• Is there a way to watch all COM activity on a computer?

  I'm trying to deal with a piece of specialized hardware, that presents it's interface as a COM object, using win32com in Python. However, the documentation for how to actually set up the hardware through the COM object is sparse (it requires a significant amount of initialization), and entirely oriented at using a bunch of pre-built libraries for Visual Studio, which are not accessible through python. That said, is there any way to watch all local COM activity, so I can sort through the activity logs to try and figure out how the existing demo programs properly initialize the hardware, and replicate the behavior in my python script? Ideally, there would be something in the vein of wireshark for doing this. Note: I have very little (read: basically no) experience using COM, as my focus is mostly embedded hardware (and a little python dev on the side). However, I'm stuck with this particular device.

  I want to use document.createDocumentFragment() to create an optimized collection of HTML elements that contain ".data" coming from jQuery (v 1.4.2), but I'm kind of stuck on how to get the data to surface from the HTML elements. I suspect it's probably something with .cloneNode() not carrying over the data when the element is appended to the documentFragment. • set label value in vb.net

  Hi-- I'm usually a PHP guy but got stuck doing a project in vb.net. I have a query (sqldatasource) that returns a single value (the last update date). I want to use a label to say something like "Last updated: " < Label = (returned value) In PHP this would be simple. In vb.net, all I can find are endless badly written code behinds showing how you'd execute the query onLoad then bind it to the label. Is this really the only way to do this? It seems like a ridiculously simple problem to have such a long solution. I have used a datagrid control to just bind the query result directly, but it prints the column name as well as the date, so it's not ideal. Any ideas?

• Running tasks in the background with lower CPU priority

  I have a feature in my CMS that allows a user to upload a zip file full of images and the server will extract them and insert each one into an image gallery. I've noticed that this grinds up the CPU quite severely and causes other requests to slow down. I'm thinking of using the delayed_job plugin to delegate each image addition into the background, but I also want to give that process a lower CPU priority so that it doesn't bog down the server. I'm pretty confident in the delaying part of the exercise, but the throttling part is where I'm stuck. Is there a ruby way of lowering the priority of a method call? It's the image resizing that causes the CPU chew. Any ideas welcome :)

• 8-direction path finding algorithm

  I'm having trouble finding the right pathfinding algorithm for some AI I'm working on. I have players on a pitch, moving around freely (not stuck to a grid), but they are confined to moving in 8 directions (N NE E etc.) I was working on using A*, and a graph for this. But I realised, every node on the graph is equally far apart, and all the edges have the same weight - since the pitch is rectangular. And the number of nodes is enormous (being a large pitch, with them able to move between 1 pixel and another) I figured there must be another algorithm, optimised for this sort of thing?

• Optimising local image loading/rendering on iPhone

  Hi, I'm looking to create an interface where the user can navigate through large volumes of images. Each image has a thumbnail of 128x128 that I wish to display and will be kind of similar to coverflow in operation. I have this all working in principle but am becoming stuck when navigating through content at speed. The interface begins to stutter and becoming jerky. I believe this is primarily because of disk i/o and the cost of rendering each image. Is there anyway this can be handed over to a seperate thread simply? Defaulting to a greyed out thumbnail until the image has loaded? How have Apple managed to achieve this in coverflow? Many thanks,

• How do I set ORDER BY params using prepated PDO statement?

  I'm having problems using params in the ORDER BY section of my SQL. It doesn't issue any warnings, but prints out nothing. $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT field from table WHERE column = :my_param ORDER BY :order :direction"); $stmt->bindParam(':my_param', $is_live, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':order', $order, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':direction', $direction, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->execute(); The :my_param works, but not :order or :direction. Is it not being internally escaped correctly? Am I stuck inserting it directly in the SQL?   Hey all, I'm not much of a database guru so I would like some advice. Background We have 4 tables that are currently stored in Sybase IQ. We don't currently have any choice over this, we're basically stuck with what someone else decided for us. Sybase IQ is a column-oriented database that is perfect for a data warehouse. Unfortunately, my project needs to do a lot of transactional updating (we're more of an operational database) so I'm looking for more mainstream alternatives. Question Given these tables' dimensions, would anyone consider SQL Server or Oracle to be a viable alternative? • jQuery drag drop slower for more DIV items

  Hi there, I have got a hierarchichal tags (with parent child relationship) in my page and it will account to 500 - 4500 (can even grow). When i bound the draggable and droppable for all i saw very bad performance in IE7 and IE6. The custom helper wont move smoothly and was very very slow. Based on some other post i have made the droppable been bound/unbound on mouseover and mouseout events (dynamically). Its better now. But still i dont see the custom helper move very smoothly there is a gap between the mouse cursor and the helper when they move and gets very bad when i access the site from remote. Please help me to address this performance issue. Am totally stuck here.. :(

  Hello, I am biulding an e-shop that will have configurable products. The configurable parts will need to have different prices and stocks from the main product. What database design would be best in this case? I started with something like this. Features id name Features Options id id_feature value Products id name price Products Features id id_product id_feature value ( save the value from the feature-options for ease in search ) configurable (yes, no) The problem is that now I am stuck on how to save the configurable product features. I was thinking of saving their value as a json. But that will make saving price modification for a certain option difficult. How would you go about this ? Thank you.

  I've got a string: (notice the spacing) eh oh 37 and I want it to become: eh oh 36 (so I want to keep the spacing) Using awk I don't find how to do it, so far I have: echo "eh oh 37" | awk '$3>=0&&$3<=99 {$3--} {print}' But this gives: eh oh 36 (the spacing characters where lost, because the field separator is ' ') Is there a way to ask awk something like "print the output using the exact same field separators as the input had"? Then I tried with sed, but got stuck after this: echo "eh oh 37" | sed -e 's/\([0-9][0-9]\)/.../' Can I do arithmetic from sed using a reference to the matching digits and have the output not modify the number of spacing characters? Note that it's related to my question concerning Emacs and how to apply this to some (big) Emacs region (using a replace region with Emacs's shell-command-on-region) but it's not an identical question: this one is specifically about how to "keep spaces" when working with awk/sed/etc.

I have this function that returns 1 if the number of black pixels is greater than treshold def checkBlackPixels( img, threshold ): width = img.width height = img.height nchannels = img.nChannels step = img.widthStep dimtot = width * height data = img.imageData black = 0 for i in range( 0, height ): for j in range( 0, width ): r = data[i*step + j*nchannels + 0] g = data[i*step + j*nchannels + 1] b = data[i*step + j*nchannels + 2] if r == 0 and g == 0 and b == 0: black = black + 1 if black >= threshold * dimtot: return 1 else: return 0 The loop (scan each pixel of a given image) works good when the input is an RGB image...but if the input is a single channel image I get this error: for j in range( width ): TypeError: Nested sequences should have 2 or 3 dimensions The input single channel image (called 'rg' in the next example) is taken from an RGB image called 'src' processed with cvSplit and then cvAbsDiff cvSplit( src, r, g, b, 'NULL' ) rg = cvCreateImage( cvGetSize(src), src.depth, 1 ) # R - G cvAbsDiff( r, g, rg ) I've also already noticed that the problem comes from the difference image got from cvSplit... • NSURLConnection on simulator and iphone performance issues

  I'm experiencing a weird problem and i wonder if anybody else has noticed this: I'm using NSURLConnection as it appears in apple's examples to get xml files from a certain server - pretty straight forward. And most of time it works, but sometimes it's just stuck after initialing and don't get into connection's delegate methods. I'm working with WiFi & 3G and the same server all the time. When it comes to didFailWithError i see that mostly it was a timeout error. When I enter same link in Safari it takes a second to bring data. And after another trial I can access the link. What might be the reason for such a weird behavior? How can I improve it? What is the role of cache policy with NSURLConnection? Thanks, Nava

• git- how to troubleshoot "cannot find command"

  I need help getting git extensions to run with msysgit. I have had bad luck with extensions git-tfs and git-fetchall, in both cases it is the same problem. The addon will require a file to be placed where git can find it (git-tfs.exe and git-fetchall.sh). I understand this to mean the files need to be in a directory that is in the 'PATH' environment variable. In both cases I get stuck at this point: $ git-diffall bash: git-diffall: command not found When I run echo %PATH% from a regular command shell, it shows my path variable includes the directories where git-diffall and git-tfs are. How can I debug this, or am I missing something? Is there a way within msysgit to verify the command search path is what I expect?

  I have a list of arrays and I would like to get the cartesian product of the elements in the arrays. I will use an example to make this more concrete... itertools.product seems to do the trick but I am stuck in a little detail. arrays = [(-1,+1), (-2,+2), (-3,+3)]; If I do cp = list(itertools.product(arrays)); I get cp = cp0 = [((-1, 1),), ((-2, 2),), ((-3, 3),)] But what I want to get is cp1 = [(-1,-2,-3), (-1,-2,+3), (-1,+2,-3), (-1,+2,+3), ..., (+1,+2,-3), (+1,+2,+3)]. I have tried a few different things: cp = list(itertools.product(itertools.islice(arrays, len(arrays)))); cp = list(itertools.product(iter(arrays, len(arrays)))); They all gave me cp0 instead of cp1. • Renaming and Moving Files in Bash or Perl

  HI, I'm completely new to Bash and StackOverflow. I need to move a set of files (all contained in the same folder) to a target folder where files with the same name could already exist. In case a specific file exists, I need to rename the file before moving it, by appending for example an incremental integer to the file name. The extensions should be preserved (in other words, that appended incremental integer should go before the extension). The file names could contain dots in the middle. Originally, I was thinking about comparing the two folders to have a list of the existing files (I did this with "comm"), but then I got a bit stuck. I think I'm just trying to do things in the most complicated possible way. Any hint to do this in the "bash way"? It's OK if it is done in a script other than bash script.

  Hello, I wanna read feed entries and I'm just stuck now. Take this for example : http://stackoverflow.com/feeds/question/2084883 lets say I wanna read all the summary node value inside each entry node in document. How do I do that? I've changed many variations of code this one is closest to what I want to achieve I think : Element entryPoint = document.getRootElement(); Element elem; for(Iterator iter = entryPoint.elements().iterator(); iter.hasNext();){ elem = (Element)iter.next(); System.out.println(elem.getName()); } It goes trough all nodes in xml file and writes their name. Now what I wanted to do next is if(elem.getName() == "entry") to get only the entry nodes, how do I get elements of the entry nodes, and how to get let say summary and its value? tnx

  Hi, I'm new to windows services and... you guessed it, I’m a bit stuck. Let me paint the picture – I’m running a timed service that use an OdbcDataReader and SqlBulkCopy to (1) archive the data (2) normalize the data on a SQL box. When I run this code in a windows form proj. it works fine. Then, when I change the DNS’s Data Directory Path to a local drive, instead of the network share (just simulated the environment locally), it works as well. I’m obviously missing something. • Best way to show code snippets in word?

  Does anyone know a good way to display code in Microsoft Word documents? I have tried to include code as regular text which looks awful and gets in the way when editing regular text. I have also tried inserting objects, a WordPad document and Text Box, into the document then putting the code inside those objects. The code looks much better and is easier to avoid while editing the rest of the text. However, these objects can only span one page which makes editing a nightmare when several pages of code need to be added. Lastly, I know that there are much better editors/formats that have no problem handling this but I am stuck working with MS word.
