• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • RAM module randomly stopped working

  My laptop is a Dell Inspiron e1505. It came with 2x512 MB of RAM installed, and about a year and a half ago I decided to upgrade it to 2x1 GB. I bought two 1GB memory modules from newegg and installed them, and all worked fine. Just last night my laptop was working fine; this morning I booted up and there was a BIOS warning saying "amount of system memory has changed". I tried reseating the modules, but that didn't fix it. Then I removed each one individually, and determined that one of the sticks appears to no longer be working. This happened very abruptly - I hadn't noticed any problems which might have been indicative of impending failure. Does anybody have any clue what may have caused this, and if there's any hope of making it work again? The memory only had a 30 day warranty, so I can't RMA it.

• Is there a way to submit a batch of commands to a Cisco router and have them execute from the router?

  I need to change the configuration of a remote (6 hours' drive) client's Cisco 871 (IOS 12.4.15T) from my location because of some new internet service at his location. To be more precise, I need to change the default route, ip address of the outside interface (Fa4) and disable the PPPoE setup there. Unfortunately, doing any of this will (obviously) break the connection to the router. I do not have an out-of-band management modem set up (I know, I know). Is there any way to enter the commands I need to have run and have them execute one after the other, from a file on flash:? I have never tried anything like that before. Essentially a DOS-style batch file is exactly what I need. Nothing like it seems to be out there except using kron to execute CLI commands, but that is specified here as only taking EXEC commands, not configuration ones. Is there hope, or do I travel?

• Cable management between multiple racks

  I am in the planning phase of re-cabling our 5 racks in one of our offices and I would like to ask for some guidance on how you go, or would go about managing cables that goes between racks. In our situation we have 5 racks where the furthest to the right is our main patch panel for 300 floor ports. The rack next to it is our main comms rack where main switches and ISP routers are located. the other 3 racks next to the comms rack then all need to connect back to the main comms rack. I am not sure if a 48 port patch panel in each rack would be any good for this scenario? mainly because i am not sure this can be linked back to the main switch with only 1 cable. Would a 48 port switch in each rack be better as you can uplink those back to main switch? Or should we just run cables between racks back to the main switch? Hope someone can offer some guidiance. • URI Scheme, launch program in its directory

  I have registered URI scheme for my app. When I open it with "Run.." or in browser, it runs in hosted directory. For ex. Ive opened url in webpage, program's working dir is in browser. What I want? I want to run program test.exe located at C:\data\test.exe and to use dir. C:\data so it could use other data in relative path. so test.exe would access file .\file.txt without using absolute path Hope I wrote it understandable, sorry for bad English.

• Detect an IP address of a Wireless Access Point device

  I have a Wireless Access Point device (http://www.szedup.com/show.aspx?id=1706), which I am planning to put into BeagleBoard-xM, in order to achieve wireless communication (LAN). However, I can't find it's IP address. I mean, I have to know it's IP address in order to connect with BeagleBoard-xM via a terminal emulator. For the moment, I have this device connected via Ethernet on my router. My router's setting page shows I have this device connected, but no further information. Is there any way to find the IP address of the Wireless Access Point? I hope of being understood. Any help would be really appreciated.

• Do I need a license to create pdf files? [closed]

  I hope this is the correct place where I could ask this question. My mother is an accountant with a degree in economics. She works as a freelancer and she needs some licenses for her job. The biggest problem is adobe acrobat standard, which costs 400€, quite a lot. I want understand if she must buy it to create pdf files or she can use some free (even for commercial use) programs that she has because of her job (the chamber of commerce provide some advantages to accountants). • Why are unicode characters not rendering correctly

  Background: I have some unicode characters in my prompt (git status markers essentially) I'm running urxvt under xfce on arch linux. I'm using DejaVu Sans Mono for Powerline font, specified via .Xresources line: URxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono for Powerline:pixelsize=14 When I start urxvt the unicode characters do not render correctly. For example ? renders as â However, if I then start a new urxvt from inside the first terminal everything renders correctly. There doesn't appear to be any difference in the environment between the two terminals. What could be the difference between the first invocation and the nested invocation? • Generic tool to configure startup applications on Unix

  Is there an automated deployment tool that manages startup applications on a variety of machines, especially the Unices? Or is the only hope to study the nuts and bolts of each Unix (osx, linux, solaris, hpux, aix) on how to configure applications to launch on system startup? I want to run them as a specific user, instead of root. At the moment, I run them all within a screen session .. which is a hassle, as this requires manual intervention every time the machine is rebooted for some reason. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that would read, say, ~/.startup-programs which file contains, on each line, the command line to launch the needed daemons. And this tool should work on OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX ... writing the appropriate startup scripts for each platform.

• No Question mark suddenly É instead. Why?

  Windows xp3. This happens occasionally. Today it happened in a calendar item in outlook 2003. As you can see from the title here, the question mark is working here (firefox).   I have a web server that we use, apache, centos5, php I have a file called 'include.php' that I need to include in multiple sites. Eg. I have a site called testsite.co.za, now in the index.php i want to include the include.php file, the include.php is not in the root of testsite.co.za, Now i created another folder includes in the web root directory which contains include.php my code looks as follows in testsite.co.za/index.php require_once '../includes/include.php'; if i run testsite.co.za it can't detect include.php. Is there a certain server setting I need to change in order to include this file? • How to parse pipe with multiple commands independently?

  How can I parse output of a single command by multiple commands without truncating at each step? For example ls -al|grep -i something will pass every line that has "something" in it to the next pipe which is fine, but that also means every other line in the pipe is discarded since there wont be matching the condition. What I want is to be able to operate on single pipe by many commands independently. In this case it a pipe from Mutt which passes the whole message body. I want to get grep, sed, delete and assign each of these to bash variables maybe. Initially what I want is to be able to assign "message id" to a variable, "subject" to another variable etc Then pass those into proper commands arguments. Here is how it will be MessageBodyFromMutt|grep something -Ax -Bx |grep another thing from the original message| sed some stuff from the original message| cut from here to there Obviously the above line does not do what I want. I want all these commands to operate on the original message body. I hope it makes sense

  hi! I am having multiple logitech devices, and each and one of them seem to have theire own receiver, occupying USB ports.. • Changing Internet connection on ISA Server 2000

  Hi We are getting a new internet connection installed and will need to unplug the old one and connect this to our ISA Server 2000. Will this be a simple swap out job? We will be given a new ip, which i know i will have to enter into the external network card TCP/IP page. I will also be given the default gateway to enter. The ISP engineer said we may have to reset the ARP? cache, if we dont know how we will have to reset the ISA server? Has anyone any experience? The current connection is with the same ISP but it was owned by the business park were we are located and they linked up an ethernet port to what i assume is their own router. Hope you can help, i know that ISA 2000 is somewhat less easy to use than the newer versions.

• Internet addicted, need software to control my usage and block access

  I found I have problem to be a little addictive with surfing on internet. I am trying to find a free ware, (or software), that can help me for exemple to be just 2 hours per day on internet. Like it is counting the minutes and than stop working. not just 2 hours in one time, but in whole day.... maybe that it has different modes (2hours together, in whole day, 2hours + little reserve time) but I need something that really take me away access from internet :) Just counting time, is not enough for me :) Hope we will find something because, I just can't avoid not to loose 4 hours on internet. • ioncube not load after upgrading to php 5.4

• Positive result, negative result and current balance. How do you make starting balance show current result?

  I have 3 columns. Column A shows positive result and if the result is negative then it is in a column B. Column B shows negative result and if the result is positive then it is in a column A. (meaning that either columns can have 0.00 in the cell (empty zero cells)). Column C has starting assets and it also shows the current balance that while result A or B are adding up and current balance is showing the current result. What is the proper formula for this I hope I was clear with my problem. Please help. Thanks in advance!

• Cannot extend existing data disk over 2TB on windows 2008 with dynamic and gpt part

  As my D: disk is almost full (2TB) I extended the FC lun to 2.5TB. The new 500Go are seen by windows as "Unalloacted" as expected. I tried to extend the volume but windows says "The is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation" I read on the web that the disk should be configured as GPT and as a dynamic and it's already a dynamic gpt disk... How can I extend my disk without any data loss? My operating system is Windows 2008 R2 x64 SP1 and the SAN a 3PAR I hope someone can help me :) Thank you very much

• Sound problems in Windows 7

  hi! I hope I reached the correct forum for this question. I have a media computer with a third party audio card (Soundblaster audigy SE) I use a coaxial digital audio cable connected to a Onkyo TX SR508. if I use normal audio, the sound seems very low, I have to set volume atleast to 62 in my amplifier to hear anything, however if I set digital SPDIF I have no means of controlling the audio volume from the PC (only from the amplifier) and this can be nasty if I toggle between movies that uses Digital AC3/THX and movies wihtouth, if I look at movies capable of AC3 the volume gets VERY loud if amp is set to 62, 32 is more than enough volume when using passthrough. so this bothers me is how can I get the same amount of volume with or without digital output? I tried also other soundcards, internal red light Digital audio cable... if I connect to my television I get ok sound on any sound source via HDMI... help :)

  I'm looking for a simple way to share digital images and videos over a network to both Macs and PCs. I'm currently looking into three options: NAS, WD MyBook Mirror drives attached to a router, or an HP WHS product like the Data Vault. I'm looking for something easy to implement that allows for drive mirroring but also has good performance for both Macs and PCS. I've read that the HP WHS devices rebalance on their own schedules, making them useless for streaming video, and hope someone can definitively confirm or deny this as it's a dealbreaker if true. • How do I SCP/FTP to a Coraid SR2421

  I need to save data to a Coraid SR2421. I am no expert and I'm trying to understand how this costy piece of hardware works. All I have is a Ethernet cable connecting my laptop and the coraid to a switch and the coraid's console with cursor blinking. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. edit and further explanation: I've tried using software on the coraid website but It's not working. So I've contacted the support and they sent me a file to upload on the coraid. It looks like if I upgrade coraid's firmware then I'll be able to use the coraid software on the windows side. That's why I'd need SCP/FTP or any kind of solution to copy a file in the partition that can be read from coraid console command line so I can launch the update command as requested. I hope I was a bit clearer now.

• Active Directory remote versus local computer logon

  Hi, Hope some one can help a network/server noob understand how domains work in AD. I am in an organisation with 2 AD servers in 2 different countries, e.g. US and UK, and they set up the US and UK domains respectively. the accounts are set up such that all employees in both countries have a US\user and UK\user account. What is the difference if a UK user logon with US\user from a local UK computer, versus RDP (remote desktop) into a US server with US\user? Thanks for your help.

• Missing disk space in Windows XP

  On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

• Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

  Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.
