• Can I use Ubuntu One Icons for 3rd party thingy?

  So I am wondering what the guide lines are for using Ubuntu One icons as I have heard from a number of people that Ubuntu One has some propitiatory things to it. • Why I LOVE Dell

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. • Best practices on separating Update and Draw on game loop

  I've been working on my first HTML5 prototype and I found a good model that uses the regular Update and Draw loop we see in game dev. My question is, where does one end and the other begins? The question popped when I wanted to rotate and draw an Image, and I kept wondering if the work of changing the tranformation matrix (that I presume would be a bit expensive since it works on the whole pixel array of an image) and calculating the right position do draw it would characterize drawing work, or maybe not, since after that I may need to check for collision or something similar. Thinkig of it, seems like a silly question, but I would like some advice from more experienced developers. Where does does update ends and draw starts? Thanks in advance.

  Here is how I've been trying to implement delta time based on different internet resources. var startTime:Number = getTimer(); game.Update(deltaTime); deltaTime = Number(getTimer() - startTime) * 0.001; My issue with this is it doesn't seem to be giving me accurate timing. The main update shows the frame time at 0.001 and when reinitializing the level it goes to 0.002. I'm using dt else where for a timer and later on time based physics so I would like it to work as expected. I must be missing something silly.

  I am trying to make available on my website a voice chat for a small group of people that allows some other means to interact such as text messaging, photo sharing, file sharing, simple drawing and silly games. In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. Low-level programming is fine if required, but platform dependency isn't that much preferred.

• wordpress restored from backup asking for ftp

  I backed up my /var/www/wordpress folder to my external harddisk and restored it back. Now when I add a new plugin I am asked for ftp access to my localhost. I wonder why ? As far as I could go /var/www/wordpress and its subfolders/files are own'ed by root. I have logged in to my wordpress as admin root. I dont know why I need to setup ftpd, but I tried that too. • How to login after modifying ~/.profile wrongly

  I did something very silly a few weeks ago. I wanted to add a path so that the OS could find some manually installed executable. Instead of typing 'PATH=xxx:$PATH;export PATH' at the end of the ~/.profile file where xxx is the directory in which the executable lies, I accidentally typed 'PATH=xxx;export PATH'. After I logged out I was unable to login anymore as I probably messed up the whole PATH variable and reinstalled the whole thing. My question is: is there a way of rectifying the situation if I happen to add the path wrongly (hopefully not!) in future?

• If you should only have one assertion per test; how to test multiple inputs?

  I'm trying to build up some test cases, and have read that you should try and limit the number of assertions per test case. So my question is, what is the best way to go about testing a function w/ multiple inputs. For example, I have a function that parses a string from the user and returns the number of minutes. The string can be in the form "5w6h2d1m", where w, h, d, m correspond to the number of weeks, hours, days, and minutes. If I wanted to follow the '1 assertion per test rule' I'd have to make multiple tests for each variation of input? That seems silly so instead I just have something like: self.assertEqual(parse_date('5m'), 5) self.assertEqual(parse_date('5h'), 300) self.assertEqual(parse_date('5d') ,7200) self.assertEqual(parse_date('1d4h20m'), 1700) In the one test case. Is there a better way?

• Installed thinkfan, should I keep it?

  Well I did fixed my overheating problem on my Lenovo T500 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. At the same time I did install Thinkfan. But since I have a solution for overheating now, I would like to know if there is any really good reason to keep it? My fan speed without it was cca 3000 RPM. When it installed droped to 2500RPM in idle time. Thinkpad have very quiet fans, so I don't really hear the noise when is on 3000RPM (no difference between 2000 or 3000 RPM). Is it better for processor to have more air or more air brings just more dust? Silly question but I would REALLY want to know the reason of keeping thinkfan.

• Can I do a git merge entirely remotely?

  My team shares a "work" branch and a "stable" branch. Whenever a particular work branch is approved for further testing/release/etc, we merge it into stable. No code is ever checked directly into the stable branch. Because of this, merge conflicts simply won't happen, and it seems silly to pull down the work branch and the stable branch, merge them, and then push the changes back. Is there a git command to ask a remote git server to commit a merge of two branches that it already knows about?

• reasonably priced registrar for obscure tlds like .tt

  I'm looking to buy a .tt domain name, however the only registrars I can find want from between $500 to $3000 for one domain. Considering I can buy a .com for around $10 a year, I consider that not very reasonable! It's going to be for a personal blog site (non monetised), hence why I'm not willing to spend over $500 a year on it. Does anyone know of any registrars that sell obscure tld's such as .tt for reasonable price? As for my definition of "reasonable", I understand it's not a .com and I'm going to have to pay more, but $3000 is just silly! In my opinion I'd say anything under $100 is reasonable.

• Coding with laptop and external screen - neck, back, comfort ...

  Guess I'm not the only one here coding on laptop + external keyboard + external screen. I can't really decide. Figure 1: Putting screen directly in front of (upright) my eyes and move laptop to the side. That feels like more comfortable but I can't really see so good to 15" laptop which is now quite away. Feels unused. Figure 2: Putting laptop in front of me and move external monitor on side. Feels like more efficient space usage, but I am afraid that my neck/back might start hurting since I need to turn my head often. What do you prefer? Some good advice? Sacrificing health is definitely no option here so that's why I'm worried and asking this silly question. Thanks

I have a file in /media/sda3/SkyDrive untitelds.mpg and I want to copy this file to /home/levan/kdenlive and do not want to delete any thing in kdenlive directory I want to copy a folder from home directory to sda3 and do not want to delete any thing on sda3 directory and opposite I want to cut a folder/file and copy to other place without deleting files in that directory I cut it into.

• How to remove text from file icons ?

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu (Linux). I noticed when creating a .java file or .py gives me an icon, however when I start writing code it overrides the thumbnail into showing text. Is there a way to disable this silly feature ? When I installed Linux Mint on the VM I noticed I was able to accomplish this task by unchecking "Show text in icon". I know they use Namo as their file manager. I read this thread and it did not work. How to stop Nautilus from creating thumbnails of specific file types?

  Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2 has awfull 3d performance and Video Tearing do something about this. Tearing is common issue on linux and makes linux sucks. Ubuntu also is bloated and uses compiz , i hope ubuntu developers should be more serious cause even a noob should know that compiz sucks now. I have no screen tearing and full opengl 3d performance on cinnamon ! And thats why i like linux mint 13. Ubuntu is so slow applications launching time is bigger compared to linux mint or xubuntu and many many times slower compared to arch linux. I was sattisfied before the 12.04 version now i'm just dissapointed..... (downvoters are simply noobs or silly fanboys and they deserve ubuntu)

• Is the "impossible object" possible in computer graphics?

I saw this thing called the "impossible object", while they're many different images of this online, it's suppost to be impossible geometry.   I have read questions on Changing startup sound in Ubuntu and Changing startup music in Ubuntu. I understand how to rename 'desktop-login.ogg' and copy the sound I want as 'desktop-login.ogg'. My question is - is there a way I can play different sounds each time I login? It may sound silly, but if possible I would like to play different sounds. I am guessing that this may be perhaps possible by running some kind of script which replaces/renames the desktop-login.ogg file each time I shutdown, so that a new file is ready to be played on the next startup. But I don't know how to copy a new file from a particular folder to desktop-login.ogg upon each shutdown, nor do I know where the script should reside. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to do it, or if there is an easier way of doing this. Thank you

  I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.
