• eCryptfs : How to keep the home mounted without being over ssh?

  I have a daemon program who need to read in a file who is saved somewhere in my home folder. But every time I close my ssh connection, this daemon can't read the file because it appear that eCryptfs unmount the home. Maybe there is an option to force eCryptfs to not only mount with an ssh connection ? I didn't found it. Thanks. PS : I know this thread, Why is ecryptfs only mounting private home directory over ssh?, but this is not the proper/good way to deal with the request.

• Crossbrowser issue - navigation-menu [closed]

  I'm having issues with crossbrowser compatibility on my navigationmenu for my site. The issue is that it's not working as expected in MSIE. It bugs out on mouseover. The site is run with wordpress and the theme is called GreenChilli. It's a free theme from MyThemeShop and they don't seam to be very active in resolving free theme issues on their forum. • Is How the Company Makes Its Money One of The Most Important Determining Factors in their work environment, culture, etc

  This is a viewpoint I've started to realize recently about some companies that I have worked for. They had their own software product that they developed in-house but most of the focus was on building an in-person sales team to push their product to businesses throughout the country. I figure that companies that are exclusively "online", meaning that their revenue source comes from online transactions where there is no "face" of the company to the customer would have a different work culture. Just curious if anyone has worked for both types of companies and notices a difference. I myself am hoping to get more into contract programming and figure that companies that don't have to employ a sales-force and things like that would be more focused on technology and maybe even willing to be flexible on partial telecommute, etc

• Why does my FPS drop gradually over time?

  I'm working on this game: yt alpha preview I came into a huge game-breaking problem - after 10-15 min of gameplay the FPS drops from 60 to 30 and is very unstable. I'm using tons of physics and particles, I'm deleting and nulling everything I can after it's supposed to be removed, I remove objects from vectors etc. The memory usage is stable at around 150mb so a leak is unlikely (or invisible?)- after a round ends and I delete everything, play a new round and performance is still terrible. I spent two days trying to figure this out and I just can't fix it. Maybe I'm missing something? I know it's hard to help with no code but I would just have to post my whole source.

• UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

• A proper file monitoring tool for Windows with notifications

  Developing in PHP, I'm usually confronted with various log files: apache, web apps, error logs etc. I'm currently using Notepad++ with the option to notify me when a file has changed. But when I need to monitor many files, I end up with too many tabs opened. I've used some of these, but they were lacking some basic stuff (like double clicking on the file to open it; oh, c'mon). What do you guys use for monitoring file changes? I needn't be "modern" or fancy. Just a simple "Hey, this file was changed. Here, click on it to open". (Maybe I'll end up making one myself, but I need to learn some more Java).

• Installing programs from a download

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.

• How to redirect a international domain to a subfolder on the English site without hurting Google rankings?

  I have two sites: www.example.de www.main.com www.main.com is English version of www.example.de which is in German. I want to keep only www.main.com. For the English version I will keep www.main.com, but for German I want to move it to www.main.com/de. I am wondering what would be best solution for old www.example.de: Redirect everything from www.example.de to www.main.com/de using 301 redirect? Redirect everything from www.example.de towww.main.com/de/page-url-of-old-size.html? So each link actually get own address. Is that necessary or will Google realize where the page belongs on new site even if I redirect everything to home page? Any other solution, maybe just set in Google webmaster tools the new domain or anything like that?

• Using T[1] instead of T for functions overloaded for T(&)[N]

  The asio::buffer function has (void*, size_t) and (PodType(&)[N]) overloads. I didn't want to write ugly C-style (&x, sizeof(x)) code, so I wrote this: SomePacket packet[1]; // SomePacket is POD read(socket, asio::buffer(packet)); foo = packet->foo; But that packet-> looks kinda weird - the packet is an array after all. (And packet[0]. doesn't look better.) Now, I think if it was a good idea to write such code. Maybe I should stick to unsafe C-style code with void* and sizeof?   Many times there is the need to load external resources into the program, may they be graphics, audio samples or text strings. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs? As in (for example, in a game): Graphics g = GraphicsLoader.load(CHAR01); Character c = new Character(..., g); ... c.draw(); Generally speaking which of these two is the more robust solution? • Should an image be able to resize itself in OOP?

  I'm writing an app that will have an Image entity, and I'm already having trouble deciding whose responsibility each task should be. First I have the Image class. It has a path, width, and other attributes. Then I created an ImageRepository class, for retrieving images with a single and tested method, eg: findAllImagesWithoutThumbnail(). But now I also need to be able to createThumbnail(). Who should deal with that? I was thinking about having an ImageManager class, which would be an app-specific class (there would also be a third party image manipulation reusable component of choice, I'm not reinventing the wheel). Or maybe it would be 0K to let the Image resize itself? Or let the ImageRepository and ImageManager be the same class? What do you think?

• Switching to an external display, when primary is broken

  I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything. Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display. Using Nvidia open source drivers. Things I've tried: Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually) Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto (nothing happened) Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck. Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.

  Next week I am getting my first job as a programmer in a well known company. I have worked in other companies before, but mostly in IT department. As you can understand, I am very determined to succeed in there. I have found some related articles in the Web, but I am not even sure they are written from developers. So I am asking you, to tell us about what will you do in another way if you could "reverse" the time, and what can I do to succeed. Of course "work hard" is one of them but what about book/article reading, certifications, good practises to make good impression to my team leader or whatever else you think would help? I know that it maybe fit better at wordplace.stackexchange.com, but this is a programmer oriented post and can only be answered by experienced programmers. Thank you.

• Is it the job of a developer to suggest IT requirements?

  I am the only developer working on a web application which is nearing to its end. Now we are looking into making it Live in maybe a couple of months time. This is a web application for a non IT company. Though they have their own internal IT team, they have asked me on what will be the hardware requirements for the live servers eg. RAM, 32 bit or 64 bit. Shouldn't the internal IT team be doing this or since I am the only person working on the project is it my resposiblity to let them know of the any specific hardware requiremnts which may impact the performance of the project? The reason I am asking this question is that, I have not this before. All the times I used to be given a server and asked to deploy apps on it. I never used to worry about the server configuration etc.

• I can't login to facebook from any browser

  I'm Using UBUNTU 12.04. I'm having problems with Facebook. It really hard to login. Takes like 3 or 5 min. At first I thought it was a flash problem but then I realized it could be some proxy's conf file. Other sites doesn't have problems. Yesterday I tried Tor-browser-bundle and I installed privoxy using this rules http://www.neilvandyke.org/privoxy-rules/ . Today I removed privoxy and the conf file with the Ubuntu software center and ubuntu-tweak. I don't really find the problem and my windows pc does not have any problem with the same modem. I don't have an ISP'S PROXY it just a direct Internet connection using automatic DHCP. Maybe I am missing something else. But I want to be sure so, I'm asking. PD: Sorry for my English I'm Argentinian.

• Ubuntu thinks I have two displays

  When I first installed Ubuntu I noticed that my mouse would flicker a lot, which caused me to investigate. I remembered back when I ran Fedora I had an issue where it thought I had two displays (hp-dv7 4285dx laptop). In Fedora, this didn't cause any issues. In Ubuntu, it causes the mouse the flicker a lot. The fix I've been using is to just go into settings displays and disable the display that doesn't actually exist. The only problem is that this is not permanent. Each time I start up Ubuntu, I have to go back in and disable this display. They're each just titled "Built-in Display", and have the same resolution. My laptop does have two graphics cards: one on-board and one dedicated. I'm not sure if maybe that is causing is an issue? Any guidance towards this would be great. Thanks!

• SQL Why is prefixing column names considered bad practice?

  According to a popular SO post is it considered a bad practice to prefix table names. At my company every column is prefixed by a table name. This is difficult for me to read. I'm not sure the reason, but this naming is actually the company standard. I can't stand the naming convention, but I have no documentation to back up my reasoning. All I know is that reading AdventureWorks is much simpler. In this our company DB you will see a table, Person and it might have column name: Person_First_Name or maybe even Person_Person_First_Name (don't ask me why you see person 2x) Why is it considered a bad practice to pre-fix column names? Are underscores considered evil in SQL as well? Note: I own Pro SQL Server 2008 - Relation Database design and implementation. References to that book are welcome.

• How to manage the images for my Desktop Application

  What's the better way to manage the image files of my app? i've been thinking about the way that i do right now (save the image as a BLOB IN db), and i ask myself if would be better to manage the image as text in my DB, i mean, convert the image to hex(length of 500), then save in the db as text, and when calling it convert it from hex to image, or something like that, but what do you consider as an Experienced Progammer that is the better way?   Not long ago I started to use Ubuntu. When I was on Windows I used Notepad++. I was very surprised when I found that Notepad++ is only for Windows. So I installed Netbeans. Netbeans is a powerful IDE and in general I like it, except default styles. Maybe are there style profiles (i.e. plugins or other forms)? For example, the logging sybsystem: Option 1: All in one package, named to sort nicely Log - static accessor LogMonitor - interface for log minotor LogMonitorBase - abstract class LogMonitorStdout - print log to console LogWriter - interface for file logger LogWriterSimple - log writer with just one log file LogWriterArchiving - log writer that handles old log files Option 2: Subpackages for Monitors and Writers, with better names Log monitors/LogMonitor monitors/BaseMonitor monitors/StdoutMonitor writers/LogWriter writers/SimpleLog writers/ArchivingLog The second maybe looks better, but perhaps it's not so practical from the java point of view (two extra packages). What do you suggest as the best practice here? A lot in one package, grouped by naming prefixes, or a lot of subpackages with better names?

• How to set up dual wired and wireless connections?

  My laptop has both wireless and a wired connection capabilities. Can I connect to a router A using wireless and a separate router B using wired ethernet at the same time without having to switch back and forth? Thanks for replying so quickly. I wish to connect to two separate networks. The wireless connection is to router A which is connected to broadband internet. The wired connection is to router B which I wish to share files and a printer on 1 or 2 other desktops also using wired connections on B and maybe using synergy to have only one keyboard and mouse for 2 desktops. The wireless laptop is the only one required to have internet access.

• Does an inventory limit in an MMORPG make sense?

  I am currently developing a simple 2d MMORPG. My current focus is the inventory system. I am currently wondering if I should implement a limit on what a player character can carry. Either in form of a maximum weight, a limited number of inventory slots, or a combination of both. Almost every MMORPG I ever played limits inventory space. But plausibility aside, is this really necessary from a gameplay point of view? Maybe it would in fact improve the game experience when I just let the players carry as much stuff as they want. tl;dr: What is the game development rationale behind limiting carrying capacity of player characters?

  I'm not trying to say I know something everyone else doesn't but I've been solving more and more designs with the use of nested classes, so I'm curious to get a feeling for the acceptablilty of using this seemingly rarely used design mechanism. This leads me to the question: am I going down an inherintly bad path for reasons I'll discover when they come back to bite me, or are nested classes maybe something that are underrated?
