• How To Create An ASP.NET Designer Host

  I have been asked to build an application where I can drag and drop few WebControls onto the WebPage designer surface. So far I have read some articles on .NET Framework Design-Time architecture, like, MSDN Article: Hosting WinForms Designers, Developer Function Article etc. But I can't a find a way to host WebForms designer. The only open source implementation that I could find was Mono Develop ASP.NET Visual Designer. But in mono they have used GTK# & Gecko etc to host the designer. I can't find a way to do the same using WinForms. Please suggest me what should I do. Give me some pointers. Should I go ahead and implement it using GTK# and Gecko? PS: My requirement is not very huge. I need just a way to drag and drop simple web controls and save the page.

  Suppose you are a project manager. You can estimate an effort in days for specific task for specific developer. After performing estimation you obtain some min and max values. After this you delegate a task to developer. Actually you also set up deadline. Which estimation is better to use when set up deadline: min or max? As I see min estimation can result in stress for developer, max estimation can result in using all the time which is allocated to developer even if task can be complete faster (so called Student syndrome). Which other pros and cons of two approaches? Small clarification: I speak about setting up deadlines for subordinates when delegating the task, NOT for reporting to my boss.

• Flash movies in inactive browser tabs pause or don't execute in real time

  I'm noticing some unexpected behavior. Some time in the last few months, a change in either Firefox, the Flash player, or both, has made it so that Flash movies that are in inactive browser tabs no longer execute in real time. They appear to still execute, but only in bursts, and not in a predictable way. This is a problem because I develop a Flash-based (Actionscript 2.0, Flash CS3) multiplayer game that maintains a network connection and allows players to chat, etc. Many of our players complain about Firefox crashing while playing the game. I have noticed it too, not too frequently, but it crashes several times a week. (Firefox crashes, I do not get a message from Flash player that indicates an infinite loop or problem in my code) My theory is that this new behavior is causing crashes when there is a lot of activity in my game, leading to lots of unhandled network traffic for my game getting buffered before Firefox/Flash will give it a chance to execute. Maybe this leads to a buffer overflow or missing packets, and as a result, something crashes. At times I will switch back to the tab that is running my game and discover a display bug, which looks as though Flash has simply failed to execute something that it was supposed to. I would assume this new behavior is on purpose, for example to prevent all the Flash-based advertisements in inactive tabs from executing and therefore killing performance. In a quick test on Chrome (5.0.342.9 beta), this "pausing" of Flash seems to be there as well, but somehow it seems much less of a problem. My users have only complained about Firefox crashing, not other browsers. My machine: Windows 7 x64 Firefox 3.6.3 Flash Player 10.1.50.426 My game: triplejack.com Any ideas? Ideally I'd like to disable this behavior for my Flash game so it can execute in real time even when in an inactive tab. Thanks for any help!

• What learning habits can you suggest?

  Hi, Our profession often requires deep learning; sitting down and reading, and understanding. I'm currently undergoing an exam period, and I'm looking for ways to learn more effectively. I'm not asking about what to learn, or whether to prefer blogs over books, etc. My question is much more physical than that - What do you do when need to study, and I mean study hard? I'm looking for answers such as I slice my time to 2.5 hours intervals and make a break between them, but never during. I keep a jar of water nearby. I wake up at 6 o'clock sharp and start my day with a session at the gym. What good learning habits did acquire, or wish you had acquired? (I know this isn't strictly programming related, but it is programmers related)

• Why are my basic Heroku Apps Taking 2 seconds to load?

  I have created two very simple heroku apps to test out the service, but it's often taking several seconds to load the page when I first visit them: Cropify - Basic Sinatra App (on github) Textile2HTML - Even more basic Sinatra App (on github) All I did was create a simple sinatra app and deploy it. I haven't done anything to mess with or test the heroku servers. What can I do to improve response time? It's very slow right now and I'm not sure where to start. • Should the entity framework + self tracking entities be saving me time

  I've been using the entity framework in combination with the self tracking entity code generation templates for my latest silverlight to WCF application. It's the first time I've used the entity framework in a real project and my hope was that I would save myself a lot of time and effort by being able to automatically update the whole data access layer of my project when my database schema changed. Happily I've found that to be the case, updating my database schema by adding a new table, changing column names, adding new columns etc. etc. can be propagated to my business object classes by using the update from database option on the entity framework model. Where I'm hurting is the CRUD operations within my WCF service in response to actions on my Silverlight client. I use the same self tracking entity framework business objects in my Silverlight app but I find I'm continually having to fight against problems such as foreign key associations not being handled correctly when updating an object or the change tracker getting confused about the state of an object at the Silverlight end and the data access operation within the WCF layer throwing a wobbly. It's got to a point where I have now spent more time dealing with this quirks than I have on my previous project where I used Linq-to-SQL as the starting point for rolling my own business objects. Is it just me being hopeless or is the self tracking entities approach something that should be avoided until it's more mature?

  Hi, I use the Searchable plugin with Grails I have the need to change the directory to which Compass points to, depending upon a UI choice by the user. Normally, this value is set in the compassConnection variable of the searchable map in grails-app/conf/Searchable.groovy, like so, and gets called at app startup time: searchable { compassConnection = new File( "/path/to/index/file/directory" ).absolutePath ... } To do what I need to do, I think that I need to get a handle into the compass config variable and then call config.setConnection("/new/path/to/index/dir") I don't know how I can get a reference to the config compass variable Am I right in assuming that I need to call setConnection(String) only, or is(are) there any other step(s) I need to take? Really appreciate any help that I can get, Shailen

  We develop a WinForm application using Scintilla.NET (1.7) component, which uses SciLexer.dll (unamnaged). At run-time, we distribute both 32bit and 64bit SciLexer.dll, and we load the correct one when the application starts (everything works fine).   I am trying to implement a real-time application which involves IPC across different modules. The modules are doing some data intensive processing. I am using message queue as the backbone(Activemq) for IPC in the prototype, which is easy(considering I am a totally IPC newbie), but it's very very slow. Here is my situation: I have isolated the IPC part so that I could change it other ways in future. I have 3 weeks to implement another faster version. ;-( IPC should be fast, but also comparatively easy to pick up I have been looking into different IPC approaches: socket, pipe, shared memory. However, I have no experience in IPC, and there is definitely no way I could fail this demo in 3 weeks... Which IPC will be the safe way to start with? Thanks. Lily

• Slow Databinding setup time in C# .NET 4.0

  Hello, I have got a problem. I have windows forms application with dynamic generated layout, but i have a problem in performance. In this form i use DataBinding from .NET 4.0 and databinding after setup works fine, but he binding setup time for ONE control blocking my application on approx 0.7 second. I have some controls and time of binging setuping is around 2 minutes. I trying all possible solutions, I dont have any ideas without write self binding class.   So I have a uipicker view, that I have managed to load some data from my db into. I would like to update a textview, which is right above the pickerview, with each changing of the row. Is that possible? If I don't have to, I would like to avoid pushing a button in order to show the respective text. Can I make it so that the value in the text field changes with the value of the rowselected in the pickerview, in real time? Any thoughts or code snippets would be appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm writing a kind of HTTP proxy, so I need to be able to do 3 things: Parse an HTTP-date given any of the 3 formats specified in RFC 2616, sec 3.3, Convert a file date-time to an HTTP-date string, and Output the date to a string. For reference, theses are examples of the date-times I need to parse. I will output only the first format: Sun, 06 Nov 1994 08:49:37 GMT ; RFC 822, updated by RFC 1123 Sunday, 06-Nov-94 08:49:37 GMT ; RFC 850, obsoleted by RFC 1036 Sun Nov 6 08:49:37 1994 ; ANSI C's asctime() format I'm pretty sure Boost date_time can do all of this, but I'm having some trouble with number 1. Does anyone already have code to do this? Perhaps I'm not using google proficiently, but I can't find an example of how to do this with boost anywhere. Thanks for any help!

• how to handle it if the management just keep on giving me spec after spec non-stop?

  As a programmer, I feel burnt out if the management give me spec after spec, day after day. I think I can code 6 hours a day very focused, but non-stop coding does burn me out a little, especially it is 1 year or 18 months non-stop. A mere 1 week or 2 week vacation per year isn't going to help much. Sometimes I want to take some time to learn new things, or just to take a break for a month so as to re-charge, like back in college when we have holidays for 1 month during winter or 2.5 months during summer. What do you think?

• Is GAE Really GZipping My Content? Slow Response Times with GAE as CDN

  I am testing out Google App Engine as a free Content Delivery Network and it feels like it's taking a long time to serve up my content. Why does this gae page take a say a half a second to download, while your typical stack overflow page downloads much faster even with a ton more content? What am I missing here? All I have done is create an app and uploaded an image according to that tutorial, but content is being served very slowly it seems. Any suggestions? (Not considering Amazon or other CDNs right now, just looking for help with GAE). Note: I am using Safari when I visit those links, maybe safari is causing problems?

• How to make a mutable ItemizedOverlay

  Hey all, I would like to make a Google map overlay with changable pins. An easy way to visualize this would be to think of a near real time overlay, where the pins are constantly changing location. However, I can't seem to think of a safe way to do this with the ItemizedOverlay. The problem seems to be the call to populate - If size() is called by some maps thread, and then my data changes, then the result when the maps call accesses getItem() can be an IndexOutOfBoundsException. Can anyone think of a better solution than overloading populate and wrapping super.populate in a synchronized block? Perhaps I could get better luck using a normal Overlay? The Itemized one seems to exist to manage the data for you, perhaps I am making a fundamental mistake by using it? Thanks for any help, my brain is hurting! Hamy

  I have a Flash website template (four pages) that I made using AS 3.0 and Flash CS4. It is for an assignment involving movie clips. Currently on the main time line there is only one frame, and three layers: actions/menu/content. The actionscript on the main time line is simply: content_mc.stop (); There is a movie clip on the stage called “Content” that contains the content for each of the pages. Inside of that there is a “Menu” movie clip that contains and controls all of the navigation buttons.   I am working on a program that extracts real time quote for 900+ stocks from a website. I use HttpWebRequest to send HTTP request to the site and store the response to a stream and open a stream using the following code: HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); Stream stream = response.GetResponseStream (); StreamReader reader = new StreamReader( stream ) the size of the received HTML is large (5000+ lines), so it takes a long time to parse it and extract the price. For 900 files, It takes about 6 mins for parsing and extracting. Which my boss isn't happy with, he told me he'd want the whole process to be done in TWO mins. I've identified the part of the program that takes most of time to finish is parsing and extracting. I've tried to optimize the code to make it faster, the following is what I have now after some optimization: // skip lines at the top for(int i=0;i<1500;++i) reader.ReadLine(); // read the line that contains the price string theLine = reader.ReadLine(); // ... extract the price from the line now it takes about 4 mins to process all the files, there is still a significant gap to what my boss's expecting. So I am wondering, is there other way that I can further speed up the parsing and extracting and have everything done within 2 mins?

• Javascriptlibrary more efficient than Rickshaw for realtime visualizations

  I want to visualize data as time-series graphs on mobile devices(tablets) and therefore stumbled upon rickshaw, which is based on D3. First I must say I was a little bit confused when I realized that realtime in web design is defined totally different to realtime in engineering which has fixed(and often very short) timeframes. Anyway my aim is to visualize the data as fast as possible, and on older tablets visualization with rickshaw is quite slow. Can anybody recommend another library, which may be more efficient in rendering? Or is there no way out and I have to go native? regards Dan.

• App crashes every second time a tableview row is selected in navigation controller setup

  Disclaimer first: I'm pretty new to Objective-C and the retain model. I've been developing in a garbage collected .NET environment for the last five years, so I've been spoiled. I'm still learning. I'm having my iPhone app crash with EXC_BAD_ACCESS. It happens in a navigtation controller/tableview setup. When I select a row the first time, no problems. It switches in the child controller without problems. I go back and select the same row again. Program then proceeds to crash. Every other row works fine, but every second time a row is accessed, it's a crash. I've pinpointed the location where this happens. The child controller (which is a class that I reuse for every row of the same type) that's being switched into has an array of NSString's representing the rows that will be displayed. I set it before pushing the child viewcontroller. It's there where this apparently happens. I'm having a hard time debugging this problem, still wrestling with xcode and all. I fear there may be some vital information missing here, but maybe there is something you recognize here.

• controlling bluetooth connection in matlab

  we have a project in which we have to pick randomly generated numbers from a remote device, say mobile. there is a simple java application to generate numbers. next, we have to recieve those numbers in our matlab program via bluetooth connection with the device. assuming those numbers are temperature readings, we want to recieve a new number after every 10 sec and display the number on our matlab GUI program. the problem is do we implement bluetooth protocol through our programming? or use the matlab templates? because otherwise whenever we want to transfer file from a mobile to computer, we have to manually click "recieve a file" in blutooth wizard , just like we normally do to transfer a file. we want to enable the connection once, and then recieve text files after every 10 seconds to be read in our matlab program. can anyone please tell is it even possible in matlab? if yes, how do we establish such an automatic real time connection?
