• asp.net form validation. Server-side or client-side

  Here's (i think) an interesting question. With AJAX more and more common i feel more and more like doing all form validation server-side. Picture a registration form pre-AJAX. You have all your validation client-side using the common asp validation controls and validation summery...except...checking username availability, check emailadress availability, captcha and what not. So you end up with 2 kinds of validation and so presenting the user with 2 different UI's at 2 different moments. 2 words come to my mind. Ugly. Inconsistent. So here's the question. Why not do all the validation server-side (using AJAX or not). (I'm not using JQuery yet, should i?)

• Manually inserting varbinary data into SQL Server

  Hi, We have a SQL Server table for user settings. Originally the settings were domain objects which had been serialized as XML into the table but we recently begun serializing them as binary. However, as part of our deployment process we statically pre-populate the table with predefined settings for our users. Originally, this was as simple as copying the XML from a customized database and pasting it into an INSERT statement that was ran after the database was built. However, since we've moved to storing the settings as binary data we can't get this to work. How can we extract binary data from a varbinary column in SQL Server and paste it into a static INSERT script? We only want to use SQL for this, we don't want to use any utilities. I want to have a layout with a bunch of Icon or buttons that can be selected either by touch, radio, or checked box.   Developing a community site where everyone can post text, I'm looking for a markup filter: What is not part of the markup must be escaped (htmlspecialchars()) as it is. Should turn URL-s automatically into links Should support some form of basic markups (bold, image, url, pre, list) Should have a simple parser, that turns user input text into HTML Content on the site is public to everyone, XSS must not allowed to happen. What do you suggest? What markup language in the first place? BBCode? Wiki? Markdown? Are there any complete API-s with good examples? PHP is available on the server side. If there is a WYSIWYG-like texarea in addition (like here on SO) that would be a fantastic bonus!

• Using PHP with the default Mac Apache + PHP installation

  Hi, I'm starting to unravel the mysteries of PHP and I configured the pre-installed Snow Leopard PHP and activated the Apache server in the system preferences. So far so good: it works if you put a PHP file in your ~/Sites directory. Since I've my projects in a code/projects directory I created a symbolic link from the ~/Sites dir to the code/projects/one-project/php-dir and bang!, a 403 error: access forbidden. I've been changing the permissions of the dirs to 777, but no luck. Is anyone using the default Snow Leoapard configuration for PHP development and if so, how do you link to your codebase?   A lot of the answers to the questions about the accuracy of float and double recommend the use of decimal for monetary amounts. This works because today all currencies are decimal except MGA and MRO, and those have subunits of 1/5 so are still decimal-friendly. But what about the software used in U.S. stock markets when prices were in 1/16ths of dollar? The accuracy of binary data types wouldn't have been an issue, right? Going further back, how did pre-1971 British accounting software deal with pounds, shillings, and pence? Did their versions of COBOL have a special PIC clause for it? Were all amounts stored in pence? How was decimalisation handled?

• Using code in both Actionscript3 and Javascript

  Here's an interesting architectural query. I have a piece of code that needs to run on the server (under Node.js) and on the client (in a Flash 10 app written with Actionscript 3). The code is mostly fairly intricate object manipulation, it doesn't make any API calls, and works fine in both contexts. So far the project is just a demo, so I've been happy to copy and paste the code into both places. But it might be quite interesting to move forward with this. So how would you do it? I assume there is no easy way to get the Flash SDK (has to build without an IDE) to read and do something useful with a .js file. My only thought is that I could write a code-generator that takes the .js file and places it in an ActionScript wrapper. Are there any obvious approaches that I've missed? Just to pre-empt an obvious answer, I know about cross-platform languages like HaXe.

• Where do you include FirePHP in Wordpress?

  I'm using require_once() in header.php to include the FirePHP library. In the page.php I'm doing the usual... $firephp = FirePHP::getInstance(true); $firephp->log($categories); Getting these errors.. 'Headers already sent....' and Cannot send log data to FirePHP. You must have Output Buffering enabled via ob_start() or output_buffering ini directive... I figured the using require_once in the template's header.php (above all HTML output) would be safe (pre header output). Guess this is not the case. Anyone have experience with this? (P.S. I tried the WP FirePHP plugin, wasn't working right)

• Referencing Environment Variables in web.xml

  I'm pre-packaging a JSP web-app that relies on some file path settings found within web.xml. These settings are unknown at packaging time, because they reference a path the customer will set when deploying the entire application (of which the web-app is a management interface). It seems that the easiest way to avoid tokens and file modifications in my installer script, is to ask the user for an install location, set this location as an environment variable (e.g JAVA_HOME), and have web.xml always reference that variable. Is there a way to reference an environment variable value from within web.xml? Google searches lead to the J2EE method of SETTING environment variables from ejb xml files.   If you're familiar with the excellent Aptana Studio IDE, you know it's based on Eclipse. You also know it comes pre-packaged with SFTP capability. I need to work on a remote server, where I have Apache installed; SFTP is ideal for this. I've installed the Subclipse plugin, and I can access and checkout projects from the Repo. I can create a new project from SVN source, which will download all the source to my chosen workspace or a specified location. But I can't figure out a way to combine these features! I need to create a Project on a remote server via SFTP but I need to link the source to a repository. Is there any way to do this?

  I'm curious. Apple says in the docs: Core Data automatically fires faults when necessary (when a persistent property of a fault is accessed). However, firing faults individually can be inefficient, and there are better strategies for getting data from the persistent store (see “Batch Faulting and Pre-fetching with the SQLite Store”). NSFetchRequest has this feature: [fetchRequest setFetchBatchSize:20]; Is this essentially performing such a batch faulting like recommended? Just to make this clear for others, faulting does not mean "turning into a fault" but it means "materializing it", just like "making a Scooby-Doo out of it". Pretty ugly wording error, in my opinion, but it's at least consistent in the docs ;)

• Precompile Lambda Expression Tree conversions as constants?

  It is fairly common to take an Expression tree, and convert it to some other form, such as a string representation (for example this question and this question, and I suspect Linq2Sql does something similar). In many cases, perhaps even most cases, the Expression tree conversion will always be the same, i.e. if I have a function public string GenerateSomeSql(Expression<Func<TResult, TProperty>> expression) then any call with the same argument will always return the same result for example: GenerateSomeSql(x => x.Age) //suppose this will always return "select Age from Person" GenerateSomeSql(x => x.Ssn) //suppose this will always return "select Ssn from Person" So, in essence, the function call with a particular argument is really just a constant, except time is wasted at runtime re-computing it continuously. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the conversion was sufficiently complex to cause a noticeable performance hit, is there any way to pre-compile the function call into an actual constant?

  Hi Folks, I downloaded one of the rails app from server and tried running it.I faced an error on migration D:\Radiant\trunkrake db:migrate (in D:/Radiant/trunk) rake aborted! 126: The specified module could not be found. - D:/Radiant/trunk/config/../ven dor/plugins/libxml-ruby/lib/libxml_ruby.so I got the windows version of libxml_ruby.so and tried again. i got the error saying " libxml2.dll " not found.Then i checked the file libxml.rb ..it says the below lines . If running on Windows, then add the current directory to the PATH for the current process so it can find the pre-built libxml2 and iconv2 shared libraries (dlls). • Visual Studio ReportViewer repeating data block on every page

  I am using Reportviewer to generate a sales invoice to be printed by the user. How can I get databound fields to be printed on every page of a multi page invoice? The invoice is printed on a pre-printed form. I want the printed form to look roughly like: page 1 customer john smith 123 main st. city, CA 90000 some item1 $100 some item2 $150 some item3 $150 page 2 customer john smith 123 main st. city, CA 90000 some item4 $500 some item5 $250 some item6 $950 Total $2100 Using 1 list which contains databound textbox fields for the customer info, and a table for the items. The problem is if there are many items such that the items flow over to page 2, the next page only contains items, and not the customer info which needs to be printed on second page as well. I tried using page header, but I can't use databound items in page header. Please Help!

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture).   Suppose we have a DAG with edges labeled with numbers. Define the value of a path as the product of the labels. For each (source,sink)-pair I want to find the sum of the values of all the paths from source to sink. You can do this in polynomial time with dynamic programming, but there are still some choices that can be made in how you decompose the problem. In my case I have one DAG that has to be evaluated repeatedly with different labelings. My question is: for a given DAG, how can we pre-compute a good strategy for computing these values for different labelings repeatedly. It would be nice if there was an algorithm that finds an optimal way, for example a way that minimizes the number of multiplications. But perhaps this is too much to ask, I would be very happy with an algorithm that just gives a good decomposition.

  I've done this using a regular .cs file that just extends System.Web.UI.UserControl and then included the assembly of the project that contains the control into other projects. I've also created .ascx files in one project then copied all ascx files from a specified folder in the properties-Build Events-Pre-build event. Now what I want to do is a combination of those two: I want to be able to use ascx files that I build in one project, in all of my other projects but I want to include them just using assembly references rather than having to copy them to my "secondary" projects as that seems a ghetto way to accomplish what I want to do. It works yes, but it's not very elegant. Can anyone let me know if this even possible, and if so, what the best way to approach this is?

  Hi all, Recently we had an encoding problem in our system : If we had the string "æ" in our db ,it became "æ" on our web pages. Now this problem is solved, but the problem is that now we have a lot of "æ" in our database : users didn't see and validate pre-filled form with these characters. I found that If you read in utf 8 C3A6 you'll get "æ", if you read it in ascii you'll get "æ". It's strange because if I execute "select convert(varbinary(40),N'æ'),convert(varbinary(40),'æ')" I don't have the same result... Do you have any idea on how I can fix my database (ie change all "æ" to "æ") ? thx

  How do sprites work? I've seen sprites from old school games like Super Mario Brothers, and wondered how they're animated to make a game. They're always presented as one big image map, so how are they used? For Mario (as an example) are there precalculated image co-ordinates that outline mario, and are swapped between various mario sprites to produce animation? Or are sprites pre "cut" during game initialization using precalculated images co-ordinates and stored in memory somewhere? Obviously I know nothing about game development.

  I've found the symbol :=: in some Clarion code and I can't seem to figure out exactly what it does. The code was written by a previous developer many years ago, so I can't ask him. I also have not been able to find any results for "colon equals colon" in Google. Here is an example of the code, where bufSlcdpaDtl is a file object: lCCRecord Like(bufSlcdpaDtl),Pre(lCCRecord) ! ...other stuff... lCCRecord :=: bufSlcdpaDtl I'm wondering if it's something similar to ::= in Python or possibly the assignment operator :=.
