  • Stop YouTube Videos from Automatically Playing in Chrome

    If you’ve actually used the internet before, you’ve probably come across a page with an auto-playing YouTube clip, and chances are good it was a rather annoying one. Here’s how to stop them from starting automatically in Chrome. We’ve already told you how to stop them from automatically playing if you’re a Firefox user (best answer: use Flashblock!), but now it’s time for Chrome users to get their turn. Use the Stop Autoplay for YouTube Extension The great thing about this extension is that it stops the video from playing, but it allows it to continue buffering, so when you do feel like playing the video, it’ll already be downloaded—really useful for people with slower internet connections. There’s no UI or anything fancy, just head to the extension page and click the Install button. If you want to get rid of it later, use the Tools –> Extensions menu (or you can type chrome://extensions/ into your address bar), and then click the Uninstall link for that add-on.   Download Stop Autoplay for YouTube [Google Chrome Extensions] Using FlashBlock for Chrome If you really wanted to, you could just disable Flash across the board using FlashBlock for Chrome. Once you’ve installed the extension, you won’t see any Flash elements anywhere, and you’ll have to move your mouse over them and click to enable them each time.   • New channels for Exadata 11.2.3.1.1

    With the release of Exadata 11.2.3.1.0 back in April 2012 Oracle has deprecated the minimal pack for the Exadata Database Servers (compute nodes). From that release the Linux Database Server updates will be done using ULN and YUM. For the 11.2.3.1.0 release the ULN exadata_dbserver_11.2.3.1.0_x86_64_base channel was made available and Exadata operators could subscribe their system to it via linux.oracle.com. With the new 11.2.3.1.1 release two additional channels are added: a 'latest' channel (exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_latest) a 'patch' channel (exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch) The patch channel has the new or updated packages updated in 11.2.3.1.1 from the base channel. The latest channel has all the packages from 11.2.3.1.0 base and patch channels combined.  From here there are three possible situations a Database Server can be in before it can be updated to 11.2.3.1.1: Database Server is on Exadata release < 11.2.3.1.0 Database Server is patched to 11.2.3.1.0 Database Server is freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0 In order to bring a Database Server to 11.2.3.1.1 for all three cases the same approach for updating can be used (using YUM), but there are some minor differences: For Database Servers on a release < 11.2.3.1.0 the following high-level steps need to be performed: Subscribe to el5_x86_64_addons, ol5_x86_64_latest and  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_latest Create local repository Point Database Server to the local repository* install the update * during this process a one-time action needs to be done (details in the README) For Database Servers patched to 11.2.3.1.0: Subscribe to patch channel  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch Create local repository Point Database Server to the local repository Update the system For Database Servers freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0: Subscribe to patch channel  exadata_dbserver_11.2_x86_64_patch Create local  repository Point Database Server to the local repository Update the system The difference between 'situation 2' (Database Server is patched to 11.2.3.1.0) and 'situation 3' (Database Server is freshly imaged to 11.2.3.1.0) is that in situation 2 the existing Exadata-computenode.repo file needs to be edited while in situation 3 this file is not existing  and needs to be created or copied. Another difference is that you will end up with more OFA packages installed in situation 2. This is because none are removed during the updating process.  The YUM update functionality with the new channels is a great enhancements to the Database Server update procedure.     Hello all, I'm writing a CLI for a music-media-platform. One of the features is going to be that you can directly play YouTube videos from the CLI. I don't really have an idea to do it but this one sounded the most reasonable: I'm going to use of those sites where you can download music from YouTube, e.g. http://keepvid.com/ - then I directly stream & play this -- but I have one problem. Is there any Python library capable of doing this and if so, do you have any concrete examples? I've been looking but found nothing, even not with gstreamer. Thanks, William van Doorn

But we need to be able to launch the youtube player by a means other than user tapping the video itself, for various reasons. So I am trying to figure out what event to trigger in javascript to make it happen with no luck.   • FF3/Windows CSS z-index problem with YouTube player

    I'm stuck on what appears to be a CSS/z-index conflict with the YouTube player. In Firefox 3 under Windows XP, Take a look at this page: http://spokenword.org/program/21396 Click on the Collect button and note that the pop-up <div appears under the YouTube player. On other browsers the <div appears on top. It has a z-index value of 999999. I've tried setting the z-index of the <object element containing the player to a lower value, but that didn't work. Any idea how to get the pop-up to appear over the player?

The app got approved in android store whereas itunes rejected it claiming below, "Apps may not use protected third party material such as trademarks, copyrights, patents or violate 3rd party terms of use.     I'm doing something similar to close caption but not exactly the same. I have a youtube video, and I want to display certain messages at specific points in the video. When the video loads, I pull entries from the database in the format time and sentence. For example, at 0:20 the speaker says "don't forget to write down my email that you see on the side" and I want to display the email on the side. At 0:50, he says "and I'll post my office hours" so I want to show those office hours at that time. How can I do this. The video itself is hosted on youtube, but is being displayed on a private website. The div where I want to display the messages is <div id="write">.

With a certain script I can get Youtube Feeds as an image, take a look at the example: JsFiddle I'm trying to do a Jquery click event which will have to invoke another script called 'embedly' like this: $("a").click(function(event) { event.preventDefault(); $(this).embedly({ chars: 220, nostyle: true, key:':41f042ec20b04dda84448dc4a46d357d' }); }); It doesn't seem to work. When I do this from my desktop the click does not invoke the embedly part and also goes to the url regardless of the prevent default.

I know I could do this e.g. with miro, but I will not watch the videos using Miro, want to choose the quality and would like to run it as a cronjob. It should be able to: know which feed entries are new and not download old entries resume (or at least redownload) failed/incomplete downloads from older sessions Are there any complete solutions for this? If not it would be enough for me (maybe even preferable) to just have a command line rss reader that remembers which entries have already been there and writes the new video urls (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FodYFMaI4vQ&feature=youtube_gdata from http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/tedxtalks/uploads) into a file. I could then accomplish the rest using a bash script and youtube-dl. What would be programs usable for this purpose?

    I want to grab a user's uploads (ie: BBC) and limit the output to 10 per page. Whilst I can use the following URL: http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/bbc/uploads/?start-index=1&max-results=10 The above works okay. I want to use the query method instead: The Zend Framework docs: http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.gdata.youtube.html State that I can retrieve videos uploaded by a user, but ideally I want to use the query method to limit the results for a pagination.   • Best Youtube embed player sizes?

    I use tumblr to share videos and, unfortunately, when re-posting a video to your tumblelog it uses the embed code at 400x336px. This is neither widescreen nor very large. So I'm trying to set the player to better size and I'm finding that the youtube player really comes in many sizes. For example, when copying the embed code for and HD video I get the sizes 560x340, 640x385, and 853x505. Then when I look at the embed code for a SD video I get the sizes 425x344, 480x385, and 640x505. I was having the best luck with setting the player to 640 x 505 as it was large enough for HD and perfect for SD. print str_replace( array('400', '336'), array('640', '505'), $video_player_html); Has anyone dealt with trying to find a good standard embed size for a site? One thing that would make this a lot easier is to know whether the video was HD or not - however, that info is not provided in the embed code. I guess I am actually more interested in knowing the right ratio (or specific size) to use that works the best for youtube's mixed content.
