• Develop open-source library and get donations for it?

  I have a nice open-source library in mind to write. It would take a few months to develop properly and I would need to stop supporting myself though other projects. Could anybody share experiences and best-known-methods to get some sort of financial support through the Internet whilst developing free, open-source code? Or, phrased more directly: which systems apart from "PayPal" are in use by programmers to get donations for open-source code? Provide a list. Optionally, sort the list as if it were a recommendation in descending order of positive experiences made with each system. Optionally, share a tidbit of your success story getting this kind of financial support. Optionally: give an indication as to how much money can be made that way? (I heard Vim's author could support himself just with donations at some point?)

• What are the pros and cons of a non-fixed-interval update loop?

  I am studying various approaches to implementing a game loop and I have found this article. In the article the author implements a loop which, if the processing falls behind in time, skips frame renderings and just updates the game in a loop (the last variant called "Constant Game Speed independent of Variable FPS"). I do not understand why it is acceptable to call update_game() in a loop without making sure the update function is called at a particular interval. I do not see any value in doing this. I would think that in my game I want to be sure the game is updated periodically with a known period. So maybe it is worthwhile to have two threads, one would call update periodically, and the other one would redraw the game, also periodically? Would this be a good and practical approach? Of course I would need to synchronise the threads.

• We Heart Discussion Forums (and Know You Do Too)

  It's not generally known, but Oracle (via Oracle Technology Network) hosts one of the largest discussion forums instances (forums.oracle.com) on the planet (founded in 2001), containing nearly 10 million messages from 1 million registered users. That's a whole lot of conversations! And we really, really value those conversations - they span almost every conceivable technical subject across hundreds of products and technologies. More often not - and this is by design - those discussions are stewarded by community volunteers, many of whom are Oracle ACEs (who in fact earned their ACE stripes that way). And so, I am very happy to tell you that we have just initiated a project with our platform partner, Jive Software, to upgrade that platform to the most current, modern version available. The end result should be a vastly improved user experience for everyone involved, in all dimensions. But, I've also done a lot of Java and C# development for applications on the desktop. • XNA: Runtime differences in ClickOnce install versus development version

  I have a game written in XNA, and I use ClickOnce installers to distribute the game to testers. I keep once computer as a test machine which does NOT have development environments installed, so that I can test the installed version. We've found a reproducible bug in our game, but the bug ONLY occurs on the non-development machines that use the ClickOnce installer. The bug is related to some of our code for moving around 3D objects and is not tied to Networking or GamerServices. Are there known differences in the ClickOnce runtime and the version on dev? Are there any best-practices for debugging something like this?

• Update live USB distro?

  I have Lubuntu 14.04 (and Ubuntu 14.04) on a pair of USB disks created by writing the img files to USB using dd on Mac OS X. Unfortunately these systems both have some known bugs (that have since been corrected) and lack certain important drivers for my system (which I have located online). How can I make the USB disks writable and how do I update the distribution upon them as one may do for a locally-installed system? And if I later proceed to install from these USB sticks onto a hard-drive, will they ‘carry’ the package and driver updates with them or will I have to start from scratch again? (I seem to remember from my ancient Windows XP days that such procedures were referred to as ’slipstreaming’ or somesuch on that side of the fence.) (No, I did not create a persistence partition when I created the sticks, because from Mac clearly that isn’t an option. And anyway, as I imperfectly understand it, the persistence partition is for user files and not for the modification of the system.)
