• How can I choose between Linux and Windows hosting?

  I am a relative beginner when it comes to choosing web servers and hosting plans. I'm about to signup for a hosting plan with GoDaddy. My main requirement is ColdFusion and MySQL. The plans on offer include Linux and Windows based plans. Which one should I choose, and why? I don't have a lot of requirements other than what I mentioned above. I never used Linux before but I doubt I'll ever need to do anything beyond tampering with my account. What are the main advantages of one over the other?

• Simple CMS for clients?

  I'm looking for something fairly simple for clients to use and very easy for me to skin (somewhat complicated themes). something like Perch or Couchcms, but has to be open source to satisfy some license requirements.. I can't really seem to find any CMS that is like this {Wordpress, drupal etc are way too heavy for this use} , really appreciated There aren't much requirements, anything will really work - each site gets their own jailed instance and stuff, just PHP/MySQL

• How to display/add play button on youtube image ?

  Hi all I am working in one project in wordpress environment and I have the opportunity to work with youtube video, fancybox etc. I have embedded the youtube image from youtube server which is "http://img.youtube.com/vi/0.jpg", now there is no play button shows up on middle of the image as we see usually any youtube videos! • Are you aware of any client-side malware that sends lots of junk requests for .gifs?

  I am getting dozens of 404 errors on my site that are requests for gif's with apparently random names, like 4273uaqa.gif and 5pwowlag.gif. I see that most of them are coming from one user. I assume something is happening in the background on her machine without her knowledge -- a malware thing on the client. Have you seen this behavior before, and do you know what sort of malware might cause it? Would love to advise my customer that s/he has an issue. I'd also like to stop getting these 404 reports. • Trouble with my website and IE7

  Hi there, sorry im new here but i have a serious problem; I changed the CSS style sheet for IE7 for my site http://bumblebbids.com , but now when using IE7 it has no graphics and all of the scripts code is printed ; I have tried replacing the original stylesheet but it made no difference, so please suggest ways that i can fix this? If not, would it be possible to have a 'Incompatible browser' message that only appears for IE7 users? Thanks

  I have the following table in my Dashboard: Page path level 1 Visits Goal Completions ----------------- ------ ---------------- /sub1/ 994 1,295 / 102 3 /sub2/ 10 1 I know my conversion rate is 10-20%, and that actually in this period I only had 183 goal completions under /sub1/. My goal is set as a regular expression for a particular page (/success?.*), and I have a funnel set up which tracks the page before the goal (/action). The actual urls hit would be /sub1/action then /sub1/success?1234 and /sub2/action then /sub2/success?1234. Why is my table in my dashboard giving me wildly wrong numbers? Have I done something wrong?

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Update - Because this is someone else's code, I just realised that they have some sort of spam protection already, so we are trying to disable comments now.   Ive come into a bit of an issue lately regarding shopping cart software, and i would like some recommendations. I have been an OsCommerce developer for years now, and im finding alot of my clients are wanting updated looking backends ... OSC is fantastic, but the fact that its not being updated anymore and that its clunky and table based is taking up quite a bit of my time. I have built a few sites on Magento, and although it gives quite a good backend, it is the slowest shopping cart i have ever come across in my time, that and the fact that modifying it takes years, has convinced me not to use that again. So, i like any input as to what people are finding good in todays open source shopping cart software.

• Help me make a cronjob/screen command please?

  Hi guys I want to set up a cronjob on reboot to do this cd /home/admin/vivalaminecraft.com && screen -d -m -S mcscreen && mono McMyAdmin.exe The issue is when I execute this it seems to create the screen but doesn't do the mono McMyAdmin.exe in the screen... Is there like a then command ? so it does 1. then 2. then 3. ? Could someone please help out :) So I tried this: so I did this: @reboot screen -dmS minecraft @reboot cd /home/admin/vivalaminecraft.com @reboot mono McMyAdmin.exe It still doesn't work. The screen is created but it doesn't have the mono execution in it I put this in it #!/bin/bash screen -dmS minecraft; cd /home/admin/vivalaminecraft.com; mono McMyAdmin.exe; is this correct?

• PHP not working with hosting

  I have been playing with a php CMS site for someone that I am ready to deploy but am running into a couple problems that I assume to be hosting related. I have been developing and playing with it localy and deploying to a hosting environment friendly towards this specific CMS (joomla). I have recently been trying to deploy to a client's hosting and have been running in to some trouble. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been in contact with the clients hosting and have had them set up a mysql DB for me and enable php. Simple php was working but joomla was not able to create the config files it needed to run on this hosting. Therefore I havnt been able to successfully deploy my work. While playing around with some simple php pages I have started getting http 500 errors and now cant seem to get anywhere. This is a smaller hosting company that seems willing to work with me but I dont really know what i need to ask from them to get me working. My questions to you webmaster geniuses would be as follows: Given the situation I have described, is there anything specifically i should do to get my joomla/php site running on this hosting? What specifically should I ask my current hosting providers to do to help me get working? Thanks

• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! • I can see traffic coming from google ads, even though I don't have any google ads running, how is that possible?

• What dangers await if I block non-standard, non-major-usa search engine bots from my USA only website?

• Grapeshot crawler ignoring robots.txt

  Has anyone come across a crawler called Grapeshot? They are hammering the same page repeatedly on our website. I believe they are looking for ad related keywords, based on previous content ad campaigns. The odd thing is we never ran any such campaigns on the page they are so interested in. We do have only a few pages running AdSense, is this what has attracted Grapeshot? I've added the following declaration to my robots.txt, but they don't seem to be honouring it? User-agent: grapeshot Disallow: / Any ideas on how to block this nuisance crawler? I'm starting to think the best way is by setting up IP rules in IIS?

• Keep Google Analytics in a backup site or not?

  I backed up my website and uploaded it to another server for testing and backup purposes. Should I remove the Google Analytics snippet from the index.php (which is for the real site), or does it not matter as it's not the same server and url address as the one declared at Google Analytics account? The reason I don't want to remove it is in case someone forgets about it if they upload the backup to the real site in case the real one breaks. Also I know that if I turn off the website there is no GA snippet, but I need it open so I can easily access and test it so I don't have to write pass all the time.

• SEO domain name advice

  I'm starting a website, that is meant for a non-English region, using an alphabet that is a bit different than that of English. Current plan is as follows. The website name, and the domain name, will be in the local language (not English); however, domain name will be spelled in the English alphabet, while the website's title will be the same word(s), but spelled properly with accents. E.g.: 'www.litterat.fr' and 'Littérat'. Does the difference between domain name and website name character use influence the site's SEO? Is it better, SEO-wise, to choose a name that can be spelled the same way in the English alphabet? From my experience, when searching online, invariably, the English alphabet is used, no matter the language, so people will still be searching 'litterat' (without accents and such).

• Unable to print login-required images in IE

  I have some images in a section of a site that require the user to be logged in in order to view. These images are served by a PHP script, which checks the user's login state and if valid, serves the binary data with the appropriate headers. This all works fine. The issue comes when a user tries to print one of these images. In Internet Explorer, when they go to print preview they get the broken image box with a red cross in the corner instead of the actual file. This is what gets printed also. All other browsers can print the images without issue. I have some images elsewhere on the site that are also served via. PHP but these don't require a login. These print fine. The PHP-powered HTML pages on the site that require a login also print fine in IE. It's just login-required images. The user hitting print preview does not seem to result in additional HTTP request to the server for the file. However I do see an additional HTTP request a few seconds later that comes from the same IP (may or may not be related), This request includes no host header, no REQUEST_URI and no user agent. The 'please login' page sends an appropriate 403 header. I've also added a far-in-future expires header to the image response itself to ensure that browsers can serve/print the files from their own cache but this hasn't made any difference. Why can't IE print the images and what else can I do to investigate or fix the problem?

• Yandex frequently replaces page names with ampersands

  The Yandex spider is a frequent visitor to one of the sites I manage. On ocassion it replaces the page name with two ampersands and a space. So if the page is: /mypage.aspx?param=value then it will try and crawl it as: /&& ?param=value Any idea why it is doing this? [EDIT] If I remember correctly the IP that this "mistake" is coming from is based in California and not Russia. I believe that they crawl US sites from a US based IP address. Not sure if that helps.
