• Any danger in using the Wine workaround in 12.04?

  To run certain Windows programs in WINE you need to this workaround: echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope According to the support websites, this is due to a bug in the Ubuntu kernel that prevents ptrace and WINE playing well together. Using the above command you set the ptrace to 0 which according the research I've done(don't ask me which websites, I have seem a lot of them), ptrace has to do with the interactions between programs. The 0 setting is more permissive than the 1. I have to assume that there was a good reason Ubuntu wanted the ptrace=1 so this leads me back to the short form of the question. Are there any risks involved in setting ptrace=0. Lower security? problems debugging? any others that I haven't thought of??? P.S. for anybody reading this that wonders what the bug causes, the Windows programs will fail to open at all, in the System Monitor you will see many instances of the program trying to open and then they will eventually all quit and if you run the progam for the terminal you will get an error that tells you that the maximum number of program instances has been reached.

• What to do when 'dpkg --configure -a' fails with too many errors?

  During an upgrade from lucid (10.04) to precise (12.04), the X session froze, and I have been trying to recover the upgrade to get a stable system. I have performed the following steps: Used ssh to log in to the stalled system over the network. Checked the contents of the /var/log/dist-upgrade directory. There was no activity on main.log, apt.log or term.log. top showed that process 'precise' was using about 3% CPU, but I could find no evidence that the upgrade process was still doing anything. 'dpkg' did not show up in top, but it came up with pgrep dpkg | xargs ps Killed the 'dpkg' and 'precise' processes Tried to recover the upgrade by running sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a. This was partially successful (some packages were configured), but failed with the message Processing was halted because there were too many errors. I ran the same command a few times, and each time some packages were configured but others failed. Tried running sudo apt-get -f install. It fails with similar errors to dpkg. The current situation is that dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get -f install fails with two kinds of error: Dependency issues, e.g.: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cifs-utils: cifs-utils depends on samba-common; however: Package samba-common is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing cifs-utils (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Resource conflict, e.g.: debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable Additionally, it seems there's reference to potential boot problems, so I'm not keen to reboot without fixing the install first: dpkg: too many errors, stopping Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-25-generic cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda1 cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab So my question is, how to get a working install when dpkg --configure -a fails?

• Are short abbreviated method/function names that don't use full words bad practice or a matter of style?

  Is there nowadays any case for brevity over clarity with method names? Tonight I came across the Python method repr() which seems like a bad name for a method to me. It's not an English word. It apparently is an abbreviation of 'representation' and even if you can deduce that, it still doesn't tell you what the method does. A good method name is subjective to a certain degree, but I had assumed that modern best practices agreed that names should be at least full words and descriptive enough to reveal enough about the method that you would easily find one when looking for it. Method names made from words help let your code read like English. repr() seems to have no advantages as a name other than being short and IDE auto-complete makes this a non-issue. An additional reason given in an answer is that python names are brief so that you can do many things on one line. Surely the better way is to just extract the many things to their own function, and repeat until lines are not too long. Are these just a hangover from the unix way of doing things? Commands with names like ls, rm, ps and du (if you could call those names) were hard to find and hard to remember. I know that the everyday usage of commands such as these is different than methods in code so the matter of whether those are bad names is a different matter.

• Silverlight Developer needs ASP.NET MVC Training [on hold]

  With Silverlight on the way out, our company wants to embrace HTML5 and related technologies. Background: Our Silverlight project did everything from generating its own models (or data contracts), sending it over WCF, tracking changes, with a whole deal of back-end code to make the ride smoother, but often also cluttered and more complex. Most of the original developers for this project are gone, and we want to embrace something new for future projects. Having done this very useful MVC Jump Start course at Microsoft Virtual Academy, we are all fired up for the next project. The problem is that we have very little in-depth knowledge of all the many different components. The most important hereof is probably Entity Framework, and (for later) Web API. I suppose the best place to start is at the Microsoft ASP.NET websites. Are there any other suggestions for learning from more experienced developers? I am a senior developer, but my knowledge of ASP.NET MVC (and related) is very limited. PS: We have a project deadline at the end of this month.

• Computer becomes unreachable on lan after some time

  I work on my laptop and ssh into my desktop. I use a lot of key based authentication for many servers for work but recently I couldn't login because ssh would pick up and try all the keys and it stops trying before ultimately falling back to password based login. So right now I am using this command: ssh -X -o PubkeyAuthentication=no [email protected] #deskto The issue is after sometime the desktop would just become unreachable from laptop. I won't be able to open its localhost through IP and today I tried ping'in it and found a weird thing. Instead of 192.168.1.4, it tries to ping 192.168.1.3 which I am sure is the root cause as it just can't reach 192.168.1.4 when its actually trying for 192.168.1.3 Ping command output: ashfame@ashfame-xps:~$ ping 192.168.1.4 PING 192.168.1.4 (192.168.1.4) 56(84) bytes of data. Update: Even after setting up static IP leases in router settings, I again ran into this issue.

• 12.10 Wireless networking

  I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 using WUBI and cannot connect to the internet. I removed it and downloaded ubuntu 12.04 still cannot connect. This I assume rules out the program being the problem. I reinstalled 12.10. When loaded I get the same message W/red (x) stating Internet not connected. I went to the Settings drop down box and it does not reveal the network list but (enable networking has a ck mark). Am running a HP Laptop with a w/7/64 OS that has a kill switch that indicates (orangeno connection) I downloaded 12.10 on my desktop (on the same network) and everything OK. I tried to follow the instructions in the help menu but got lost and confused . Sincerely Dan Additional Info per request Broadcom 802.11b/g Wlan Internal pc [hp laptop] P.S. I've been out of town for about a month. • I have an "amoeba" game mechanic. Any idea on how to implement it?

  Outside of a tetris clone, a crappy 2D top-down shooter, and some messing around with stuff like Unity and Flixel, I realize that I have yet to complete a single, polished, bells-and-whistles game. I want to change this, and I have an idea for my next project. The idea is that you're an amoeba. Amoebas have these eye-like cores (or something like that, I don't know biology), and you have two of 'em. You control one with WASD and the other with IJKL. There has to be a constant radius of stuff around each of the cores: And the area of the amoeba has to stay constant. So if you move a core in one direction, you increase the amoeba's area, but that increase is compensated by a decrease somewhere else: Aaaaaand I'd like to implement a vagination mechanic. You absorb things by engulfing them, like a boss. Maybe even an extra core, or a needle that pops you and causes all your inner stuff to start gushing out: But here's the problem: I don't know how to make this. However, I would like some ideas on how to implement it. Should I explore physics libraries like Box2D? Or maybe something involving fluid physics? Any help would be much appreciated. P.S. Feel free to steal this idea. I have plenty of ideas. If you do, please tell me how you made it so I can try it myself.

• Google Chrome on Ubuntu 12.04 not rendering webpages correctly

  I am facing some serious web page rendering issues with Chrome. It is more prominent during javascript based animations and stuff on websites like youtube. I have tried removing chrome using (sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable) and then reinstalling it. But the problems still persist. The same webpages work correctly on firefox on ubuntu and chrome on windows. The problem only shows up when I use chrome on ubuntu. I think the issue has started after I updated to the latest version of Chrome. I have used Chrome previously on this machine without any problems. I have attached a image that demonstrates the issue. What could possibly be the problem? • Trouble Installing Codecs libx264 AND libmp3lame

  I am trying to use OpenShot for movie making. My ideal situation is to encode for the web HD, 30 Frames Per Second, to YouTube. This works out great as OpenShot has a setting for this. The problem is when i go to use it I get: "The following formats/codecs are missing from your system: libx264 libmp3lame You will not be able to use the selected export profile. You will need to install the missing formats/codecs or choose a different export profile." I have tried using Synaptic Package Manager and I think I am installing the right "plugins/codecs" yet to no avail or success. I used the instructions found here to remedy: https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1040 I know this impacts OTHER video editing software (in other words it is not specific just to OpenShot). They give the same type of error message when i try to use their presets as well. So in a word "Help!"... Any info is much appreciated!!! PS - If you know of a BETTER way to do this (another software) that is appreciated too! :-D

I have upgraded alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils to 1.0.24 by building from source, thanks to this blog post. • How do I install the Firestorm viewer for Second Life?

Anyways, I am trying to get the Firestorm Viewer for Second Life. • How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? Suggestions please. Thanks in advance. • Mobile development, recommended computer configuration?

  Hi, For the last 4 weeks, I have been trying to get into mobile development. Done a couple of tutorials, read some books, developed a couple of dummy Android apps. The thing is my computer is a 5 years old laptop, it is slow and time has come to replace it and I’m looking at different offers online. Have you got any recommendations? Is there any must-have that should make my developer life easier in the future? Is there anything specific that may be useful at a more advanced stage of development that I just can’t think of right now on the hardware side? (I mean apart from good proc, lots of RAM, many USB ports...) One thing I can think of is to have three OS on the same workstation: Windows, Unix and MacOS (so far I focused on android/java/eclipse but am interested in Iphone/objC/xcode as well) but that’s more on the software side. Anyway, would be grateful for any recommendations. Thanks in advance! • How do i impress employers with my resume?

  I built a entire website from scratch in 10days which looks and feels professional with the site being unique. The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

• Anyone can suggest some Game Frameworks for GNU/Linux? [closed]

  So I've been developing a little bit with XNA + C# in Windows, not really much: just some 2D stuff, but I've found that XNA is a really good framework. I'm a GNU/Linux user, and I'm definitely migrating my desktop to Gentoo Linux (I've been using Arch in my laptop for a while now). But, of course, I need a C# + XNA alternative... I'm not really an expert in any language, so I can really pick up anything (except, maybe, Functional ones), I prefer C-Like languages like Java or Ruby, I tried Python but found the Whitespace syntax confusing. I would like to hear some of you'r suggestions, I'm not asking for "the best", but for "some suggestions", so I think this is objective enough. Probably you're going to suggest C++ + SDL, but I would prefer something more "High Level" like XNA, but I'm open to discuss anything. So... any ideas ? Note: I think this questions meets the guidelines for this site, if it doesn't: please not only downvote this question, but comment on what can I do to improve it. Thanks. PS: 2D Games, not 3D

• Graphical Interface and Object Selection/Manipulation

  I have a project I want to try to implement, but I'm kind of stuck on how to get started. I know there are probably a lot of resources that I can look at, but I'm really just stuck on what to even search for and where to begin. Basically, I have a program written in Java that separates 3D coordinates from a 3D reconstructed model into different objects. I then want to be able to perform a logistic regression on these objects to determine if they are type A or type B. But first, I need to classify a training set of objects as type A or B by hand. I don't know ANYTHING about graphing or user interfaces in Java, so I have been plotting the coordinates of a given object in MATLAB so that I can visualize the object and assign it a type. Now, as I am trying to make this program more "user friendly" I want to create an interface in Java where I can simply graph all the coordinates of the objects from the entire 3D model (on the same graph). • If I want to dual-boot Ubuntu with another OS, what partitioning method should I use?

  I have Ubuntu running as a vm in VirtualBox at the moment, but in the future, if I want to dual-boot it with Windows or another OS installed on my hard-drive, what partitioning method should I use to make room for it? 1)Manually partition my hard drive via disk management in Windows (or the equivalent in another OS), making appropriate room for the main partition upon which Ubuntu will be installed and swap space; 2)Partition via the Ubuntu installer options; 3)Use gparted or another free tool like it. I am uncertain as to why I would want to use one over the other. Lastly, am I correct to think that it would be the acme of foolishness to try to partition drives within a virtual machine (since that partitioning would be inherently limited to the limitations set upon it by the virtualization software, e.g., VirtualBox)? Thanks! P.S. Oh, and I am also planning on not modifying the MBR of Windows if I ever do dual-boot with Ubuntu, using instead a piece of free software (like easyBCD or something) to avoid the headaches of Grub being overwritten by a Windows update.

• Wifi doesn't connect if I'm upstairs

  Hello there, I'm finding that Wifi connects when I'm in the living room, where the internet router etc is. But if I try to connect upstairs it is a no go. Booting in Windows 7 (dual boot :D ) I find that Wifi connects. I find this very confusing and have it since the install. Please help! • Why do Google search results include pages disallowed in robots.txt?

  I have some pages on my site that I want to keep search engines away from, so I disallowed them in my robots.txt file like this: User-Agent: * Disallow: /email Yet I recently noticed that Google still sometimes returns links to those pages in their search results. Why does this happen, and how can I stop it? Background: Several years ago, I made a simple web site for a club a relative of mine was involved in. They wanted to have e-mail links on their pages, so, to try and keep those e-mail addresses from ending up on too many spam lists, instead of using direct mailto: links I made those links point to a simple redirector / address harvester trap script running on my own site. This script would return either a 301 redirect to the actual mailto: URL, or, if it detected a suspicious access pattern, a page containing lots of random fake e-mail addresses and links to more such pages. To keep legitimate search bots away from the trap, I set up the robots.txt rule shown above, disallowing the entire space of both legit redirector links and trap pages. Just recently, however, one of the people in the club searched Google for their own name and was quite surprised when one of the results on the first page was a link to the redirector script, with a title consisting of their e-mail address followed by my name. Of course, they immediately e-mailed me and wanted to know how to get their address out of Google's index. I was quite surprised too, since I had no idea that Google would index such URLs at all, seemingly in violation of my robots.txt rule. I did manage to submit a removal request to Google, and it seems to have worked, but I'd like to know why and how Google is circumventing my robots.txt like that and how to make sure that none of the disallowed pages will show up in their search results. Ps. I actually found out a possible explanation and solution, which I'll post below, while preparing this question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway in case someone else might have the same problem. Please do feel free to post your own answers. I'd also be interested in knowing if other search engines do this too, and whether the same solutions work for them also.

• Duplicated menu, panel indicators and taskbar

  Ubuntu 12.04. The first time I log into Gnome Classic I get a duplicate of every menu, panel indicator and taskbar entry. If I log out and back in again I now have three copies. Log out and log in, four copies and so forth. What would cause this? • Java and C# in web development [on hold]

  I am wondering whether C# development(ASP.NET) is rather kind of "rapid development" or something "big" like JavaEE/Spring? We all know, that RoR or Django are really rapid-development frameworks - and so - is C# closer to Java "long-timed-development" or to frameworks like the two above - Django, RoR? I am, for now, an amateur Java programmer and sometimes I get annoyed with the amount of code that have to be written to create even a short CRUD app. We need a lot of skills to create at least a small app. I want some change, at least for some time and learn something new. I tried (just few hours) first: RoR, then Django and now I am writing in C#. It seems to be like Java but a little bit extended. In respect of future work as a professional coder - Is it profitable to know both competitive technologies like Java (and its frameworks) and C# with .NET(ASP.NET for example)? Maybe better choice is Python? Or just stop being stupid and still work with Java but with another framework(and master my Java skills) or JavaScript, jQuery to be better at web-development? Actually this question depends on your own opinions that is why I know that this question could be blocked by admins. But main question is in the top of the post I mean: is C# web-development rapid or closer to Java? I am afraid, that if I don't try, I will regret in the future, when I awake and think: oh my god, how could I not get familiar with (another_technology_or_language) Thanks for your attention :) ps I had asked the same question on stackoverflow, but it was hold because of being opinion based.
