  • Reading HTTP server push streams with Python

    I'm playing around trying to write a client for a site which provides data as an HTTP stream (aka HTTP server push). However, urllib2.urlopen() grabs the stream in its current state and then closes the connection. I tried skipping urllib2 and using httplib directly, but this seems to have the same behaviour. Is there a way to get the stream to stay open, so it can be checked each program loop for new contents, rather than waiting for the whole thing to be redownloaded every few seconds, introducing lag?

    A question I got on my last interview: Design a function f, such that: f(f(n)) == -n Where n is a 32 bit signed integer; you can't use complex numbers arithmetic. If you can't design such a function for the whole range of numbers, design it for the largest range possible. Any ideas?

  • target="_top" emulation using JavaScript

    Suppose we have frameset of with 2 frames, one frame is kind a tiny horizontal header and second is kind of "content" frame with 3rd-party html page inside. When user clicks on some link inside "content" frame, the whole page (frameset) should be reloaded with this link, the same behavior if "content" frame has "target=_top" attribute. How to do this using JS?

  • How to mix mongodb and a traditional db in Rails?

    I am considering using MongoDB (mongo-mapper) for a portion of my rails application. I am not ready to go whole hog MongoDB because there are too many useful gems that depend on a traditional DB. That being said there are parts of my application that would be great to leverage a document database. Has anyone had success mixing the two approaches? How do you link activerecord models with mongomapper models? Thanks, Jonathan

    I wrote a quick and dirty function to compare file contents (BTW, I have already tested that they are of equal size): let eqFiles f1 f2 = let bytes1 = Seq.ofArray (File.ReadAllBytes f1) let bytes2 = Seq.ofArray (File.ReadAllBytes f2) let res = Seq.compareWith (fun x y -> (int x) - (int y)) bytes1 bytes2 res = 0 I'm not happy with reading the whole contents into an array. I'd rather have a lazy sequence of bytes, but I can't find the right API in F#.

  • Returning content directly from memcache - Django / HTTP Server

    Hi folks, I've built a web application with Django, I'm using Memcached in order to cache data. A few views cache the whole HttpResponse objects, therefore there might be a better alternative for returning the Memcached data other than going through Django. What could be faster alternatives for returning Memcached data on HTTP Requests ? I'm trying to make the operation as fast and lightweight as possible. Help would be much appreciated! :)

    I have a large file (hundreds of megs) that consists of filenames, one per line. I need to loop through the list of filenames, and fork off a process for each filename. I want a maximum of 8 forked processes at a time and I don't want to read the whole filename list into RAM at once. I'm not even sure where to begin, can anyone help me out?

  • Nice, clean, simple way of getting a dataset from ASP.NET to plain HTML jQuery or JavaScript library

    I know this is a probable open ended question, and I have tried looking around so much over the last year or two... maybe I am looking for a perfect place that doesn't exist! of course it's all about perception no less.. Anyway, just to clarify what I am trying to do and why: I want to be able to use (primarily for the moment) ASP.NET or services thereof to get a dataset - whatever the source data, I can obviously get a dataset of rows/Columns. I want to be able to, as simply as possible, get that data over to the client via xml/json/whatever, to then use in a "variety" of ways. "Variety" of ways meaning I would like to "easily" bind that data to say a grid, or a combo dropdown or just simply render to a textbox - BUT by referencing the dataset as I would say on the serverside. Now I know this all sounds simplistic, and I know there are lots of complications.. so I have tried the following so far over the last year or so: ExtJS - very good, nice solid framework, but just found it a bit too much to use in everyday basic apps - great if I was building a whole application with it Yahoo YUI - not looked recently, but I guess some of the concepts with ExtJS were similar? JQuery - of course to get data etc, it was ok, and I guess there are so many 3rd party plugins, that a mix and match might work? Adobe SPRY - ironically this was as close to getting a dataset style structure to Javascript/client, although it seemed to drop off/go quiet..? I maybe wrong.. I did have a very cursory play with Tibco GI and another one I cannot remember the name of! but again, it felt like it was great to build a whole app perhaps? Anyway, I am very amazed by all of the technologies coming out, and really not biased one way or the other, I really just want a very simple way of getting data from the server, and having a basic/very flexible way of working with that data in the client without using server technologies.. I need to keep the server flexible as I may need to use PHP, or java technologies not just .NET So again, sorry for the rambles, but if anyone out there has had a simple experience, or would like to share some ideas, it would be very welcomed!! Meaning it will push content down if it has to, or fill up any remaining space if the complete content is less then the view port.     I find Vim's undo to be a bit too coarse. E.g. if I type something like this: a // to go into edit mode to be or not to ve <esc> // to exit insert mode Oops! I made a typo. I want to start undoing so I press u, but then it clears the whole line. Is there a way to undo word-by-word or character-by-character?

    I'd like to run an app in a restricted private beta on heroku. We're changing the app regularly and haven't done a security audit. To stop anyone exploiting stuff, we'd like to lock down the whole site, so you need a password to access anything. Ideally similar to using .htaccess and .htpasswd files to lock an entire site on an Apache server. Is there a simple one shot way to do this for a heroku hosted app?

  • How to build a function on the fly in java?

    I'm parsing a text file that is being mapped to some java code like such: public void eval(Node arg) { if(arg.data.equals("rand")) { moveRandomly(); } else if(arg.data.equals("home")) { goHome(); }//snip.. This is going to need to be re-evaluated about a thousand times and I'd rather not have to traverse the whole thing every time. Is there any way to make this traversal once and then have it be a function that is called every other time?

  • Java force catch RuntimeException?

    Is it possible to force java to make you catch RuntimeExceptions? Specifically I am working with the Spring framework and the whole Exception hierarchy is based upon RuntimeExceptions. A lot of the times I forget to try and catch the Exceptions. A specific example is when doing an LDAP query, or an SQL call.
