• How do I make an external hard drive keep the same drive letter permanently?

  I have a desktop PC (2002 vintage) running Windows XP that I turn on about 2 or 3 times per week. I have a mains powered 250Gb Western Digital hard disk connected to it via USB. I always turn the hard disk on before the PC so it's up and running as the PC boots. When I first connected the external hard disk, the PC assigned it a letter ('i' if it matters) and I've installed software to it, created shortcuts to various files and folders on the disk using that letter. For years everything was fine then I would boot the PC and the hard disk was assigned a different letter. I'd then have to go into 'my computer/manage/disk management' and manually change the letter back to 'i'. If I then rebooted the PC, the hard disk would usually still be 'i' but after the next reboot would be some other random letter and I have to manually change it back to 'i'. This would go on for some time then there'd be periods when the it would always be 'i' then, for no apparent reason (no new devices added, for example), the drive letter would start changing again. At the moment it's in random drive letter mood so I thought I'd ask the following question... How do I assign the external hard disk to be 'i' permanently? Answer: Thanks Molly that seems to have done the trick (after a little fiddling) - slightly disappointed there wasn't a way to do it within Windows without installing something else though. For anyone else trying this, it wasn't completely straightforward so here's what happened with me. I installed USBDLM as per the instructions on its website. I guessed that I had to assign the first USB letter to i so replaced the 'Letter1=' lines to 'Letter=I' in the ini file. To test it, I rebooted the PC only to find it came back up with the display set to 640x480 in 16 colours. After some investigation, I re-installed the display drivers and rebooted and set the display back to its usual setting. The external hard disk now gets set to 'i' but I found I had to re-apply sharing status to it so it was seen from my laptop which is on the same network. The end result of all this is that it now does what I wanted although it does act as though the hard drive has just been plugged in a few seconds after the Windows desktop appears i.e. the little box appears with a progress bar as it searches through the contents of the 'new' hard drive and I eventually get a dialogue box saying 'This disk or device contains more than one type of content. What do you want Windows to do?' and lists options such as play media files, print the pictures or open folder to view the files. This is a tiny pain I wish didn't happen but not exactly a huge price to pay. Other than that - it seems to work fine :) Looks like a spoke too soon... Every time I reboot, I have to re-share the 'i' drive (which I didn't have to do before) so it can be seen by my laptop on the same network. Any ideas how to make that permanent?

• Clients not updating with approved updates from WSUS

  Hi All, I've been a bit behind in my windows XP updates recently, and I have about 18 or so I need to roll out to all our users, according to WSUS. I'm trying it on a couple of test PCs, and so far i've had no luck. On each one, one update would install (and need a reboot), and nothing else since. • Upgrade using downloaded $40 to Win8 x64 to blank SSD using only retail 32Bit XP install CD

  Here is my situation. Purchase the downloadable $40 UPGRADE version of Windows 8. Install this upgrade to a new/blank SSD drive WITHOUT prior installation of retail version of XP/service pack 3 (prefered). I have the retail purchased 32Bit XP installation media and I also have a slipstreamed disc that contains service pack 2. This 32bit XP license was installed to a desktop PC that I have NOT used for years (its broke). Questions: Can I upgrade using the $40 download upgrade version from retail 32Bit XP to 64Bit Windows 8 directly to new SSD? without first installing 32bit XP to new SSD? If 32bit XP needs to be installed to perform the upgrade to 64bit Win 8 is service XP service pack 3 still available; likewise, if the boxed retail version of XP 32bit is required to be pre-installed to the new SSD before attempting the downoladed $40 upgrade to 64Bit Win, can a clean install be performed or is a undesired actual upgrade performed? From what I have read this is way to complicated. Ideally, I should be able to install $40 upgrade version Win 64bit directly to new/blank SSD, then during the license verification process enter both the Win8 64Bit upgrade key and retail XP 32bit key (over internet or phone call).   After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem.   My setup: I have a PC with a Gigabyte GA-MA78S2H motherboard (Realtek Gigabit wired Ethernet on-board). I have the latest drivers (at least the latest driver for the NIC. I'm connecting via an Edimax BR-6216Mg (again, wired connection). For some reason I experience short periodic disconnects and reconnects. Specifically, Skype disconnects, tries to connect, succeeds after a short while; incoming SFTP sessions get dropped; using a browser, I sometime get stuck in the DNS lookup or connection to the website and a page won't load. A couple of seconds later, a reload works. All this happens with Windows XP SP3. With Windows 7, it also happens. I installed another NIC, and tried switching to it - same effect with the on-board NIC. A while back I tried another router (although it was an Edimax model) - same problem. Connected the computer directly, with no router. Same problem. ping -t to the router (192.168.0.254) gives pongs, nothing is lost, and time is < 1 ms almost always (sometimes it says 1 or 2 ms). This is the case also during the disconnects.

• Windows using the DNS suffix search list on all lookups, even valid FQDNs. How to stop this?

  When doing DNS lookups (specifically using nslookup, for some reason most things are not effected) Windows XP Pro SP3 is using the DNS suffix search list for every single one. Even for fully qualified domain names. For example I lookup "www.microsoft.com" but windows actually asks for "www.microsoft.com.eondream.com" (eondream.com is my primary domain). Now I can fix the issue by removing the Primary DNS suffix, but it seems to me that the DNS suffix search list should be for short, invalid names (where dots=0 or something). I'm sure I have a misconfiguration somewhere in windows but I don't know where. I've changed every option I can think of or find. Below is the output of ipconfig /all and nslookup (with debug & db2 enabled). This is using a static IP & (internal) DNS server. • Cannot Change "Log on through Terminal Services" in Local Security Policy XP from Server 2008 GP

  This is a mixed AD environment, Server 2003 R2 and 2008 R2 I have a 2003 AD R2 and a 2008 R2 AD. GPO is usually managed from the 2008 R2 machine. I have a RD Gateway on another server as well. I setup the CAP and RAP to allow a normal user to log on to the departments workstation. I also adjusted the GPO for that OU to allow Log on trhough Remote Desktop Gateway for the user group. This worked on my windows 7 workstation. But unfortunately the policy is a different name in XP "allow log on through Terminal Services" I can get through right into the machine but when the log on actually happens to the local machine i get the "Cannot log on interactively" error. This is set in (for the local machine) Secpol.msc Local Security Policy "user rights assignment" but is controlled by the GPO in Computer Configuration Policies Security Settings Local Policies "User Rights Assignment" Do I simply need to adjust the same setting on the same GPO but with a server 2003 GP editor? Feel like that could cause issues... Looking for some direction. Or if anyone has run into this issue yet. UPDATE Should this work? support.microsoft.com/kb/186529 Still seems like I will have the issue as the actual GP settings for Log on through Terminal Services is still different between Server 2008 R2 and 2003 R2.... Another Thought: Should I delete the GPO made for the department and remake it with the 2003 R2 server? I have no 2008 specific settings as the whole department runs XP other than myself. If that's a solution I will move my computer out of the department as a solution... Thoughts?

• I Can Edit SD Card on Windows XP but Not on Windows 7

  I have an 8GB SDHC card which I have used to upload pictures onto my Windows XP machine using an SD card reader ("SanDisk Ultra II"). I could also delete pictures and create folders on the card. I recently obtained a new computer that runs Windows 7 and, while I can view and upload the photos, I am unable to delete photos or create folders. When I attempt to do either of these two operations, the desired option does not appear in the menu ("Delete"/"New Folder"). Also, the shortcut keys do not work (e.g. the Delete key and Alt+F+W+F). I have attempted to change the Properties from Read-only, but am greeted with a "media is write protected". I should add that when I insert the Card Reader back into my Windows XP computer, I am granted full write permissions. Why can't I modify the SD Card from Windows 7?   After rebooting my work PC (windows XP sp3) this Wednesday (thank to Microsoft Tuesday), I found that I can't remote desktop to my work PC from home (with VPN to company). I have been remote-desktop to work for years and I am really surprised since connectivity is not the problem, so I brought up wireshark to sniff the packets. I can see after TCP handshake, client sent X.224 Connection Request 03 00 00 13 0e e0 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 08 00 03 00 00 00 server sent X.224 Connection Confirm. 03 00 00 0b 06 d0 00 00 12 34 00 According to "MS-RDPBCGR", the official spec on RDP, the server should include Negotiation Response in the "Connection Confirm" message but it didn't. It's empty. I googled a lot but didn't find any clue on why server did that. By the way, I used the same remote desktop client and can connect to other windows XP PC. Here are a couple of pieces of information that may help to give a clue: Since TCP handshake (server port being 3389), I believe the svchost service is actually running. going to control panel -- system window, --- "Remote" tab, the remote desktop is indeeded checked and it states that my username is allowed. according to the packet capture, client didn't even get a chance to tell server what user was trying to logon. Yes, the progress bar showed up a few seconds and then it went back to the "Remote desktop Connection" window again. Searched "windowsupdate.log", didn't find any appearance of the word "remote".

  Since last few weeks I constantly get this error, as status bar balloon: Power Surge on Hub Port - A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. Due to this now I am unable to access any USB devices properly, they get disconnected intermittently. I did quite a few things to resolve this problem, firstly obviously through the Windows help. I even tried all the things told on the Microsoft website(which essentially says is to check and update the driver) but in vain. One suggestion, I found when I google'd was to disable the USB2 controller through the Device Manager and since at every startup the System configuration comes up complaining that it has been changed etc.(On that same site it is mentioned to ignore this message.) But after everything I still cant solve this problem. Any help is much appreciated. The system is installed with Windows XP service Pack 3 and all the updates till last month. Please let me know if any other hardware info is required. **UPDATE** My laptop is about 5 years old now, its an HP with Celeron 1.4G processor. Windows XP SP3 installed. All latest windows updates installed. 2 USB ports available. BIOS is HP 68DTD ver F.0A Do I need to update my BIOS from somewhere ? or is this a hardware problem altogether?

  Windows XP user-home edition 36 bit. One day I woke to see a blue pop up screen from Microsoft Windows XP Pro. I have not installed anything new myself. The 'add on' pop up always comes on when I open up mozilla to surf the net. I always just close it out to not install anything. I then woke to have colored tabs, the new download status bar at the bottom and this pop up window that asks me to retype two words spaced, a timer of two minutes starts and states if no word put in system will shut off. I have let it run down more than a few times and it does not shut down. No other options to choose from. If I misspell with a lot of letters it tells me I did so, but if I can't read a few letters I guess at it although it is not and it lets me resume what I am doing. This window pops up every single minute no matter what I am doing. Please help, I'm really annoyed with this. I have searched the net all over and don't quit know what to look for anymore

  The following situation: We have Windows XP Embedded clients that have all admin shares disabled and only have read-only shares (for security reasons). What we want to do is run remote shell (dos) commands on these machines. At first we looked at PsExec & BeyondExec applications (and all sorts of variants), but all of them rely on having at least an admin$ share, which are disabled on our systems. Telnet is not secure enough, as is RSHD servers. So we looked at the next obvious solution: and SSH server. We also prefer an open-source or freeware solution that is still maintained. I looked at freeSSH server for Windows, but that didn't run stable, I tried installing copSSH, WinSSH & openSSH for Windows, but none of these applications seem to work on Windows XP Embedded. The services can either not be installed or cannot be started. I don't know why. Some kind of dependency that is missing. So are there any other solutions out there? I don't care about having to an agent installation locally of some kind on each system, as long as the size of the software is small enough. Can someone suggest some alternatives to what I've already mentioned? Thank you very much.

  I'm trying to provide machines on a small LAN with read-only, anonymous access to files shared from a Windows 7 workstation (let's call it WIN7SVR). In particular, I don't want clients to have to deal with a login window when they navigate to, e.g., \\WIN7SVR in Windows Explorer, but we do not have a domain and synchronizing accounts between the server and clients would be intractable. There are both Windows 7 and Windows XP clients that need access to these shares. I got this working for Windows 7 clients by just enabling the Guest account on WIN7SVR and setting appropriate share permissions. Other Windows 7 machines automatically try logging in as Guest, it seems, so their users don't have to deal with the login window. The problem is with the XP clients--they can access the server if the user enters "Guest" in the login window, but I don't want users to have to do that. So from what I gather, in my limited understanding of Windows file sharing, this boils down to granting null sessions access to file shares on WIN7SVR. But I've had no success so far on that front. I've tried all the following in the local group policy editor on the Windows 7 server: Set Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users to Enabled Set Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares to Disabled Added the names of corresponding shares to Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously Added "ANONYMOUS LOGON" to Access this computer from the network under User Rights Assignment Any advice would be highly appreciated... I'm mostly a Unix guy, so I feel somewhat out of my league with Windows file sharing. I do understand that any sort of anonymous access to file shares isn't generally ideal from a security standpoint, but it's the most practical solution for us in this case, and access to our network is well enough controlled that share-level security isn't a concern.

  Hi - I have a max laptop running XP inside VirtualBox. The network is setup to be a "Bridged Adapter" so that the IPs for both the host & guest OS's are assigned by my wireless routed. My guest XP has Nortel VPN connecting to corporate lan. When this is connected, I want to allow my host Mac OS to access the corporate network. But I'm struggling. Without Nortel VPN running, I can change routing on the mac so all traffic is sent via the guest XP - this works. But once I activate the VPN, this no longer works. If I try to change the routing on mac to run through the IP address assigned to the Nortel adapter, I get a "Network is unreachable" error. Below is the output from ipconfig /all on the guest XP OS. I'm beginning to believe that what I want to do is not possible because of the way Nortel secure the VPN - but before I give up I thought I'd post the problem here. • Random keyboard malfunction - happens in Vista and XP

  For some weird reason, some of my keyboard keys of my deskop are acting very strangely. I don't remember a certain time when it started and I can't recognize any pattern as to when it happens and when it doesn't. The problem occurs in Windows XP, XP Safe Mode, Vista, and Vista Safe mode (I have a dual boot system) Here's what's happening: When I push the I, K, comma, or 8 keys (notice how they are all in the same column), instead of just getting that character, I get extra characters afterwards. For example, I'll push the k key and it will print "ksfda", pushing "I" gives me "IWREQ", comma gives me ", xvcz", pushing 8 gives me "82431". There are a couple things that I have noticed: It does not happen every time I push the key It happens in all OS and applications I have tested The characters coming after the desired ones are in the same pattern (column order: 2, 4, 3, 1 from the left of the keyboard in the same row as the key pressed. Pressing "]" will sometimes give me "]t", and if done in Notepad, will bring up the "Find" dialog window I cannot seem to remember a specific time the problem started, although I have been defragging, using TuneUp Utilities + CCleaner, and installing lots of new programs lately.

• Windows XP - Power surge on hub port

  Hi, Since last few weeks I constantly get this error, as status bar balloon: Power Surge on Hub Port - A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. Due to this now I am unable to access any USB devices properly, they get disconnected intermittently. I did quite a few things to resolve this problem, firstly obviously through the Windows help. I even tried all the things told on the Microsoft website(which essentially says is to check and update the driver) but in vain. One suggestion, I found when I google'd was to disable the USB2 controller through the Device Manager and since at every startup the System configuration comes up complaining that it has been changed etc.(On that same site it is mentioned to ignore this message.) But after everything I still cant solve this problem. Any help is much appreciated. The system is installed with Windows XP service Pack 3 and all the updates till last month. Please let me know if any other hardware info is required. **UPDATE** My laptop is about 5 years old now, its an HP with Celeron 1.4G processor. Windows XP SP3 installed. All latest windows updates installed. 2 USB ports available. BIOS is HP 68DTD ver F.0A Do I need to update my BIOS from somewhere ? or is this a hardware problem altogether?

• Remote Desktop connection to vista vs. xp

  I am trying to log into my work computer remotely. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop. I have created a vpn connection to the network, and I am doing a remote desktop connection directly to the ip of my box (192.168.xxx.yyy). If I do a remote connection to a different box, running xp, it goes into remote desktop mode immediately and I see the windows login dialog as I am used to seeing. If I try remoting to my box, which is running vista, I do not see the remote desktop mode, but an additional dialog on my local machine asking for my credentials. It defaults in my local username. It allows me to log in as a different user, but the domain it has is still my local domain, not my work domain, so none of my usernames or passwords work. There doesn't appear to be a way to change the domain. Trying to hit several more boxes, it appears to act differently on xp and vista target machines. I feel like this must be a configuration issue, but I am not sure what the problem is. Any idea on how I can connect?
