• How can I use Action Script 3.0 to make random placed Symbols fly by?

  I'm trying to make a simple animation with Flash CS4 and Action Script 3.0 to make a number of Symbols fly by from right to left constantly. What I want is that once a symbol has reached the end of the screen it is destroyed and another one is placed at the start position. I intend to give each symbol a random speed and create a random symbol each time one is 'destroyed'. Any clues where I can start?

• Ipad MPMovieplayerController video loads but automatically pauses when played

  Hello I am trying to get the MPMovieplayerController to work. I load a video everything goes wel i even see the first frame but then it automatically pauses, if i press play it pauses again. In the simulator it works perfectly but on the ipad device it gives the problem. I can even seek through the video and i see the frame i seeked to but nothing plays. Also i thought that maybe it's because the default fonts somehow do not support utf-8 so according to pisa documentation i tried to set fontface in template body in style section. that still gave no results. Does any one have some ideas how to solve this issue?

  I'm trying to parse an XML file with expat, and here's the line where I get bad token exception: <tag k="name" v="???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????" /> xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError: not well-formed (invalid token): line 610127, column 37 The symbols in hex look like: \xd1? Seems like someone wrote this string (Russian alfabet) hitting backspace a few times. I set parser.returns_unicode = True, but this didn't help. The 1st line is <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>. I work with a bz2 file. (bz2.BZ2File) How can I parse the file?

• How can I generate a list of symbols used by a build product from a particular statically linked lib

  Say I have a visual studio project that builds a windows exe or dll from c++ source. The project statically links to several library (.lib) files. I would like to generate the subset of the available functionality in a particular .lib that the project actually links to. A very crude way to achieve this would be to remove the .lib from the linker input list. The error list on the build would then show me all the symbols that could not be found. Is there a better/proper way to generate this list, I'm happy with a solution that can be run as a custom build step in the project or one that runs against a built binary. I've looked at both the linker and dumpbin command line options but have not seen anything appropriate.

• Why do debug symbols so adversely affect the performance of threaded applications on Linux?

  Hi. I'm writing a ray tracer. Recently, I added threading to the program to exploit the additional cores on my i5 Quad Core. In a weird turn of events the debug version of the application is now running slower, but the optimized build is running faster than before I added threading. I'm passing the "-g -pg" flags to gcc for the debug build and the "-O3" flag for the optimized build. Host system: Ubuntu Linux 10.4 AMD64. I know that debug symbols add significant overhead to the program, but the relative performance has always been maintained. I.e. a faster algorithm will always run faster in both debug and optimization builds. Any idea why I'm seeing this behavior?

• Is there an API available that, given text, returns a list of companies with their ticker symbols?

  Ideally I would love to extract exactly what Google Finance's Get Quote functionality does with the predictive search. That's really all that I'm looking for. I don't want to store the data, I just want to be able to search company names/ticker symbols so that I can get the correct symbol. I already have specialized quote functionality in place. Also, the search functionality needs to be intuitive. I've looked through Google Finance API but haven't seen exactly what it is that I'm looking for. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

• C# debugging issue: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame.

  Hi - I'm trying to step into a method referenced in an external dll from a C# web service dll. I'm developing the web service code and can step into it from my Winforms app. The dll I'm trying to step into from the web service was developed by someone else, and I have the dll and pdb files. When I try to step into it I'm getting the message below: 'No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed'. Here is my project setup: .NET 3.5, VS 2008 Professional, IIS 7 running on Vista Ultimate Winforms app WF1.exe, referencing web service dll WS1.dll, in 1 solution on my machine Database access dll DA1.dll compiled by another developer, referenced by WS1.dll DA1.dll and DA1.pdb files located in root directory of WS1 web service project WS1 web service compiled and published to my local IIS, DA1.dll and DA1.pdb files get copied to the IIS WS1 bin directory So far so good and everything works to a point. I break and step into WF1.exe then break and step into a method on WS1.dll no problems. However when I try to step into a method on DA1.dll the error occurs. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Ciaran

• Easiest way to plot values as symbols in scatter plot?

  In an answer to an earlier question of mine regarding fixing the colorspace for scatter images of 4D data, Tom10 suggested plotting values as symbols in order to double-check my data. An excellent idea. I've run some similar demos in the past, but I can't for the life of me find the demo I remember being quite simple. So, what's the easiest way to plot numerical values as the symbol in a scatter plot instead of 'o' for example? Tom10 suggested plt.txt(x,y,value)- and that is the implementation used in a number of examples. I however wonder if there's an easy way to evaluate "value" from my array of numbers? Can one simply say: str(valuearray) ? Do you need a loop to evaluate the values for plotting as suggested in the matplotlib demo section for 3D text scatter plots? Their example produces: However, they're doing something fairly complex in evaluating the locations as well as changing text direction based on data. So, is there a cute way to plot x,y,C data (where C is a value often taken as the color in the plot data- but instead I wish to make the symbol)? Again, I think we have a fair answer to this- I just wonder if there's an easier way?

  I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes?   I'm trying to learn more about library versioning in Linux and how to put it all to work. Here's the context: I have two versions of a dynamic library which expose the same set of interfaces, say libsome1.so and libsome2.so. An application is linked against libsome1.so. This application uses libdl.so to dynamically load another module, say libmagic.so. Now libmagic.so is linked against libsome2.so. Obviously, without using linker scripts to hide symbols in libmagic.so, at run-time all calls to interfaces in libsome2.so are resolved to libsome1.so. This can be confirmed by checking the value returned by libVersion() against the value of the macro LIB_VERSION. So I try next to compile and link libmagic.so with a linker script which hides all symbols except 3 which are defined in libmagic.so and are exported by it. This works... Or at least libVersion() and LIB_VERSION values match (and it reports version 2 not 1). However, when some data structures are serialized to disk, I noticed some corruption. In the application's directory if I delete libsome1.so and create a soft link in its place to point to libsome2.so, everything works as expected and the same corruption does not happen. I can't help but think that this may be caused due to some conflict in the run-time linker's resolution of symbols. I've tried many things, like trying to link libsome2.so so that all symbols are alised to symbol@@VER_2 (which I am still confused about because the command nm -CD libsome2.so still lists symbols as symbol and not symbol@@VER_2), but nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong?

  To be honest I don't have experience working with Apache. I'm just putting the best of my intentions on solving this and don't know if I'm making it right. So any help will be greatly appreciated. We have a php page wich is throwing the following message in the browser: Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data. The logs from /var/log/httpd doesn't seem to help because It seems that the Apache is unable to write any information. So the exception or error is preventing the writing (maybe ocurring in some stage of the process that makes impossible to log?). I've read about the procedure to make dumps of the apache, and here we have the content: Reading symbols from /lib64/libgpg-error.so.0...(no debugging symbols found)...done. Loaded symbols for /lib64/libgpg-error.so.0 Reading symbols from /usr/lib64/php/modules/zip.so...(no debugging symbols found)...done. Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault. 0 0x00007fb828fff712 in zend_hash_find () from /etc/httpd/modules/libphp5.so Missing separate debuginfos, use: debuginfo-install httpd-2.2.15-15.el6.centos.1.x86_64 I've been looking in the PHP files and I haven't found any direct call to zend_hash_find (wich seems to be causing the error).   I am using VS2010, and Silverlight 4. When I run my code the debugging does not work (I get the above error on my breakpoints. When I clean my solution a warning comes up saying that the system cannot find the file specified (a project dll). It is looking in the right path (..\debug), but there is no dll present. I started a new Silverlight 4 project, and get the same error. Sometime's the debugging does work (I am not sure if/what anything changed, but on one occasion I was surprised that my breakpoints worked. After changing one thing the breakpoints stopped working)

  I generally build my openssl libs by doing this: perl Configure VC-WIN32 ms\do_masm nmake -f ms\ntdll.mak nmake -f ms\ntdll.mak test For debugging minidumps, I'd like to get a pdb file for the 2 dlls (while still building them in "release" mode). I've added /Zi to the CFLAGS part of ms\ntdll.mak, but I still get "Binary was not built with debug information" when I look at the in-memory modules in the visual studio debugger. • Linking AS code to symbols defined in an external SWC?

  (apologies ahead of time, I only really know Flash; my Flex experience is basically nil. There may be a very standard and obvious workflow solution that Flex people know about) I have a number of UI elements that are graphically quite complex (they're not components, they're just Sprites). Since it takes a long time to compile them, I've been trying to move them into an external .swc. However, I want to associate some code with these classes, but I don't want to have to recompile the graphical assets every time I make a code change. At the moment I have it set up like this: UI elements are created in a separate FLA and exported to a SWC. In my primary FLA, I have actionscript classes that extend each of the graphical assets in the SWC. For example: external.swc: (some symbol defined in the Library and exported for actionscript in frame 1) class: com.foo.WidgetGraphic base: flash.display.Sprite main.fla: Widget.as: package com.foo { public class Widget extends WidgetGraphic { ... } } This works, but is time-consuming and prone to error. I'd rather be able to avoid having to inherit from each graphical asset, and just define them directly. Is there a better way to do what I'm trying to accomplish? Note: the main concern here is compile time. I don't have any movies or audio or fonts, just a lot of vector art assets that appear to be slowing down my compilation time significantly. When I'm debugging I'm only making code changes, and would rather not have to keep recompiling the art...

• mysql C connector unresolved symbols on Win2k8 but not on XP?

  I have a visual C++ 2008 express project which compiles fine on Windows XP with mysql C connector 6.0.2. When I copy the project over to a Windows Server 2008 x64 machine, it gets a bunch of linker errors like "unresolved external symbol _mysql_server_end@0" "unresolved external symbol _mysql_close@4" "unresolved external _mysql_real_connect@32". Is the mysql C connector 6.0.2 known to not work with Win Server 2008? (Note, the C connector is installed into the same place on both machines, and since I just copied over the project wholesale, it still has the correct libmysql.lib include. The interesting thing is that the errors I get on XP if I remove the libmysql.lib are not the same errors I'm getting on Win2k8, so that's what makes me think it might be an incompatibility...or maybe it's just because win2k8 is x64 and XP is x86?)   Suppose I draw a square on the stage, convert it to a symbol, export it for ActionScript with a classname of "MySquare" (and of course a base class of MovieClip). How is it that in the MySquare constructor, the width and height of this MovieClip are already available? In fact, any named instances in the clip are also available. I'm confused about how the Flash player seems to be able to pre-construct my movie clip by populating its properties and child clips before my constructor for the class ever runs. I thought that it would have to first construct the clip, calling my constructor code, and then construct and add any children, but obviously the player is doing something special for clips designed in the Flash authoring environment.

• Setting up Visual Studio 2010 to step into Microsoft .NET Source Code

  Using the Microsoft Symbol Server to obtain symbol debugging information is now much easier in VS 2010. Microsoft gives you access to their internet symbol server that contains symbol files for most of the .NET framework including the recently announced availability of MVC 2 Symbols.  SETUP In VS 2010 RTM, go to Tools –> Options –> Debugging –> General. Check “Enable .NET Framework source stepping” We get the following dialog box   This automatically disables “Enable My Code”   Go to Debugging –> Symbols and Check “Microsoft Symbol Servers”. You can selectively exclude modules if you want to.   You will get a warning dialog like so: Hitting OK will start the download process   The setup is complete. You are now ready to start debugging! DEBUGGING Add a break point to your application and run the application in debug mode (F5 shortcut for me). Go to your call stack when you hit the break point. Right click on a frame that is grayed out. Select “Load Symbols from” “Microsoft Symbol Servers”. VS will begin a one time download of that assembly. This assembly will be cached locally so you don’t have to wait for the download the next time you debug the app.   We get a one time license agreement dialog box You might see an error like the one below regarding different encoding (hopefully will be fixed).    Assemblies for which the symbols have been loaded are no longer grayed out. Double clicking on any entry in the call stack should now directly take you to the source code for that assembly. AFAIK, not all symbols are available on the MS symbol server. In cases like that you will see a tab like the one below and be given the option to “Show Disassembly”. Enjoy!
