  (guest reference added by Nancy) Anyone who has been working with Data import and exoport as well as the Essbase Excel Add In has probably come across a phenomenon that is called data precision: Lots of zeroes are added to any given number that has been calculated by Essbase, and this gets displayed as "10.0000000000001" or "9.99999999999999" instead of a simple "10" . • Tips for building an AI for a 2D racing game

  I have a school project to build an AI for a 2D racing game in which it will compete with several other AIs (no collision). We are given a black and white bitmap image of the racing track, we are allowed to choose basic stats for our car (handling, acceleration, max speed and brakes) after we receive the map. The AI connects to the game's server and gives to it several times a second numbers for the current acceleration and steering. The language I chose is C++, by the way. The questions are: What is the best strategy or algorithm (since I want to try and win)? I currently have in mind some ideas found on the net and one or two of my own, but I would like before I start to code that my perspective is one of the best. What good books are there on that matter? What sites should I refer to?

• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

  Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. • What are options for 3rd Party Centralized Software Settings Management?

  I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

• Can't ping external websites

  I can't ping google.com with my virtual ubuntu 12.04 server. I have set up a proxy URL in my /etc/apt/apt.conf file and it says Aquire::http::proxy http://urlname.com:9999; Now, I don't know a lot about how the proxy works, but I do know when we use it on windows VMachines it's a pac script that we place in internet explorer LAN settings and it automatically detects the script and gives internet access. I tried including the 9999/proxy.pac in the apt.conf URL and it didn't seem to work any better. Would ubuntu know how to handle a proxy.pac assuming it was created for windows? Should my URL include the .pac or just end after the port numbers? I've tried both without sucess, but I would like to know. A quick test to ping a fellow co-workers' PC was sucessful. So I can see network computers, but not google. or other internet sources.

• Where to find PHP version usage stats?

  My original question was: what percentage of sites are using php 5.4.x? (As it has some very interesting new features.) With secondary questions like how many of the cheap web hosting places have upgraded, which versions of the linux distros include it, etc. But I'm coming up blanks. http://php.net/usage.php stops at July 2007, and the nexen.net website seems to have stopped in 2008. At SecuritySpace they only list the web servers, not php versions. The TIOBE link isn't what I'm after (it doesn't -- and couldn't -- break down by version number. I thought php.net might show download numbers, but I cannot see them anywhere. I kind of answered the distro question, but it requires a lot of clicking around at distrowatch.com. E.g. I see here that Ubuntu offers php 5.4.6 in the latest snapshot, but the latest release (Ubuntu 12.04) has 5.3.10.

• Phantom activity on MySQL

  This is probably just my total lack of MySQL expertise, but is it typical to see lots of phantom activity on a MySQL instance via phpMyAdmin? I have a shared hosting plan through Lithium, and when I log in through the phpMyAdmin console and click on the 'Status' tab, it's showing crazy high numbers for queries. Within an hour of activating my account I had 1 million queries. At first I thought this was them setting things up, but the number is climbing constantly, averaging 170/second. I've got a support ticket in with Lithium, but I thought I'd ask here if this were a MySQL/shared host thing, because I had the same thing happen with a shared hosting plan through Joyent.

• MS Word Macro in visual Basic

  I have a Visual Basic system that in places runs word macros. I now need to have a MS Word Macro that I can search for a character and then extend the search to another character and extract the details into a vb variable from the first to the last character. Thereafter I need to search for the next occurrence of the first character and repeat the exercise. When all have been processed the last search must inform me that there are no more. • google earth 7, 32bit in 12.10 runs without error but there is no image (globe)

  Everything seemed to install fine. I can start google earth and all layers are available, I can even zoom in and look at 3-D buildings. But there is absolutely no image data displayed at all. If you look at the whole globe the outlines are there on an invisible globe. As you zoom in the base looks dark grey almost black but there is no image. I have tried.   I have a background as UI designer. And I realized that it is a bit hard for me to write a pieces of logic. Sometimes I get it right, but most of the time, I end up with something hacky (and it usually takes a lot of time). And is not that I don't like programming, in fact, I'm starting to like it as much as design. It's just that sometimes I think that I'm better at dealing with colors an shapes, rather than numbers and logic (but I want to change that). What I usually do is to search the solution on the Internet, copy the example, and insert it into my app (I know this is not a very good practice). I've heard that one tip was to write the logic in common English as comment before writing the actual code. What other tips and techniques I can use?

  I am currently tasked to write a software to help engineers design standard compliant designs. If there is a bad design, software will report an error or warning. Maybe it's just me, but anyone who has done this should be familiar with the massive amounts of ANSI standards tables like this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominal_Pipe_Size Computers are, as its name suggest, computing machines, not lookup machines. I feel that feeding formulas into computers and churning out standard compliant designs is much more efficient than doing memory intensive data lookups that are prone to human input errors and susceptible to "data updates". I actually think that there are formulas to calculate all those numbers, but nobody so far could give me that information. Anyone been through this before? What is THE best approach to this?   Given an array of positive integers in increasing order. Separate them in two series, an arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence. The given array is such that a solution do exist. The union of numbers of the two sequence must be the given array. Both series can have common elements i.e. series need not to be disjoint. The ratio of the geometric series can be fractional. Example: Given series : 2,4,6,8,10,12,25 AP: 2,4,6,8,10,12 GP: 4,10,25 I tried taking few examples but could not reach a general way. Even tried some graph implementation by introducing edges if they follow a particular sequence but could not reach solution.

• Handle all authentication logic in database or code?

  We're starting a new(ish) project at work that has been handed off to me. A lot of the database sided stuff has been fleshed out, including some stored procedures. One of the stored procedures, for example, handles creation of a new user. All of the data is validated in the stored procedure (for example, password must be at least 8 characters long, must contain numbers, etc) and other things, such as hashing the password, is done in the database as well. Is it normal/right for everything to be handled in the stored procedure instead of the application itself? It's nice that any application can use the stored procedure and have the same validation, but the application should have a standard framework/API function that solves the same problem. I also feel like it takes away the data from the application and is going to be harder to maintain/add new features to.

• Should I use float, double, or decimal for stats, position, etc?

  The problem with float and double is that they are not exact. If you are to do something like store replays, the values would have to be exact. The problems with decimal is that they are approximately 16x slower (confirmed by searching and personal testing) than floats and doubles. Couldn't Vector2s be another problem because they use floats internally for all the components? How do other games solve this problem? I'm sure they must use floats and doubles but aren't they not deterministic across platforms and different architecture? The replay files for games like SC2 run in a linear fashion so you cannot skip ahead so how do they solve the determinism issue with floating point numbers?

• Is it really a security problem to have non secure assets on an ssl page?

  My understanding is that this is just an example of being overly cautious, but if my checkout form contains an unsecure asset on it, that doesn't endanger anybody's credit card numbers from being caught by a man-in-the-middle. I'm asking this because every once in while, maybe because of cached content or whatnot, somebody writes in saying that they are seeing this "error" (even though there are no unsecure assets on my page), but they want an explanation. So yes, I can tell all about encryption and certificates and trust and men-in-the-middle. But what do I tell them about this. How do I convince them that the site is 100% safe (and if it isn't let me know that I'm mistaken!)
