• Ubuntu 12.10 wont boot

  im new to using Ubuntu and just bought a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa with windows 8 pre installed. I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu on it and installed alsongside windows, for 2 days it worked fine, I got into Ubuntu by doing an advanced restart from windows 8 and then booting Ubuntu from the partition it made. When i did the advanced restart today there was only 1 HDD i could select ( there were 3 before windows, a restore partition that was already there when i got the computer and Ubuntu) so i booted from the USB again and re-installed Ubuntu. then did an advanced restart and the 3 partitions where there again, i booted from Ubuntu and now heres my problem. I get the Ubuntu background when its loading then its just a black screen with some writing, its not on long enough to read, then just a black screen with a white _ and the top left corner that does nothing, i have to restat the computer and it auto boots into windows 8. im a little confused as the first time i installed Ubuntu it worked fine until the partition dissaperd), the second time i installed i did everything the same except it found the old Ubuntu so i reinstalled it and now is donst work.

  In November 2012, Oracle’s partner deal registration process will move to the Oracle Partner Store (OPS). During this time, OPS will become the single source for partners to register deals, obtain deal status, and place orders. What will partners need to do? 1. Request an OPS Account – If your company is new to OPS the first thing you need to do is request an account (if your company already has an OPS account, go to step 2). It’s important to have the person who will be managing your OPS account make this request as soon as possible. They will be set up as your company’s primary administrator. 2. Set-Up Users in OPS – Setup of users can start immediately, and will be handled by the primary OPS administrator at your company. The process is simple, but all existing users of Global PRM (Partner Relationship Management) deal registration will need to be set up in OPS before November 14, 2012.  3. Review/Action Any Registrations Pending Submission in PRM – Prior to November 14, 2012, all pending registrations should be submitted in the existing PRM system. It is important that this step is complete so registrations will not need to be re-entered when the system is moved to OPS on November 17, 2012. Registrations pending submission are easily identified on the registration listing screen with either “Incomplete” or “Returned to Partner” in the status column.  4. • Uninstall ax88179 package

  I've installed the ax88179 package from the PPA (since the ax88179 driver isn't in the 3.8 kernel). But now I'd like to install kernel 3.11.6 and this module is already included here. So I'd like to uninstall the the module from the package but this fails with the following error message The following packages will be REMOVED: ax88179* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. • How to verify the code that could take a substantial time to compile? [on hold]

  As a follow up to my prev question: What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment To recap: I am stuck with a large software system with which a TDD ideology of "test often" does not work. And to make it even worse the features like pre-compiled headers/multi-threaded compilation/incremental linking, etc is not available to me - hence I think that the best way out would be to add the extensive logging into the system and to start "coding in large chunks", which I understand as code for a two-three hours first (as opposed to 15-20 mins in TDD) - thoroughly eyeball the code for a 15 minutes and only after all that do the compilation and run the tests. As I have been doing TDD for a quite a while, my code eyeballing / code verification skills got rusty (you don't really need this that much if you can quickly verify what you've done in 5 seconds by running a test or two) - so I am after a recommendations on how to learn these source code verification/error spotting skills again. I know I was able to do that easily some 5-10 years ago when I din't have much support from the compiler/unit testing tools I had until recently, thus there should be a way to get back to the basics.

  Internationalization (i18n) is a way of designing and developing a software product to function in multiple locales. This process involves identifying the locales that must be supported, designing features which support those locales, and writing code that functions equally well in any of the supported locales. Localization (L10n) is a process of modifying or adapting a software product to fit the requirements of a particular locale. This process includes (but may not be limited to) translating the user interface, documentation and packaging, changing dialog box geometries, customizing features (if necessary), and testing the translated product to ensure that it still works (at least as well as the original). i18n is a pre-requisite for L10n. Resource is 1. any part of a program which can appear to the user or be changed or configured by the user. 2. any piece of the program's data, as opposed to its code. Core product is the language independent portion of a software product (as distinct from any particular localized version of that product - including the English language version). • What is the recommended MongoDB schema for this quiz-engine scenario?

  I'm working on a quiz engine for learning a foreign language. The engine shows users four images simultaneously and then plays an audio file. The user has to match the audio to the correct image. Below is my MongoDB document structure. Each document consists of an image file reference and an array of references to audio files that match that image. To generate a quiz instance I select four documents at random, show the images and then play one audio file from the four documents at random. The next step in my application development is to decide on the best document schema for storing user guesses. There are several requirements to consider: I need to be able to report statistics at a user level. For example, total correct answers, total guesses, mean accuracy, etc) I need to be able to query images based on the user's learning progress. For example, select 4 documents where guess count is 10 and accuracy is <=0.50. The schema needs to be optimized for fast quiz generation. The schema must not cause future scaling issues vis a vis document size. Assume 1mm users who make an average of 1000 guesses. Given all of this as background information, what would be the recommended schema? For example, would you store each guess in the Image document or perhaps in a User document (not shown) or a new document collection created for logging guesses? Would you recommend logging the raw guess data or would you pre-compute statistics by incrementing counters within the relevant document? • Laptop, unable to install discrete graphics card GTX 880M

  So I've bought the GT70 2PE Dominator Pro a few weeks ago and I installed Zorin OS 9 Ultimate on it. Today I tried to install the Nvidia drivers on my laptop since it has the GTX 880M, but my system became unbootable. Can anyone help me with this issue? I will write down what I've tried so far. This is what I've tried so far: Downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers from their website. Pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to open the terminal page thingy. Logged in and got root access. Stopped the lightdm service. Ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.32.run installer. Pressed the accept button and right after that it told me the following message: The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue installation anyway?. When I install anyway, it will crash my system and makes it unbootable, Does anyone know how to use my GTX 880M? Do I need to enable it on boot time somehow? Thanks for the support, Sapphire ~

• Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on install using VMware Player on Windows 7

  At my job, we're migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.10 (we skipped a generation), so everyone needs to make one or more new Virtual Machines for 12.04 on their Windows 7 workstation. The problem is, only some have had success while most encounter a hang during install. I was tasked with researching this problem and here are my findings (while somewhat inconclusive) I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Player, using versions 4.0.2, 4.0.4, and 5.0.0 but every install hangs at "retrieving file 55 of 129." Additionally I have installed before updating the VMware tools, as well as after (one can pre-download them) with every install hanging at "retrieving file 55 of 129." The file i was using for the above two is called: ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso I have burned a disc with ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and tried to install it, and later tried ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso (which is not what i want but i wanted to see if it would work), but both times I get "PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found" This is all in VMware and the goal is to find a settings recipe that will allow an unbroken 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 install from an .iso hosted on the Windows OS. • Why is MediaWiki auto-linking the word “files”

  Our MediaWiki installation is auto-linking the word "files". So Here are some files: a, b, c would result in the word "files" being linked to http://ourhost/mediawiki/files. Why is that happening and how do I make it stop? I can use the nowiki tag, but perhaps it does not surprise you that the word "files" appears often, and it is aggravating to use that tag all the time.   Purpose The integration of WebADI technology with the Install Base Mass Update function is designed to make creation and update of bulk item instances much easier than in the past. What is it? WebADI is an Excel-based desktop application where users can download an Excel template with item instances pre-populated based on search criteria.  Users can create and update item instances in the Excel sheet and finally upload the Excel data using an "upload" option available in the Excel menu. • Fastest approach to 3D animation

  I'm currently tasked with designing a small HTML5 game. Having done everything by myself so far (3D models, codebase, game design, etc) I'm now at a point where I'm running out of time. I've less than a day to animate and bind everything together. However, that's exactly my problem. I was under the naive impression that everything would be easier if I went with pre-rendered 3D models. However, I didn't consider the most difficult part. Animation. After having spent over an hour trying to figure out messiahStudio, I figured it's time to ask for outside help. Is there any easier solution to 3D animation than 3D rigging? What I'm basically looking for is some sort of tool that allows me to simply grab and move/deform select polygons. It doesn't have to be as life-like and accurate as rigging, just efficient enough. Were the circumstances any different, I might just learn how to rig. But that's sorely out of scope right now. PS:The models were created in Sculptris but are fairly low-poly.

• Can someone explain the (reasons for the) implications of colum vs row major in multiplication/concatenation?

  I am trying to learn how to construct view and projection matrices, and keep reaching difficulties in my implementation owing to my confusion about the two standards for matrices. I know how to multiply a matrix, and I can see that transposing before multiplication would completely change the result, hence the need to multiply in a different order. What I don't understand though is whats meant by only 'notational convention' - from the articles here and here the authors appear to assert that it makes no difference to how the matrix is stored, or transferred to the GPU, but on the second page that matrix is clearly not equivalent to how it would be laid out in memory for row-major; and if I look at a populated matrix in my program I see the translation components occupying the 4th, 8th and 12th elements. Given that: "post-multiplying with column-major matrices produces the same result as pre-multiplying with row-major matrices. " Why in the following snippet of code: Matrix4 r = t3 * t2 * t1; Matrix4 r2 = t1.Transpose() * t2.Transpose() * t3.Transpose(); Does r != r2 and why does pos3 != pos for: Vector4 pos = wvpM * new Vector4(0f, 15f, 15f, 1); Vector4 pos3 = wvpM.Transpose() * new Vector4(0f, 15f, 15f, 1); Does the multiplication process change depending on whether the matrices are row or column major, or is it just the order (for an equivalent effect?) One thing that isn't helping this become any clearer, is that when provided to DirectX, my column major WVP matrix is used successfully to transform vertices with the HLSL call: mul(vector,matrix) which should result in the vector being treated as row-major, so how can the column major matrix provided by my math library work?

• Which powerful laptop, with UK keyboard and 8gb ram

  I've been searching high and low for high spec laptops compatible with Ubuntu. The lack of coherent information on the topic is high (considering the number of people who apparently want a good laptop with an OS operating system). So I thought you may have some advice. My requirements: a) has = 8Gb ram b) is compatible with Ubuntu c) has a UK keyboard and charger d) does not cost the Earth Which would you go for? Does anyone have good experience with high-end laptops running Ubuntu? So here's some background research: Samsung Series 7 looks great, but has various problems on Ubuntu, including: poor battery life, touchpad does not work, graphics card not fully supported and sucks power when it does (see [here] and [here], for example). Other options on the [wish list] include: the sensible [Acer] (possibly n.1 choice, but not sure about graphics card compatibility or battery), a nice looking [HP Pavilion dv6-6c56ea], which also has incompatibility issues (see [here] and [here] and check ubuntuforums) And another [Acer] which may be best due to its simplicity and cheapness. Other sub-questions: didn't Dell offer Ubuntu support for decent laptops (above 6Gb ram their offerings are scarce); what about pre-installed options such as those provided by System76? If it weren't for the UK keyboard and charger, I'd probably go for this [amazing-looking] [machine]. Many thanks for any advice, P.s. • How to avoid the GameManager god object?

  I just read an answer to a question about structuring game code. It made me wonder about the ubiquitous GameManager class, and how it often becomes an issue in a production environment. Let me describe this. First, there's prototyping. Nobody cares about writing great code, we just try to get something running to see if the gameplay adds up. Then there's a greenlight, and in an effort to clean things up, somebody writes a GameManager. Probably to hold a bunch of GameStates, maybe to store a few GameObjects, nothing big, really. A cute, little, manager. In the peaceful realm of pre-production, the game is shaping up nicely. Coders have proper nights of sleep and plenty of ideas to architecture the thing with Great Design Patterns. Then production starts and soon, of course, there is crunch time. Balanced diet is long gone, the bug tracker is cracking with issues, people are stressed and the game has to be released yesterday. At that point, usually, the GameManager is a real big mess (to stay polite). The reason for that is simple. After all, when writing a game, well... all the source code is actually here to manage the game. It's easy to just add this little extra feature or bugfix in the GameManager, where everything else is already stored anyway. When time becomes an issue, no way to write a separate class, or to split this giant manager into sub-managers. Of course this is a classical anti-pattern: the god object. It's a bad thing, a pain to merge, a pain to maintain, a pain to understand, a pain to transform. What would you suggest to prevent this from happening?

• Where to find information about ubuntu compatible or certified hardware/PC models

  I am buying a new desktop PC in early 2013, anyway this question should apply to someone intending to buy a new laptop/ultrabook as well. This machine is not meant for gaming, and if I ocasionally do it, I can survive with minimum graphics. However I may need some heavy multimedia edition or multitasking at times, so basically my greatest priority is a good processor, after that perhaps average graphic card (if onboards are not enough, I am still not informed enough about that), at least 4GB of RAM with possibility of expansion. I know there are some PC models specially designed to ship with Ubuntu, which is the OS I use the most these days. However, most people around me use Windows and some software with unsupported versions for Linux and not having a Windows license becomes a bit problematic. Given that, I would like to find information about which PC models or even manufacters currently on the market have the best compatibility with Ubuntu, I am still undecided between building my own desktop or buying a pre-made model, so I would like to find information both for certified models and certified hardware or even Ubuntu partners that may work closely with Canonical. • Storing images in file system and returning URLs or virtually resizing and returning byte arrays?

  I need to create a REST web service to manage user submitted images and displaying them all in a website. There are multiple websites that are going to use this service to manage and display images. The requirements are to have 5 pre-defined image sizes available. The 2 options I see are the following: The web service will create the 5 images, store them in the file system and and store the URL's in the database when the user submits the image. When the image is requested, the web service will return an array of URLs. I see this option to be a little hard on the hard drive. The estimates are 10,000 users per site, and lets say, 100 sites. The heavy processing will be done when the user submits the image and each image is going to be pulled from the File System. The web service will store just the image that the user submits in the file system and it's URL in the database. When the user request images, the web service will get the info from the DB, load the image on memory, create its 5 instances and return an object with 5 image arrays (I will probably cache the arrays). This option is harder on the processor and memory. The heavy processing will be done when the images get requested. A plus I see for option 2 is that it will give me the option to rewrite the URL of the image and make them site dependent (prettier) than having a image repository for all websites. But this is not a big deal. What do you think of these options? Do you have any other suggestions?

• Step by Step: Remove/Sideline Preinstalled Windows 8, Install Ubuntu

  I want Ubuntu as my primary/only operating system. Computer came with presumptive Pre-Installed Windows 8.(touch screen) Help. New Dell Inspiron 15r. Cannot install Ubuntu 12.04-03 or LTS. I need/request step by step instructions to remove Windows 8 or sideline Windows 8. (ie) BIOS settings I need to know: What to have; What settings; When to apply; Boot manager settings. UEFI. Etc. This should be easy, but I am mired in the Herpes that is Microsoft. I end up having a presumed dual boot that will not access Ubuntu. (ie) Step 1: Turn on computer. Step 2: F# to change ... to ... at Dell prompt... I want to use Ubuntu as my primary operating system or my only operating system.

• Ubuntu 12.04 gets overheated, whereas I have no heating problems on Windows 7 whatsoever

  I bought a new laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 7. I love working on Ubuntu and hence installed it. I can work on Windows for 6 hours at a stretch and feel the laptop being only slightly warm, but 15 minutes into running Ubuntu and my laptop is too hot. The battery also drains out very quickly on Ubuntu. 1.5 hrs of backup on Ubuntu compared to 5-6 hrs on Windows. I previously owned a Dell Inspiron N5010 and everything ran smoothly on that. No heating issues. It came with intel i3 processor. So I'm wondering whether this problem has something to do with the processor? (AMD A8) Specs: HP Pavilion G6-2005AX Laptop (APU Quad Core A8/ 4GB/ 500GB/ Win7 HB/ 1.5GB Graph) 1 GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Dedicated 512 MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics Integrated Is there any fix for this problem? Thanks in advance. Edit: I've installed ATI proprietary drivers suggested by Ubuntu.

• Is there an open source version check library and web app?

  I'm a developer for a cross platform (Win, MacOS, Linux) open source C++ application. I would like to have the program occasionally check for the latest version from our web site. Between the security, privacy, and cross platform network issues, I'd rather not roll our own solution. It seems like this is a common enough thing that there 'ought' to be a library/app which will do this. Unfortunately, the searches I've tried come up empty. Ideally, the web app would track requests and process the logs into some nice reports (number of users, what version, what platform, frequency of use, maybe even geographical info from IP address, etc.). While appropriately respecting privacy, etc. What pre-existing tools can help solve this problem? Edits: I am looking for a reporting tool, not a dependency checker. Our project has the challenge of keeping up with our users. Most do not join the mailing list. Our project has not been picked up by major distributions -- most of our users are Windows/MacOS anyway. When a new version comes out, we have no way of informing our users of its existence. Development is moving pretty fast, major features added every few months. We would like to provide the user with a way to check for an updated version. While we're at it, we would like to use these requests for some simple & anonymous usage tracking (X users running version Y with Z frequency, etc.). We do not need/want something that auto-updates or tracks dependencies on the system. We are not currently worried about update size -- when the user chooses to update, we expect them to download the complete latest version. We would like to keep this as simple as possible.

• How many tasks to plan beforehand [closed]

  As for my daily routine. Every morning when I come to work, I look at the items of my todo-list inbox (noted from the previous day). For each task I think about on which day I should get started and then group them accordingly. Once that's finished, I get started with my actual schedule for the day. Now, this pre-planning for each task (which could be concerning user interface to compiler programming) is mostly pretty sketchy. Serious thoughts about design and implementation comes when the task is about to be tackled. This approach works for me and I can't really complain. But I'm wondering. Since I'm personally most productive during the morning, would it make sense to already go into a deeper level of planning right away for each task? Or is that unproductive and would rather confuse than clarify? I think the latter. How do you handle your task management for each task / project and how far do you go with planning before even getting started with that item?

• MySQL can only log in as root, even after creating new users with their own database

  Problem: I just set up a Debian Wheezy installation for testing, and installed the LAMP packages and PMA. I can log in as root with my pre-defined password, create/edit/delete both databases and users. The problem comes when I create a new user 'something', set a password for it, and grant it all privileges on a table 'something' (same as the username). Upon connecting, it denies access to the user. Details: Host: localhost using MySQL 5.5.24-8 Creating user: CREATE USER 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '***';GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '***' WITH MAX_QUERIES_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_CONNECTIONS_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_UPDATES_PER_HOUR 0 MAX_USER_CONNECTIONS 0;CREATE DATABASE IF NOT EXISTSsomething;GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ONsomething.* TO 'something'@'%'; Checking privileges: GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'something'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD '*92F9DAF5F5129554509489FDB6A433510223C799'; Result: Access denied for user 'something'@'localhost' (using password: YES) More Info: I use this same exact procedure for the Squeeze distribution, and it works perfectly. Is there a chance it's because of Wheezy, or something else? I need to continue using Wheezy because of the updated packages (for this test server -- the others work fine), so 'just use Squeeze' is not an option. Note: I HAVE tried flush privileges; to no avail.
