• Force Windows to cache executables without running them?

  Is there a way to force Windows to pre-load certain EXE/DLL binaries into its prefetch/superfetch cache as if they had been executed? I have a particular application that loads pretty slowly on first run but if it's "warm" (recently executed) it starts pretty quickly. I'd like to prime the cache early in the background before the application is needed. But since it shows a UI, I'm looking for a way to do this silently. So simply launching the application it isn't ideal. Thanks you in advance. Prompted by David's suggestion in the comments, I wrote a PowerShell script to memory map the files, seek to the end, and close them. I haven't done any controlled tests yet and it could just be my imagination, but Sublime Text (the application in question) appeared to load much more quickly this time around and I haven't used it for several hours.

• Running WAMP (XAMPP) and LAMP from One SSD, On 64-bit Windows and Linux Machines

  I have an solid state drive that I develop websites on. The reason I do this is because I work on a few different computers. Historically, I created separate developing environments to use for each machine. This was OK, but if the system changed for some reason, eg, new OS install, it was a pain. So I bought a USB 3.0 enclosure and put a solid state drive in there and it's pretty darn fast, which is good. I was working with three Windows machines and I could simply hook up the drive, launch my XAMPP server and away I went, developing websites: using Dreamweaver, Komodo, Notepad++, Eclipse, etc. Recently, however, one of my Windows machines' hard drive went down and instead of going back to Windows in this case, I went with Ububntu 12.04. I have several Ubuntu workstations and servers and I like Linux, so I thought his was a great opportunity to transition. I went to work installing and trying to set up a LAMP server and, besides from XAMPP 64-bit compatibility out of the box, I'm seeing other issues with getting this Linux server running. I will keep trying to resolve this, but in the meantime... my question is, has anyone ever successfully run both WAMP and LAMP from the same SSD (formatted to NTFS)? I'm sure there are lots of barriers to this happening, like local file system, OS libraries, dependencies, etc. But I was thinking it would be cool if it could be done. I'm no expert, so if this is just plain old stupid, please don't hesitate to let me know.

• Running a program causes everything afterwards to minimize

  I just installed LoL (league of legends) on my computer. The problem is that almost every time after I play the game, it minimizes all my windows which is really annoying. What is worse however is that afterwards other programs do this as well. Is there any way to fix this? What can cause such a strange behavior?? I recently installed the internet driver. Hopefully that is not the problem because this is the third internet card for this computer. I have noticed that my internet is messing up as well.

• Powershell Script Scheduled Task Stopped Running (Could not Start)

  I'm running a scheduled task (for Powershell Script) on Windows 2003 Server. I believe the script works fine. The task is scheduled to run every 10 minutes from 7:00am to 11:50pm everyday. However, it never gets to run more for than a day. It always stops some time in the afternoon (between 2pm and 6pm). I'm not sure exactly what happened but I always get the error The attempt to log on to the account associated with the task failed, therefore, the task did not run. The specific error is: 0x80070569: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. Verify that the task's Run-as name and password are valid and try again. It seems like most people with this error are saying that they need to make user "logon as a batch job". However, this option is greyed-out for me. I search for other places where users have similar problems but the solutions are not written in detail (some of them have something to do with GPO). I've only used the basic features of Windows Server and I have no clue how to get to the place they are referring to. Can someone please confirm whether "logon as a batch job" is indeed a solution and provide a detailed walkthrough on how to solve my problem? Thanks. p.s. someone suggested the website http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755659(v=ws.10) I tried to followed the method for web server with domain. However, got stuck on the 6th step where it mentions Group Policy Object. I don't know where it is.

  Hello, Is it possible to run CF commands inside an HTML file by updating Apache configs/htaccess file? When I searched online, I didn't come across any answers for CF, saw several posting for PHP (perhaps I am not searching for the right terms ... ?). Specifically, we have CF 6 (I know, don't say it) on Solaris, and Apache 2, and was thinking of using this line: AddType application/x-httpd-coldfusion .html so we can use cfinclude inside the HTML files, but this did not work. • Robocopy (without /l flag) running for hours making log file huge, but not actually copying anything

  Here's my command: Robocopy C: C:\C_root /FP /BYTES /TEE /S /E /COPYALL /DCOPY:T /MOVE /Z /ETA /XJ /R:2 /W:30 /XF pagefile.sys /XD /LOG:C:\robocopy.log. BTW, notice the /XD option above. After that I had a few directories that I want to omit. I showed these between angle brackets like this: (left angle bracket) a few dirs I wanted to exclude (right angle bracket). Amongst these dirs was the C_root dir itself, so that it did not get into an "infinite" recursion. (This part was stripped from the post because angle brackets apparently have a meta-meaning to superuser.com about hyperlinks.) The command window this was running in listed a few "EXTRA" files then "hung". By this, I mean no more output, no cmnd prompt, and if I tried to scroll it up, it would immediately scroll right back to the bottom. After about six hours, it finally finished, although I never got a cmnd prompt back in the window I started it in. DIR shows the log file at more than 1.3GB, but when I try to do a MORE on it, I get "Cannot access file". C:\C_root never grew larger. Does anyone have an idea what is going on here?

• Different behaviour when running exe from command prompt than in windows

  Forgive me if I'm not using the correct terminology here but I'll try to explain the issue I'm having as best I can! We use a program that allows you to view video footage from several cameras, and it works in such a way that when it is opened it then automatically loads several video files within its interface. These video files are stored in a subfolder, e.g. "videos\video1.asf", etc. I didn't create the program so I can't say what method it uses to open the files. The files are stored on a network server and are being accessed via a share/UNC path. When the file is run from windows explorer (by navigating to the network share and double-clicking the exe), it works perfectly. When the file is run via the (elevated) command prompt (e.g. by typing the \server\path\to\file.exe) it opens, but the corresponding video files do not load. I am trying to create a script that launches the program via the command prompt, so the first step is finding out why the two actions above have different consequences. Any advice on how running executables from the command prompt could produce a different result would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using applescript to tell terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them. • Extract X11 configuration information from running instance.

  Since I had a hard disk die on me, I figured I could easily try some other OS (I usually run Ubuntu). Turns out that Ubuntu flawlessly recognizes my video card and monitor (X11 works right out of the box), and none of the other systems I tried gets anything working (I tried CentOS and FreeBSD). In my now working version of Ubuntu I cannot find a configuration file with information I could try to use with one of the other versions, which makes me guess that it just detects the hardware every time. Can I extract its choice for drivers and configuration options somehow (so I can try these same options in the other systems)?

Unfortunately these softwares don't like each other. Is there a way to get them play along? The exact problem is that if I install the SDK, VMWare won't even update or run. There is only one way to make them work. Switch Hyper-V on and off. Which is one restart all the time.

  I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware. • Can I hide running applications from the unity launcher?

  When running UNE 10.10 I often have several applications running which on a traditional GNOME desktop environment would be running purely in the background and would only be visible from the system tray. Good examples would be tomboy when hidden or redshift. Unfortunately Unity shows a running application in the launcher (dock) for these applications even though they already have appindicators visible in the sys tray. Is there any way to configure/force Unity not to show icons in the dock for certain applications?

• Nginx1.6.1: Installing from source not running corectly

  I just installed Nginx 1.6.1 from source but it didn't seem to installed correctly. Nginx is running if I service nginx status but when I do nginx -v it outputs command not found. Regular HTML page shows fine and there is no error in the error logs. I am on AWS Ec2 linux AMI. • Silverlight WCF method calls fails if WCF service is not running initially

  Quite simply I have a generic Silverlight 3.0 web page that is calling a Ping method on a WCF service. I do not have the WCF service running initially when I navigate to this Silverlight page. As expected I get a communication exception when I press the Silverlight button to call the Ping method, which I catch. Now if I start the WCF service and press the Ping button I still get the communication exception. How come? The other scenario is the WCF is running when I navigate to the SL page and the Ping method call works. I turn off the WCF service, ping method fails. Turn it back on and the ping method succeeds. How come if it's not running initially the ping method fails always? I could include some sample code if you'd like but this is just a real simple Hello World example using basichttpbinding, straight out the book. Thanks, Craig

  I'm trying to make a custom Ubuntu Server iso file. Kickstart file (ks.cfg) runs smooth when there is no %post in the file and Ubuntu installs correctly with ks configuration. Installation finishes installing base, apt, grub and It echos: Kickseed Running... and it freezes @ 0% I thought may be apt-get update doesnt work in ks file, I tried to install other apps like apache2 but no luck I have created dozen iso images and installed them in Virtual Box.I have been googling for 3 days and checked out ubuntu forums but haven't figured out the issue. • Can't detect wireless networks, running ubuntu 9.10 on eeepc 1000he

  Hi, I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an ASUS eeepc 1000HE, and my wireless card, RaLink RT 2860, is failing to recognize any wireless networks. It was working fine this morning, until I accidentally hit Fn F2, disabling the wireless card. I hit Fn F2 again to reenable it, but it no longer will detect any wireless networks (and other computers in the household do recognize them). Any help at all will be greatly appreciated! I googled quite a bit and talked to a human about this but could not fix it. • Double MySQL Running on Mountain Lion

  After I've done a full restart, my Apache PHP server doesn't connect to Local MySQL ( connecting via 127.0.0.1 because localhost for some reason fails always ). So I did this today: ? ~ mysqladmin shutdown -u root -p Enter password: ? ~ mysqladmin shutdown -u root -p Enter password: mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists! Which basically means that I succeeded in shutting down mysql. But as soon as I did - Apache PHP successfully connect to MySQL and my local sites work without a hiccup until the next restart. • Able to ping but cannot browse after several hours running of my python program

  It's a GUI program I wrote in python checking website/server status running on my XP SP3, multi threads are used to check different site/server. After several hours running, the program starts to get urlopen error timed out all the time, and this always happens right after a POST request from a server(not a certain one, might be A or B or C), and it's also not the first POST request causing the problem, normally after several hours running and it happens to make a POST request at an unknown moment, all you get from then on is urlopen error timed out. I'm still able to ping but cannot browse any site, once the program closed everything's fine. It's definitely the program causing this problem, well I just don't know how to debug/check what the problem is, also don't know if it's from OS side or my program wasting too many resources/connections(are you still able to ping when too many connections used?), would anybody please help me out?

(Also could not find instructions on how to reset admin password.)   I wrote a bash-script to check if a process is running. It doesn't work since the ps command always returns exit code 1. When I run the ps command from the command-line, the $? is correctly set, but within the script it is always 1. • Problems with VBScript - RegRead when running as a service

  I am working on a script that runs under a custom installation utility, which is running as a service. To get the current user name the script executes this command: str_Acct_Name_Val = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Logon User Name" str_Acct_Name = RegRead(str_Acct_Name_Val) When I run the script from the command prompt, it can read that value just fine (under an administrator account). When the value is attempted to be read with service/local system privileges, the read fails. What is the problem here? EDIT: Some additional information. When running as a service calling the current user name returns "SYSTEM" and my guess is that HKCU doesn't "exist" under the view of the SYSTEM, since there is technically no current user. There is a user logged in at the time, but not in the scope of the running script. Maybe there is somewhere in HKLM I could find the currently logged on user?

• Crystal Reports: global variable running total not displaying in header

  Using Crystal Reports I'm trying to display the running total of a database field in the header where all the labels are. I've attempted to do this by placing the running total (RTversion) into a formula field with the following: Shared stringvar CurrentVers; CurrentVers := {#CurrentVers}; and then in the page header section I have the following: Shared stringvar CurrentVers; EvaluateAFter({#currentVers}); CurrentVers; with {#CurrentVers} running the 1st largest number. Is this incorrect? Update: The goal is to display the latest version in the header near the labels to show what the current verseion is for comparison.

• GAE API to find where the app is running - local machine OR gae cloud

  Hi, I have a Google App engine application that I want to work differently depending upon if it is running in my local dev environment (i.e. with dev_appserver.py) as against running in actual GAE cloud. Currently I use a flag variable that I manually toggle to achieve that. But I am sure one day I will forget to change it and will lead to problem. So I would like to know if there is an API or some other way to figure out where the GAE app is actually running? Thanks.
