• Synaptics drivers are not loading on Kubuntu 13.10 on Dell Vostro 2420

  I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. I am able to change position of cursor using touchpad and able to tap (single click and double click) but scrolling is not working I tried to find out solution by searching on google but could not find proper solution to load synaptics drivers. i am listing some details: Laptop: Dell Vostro 2420 Linux Kernel version and distribution: 3.11.0-12-generic, Kubuntu 13.10 output of xinput list is ? • Lexmark E240 printing issues

  I have Lexmark E240 laser printer. I have been using it with 12.04 (32bit) for 2 years with no significant issues. Since lexmark does not support this printer on linux, I used alternatives drivers that were suggested by the community, such as HP-lasterjet, E238, generic PS, etc. They all worked fine, more or less. After upgrading to 14.04 (64bit fresh install) I tried to configure the printer as before, but now I have problems. The test page is ok, but when printing, most of the times, the first page in the document will be printed very partially and in 300% zoom. Next page might be ok. If I turn off the printer and back on, the first page might be ok, but in the next print job, it will be broken again. I used all the above printer options. Same results. I did NOT install the lexmark drivers since they are intended for 12.04 and the package manager report that it is in "bad quality" (don't know why). Does anyone has any experience with this printer in 14.04 64bit ?

• Best industry to work for as a developer.

  Hi guys, Hmmm, StackOverflow now warns me of: "The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed." I've been an avid java (J2SE, JEE) developer for over 5 years now (and I'm not complaining, even though I want to go back to Delphi & C++). My contract has just ended and I'm wondering of possible job to further tackle. I've done banking and insurance industry for all my career (with 1 year on a Fortuner 500 company) and pretty much, banking is the slowest (and boring) industry to work for (IMHO) since they're strict in their business practices (fair enough). The upside is that they pay. My question is: What is the best industry for a developer, who tends to get bored relatively quickly, to work for? Is it also worthwhile for me to do consultancy (and if so, what type of consultancy)? PS There's no gaming industry in South Africa, so suggesting it requires that I have to travel to a country where gaming is alive! I don't see the Community Wiki checkbox, so I don't know how to make this a wiki.

• nvidia-settings error: nvidia driver not in use

  I have an Asus with GEFORCE GT520M CUDA (Optimus) and I am running Kubuntu 12.04, 64bit. I am trying to connect an external monitor through DVI and the monitor is not detected. Nvidia settings dont show properly and each time I fire them up there is a warning message: "You do not appear to be using the NVidia X driver. Please, edit...." (you probably know it and heard of this before). I have googled a lot and I have tried some things out but no luck so far. Is there a solution which has worked for someone out there? If so, please be very specific about what I need to do since I am really not good at using the terminal and generally new to ubuntu. I can use the terminal only to copy-paste things. :) Thanks in advance to everyone! ps. Seems like some people dealt with this by fixing the Nvidia settings problem but the instructions have never been clear enough for me to be able to understand.

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working. • Need to re-build an application - how?

  For our main system, we have a small monitor application that sits outside our network and periodically tries to log in to verify the system still works. We have a problem with the monitor though in that the communications component set (Asta 3 inside Delphi applications) doesn't always connect through. Overall, I'd say it's about 95% reliable, but that other 5% kills the monitor since it will try to log in and hang on the connection attempt (no timeout in the component). This really isn't an issue on the client side of the system since the clients don't disconnect and reconnect repeatedly on the same application instance, but I need a way to make sure the monitor stays up and continues working even when the component fails on a run. I have a few ideas as to which way to have the program run, the main idea being to put the communications inside a threaded data module so that if one thread crashes then another thread can test later and the program keep going. Does this sound like a valid way to go? Any other ideas how to ensure a reliable monitoring application with a less than 100% reliable component? Thanks. P.S. • Why do programmers write closed source applications and then make them free? [closed]

  As an entrepreneur/programmer who makes a good living from writing and selling software, I'm dumbfounded as to why developers write applications and then put them up on the Internet for free. You've found yourself in one of the most lucrative fields in the world. A business with 99% profit margin, where you have no physical product but can name your price; a business where you can ship a buggy product and the customer will still buy it. Occasionally some of our software will get a free competitor, and I think, this guy is crazy. He could be making a good living off of this but instead chose to make it free. Do you not like giant piles of money? Are you not confident that people would pay for it? Are you afraid of having to support it? It's bad for the business of programming because now customers expect to be able to find a free solution to every problem. (I see tweets like "is there any good FREE software for XYZ? or do I need to pay $20 for that".) It's also bad for customers because the free solutions eventually break (because of a new OS or what have you) and since it's free, the developer has no reason to fix it. Customers end up with free but stale software that no longer works and never gets updated. Customer cries. Developer still working day job cries in their cubicle. What gives? PS: I'm not looking to start an open-source/software should be free kind of debate. I'm talking about when developers make a closed source application and make it free.

• Cropping images & SEO

  So I have a page with a bunch of images with largely varying sizes. Also the layout of the page is such that the images are all in the shape of square tiles, so just resizing will cause distorted images. What I've been doing previously is when users upload images, I resize and crop them appropriately and display the new image as the thumbnail and load full image when user clicks on it. However, I just realized this is an issue with SEO as google will crawl the thumbnails and stick the thumbnails on Google Images instead of the full images. Is there any way to show a cropped/resized image but have Google Image show the full image? I can do something with css using an enclosing div and overflow:hidden, but I'd imagine the performance on that would be pretty bad. Any suggestions? Thanks! PS. I saw this (Make google index the actual image not the thumbnail), but in my case I have users continuously uploading images, and the database of images is always changing and pretty big (thousands), so sitemap will be pretty unwieldy..

• What is the best approach for database design with lots of columns?

  I am writing a query based financial application. It lets the user to write complicated equations (much like WHERE part of an SQL query) and find companies matching those criteria. For the above, I currently have more than 500 columns in the database table (each column representing a financial field). Example of Columns are: company_name, sales_annual_00, sales_annual_01, sales_annual_02, sales_annual_03, sales_annual_04, protit_annual_00, profit_annual1...(over 500 such columns). The number of rows is around 5000. Going forward, I would like to further increase the number of columns/financial-fields. For the above I would like to get help regarding: 1) What is the best database design approach? Is it ok to have these many number of columns? 2) How can it be normalized? (User can use any of these fields in search criteria). 3) Is it ok to stick with MySQL, or modern document based databases like MongoDB should be better for it? P.S. (Update): I have been using MySQL till now and a running example of the usage is at: http://screener.in/companies/89/Formula-- In above there around 500 fields/columns to create your query on, however, I seek to increase that number to much more in future.

• Is realtime validation of username good or bad?

  I have a simple form for the user to sign up to my site; with email, username and password fields. We are now trying to implement an ajax validation so the user doesn't have to post the form to find out if the username is already taken. I can do this either on keyup event or on text blur event. My question is, which of these is really the best way to do? Keyup From the user POV, it would be good if the validation is done as and when they are typing, (on key up event) - of course, I am waiting for half a second to see if the user stops typing before firing off the request, and user can make any adjustments immediately. But this means I am sending way more requests than if I validated the username on Blur event. Blur The number of requests will be much lower when the validation is done on blur event, But this means the user has to actually go away from the textbox, look at the validation result, and if necessary go back to it to make any changes and repeat the whole process until he gets it right. I had a quick look at google, tumblr, twitter and no one actually does username validations on keyup events, (heck, tubmlr waits for the form to be posted) but I can swear I have seen keyup validations in a lot of places too. So, coming back to the question, will keyup validations be too many for server, is it an unnecessary overhead? or is it worth taking these hits to give user a better experience? ps: all my regex validations etc are already done on javascript and only when it passes all these other criteria does it send a request to server to check if a username already exists. (And the server is doing a select count(1) from user where username = '' - nothing substantial, but still enough to occupy some resource) pps: I'm on asp.net, MS SQL stack., if that matters.

  I have started lately discovering Content Management Systems, and I was wondering, who is really CMS for? What I mean by that: is it only for companies, small businesses or individuals, that pays a contractor to make a website that it's users can just upload content through a easy interface. Or is it used also by programmers, to build their own websites, projects? Would a Facebook, Tweeter, StackExhange ever started by using a CMS, a very powerful one for example. Would you as a programmer build your own "fancy" website on top of a CMS, for example like Typo3, or you would build it from scratch? P.S To be more clear is a summary: What I mean to begin with is, would I as a developer choose a CMS to develop a website that can be scaled with a big base of users, be stuck if I choose to start with a CMS system. What if I build a website using CMS, and the website explodes in popularity, and then I wanted to add much more functionality that I have planed, is it possible that the CMS will limit the growth, because it might have not been build for that kind of scale?

• Dynamic model interactions

  I am just curious as to how in many games (namely games like arkham asylum/city, manhunt, hitman) do they make it so that your character can "grab" a character in front of you and do stuff to them. I know this may sound very confusing but for an example go to youtube and search "hitman executions", and the first video is an example of what i'm asking. Basically I'm wondering how they make your model dynamically interact with whatever other model you come across, so in hitman when you come up behind some one with the fibre wire you strangle the other character or if you have the anesthetic you come up behind some person and put your hand over there mouth while they struggle and slowly go to the floor where you lay them down. I am confused as to whether it was animated to use two models using specific bone/skeletal identifiers, if it is just two completely separate animations that are played at the correct time to make it look like they are actually interacting or something else all together. I am not an animator so i assume most of what i just said is not right but i hope that some one can understand what i mean and provide an answer. PS) I am a programmer and I am in the process of building a hitmanesque game, just because i love that style of game and I want to increase my skills on something fun, so if you do know what i'm talking about have some examples with involving both models and programming (i use c++ and mainly Ogre3D at the moment but i am getting into unity and XNA) i would greatly appreciate it. • ADF Faces Skin Editor - How to Work with It

  The ODTUG Kscop11 conference was a great success with lots of sessions about FMW running in a special track. I did several sessions and labs in the conference, and I thought it might be a good idea to at least give you a taste of what you might have missed. So here is most of what I demoed in my ADF Faces Skinning session (not all though - that session was 60 minutes long, and while everyone did end up going out of the building in the middle because of a fire drill for about 5 minutes, there was other things covered in the session as well). In the demo here you'll see how to generate new images and default color scheme, how to identify a component class with Firebug, how to skin a component, how to identify the global selector of a property, how to change fonts and how to change strings. By the way, for more on ADF Skinning you should also listen to the ADF Insider seminar that Frank Nimphius recorded on skinning, it will give you better understanding of the overall skinning process. P.S. in the demo I add an entry to the web.xml file which prevent ADF Faces from compressing the HTML that is generated. The entry is for org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.DISABLE_CONTENT_COMPRESSION  and I set it to true. This is very useful when you work on creating the skin, but don't forget to un-set it before you go production.

• ubuntu 12.04 desktop Error: unknown command 'gfxmode'. Pressing any key continues

  Premise: linux noobie here, I have the same issue as OP: fresh 12.04 desktop, changed grub with grub customizer, now I get a: unknown command 'gfxmode' press ...etc was asked to "re-post" this question and link to this thread which I refer to above. I have tried what Tarek said, and nothing seems to work, I find two lines with gfxmode: function gfxmode { gfxmode \$linux_gfx_mode Note: not sure if it matter but in the error the two single quotes before gfxmode are not the same, the first is a slanted quote mark, the second (after gfxmode) is a straight one. I commented out the whole line, I tried to add 'set' before gfxmode, neither did any difference. I found another place that said to remove the line from another file 40_custom, but I checked and those files do not contain anything relating to the line we are looking for: gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode Not sure what I am missing, but the file linux.save has recently appeared when searching for the line. Not sure if its just a temp file of some kind. In any case I cannot seem to get it, what am I missing? Thanks! P.S. sorry for any messups in form :)

• How can I get cross-browser consistent behavior for TR heights within a table with a set height? [migrated]

  I have an arbitrary number of tables with an arbitrary number of rows in each, and all tables are the same height. My initial approach was to just set the overall height of the table and hope the rows were smart enough to distribute themselves appropriately. That's not the case. I have 4 different behaviors going on with 4 browsers, but I need them to all render at the very least in a similar way. Safari & Chrome (WebKit): All rows are equal height, creating scroll bars as needed and fitting within table height. Firefox: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Additionally, If the content of the rows does not take up all of the height, only the part of the table with content in it takes the background (though it seems, through use of Firebug, that the actual table [and TR] extend to the bottom of the proper table height). IE: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Obviously this only includes one version of each browser and additional variation would likely appear with more being tested. Ideally, a solution where the browser renders TRs with less content smaller than those with larger content, while still using scrolling within the variable height TRs when the overall height of the table is not enough would be optimum. I could potentially see a solution to achieve that with JS, but can it be done with CSS? Or, if not, can the behavior that WebKit displays be made to work across the browsers? Thanks! • OS choice for functional developing

  I'm mainly a .NET developer so I normaly use Windows/VisualStudio (that means: I'm spoiled) but I'm enjoying Haskell and other (mostly functional) languagues in my spare time. Now for Haskell the windows-support is ok (you can get the Haskell-Platform) but latley I tried to get a basic Clojure/Scheme environment set up and it's just a pain on windows. So I'm thinking about trying out another OS for better tooling and languague support. Of course that leaves me with MacOS or some Linux distribution. I never used MacOS before and of course Linux would be cheaper (free) and I don't think I can parallel-boot MacOS on your normal PC-Hardware (can you?). PLUS: I don't have a clue about the tools you can use on those (to me) forign OSs. To make it short: I want to explore more Haskell, Clojure, Scala, Scheme and of course need at least good tooling for JavaScript/HTML5/Css. Support for .NET/Mono/F# would be great but for this I will still have my Win7 boot. So I like to know: - what is your prefered OS, Distribution (is Ubuntu viable?) - what Editor/IDE are you using Thank you for your help! • Dual boot on Hp Envy Ultrabook

  I just bought a HP Envy ultrabook 1002TX. It comes with a Win7 Home basic and a 32GB SSD + 500GB HDD. I started to install ubuntu and in doing so went and deleted all the partitions on my HDD and recreated them the way I wanted. Then when I tried to install ubuntu it didn't recognize my HDD. To solve this i typed dmraid -E -r /dev/sdX where the 'X' was my SSD drive. After this ubuntu can install but windows for some reason does not install. Also the Intel Caching feature is lost and SSD is just sitting and doing nothing. I want to know how to solve this problem. Ideeally I would like to use the SSD for caching, either in windows or ubuntu. How do I get the SSD back to working as an Intel rapid cache? How do I get windows to install properly? It tell me that windows is unable to configure itself to my hardware, and my PC came with windows pre-installed so this is not possible. Sorry for the long question and thanks for your answers! PS: At one time when I booted I pressed Ctrl+i and went to the intel rapid cache menu. I think i screwed up something in here, because only after this the rapid cache stopped working, and each time I booted the PC thought the BIOS was my primary disk.

• Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

  I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.

• How do I keep controversy in check?

  This is probably OT but it's less OT here than on any other SO site, so please bear with me. I'm working on a new project votEm. The goal is to give independent candidates a platform to introduce themselves to get elected for a political office. My main reason is that today, it's too expensive to run for an office. Some politicians in the US spend as much as 30 million dollars (!) for a single campaign. That money is better spent elsewhere. In a similar fashion, people who want to change countries like Egypt, could use such a platform to present themselves. Now I expect a lot of emotions and pressure on my site. People with a lot of money (and a lot to lose) will try to game it (political parties, secret services of ... errr ... "not 100% democratic countries", big companies, ...) To avoid as many mistakes as possible, I need a list of resources, ideas and tips how to keep such a site out of too much trouble. PS: I'd make this CW but the option seems to be gone...
