• Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

  Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

  I completed a project a year ago. Now a few modification were needed. While trying to test the site, there was an index.html file with a malicious script which had an iframe to another site's jar file. Kaspersky antivirus blocked it. I browsed via ftp to find the file and I deleted it. I also disabled directory listing. Maybe the ftp details of the site owner would have been hacked. I want to report this site to Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, and other antivirus providers. How do I do that? I hope kaspersky would have updated it in their database, but I still want to explicitly report this. Here is the popup kaspersky showed:

• VMware - Watching multiple virtual machine screens

  Hi, I don't know even if I put the question right, but here's what I'd like to accomplish. I have avoided specifying exact Vmware virtualization product here because I'm not sure which one would be most suitable for the task at hand. I am developing an application that works in local network. This application has to run on several computers at the same time, and it's important to me, as a developer and tester, to see (literally) how it behaves at all times on all computers. Is there any way to connect to screens of virtual machines deployed on ESX, ESXi, Sever 2.0, or some other product, so that I can see something like grid of screens, say 4x4 or 6x4 or whatever number of scaled screens, at the same time? Ability to interact with screens directly from grid (by double-clicking a screen, for instance, and then getting full resolution screen) would be greatly appreciated, of course. I hope that someone understood what I meant here. :)

  Hiya. I installed outlook express 2007 and i configured it for my e-mail account. it seems that i cannot remove the personal folders and i cannot configure the gmail Mail file to be as default. (it's translated from hebrew so i hope i got the menu words correct) when i go to tools - manage accounts - data files i see 2 files, one for personal folders and the other for my gmail. the personal folder is the default one and i can't remove it and i can't set my gmail mail file to be the default. how can i resolve the issue? thanks!

• There is a porn domain pointing to my site

  Let's say example.com is my real site, and fooexample.com is the porn site. fooexample.com are pointing to my ip. Now you could think, just don't mind it right. Well the thing is that they are driving load of traffic. Not only that, but my main domain example.com become unavailable after a couple of minutes and the only domain that work is either fooexample.com or none of those 2. What i have done so far was using mod_rewrite to redirect the porn site to google but my domain still become unavailable. Blocking the ips served no result either. I hope someone will be able to help me because this is a huge problem right now. Thanks.

  Question: Can the major TV producer's internet TV systems access network resource? Info: I'm looking for large TV's right now for my company to set up in conference rooms. We want the ability to load presentations with out having to have a computer to do so. Our hope is to put things on to network drives and access and display them from there. I've heard that LG's can do this if you convert the power point file in to a show format. that's fine. I just need to get this information to the TV with out the computer attached. • System will only boot into a Live CD with core disabled in BIOS and ACPI off.

  I have a system that was running a Q6600 and Windows 7 RC. It crashed last night into a BSOD with a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. Now it does that every time it boots into Windows. I tried using my Ubuntu Live CD, but the kernel would error out, the stack trace showed something along the linse of "Can not synchronized to one of the CPUs". Working from this, I enabled the "Limit CPU to 3 cores" option in my BIOS and tried again. This time, it seemed to have died after an ACPI call, so I disabled that during the boot and now it is running from the Ubuntu Live CD, showing 2 cores. Does anyone here think I have any hope or is it simply a CPU waiting to die? EDIT: 1 core now.

I will make a full database backup before I do this, so I don't need to keep anything from the transaction log (right? I have daily full database backup, probably never need point-in-time restore, though I'll keep the option open if I can - that's all the .ldf is really for, correct?). (Hope this isn't an exact duplicate, I read a lot of questions but couldn't find this exact scenario elsewhere).

  I just started using VPNBOOK, which is a (very efficent) free VPN solution. I have a question: VPNBOOK user and pass used to connect to their vpn network are publicily available on their homepage; everybody uses them to connect to the vpn. Can a user intercept my wifi traffic and: Understand that my connections are directed to VPNBOOK servers. If point 1 is successful, then they could use VPNBOOK public user and pass to decrypt my traffic? I hope I am missing something, otherwise it would be a very big weakness and I would revert to a paid service (with a private account)

• Strange sound from Laptop, Microphone, Speakers or Soundcard?

  I have recently purchased a second hand computer. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it on purchasing, however recently I have noticed a small issue. Any time I play sound or listen through my headphones, I can hear what seems to be the CPU working (ie when beginning a new task, there is a small crackling). Also if I tap my laptop I can hear the sound louder, as if it is being picked up by the mic and then playing that sound in real time through the speakers or headphones. I have tried reading other topics but cannot find an answer to this question. These are the specs I am running on; Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10Ghz 2.10Ghz I hope someone can help me with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

• How do you manage updates without a staging environment: CentOS 6.3

  I am managing about 20 servers, many of them virtual. They are almost all different purpose, and none are clustered. I have a distributed LAMP stack, a few application servers, some build servers, a few KVM hosts. They are CentOS 6.3 mostly with a few Ubuntu (unfortunately). I don't have the resources to setup a staging environment where I can have duplicates of my machines and test updates before rolling them out. I am taking file backups. What I want to know is how you are approaching backing up your Linux systems. I assume you don't just do yum update, but then how are you choosing the packages worthy of updating? When (if ever) are you updating the kernel, etc.. How do you test updates without a staging environment? Snapshot and hope for the best?

  I'm buying an Asus eee-pc 1015PEM and hope to do test-driven Rails 3 development on it. Is the CPU fast enough or too painfully slow for this? I plan on installing Ubuntu. I currently develop on a 11 inch Macbook Air 2010 model. It works fine as a Rails development machine. But for some reason I'm drawn to developing on a cheap little netbook. I don't use any IDE's, and my development workflow is mostly switching between Vim, Gnu Screen, and bash.

Usually this setup is great for me, but sometimes I'd like to run Linux natively, and not inside VirtualBox. Is there a way to boot directly into the vdi file without the Windows overhead? E.g. using a USB stick with some modified Linux Kernel / GRUB that can mount the vdi file directly as "/"? Or copy the contents of my vdi file to the empty partition and somehow use this from VirtualBox (when booting into Windows) AND directly booting into Linux? Hope to get some hints or even howtos.

• Map a drive to root of a server (\\sever) in Vista

  Hi, In Win XP, I can very easily map a network drive to the root of my NAS server. I browse to it in Explorer (\192.168.1.70), choose "Map Network Drive", choose the drive letter, done. In Vista, this does not seem possible. I have to go "Map Network Drive" from 'Computer', then enter the address, but it will only let me map to specific shares (sub-folders off of the server root) and NOT to the server root share. Since my NAS has built-in shares (music, photo, video, etc.) then I would have to have drive letters for all of these, which I absolutely don't want. Can anyone tell me - how come I can easily map to the server root from XP, but not in Vista? Is there something fundamentally different in the networking across the two OS's? Or do I just need to do things a different way? Hope someone can help. Thanks, AT

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04, I'm trying to mount a samba share from Windows under Linux, using a scripted command that's always worked, and the server hasn't changed. The error is as follows: $ mount -t cifs //<host>/<share> /media/<share> -o username=<user>,password=<pass> mount: block device //<host>/<share> is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: cannot mount block device //<host>/<share> read-only $ I've read a lot of discussions about permissions, but unfortunately, that wasn't the issue. I'm submitting my own answer below for reference, hope this helps someone else.

  I didn't realise how world wide the users of the site are. I am based in England and will be helping out at an International Camp for young people in Finland this summer. I will be in charge off an game where we will have 1500 young people searcing for these CD's that will be hidden all over the camp site. They will have to find them and bringing them back to base one at a time. The young people will be divided into 5 teams and the team that brings back the most gets a prize.   I suppose that hosters who provides unlimited mail quota are only claiming it unlimited, and hope that they won't run out of disk space. Correct me if I'm wrong. In order to do such trick they will have probably to calculate the average real quota used by the average user. Let's say on a 100 GB space hosting I offer to 20 x 1GB emails, obviously if all user fill their mail my server would stop working cause they would require 200 GB, but I think I can expect this trick to work cause it will never happen (or it's extermly unprobable) that all user fills up all their mails. But the QUESTTIONS are: What's the average email usage? Can we say that a user normally fills up 1/2 or 1/3 of the quota you provide him? Thanks to any answers/suggetions you might provide.

• How to make a server check it's own availability on the web?

  Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

  I installed NTFS 3G but now get the following error message when I try to plug in my external drive. I also get it on startup about my Windows partition. Uninstall/ reinstall does not work. NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1at /volumes/freeagent GoFlex Drive because the following error occured: /library/filesystems/fuse.fs/support/fusefs.kext failed to load- (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/ kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8). The MacFUSE file system is not available (71) Any help would be great. I'd hope to avoid reinstalling OS X if possible!

I am working on an application and one of the function is to automatically send an email with an attachment. I can code the application to attach the object when it resides on local or on a mapped drive. Newbie Question: Is there a way to have the object reside on the Domino server, and still be able to point to it and have the application automatically attach and send? Is there any method that allows me to do this? Users have no direct access to the server/filesystem, so mapped drive of the Domino server is out of the question.   Thanks in advance. Well i have a laptop of IBM thinkpad x32. Windowx xp installed. So, the problem is that: The basic problem is the Black Screen but it's not means that laptop doesn't power-up or boot-up, sometimes after booting, screen will off and notable thing is that after black screen computer is still running all keyboard lights are on, and when i tried to again start it, it will boot ok but after some time screen will gone, and sometimes this happens during booting screen, even sometimes screen black out at win XP user login page, means after some seconds or min screen will gone.
