• Free tiered storage automation in linux?

  I have a couple virtualized fileservers running in QEMU/KVM on ProxmoxVE. The physical host has 4 storage tiers with significant performance variances. They're attached both locally and via NFS. These will be provided to the fileserver(s) as local disks, abstracted into pools, and handling multiple streams of data for the network. My aim is for this abstraction layer to intelligently pool the tiers. There's a similar post on the site here: Home-brew automatic tiered storage solutions with Linux? (Memory - SSD - HDD - remote storage) in which the accepted answer was a suggestion to abandon a linux solution for NexentaStor. I like the idea of running NexentaStor. It almost fits the bill. NexentaStor provides Hybrid Storage Pools, and I love the idea of checksumming. 16TB without incurring licensing fees is a huge plus as well. After the expense of the hardware, free is about all my budget can handle. I don't know if zfs pools are adaptive or dynamically allocated based on load, but it becomes irrelevant since NexentaStor doesn't support virtio network or block drivers, which is a must in my environment. Then I saw a commercial solution called SmartMove: http://www.enigmadata.com/smartmove.html And it looks like a step in the right direction, but I'm so broke I'd be wasting their time to even ask for a quote, so I'm looking for another option. I'm after a linux implementation that supports virtio drivers, and I'm at a loss as to which software is up to it.

  Can anyone let me know how I would reduce time between Last Check Time and Next Scheduled Check on a particular service. I have a very critical task to monitor and the time between checks is currently 5 minutes, which is too long for this service. Can I reduce that time? I need this to be 1 minute or even 30 seconds. I want Nagios to check this service every 30 seconds. • Clock time changed

  I'm using windows XP with Lotus Notes 6.5. Notice windows clock time is correct until I open lotus notes and my time clock changed forward. I corrected the time and it's ok but until I open Lotus Notes again and the problem comeback.

• Monitoring over Time with Nagios: How?

  Nagios in its standard usage monitors with point-in-time checks: either something is - or is not - true. Other tools like SGI's PCP, HP's MeasureWare, and SEC provide monitoring over time - monitoring things like average disk access time over the last five minutes, or other similar items. Is there anything like this for Nagios? I'm already running NDOUtils, which seems like a natural source for such data. I'd like to have something that would monitor and fire off alarms based on a time-based check using historical data. Is there anything like this for Nagios?

• How can I have 2 users working on the same PC at the same time

  I have a pc/machine that has its own ip address and it can be connected to by certain external PC's through our firewall. User A has a RDP connection from say Germany directly to the PC - his ip number is allowed through our firewall to connect to the PC. He now wants User B to connect at the same time so that User B can see what User A is doing on the screen at the same time and maybe take over the screen to put his input in. I know that you cannot have 2 RDP connections at the same time but what would be the easiest solution to this. I want User A to keep his RDP connection, but I am unsure of what to suggest so that User B can see what is going on at the same time. The Users are not happy to use Real VNC, etc.

  I've been looking (for the past 6-7 hours) for a fast, free and configurable SOCKS5 server. I haven't found anything that matches my needs. They are either too complicated, too bare-bones or simply buggy as hell. This is (all) I need: I want it to run on Linux (and also OS X, preferably) I want it to listen on localhost:8888 When my app (say wget.. or curl --socks5=localhost:8888) requests http://www.google.com/search?q=asd (or any other url - both http and https), I want it to fetch the page not from google's servers, but from http://localhost:4444/cached?uri=http://www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Dasd. Nothing more! I don't need caching, or anything else. I just want a SOCKS5 server, running locally, which redirects all queries to my own (local) server. It could be written in C, C++, Python, PHP, Perl, Node.js or any other language. I don't care, as long as it supports my (very limited) needs, or I can easily change the source to make it so. • Enforce user time restrictions to log out or off from Windows 7

  How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

• Scheduled Jobs during hours of autumn time change

  I'm wondering how other people deal with this scenario. What if you have a job scheduled to run at 1:30 am. In the autumn, when time changes, the hour of 1:00:00 to 1:59:59 repeats itself and so that job would run twice. Could be Windows Task Scheduler, SQL Agent or any other scheduling tool. Most of these tools seem to be based on machine time, not UTC time. If I told it to run the job at UTC time each night, then I wouldn't have the duplicate hour issue.

  Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. The databases have been restored, and SP2 for SQL2008 applied. I can see various hosts trying to establish a session, but the (customer) sites does not work and I don't see the expected established sessions. A wireshark reveals a full three-way handshake. Since it's customer machines connecting, I cannot logon to them and restart application pools.. What on earth could be causing this? • free up not used space on a qcow2-image-file on kvm/qemu

  we are using kvm/qemu with qcow2-images for our virtual machines. qcow2 has this nice feature where the image file only allocates the actually needed space by the virtual-machine. but how do i shrink back the image file, if the virtual machine's allocated space gets smaller? example: 1.) i create a new image with qcow2 format, size 100GB 2.) i use this image to install ubuntu. installation needs about 10 gb, the image-file grows up to about 10GB. nothing unexpected so far. 3.) i fill up the image with about 40 GB of additional data. the image-file grows up to 50GB. i am ok with that :-) 4.) this is where it gets strange: i delete all of the 40GB data on the image, but the image-size still eats up 50GB. question: how do i free up that 40GB of data and shrink the image to the only needed 10 GB? thanks in advance, berni

• Drupal 7: One-time user account

  I'm going to create a survey in Drupal 7 with the webform module, installed on a debian system which may be adapted in every way. The users (personally known, approx. 120) doing that survey will walk into a room and complete the survey in browsers on different computers. After that, they'll leave the room and other persons will enter, complete the survey on the same computers and so on. Each user may enter only one submission. The process needs to be anonymous, i. e. I mustn't have any idea of who did wich submission. My current solution is to generate random one-time-passwords and hand out one password per user (without noting who got which password). Within the survey there will be a password field where the one-time-password is entered. The value is checked by webform to be unique. I'll get the data via csv or Excel and verify the passwords manually in excel by comparing them to the list of valid passwords. The problem is: I don't like the idea of manually generating the password list, copying it to excel and doing a manual check. That's a good idea for one-time-use, but we're going to repeat the survey every once in a while. I'd rather generate one-time-logins (like user0001/fdlkjewf, user0002/dfrefnnr, ...) for each survey, hand them out to the users and let drupal/debian/whatever check whether a submission is valid or not. Do you have any idea how to batch-generate about 120 users with one-time-passwords in Drupal 7 and verify that each user may submit the form only once? Do you even have a better idea how to accomplish the task within the intranet? Thank you for your help.

• Fixed width, free, sans serif fonts

  I'm a dyslexic and i generally use arial for most things, since its probably the most readable font for me. However i'd like to have a fixed width font with similar charecteristics (sans serif, distinct, 'simple' characters etc) since some things break with non fixed width fonts, but at the same time, most of the 'standard' fonts are harder to read for me- any suggestions?

  Hi, I'm not an expert in writing shell scripts but also I'm looking for a very specific solution. OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I've a Java standalone which keeps writing (all System.out.println) to a log file. For some unknown reason, this Java standalone stops working at some point of time in my server and eventually logs writing also stops working. I want to have a script which checks the last modified date & time of the log file with current date & time in the server. If the time difference exceeds more than 5 minutes, I want to send an email immediately to my recipients list. This way I'll come to know when this Java standalone has stopped working. I'll move this script to crontab and make it run for every 1 minute, so that this whole process is automated. Log file location: /usr/local/logs/standalone.log

• Using a time to set XY chart axis scaling like in 2003

  In Excel 2003, when you created a XY chart using time as an axis, you could set the scaling of these axes by typing in the date. In Excel 2007, you have to use the decimal version of the time (eg. How many days since some arbitrary earlier date). I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to make such a calculation? A developer posted on a blog that this issue would be fixed in a future release, but all versions of Excel 2007 I have tried have not resolved this issue. The relevant quote: Those of you familiar with this technique of converting time to a decimal may recall that Excel 2003 allowed you to enter a date and time like “1/1/07 11:00 AM” directly in the axis option min/max fields and Excel would calculate the appropriate decimal representation. This currently does not work in Excel 2007 but will be fixed in a subsequent release.

• Will NTP work in an isolated network ( in absence of a reliable time source)

  Hi, I am investigatiing a typical NTP problem. The setup is as follows :- FreeBSD is being compiled and run on Opensolaris. The config file on OpenSolaris has entry of linux and another opensolaris machine as server and these server machines are syncing time with themselves (local clock) only. The server machines in this case have NTP running on them as well. Within a few minutes of starting the ntp daemon ,client starts syncing time with itself only and remains in that situation after that.All servers are discarded and no time syncing is done with them. My question is , is there any fundamental problem with this setup. Will the NTP work in such isloated network that has no direct or indirect connection with reliable internet time source ?

• Windows 2003-R2-Server: Process "System" takes large chunks of CPU time

  I have a domain controller running 2003 R2. The server behaves very well when restarted daily, however, each day it is not restarted, there's a process called "System" that takes enourmous chunks of CPU time (up to 95%). The server supports AD, WINS, DNS, has Kaspersky Endpoint Security running, and manages backups via Arcserve 15. When I tried so far: Process Explorer (ex-Sysinternals) shows that the "System" process has no sub-processes. In the "Threads" tab of the detailled view I can see that 90% of the CPU time is used up by "ntkrnlpa.exe+0x803c0". The "Interrupts" process is running at 3-5% of CPU time, I'm not sure if this accounts for the amount of CPU time that System takes.

• Proper Outlook Free/Busy status when working from home

  Our office (pretty large - about 200 people) has recently started part-time telecommuting. It's only one day/week now, but it's already raised some questions about availability, so I wanted to see how the users here, some of whom I'm sure telecommute to a corporate job, how they set their out of office status. Outlook has four statuses, and here's what I (and most others?) take them to mean: Free: I'm available for meetings Busy: I'm in a meeting or otherwise occupied, and unavailable Tentative: Shy away from scheduling over, but I'm available if needed Out of office: I'm on vacation and unavailable. However, I don't travel for work - do people tend to use this status to mean they're remote, but available for a phone call/bridge? As we begin to telecommute, I'll be available by phone for meetings, but not in person - any meeting can have a conference bridge, but some meetings just need to be in person. I'd like to send the right message about my status - people can schedule meetings with me on my telecommute days, but they should expect me to be on a conference bridge when they do. What status do people use? Does "Out of Office" correctly reflect that you're working from home, even though I perceive this to mean that somebody is on vacation? Maybe I'm the only one confused here, but as a company that's never before done telecommuting of any kind, I'm in the dark about standard practices. Thanks for the insight! • How to fix GMail time stamps in Outlook?

  One of my email accounts is hosted at an ISP with unreliable IMAP support, and I can't change it. Fortunately, I have my personal email set up on Google Apps for Domains, so I created another GMail account there and turned on GMail's features that allow me to send and receive mail through the ISP account using GMail ("Send mail as" and "Get mail from other accounts" in GMail settings on the Accounts tab). I'm now using Outlook to retreive mail from the GMail account through IMAP, which in turn is retreiving mail from the ISP account through POP3. This basically works great, except for one very significant issue: Prior to setting this up, I already had several months of mail in the ISP account that I had been accessing via IMAP. GMail grabbed all of this mail via POP3 at, let's say, noon on April 5. In GMail's web interface (and on my iPod touch, and in Mozilla Thunderbird), all is well: the messages are all shown with their original time stamps. But when Outlook downloads these messages from GMail via IMAP, the time stamps are all set to noon on April 5 (the time GMail downloaded them from the ISP via POP3). That's not good, especially since we're talking about hundreds of messages here over a time span of several months. How can I fix this and get Outlook to display the original time stamps?

  Is there any way to use Windows 8 with time in UTC in BIOS? I know there is a way to do it in Windows 7 (in this question: Does Windows 7 support UTC as BIOS time?), but this solution makes my system unbootable. Windows expects the bios clock to be set to local time by default. In Windows 7 and before, there was a registry hack to change this behavior so that it could expect UTC – is there an equivalent in Windows 8?

• Windows share mounted on Linux fails after some time

  I have a Windows share mounted on a Linux server (RHEL4) using a mount command like this: mount -t smbfs //server_ip/foldername /servername/foldername -o username=USERNAME,password=PASSWORD -o gid=users,dmask=777,fmask=777,rw,noatime It stays working for weeks at a time but sometimes stops working, at which time I unmount it and mount it again. This works but the share would have been unavailable for some time before I noticed it in log files. Is there some way that the share can be automatically remounted when it fails?
