InterVLAN routing on a HP V1910 series switch

  Recently bought a HP V1910-16G switch (former 3com 29??) with IPv4 routing capabilities. After unpacking I did a firmware upgrade to the latest 5.20 Release 1513P06. I did set up additional VLANs (#2 and #3) and VLAN interfaces for those. The problem is that connected PCs on different VLAN's can't ping each other. Looks like VLAN routing doesn't even work. So here's my setup: VLAN ID VLAN interface 1 10.0.0.21/24 2 10.0.5.1/24 3 10.0.6.1/24 Have one PC connected to VLAN 2 (IP address 10.0.5.2, default gateway 10.0.5.1) and a second PC connected to VLAN 3 (IP address 10.0.6.2, default gateway 10.0.6.1) Routing table: Destination IP Mask Next Hop 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.21 10.0.0.21 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1 10.0.5.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.5.1 10.0.5.1 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1 10.0.6.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.6.1 10.0.6.1 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1 The first PC can't ping the second PC one and vice versa. They only can ping their own gateways and that's all. What I'm doing wrong?

• Is there a switch that will connect directly to my modem and allow my router to serve only as a WiFi connection?

I am experiencing problems with network speeds and reliability on both wired and wireless connections. On many occasions I experience WiFi Speeds that vary between the 15mbps to 0.50 mbs (or less) and ping ranging from 15ms to 500ms. These results are from when I notice problems with internet lag and run speedtest.net to get details of problems. I have a stretched out floor-plan and old building materials drastically affecting my cellphone signal strength as well). After Reading the "Known Issues" Section on the webpage below http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3700#Known_Issues I bought the switch and Cat6 cable to increase speed and relieve stress on router in an attempt to fix the symptoms. I thought I'd use the router in a Modem\Switch\Router configuration. I thought I'd only have to use the router for mobile WiFi connections like android or Laptops when necessary (hopefully eliminating the problem caused by the router when subjected to all those demanding Ethernet connections) When I started unboxing the switch, I noticed the manual of this DGS-1008G shows it being connected in the Modem\Router\Switch order and not in the Modem\Switch\Router configuration I was aiming for. I have not been able to find a solid plan to remedy my specific problem without buying another expensive router. I would like to get the speeds I am paying for without buying another router. (My WiFi Adapters would also need to be updated if new router is required, meaning more $$$). I can always sell the switch and get a better one that will bypass the router because my most demanding internet connections are Wired. . . Questions Can I accomplish a Modem\Switch\Router configuration with current switch? Is there a different way to get the wired speed I need while providing WiFi only when necessary? . .

• Can I nest a command string within another command string?

  Whenever I run the following command in an elevated command prompt, I get the 0x80070005 Access Denied error code. I'm assuming it's a permissions error for the child shell. I'm running the command in an elevated prompt on Winddows 7 Pro SP1. FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-* 9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart" Can place the "Runas" command within the already nested command in order to run the child shell as an admin? I don't think I can because of conflicts with quotation mark locations. If there's another way to do this, such as via a batch file, I'm open to alternative methods, although I do prefer running it as a single string. Sidenote1: Ignore the space after the first asterisk in the command string. It was added one for aesthetics & accuracy. Sub-question: Could I use this "fix" to circumnavigate the problem entirely? • Fake demostration software for command line

  I'm looking for some software that would be useful for giving demonstrations. I regularly have to show the effects of scrips ect to classes while talking about their effects, and equaly regularly I have finger trouble and have to rewrite various commands - wasting class time and general energy. I'd like to be able to record a sequence of commands in advance, and then play them back at the speed of my choosing. So I might have a file that containes the commands: echo "hello world!" ls ls -l ls -l | sort I'd like to be able to play these commands back by typing similar ones in. So I'd have a blinking command prompt and if I typed 'echo "hxxx' the command prompt would read home$echo "hell and if I typed any other letters the terminal would fill up with the remainder of the command until I press enter, when it executes the command. The point is that even if I screw up the command when typing it, the command that I'd prepared in advance would be executed. My question is - does similar software exist for giving demonstrations? or even, is this an easy thing to script up...? EDIT - two quick things first of all I'm on osx - but it would be nice to get a general solution for other people who arrive here from google. and second a lot of the comments/answers are concentrating on, in effect, making it fast and easy to enter long commands by means of hotkeys and the like. Actually I'd like it to at least look like I'm typing live - that's why I put in the bit about the one-to-one keymapping, but I don't think I explained that quite as well as I could have...

• svn:switch doesn't work with relative svn:external?

  We have a subfolder that is a relative svn external (../project/subfolder). In a fresh trunk checkout it points to (...TRUNK/project/subfolder) and in a fresh branch checkout it points to (...BRANCH/branchName/project/subfolder). But if you do a switch on the project containing the subfolder, the subfolder stays pointing at TRUNK. Alternately if you do a BRANCH checkout and switch to TRUNK it stays pointing at BRANCH. Shouldn't an svn:switch update relative externals? Is there some sort of recursive svn:switch I should be running?

  So i'd like to do this: switch (keyPath) { case @"refreshCount": //do stuff case @"timesLaunched": //do other stuff } but apparently you can only use integers as the switch quantity. Is the only way to do this parse the string into an integer identifier and then run the switch statement? like this: nsinteger num = nil; if (keyPath isEqual:@"refreshCount") { num = 0 } if (keyPath isEqual:@"timesLaunched") { num = 1 } I'm trying to optimize this code to be as quick as possible because its going to get called quite often. thanks, Nick

  I have been playing with the Command Window in Visual Studio (View-Other Windows-Command Window). It is great for several mouse-free scenarios. (The autocompleting file "Open" command rocks in a non-trivial solution.) That success got me thinking and experimenting: Possibility 1.1: You can use the Alias commands to create custom commands Possibility 1.2: You can use the Shell command to run arbitrary executables and specify parameters (and pipe the result to the output or command windows) Possibility 2: A previously setup external tool definition (with project-relative path variables) could be run from the command window What I am stuck on is: There doesn't appear to be a way to send parameters to an aliased command (and thus the underlying Shell call) There doesn't appear to be a way to use project/solution relative paths ($SolutionDir/$ProjectDir) on a Shell call Using absolute paths in Shell works, but is fragile and high-maintenance (one alias for each needed use case). Typically you want the command to run against a file relative to your project/solution. It seems you can't run the traditional external tools (Tools-External Tools...) in the command window Ultimately I want the external tool functionality in the command window in some way. Can anyone see a way to do this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? So my questions: Can an "external tool" of some sort (using relative project/solution path parameters) be used in the Command Window? If yes, How? If no, what might be a suitable alternative?

  I would like to use an enum value for my switch statment in C++. Is it possible to use the enum values enclosed in the "{}" as choices for the "switch()"? I know that switch() needs an integer value in order to direct the flow of programming to the appropriate case number. If this is the case, do I just make a variable for each constant in the 'enum' statment?   One of the most popular question I get after watching my MySQL courses on Pluralsight is that beginning users are not able to find where they have installed MySQL Server. The error they receive is as follows when they type mysqld command on their default command line. ‘mysql‘ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This error comes up if user try to execute mysqld command on default command prompt. The user should execute this command where mysql.exe file exists.  If you are using Windows Explorer you can easily search on your drive mysqld.exe and find the location of the file and execute the above command there. However, if you want to find out with command prompt the location of mysqld.exe file you can follow the direction here. Step 1: Open a command prompt Open command prompt from Start >> Run >> cmd >> enter Step 2: Change directory You need to change the default directory to root directory, hence type cd\ command on the prompt to change the default directory to c:\ . Here we are assuming that you have installed MySQL on your c: drive. If you have installed it on any other drive change the drive to that letter. Step 3: Search Drive Type the command dir mysqld.exe /s /p on the command prompt. It will search your directories and will list the directory where mysqld.exe is located. Step 4: Change Directory Now once again change your command prompt file location to the folder where your mysqld.exe is located. In my case it is located here in folder C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin hence I will run following command: cd C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin . Step 5: Execute mysqld.exe Now you can once again mysqld.exe on your command prompt. You can use this method to search pretty much any file with the help of command prompt. Now the former switch send the later switch a 802.1Q-tagged Ethernet frame. What should the later switch do? Drop the frame? Forward the frame? Undefined behavior?   I found out about ForceBindIP and I really love it, so much that I am using it regularly enough to where spamming the same command prompt over and over again is getting painful. Here's ForceBindIP and what it does: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/forcebindip/ I'm on a 64-bit of Windows 7 Home Premium. What I want to do is add a right-click context menu item so that when I browse items in Windows Explorer, or on my desktop, I can automate a ForceBindIP command (through the prompt). I am permanently connected to two networks: one over ethernet, and one over wireless. My ethernet network takes priority. What I want to do is add a "Run through wireless network" context menu item, that will send the item through this command: ForceBindIP {5F657824-9E3B-46E5-C21E-F52585R6457E} "[path to right-clicked file here]" It will need to run that command in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. I've no experience at all playing with the Windows registry or writing batch files, anything of that sort. I was wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to assist me?

  I need to start using GIT for my projects from now on and I need to use some UNIX commands. but no matter what I do, I always receive "command not found" error. I installed MacPorts, but still cant run any UNIX command :/ When I try ls, I get the error below, same for sudo, or any other command: -bash: ls: command not found and when I try $PATH, I get the lines below: hakan-yilmaz-MacBook-Pro:~ hakanyilmaz$ **$PATH** -bash: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:/opt/subversion/bin/:PATH: No such file or directory I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.6 I spent 2-3 days and kept googling and trying everything I found at forums, but no success. SOLUTION: I opened .bash_profile with TextWrangler and removed everything else than export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH Then, I reboot that Mac, and WORKING!!!!

• Cisco FC SAN switch decision

  I've got to buy a bunch of FC SAN switches in the next week or so, I have to, and want to, buy Cisco MDSs. Servers are HP BL490c G6's in C7000 chassis with Virtual-Connect Flex-10 ethernet interconnects and VC FC interconnects (Emulex HBAs btw), all running ESX 3.5U4 (for now). I think I've only really got two choices; MDS 9509's with dual-supervisors with a single 48-port 4Gb FC card MDS 9222i's with single supervisor and the built-in 18-FC-port/4-GigE-FCIP-port option Both have the same functionality (I think, buying the enterprise licence btw), both have plenty enough performance and adequate ports for now and the next three years. The 9222i's are about 55% the price of the 9509's - logic says get the 'i's but will I really miss the dual-supervisors? I've got lots of 9509's with dual-supervisors that I'm very happy with but I'm not sure I've every benefitted from the dual-sups in the past and they are nearly twice the price - but if I don't buy them and miss them I can't retrofit them later. What are your thoughts?

  I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

  I have two 48 port gigabit netgear switches with 2 SFP ports each (i also have two Mini-GBIC copper transceiver modules) Is it best to set the ports up by using the built in ports (ie plug port 1 of switchB into port 48 of switchA and port1 of switchA into the router) or is there an advantage to using the mini-gbic? • Win7 Command Prompt drives not available

  I have the opposite problem compared to the author of this question: Hard drive access denied from Windows Explorer (but works from command prompt as Admin) I can see all the drive letters for a particular server in Windows Explorer, and can navigate through them exactly as would be expected. The drive letters are displayed in Explorer in parens to the right of the path info -- finalpathportion (\\server\otherpathportions) (driveletter:) e.g. jmerrill (\\server\users) (H:) But the drive letters are not usable in a "Run as Administrator" command prompt. They have worked in the past, but I have since rebooted. I thought that perhaps I had to start a new command prompt having visited them in Explorer -- but that did not help. "net use" in the command prompt shows Unavailable H: \\server\users\jmerrill Microsoft Windows Network with similar info for the other drives. I can do net use h: /d net use h: \\server\users\jmerrill for each drive, and get the letters to be available in the command prompt. It is perhaps obvious that I don't think that it should be necessary to do that. Does anyone have any ideas?

  I have a thumb drive on which I take many of my files with me. I would like to synchronize it with my computer automatically when I connect it. I currently have a script run every time I connect it so that I can do the many things that need to be done when it connects (check for updates to the portable applications, etc.). I want my synchronization utility to: Detect conflicts work correctly when I move files or change the folder structure tell the difference between a file that was deleted on one side and a file that was added on the other work from the command line or at least have a command that will open up a window provide a confirmation screen before doing anything The Windows Briefcase does all of these except the command line. Is there any program that does all of these, or is there a way to synchronize the briefcase from the command line?
