• What makes an effective UI for displaying versioning of structured hierarchical data

  Traditional version control system are displaying versioning information by grouping Projects-Folders-Files with Tree view on the left and details view on the right, then you will click on each item to look at revision history for that configuration history. Assuming that I have all the historical versioning information available for a project from Object-oriented model perspective (e.g. classes - methods - parameters and etc), what do you think will be the most effective way to present such information in UI so that you can easily navigate and access the snapshot view of the project and also the historical versioning information? Put yourself in the position that you are using a tool like this everyday in your job like you are currently using SVN, SS, Perforce or any VCS system, what will contribute to the usability, productivity and effectiveness of the tool. I personally find the classical way for display folders and files like above are very restrictive and less effective for displaying deep nested logical models. Assuming that this is a greenfield project and not restricted by specific technology, how do you think I should best approach this? I am looking for idea and input here to add values to my research project. Feel free to make any suggestions that you think is valuable. Thanks again for anyone that shares their thoughts.

• What program should I write to use up the 3,472 minutes on my iPhone 3GS?

I've got an iPhone 3GS that I use only for development and over the months I've accumulated 3,472 rollover minutes (my primary phone is an Android G-1). It seems a shame to let these minutes go to "waste." What cool iPhone app would you like to see that uses these minutes up in a productive, interesting, and possibly cool way. • "Low level" project using Java

  I'm wondering if it would make sense to do some low level or OS stuff(a project) using Java. Reason why I ask is because I would like to expand my knowledge in Java and I'm into doing stuff like file compressor, bulk file renamer, etc. Are there any examples out there that I can look at or play with? • Generic file container for quick read of data

  Since there are some major privacy issues with alot of social networking sites I am trying to think about alternatives. One is to let the user keep all the information stored in some kind of file container. Now, I haven't found a single type of container that can hold "generic" information. Only for audio/video. What I want is a container that can be read by PHP with some kind of index file that lists up the users pictures in a image/ directory in the container, FOAF files (or some alternative XML-file describing users information and friends, etc.). My thoughts was to let the user keep all their information and data stored in a container that can be imported/exported and deleted from my server (the prototype social networking site I am trying to create), and then uploaded to another site that might use the same format (not that I think that will ever happen, but the user still keeps all their pictures, data, comments, messages, etc). The only thing I have come up with yet is to create a tar archive with the Archive_tar library which extracts and creates Tar-archives with an index-file describing which files are holding the messages (there might be several so each file won't be so large), what pictures are in the image/ folder and what are their names and what comments they have gotten etc. Maybe also the permissions for viewing each type of content. Does there exist any generic file format of a container that I can use to keep all this information in one file with a tree-like index file? Or must i try and create something like this myself?

• Video/ Speech Development of Applications

  Why do we continue to type and click away in IDEs when we could theoretically use hand gestures and speech to develop applications? Think about it - Developing a class by standing in-front of your computer, making some gesture, and yelling "CAR!". This doesn't have to strictly apply to OOP either. We have sufficient speech and image acquisition/ processing and analysis tools available to us, don't we? This seems plausible to me, but I may be overly ambitious. From a conceptual point-of-view, do you see any problems with the implementation?

I would cover basic c++ first week, and start the project second week. What I need is a project that is doable (for them) in 2 weeks. It is interesting.   For my master thesis I wanted to design a small multiplayer game which includes more than one player(maybe 5), has 2-3 players collaborating at a time to achieve some task. The most important thing is realistic simulation of the movable objects in the scene which more than one player should simultaneously interact with. I would also prefer large virtual environments (VEs) like mmogs where groups of players are interacting in different areas of the VE. tasks for players should include 2-3 players touching movable objects at same time. e,g, a very basic task can be users lifting a cube together and pushing it through a hole I am not new to designing virtual environments with openGL, but have never designed games before and rarely play other than few of my favorite ones like Fifa. I wanted some ideas on what kind of games should I look at which should help me with ideas for my tasks for the users to gain points and win in games? any current indie games which might inspire me?

• Is it possible to procure venture capital based on in-progress ideas? [migrated]

  I hope this is not the wrong forum for this question, but I can't find one in the Stack Exchange "family" that would be more appropriate. I have ideas for two web sites which I think will be quite popular (they are totally unrelated to each other). I am a programmer, and a "creative" (photographer, author, musician). So I have the "vision" as well as the technical know-how to bring these websites into being. My "problem" is that I'm champing at the bit to complete them, and don't have much time to work on them (being employed fulltime, etc.) If I continue to work on them in my so-called spare time, it will probably be a year or more before they are both done. If I was in a position to work on them fulltime (IOW, if I had a "silent partner" willing to invest enough money that I could quit my job), I could have them complete in about three months. I would be willing to partner with somebody or some group who would back me financially in this way. My vision/work combined with their monetary investment could bring about "great things" or at least moderately great things. I know you can "crowd fund" startups and so on, but for that you need to expose your idea. My ideas are not something I would want to make public, as somebody might "steal" them. I'm willing to discuss them with serious individual potential investors, though (provided they were willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement). Does anybody have any recommendation on how I might find a suitable partner[s] for this/these ventures?

I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Ubuntu 13.04 Eclipse 3.8.1 fresh install..cannot read Eclipse help files..ideas?

  I have recently setup a dual boot windows 7 /Ubuntu 13.04. Problem: I installed eclipse from the Ubuntu software center. Eclipse opens fine, but when i attempt to access the help i get a "server error 500".. What i know: the help file is located locally and read via the browser.. any ideas?.. nb.. novice linux user, happy to try anything to provide more data, ppls just be specific (ie assume i know zilch..) update jun 30th.. • client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? I've of course already removed the file from the server, but I've never seen code like this so I'm rather curious as to its origin. Where could I go to find more info about something like this?

• Protecting design ideas from being copied by other websites?

  Hi everyone, I'm planning a project at the moment, while building a completely different project at the same time. Both of these projects are quite innovative in the way they either work or the way they are presented. One of the projects hasn't been done before, and the other is being made has competition, but I feel the competitions websites are light years behind what I'm doing. Is there a way for me to prevent the way my sites work or presented from being stolen? I've thought of patenting parts of them, but it requires £10,000 and I don't have that amount of money. Also, would me putting a Copyright notice on the site or an All Rights Reserved tag give me any muscle when going to websites that I feel have stolen my ideas (if they have)? Cheers!

• Implementation ideas to store multiple files within a single file for faster access?

• I am receiving a message saying I have duplicate sources but I can't seem to find a duplicate of the line described, any ideas?

• apache2 is making my amazon ec2 unavailable, any ideas?

  I have a web server running on a EC2 c1.medium intance. The instance is running on ubuntu, with apache2 and mysql.The ubuntu and apache version are the next; Ubuntu DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=11.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.04" Apache2 Server version: Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) Server built: Feb 22 2011 18:33:02 Sometimes randomly, my server "hangs up", I cannot connect to it using normal web access or ssh access. If I reboot the instance it reboots fine, the amazon system log doesn't show anything weird, but the problem persists The only way to solve it its stopping the instance, and start it again. I think that the problem its has something to do with apache, because the last lines of the error log lists: normal errors [Sun Jun 19 06:25:09 2011] [notice] Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.3.5-1ubuntu7.2 with Suhosin-Patch configured -- resuming normal operations nobody cant connetc... no more erros until i stop and start the instance normal errors [Wed Jun 22 14:21:18 2011] [notice] Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.3.5-1ubuntu7.2 with Suhosin-Patch configured -- resuming normal operations nobody cant connetc... no more erros until i stop and start the instance Can somebody please help me?
