• Random touchpad and keyboard freezes on new 10.10 installation

  My touchpad and keyboard freeze up on my newly installed Ubuntu 10.10. I was using Ubuntu 10.4 via wubi before on this Laptop where this problem never occurred. (I did not migrate wubi or upgrade to 10.10, it's a fresh start. 64-bit on Dell Studio, plenty of RAM, plenty of free space on partition etc.) I can't say there is a pattern yet, once it happened during the download of packages with the Update Manager, once it was just using Firefox, no other program running. I was forced to shut down manually. In between these crashes the laptop was booted once, updates were installed etc., firefox was used and there weren't any problems. Both crashes should be in the attached kern.log and I noticed there were some error problems before the last crash (at the end, obviously). It seems the wireless was experiencing problems. • Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

  :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

• Which iPhone ad API has produced the highest revenue for you?

  This isn't a technical question, but more of a request for advice and empirical/anecdotal data. I'm nearly done writing a free app for iPhone, and I'm at the stage where I'm going to put ads into the app. I've had mixed success in the past with iAd (their fill rates have been atrocious recently, and their payouts have cut by about 75% over the past 4 months or so), and would like to know how much ad revenue you, the community, has seen from the various ad APIs you've used for your iPhone apps. This isn't a request for opinion, i.e. which is 'better', only what kinds of numbers you're seeing. I don't need absolute figures, but 'iAd pays x% higher than AdMob, and y% lower than AdSense' would be extremely helpful to me as I make my decision as to which ad API to integrate into my App. Also, have you had any experience or success with integrating multiple ad APIs into the same app? That's something I'm considering doing in my current iAd-filled apps (particularly my iPad app, which has yet to receive a single impression after nearly 60,000 requests)... something like: 1) Request-from-iAd 2) if that fails, request-from-adSense 3) if that fails, request-from-adMob 4) if that fails, ... etc.

• How can one-handed work in Ubuntu be eased?

  My right hand is temporarily immobilized and I would like to do some minor general work on my computer. Mostly web browsing, mailing and file and directory browsing and editing. For this I currently use Firefox, Thunderbird, Nautilus and the GNOME terminal (I have already asked a specific question about Emacs). Are there ways to ease such, or any other general, one-handed work in Ubuntu? I have found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391805/how-can-i-remain-productive-with-one-hand-completely-immobilized but that is not exactly what I am asking for. I want to ease whatever little time spent one-handed in Ubuntu and this is also interesting for situations where there is no injury involved, such as when one hand is occupied. I do realize I should avoid unnecessary strain. The main thing that is much slower one-handed is writing. Since I am only temporarily immobilized it seems to make no sense learn a new keyboard layout. I would be surprised if I managed to learn and become more effective with a new keyboard layout (than one-handed QWERTY) before I can use my other hand again. What I have already found: Sticky keys for making it easier to enter keyboard commands. When writing one-handed there are more cases of where it is useful to paste in phrases rather than to reenter them. It is easier to use Super+S rather than CtrlAlt+arrow keys to switch work space.

• Long 'Wait' Time for three php/CSS files. Is something blocking them?

  I have been speed optimizing a Wordpress site to little effect. There are three files CSS-related php files from the Wordpress theme that are delaying page loads on the site. One of the three files is basically one line of custom CSS from the custom CSS feature in the theme. You can see what I am talking about with this Pingdom speed test: The yellow is 'Wait'. There are no slow items in the cut-off portion of the image. The full results are here: Pingdom Results Page 1. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? I understand that I have blocking CSS or JS files, but I don't see anything that would be causing that long of a wait. When I ran the P3 Plugin Profiler, Wordpress and all plugins appeared fine -- it is the theme that is taking all the time. GTmetrix recommends avoiding dynamic queries. I assume all the ver=3.61 references are to the version of Wordpress (which I am using). I noticed that my Wordpress sites using other themes don't make this query (at least not over and over). 2. Is this typical coding practice? 3. How much negative impact do these query-strings have -- a little or a lot? I tried searching for similar questions here, please excuse me if I missed something. Sometimes, I know just enough to be dangerous.

• Differentiating between user script input formats

  I have a .NET project at work that provides a couple of (Iron)Python scripts to the customers, to allow them to customize the output of the program. The application generates code for certain machines, and supports a couple of different formats. Until recently, we only provided a script for one format. We're expanding upon that to include support for the others. If the user is using a script, they select their input script before generating the output code. A script designed for Format1 output is going to cause errors if they're trying to generate Format2 output. I need to deal with this. One option would just be to let the customers use common sense, and if they load the wrong script it will just fail, or worse, produce inaccurate data. I'm inclined to provide a little more protection than that. At the moment I'm considering putting a shebang-style comment line at the top of the script, ala: # OUTPUT - Format1 If the user tries to run a Format2 process with a Format1 script, it will warn them. Alternatively I could create different file extensions for the input scripts that vary by type. The file-type comment approach helps prevent the script from actually loading improperly, at the cost of failing to warn the user until they've already selected it, via a dialog box. Using different file extensions would allow me to cut down on visual clutter when providing a File Dialog, but doesn't actually stop them from loading the wrong script. So I'm really not sure if the right approach is to just leave it alone, or provide some safeguards.

• Boot process enter an infinite loop after installing Ubuntu 11.04 together with Windos 7 and XP

  I have a new computer ACER Aspire X3960 which came with Widows 7 preinstalled. I made a new partition where I installed Windows XP and then I installed in new logical partitions (a Swap, a / and a /home partition) Ubuntu 11.04. At the end of the process, the computer enters the very first screen where it says "press DEL to enter BIOS setup, press F12 to enter BOOT options". After a few seconds, the screen goes blank, the computer beeps and then it presents the same screen again. It doesn't even ever go to the grub options of which operating system I want to start. It just loops there forever. I tried to fix the (eventually damaged) grub following these instructions (unfortunately in german) http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/Reparatur from a LiveUSB, which I'm also using to post this question. • Downclock CPU reaching critical temperature

  I have an HP tx1250 laptop. It always had serious overheating problems and although usually it runs fine I'm now running a continuous test for my dissertation, this brings the CPU temp close to the critical and from time to time the computer shutdown for reaching it (checked the log). I use to have the same problem on Win XP but I noticed Win Vista and 7 downclock the CPU when is necessary to cool it down so I was thinking if the same is possible on Ubuntu 12. The only program I've found that may do the job is computer temp ( http://computertemp.berlios.de/ ) but it doesn't seems to work under Ubuntu 12. The inside of the laptop is fairly clean, the thermal paste is quite recent, I'm keeping it lifted from the desk and judjung by the sound of the fan that's running fine as well. The pc in now running between 78 and 91 degrees C but about once a day it shut down for reaching 95. I need the results of the test it's running pretty soon so it's important that it runs non-stop. I've though to set the maximum clock of the CPU to slightly less the maximum but then these tests I'm running would take much more time. Thanks! PS: first and last HP laptop for me.

• Making document storage in Sharepoint a breeze (leave the Web UI behind)

  Hey everyone, I know many of us regularly use Sharepoint for document storage in order to make documents available to several people, have it version controlled, etc.  Doing this through the Web UI can be a real headache, especially when you have multiple documents you want to modify or upload, or when IE isn’t your default browser.  Luckily we can access the Sharepoint library like a regular network drive if we like. Open Sharepoint in Internet Explorer (other browsers don’t support the Open with Explorer functionality), navigate to wherever your documents are stored, choose the Library tab, and then click Open with Explorer. This will open the document storage in Explorer and you can interact with the documents just like they were on any other network drive J  This makes uploading large numbers of documents or directory structures super easy (a simple copy-paste), and modifying your files nice and easy. As an added bonus, you can drag and drop that location from the address bar in Explorer to the Favorites menu so that it’s always easily accessible and you can leave the Sharepoint Web UI behind completely for modifying your documents.  Just click on the new favorite to go straight to your documents.   You can even map this folder location as a network drive if you want to have it show up as another drive (e.g N: drive). • How do I stop video tearing? (Nvidia prop driver, non-compositing window manager)

  I have that problem which seemingly afflicts many using the proprietary Nvidia driver: Video tearing: fine horizontal lines (usually near the top of my display) when there is a lot of panning or action in the video. (Note: switching back to the default nouveau driver is not an option, as its seemingly nonexistent power-management drains my battery several times faster) I've tried Totem, Parole, and VLC, and tearing occurs with all of them. The best result has been to use X11 output in VLC, but there is still tearing with relatively moderate action. Hardware: MacBook Air 3,2 -- which has an Nvidia GeForce 320M. There are two common fixes for tearing with Nvidia prop drivers: Turn off compositing, since Nvidia proprietary drivers don't usually play nice with compositing window managers on Linux (Compiz is an exception I'm aware of). But I use an extremely lightweight window manager (Awesome window manager) which is not even capable of compositing (or any cool effects). I also have this problem in Xfce, where I have compositing disabled. Enabling sync to VBlank. To enable this, I set the option in nvidia-settings and then autostart it as nvidia-settings -l with my other autostart programs. This seems to work, because when I run glxgears, I get: $ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.500 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.992 FPS And when I check the refresh rate using nvidia-settings: $ nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate Attribute 'RefreshRate' (wampum:0.0; display device: DFP-2): 60.00 Hz. All this suggests sync to VBlank is enabled. As I understand it, this is precisely designed to stop tearing, and a lot of people's problem is even getting something like glxgears to output the correct info. • Summary of usage policies for website integration of various social media networks?

  To cut to the chase... I look at Twitter's usage policy and see limitations on what can and can't be done with their logo. I also see examples of websites that use icons that have been integrated with the look and feel of their own site. Given Twitter's policy, for example, it would appear that legal conversations/agreements would need to take place to do this, especially on a commercial site. I believe it is perfectly acceptable to have a plain text button that simply has the word "Tweet" on it, that has the same functionality. My question is if anyone can provide online (or other) references that attempt to summarize what can and can't be done when integrating various social networks into your own work? The answer I will mark as the correct one will be the one which provides the best resource(s) giving the best summaries of what can and can't be done with specific logos/icons, with a secondary factor being that a variety of social networking sites are addressed in your answer. Before people point to specific questions, I am looking for a well-rounded approach that considers a breadth of networks and considerations. Background: I would like to incorporate social media icons and functionality, but would like to consider what type of modifications can be done without needing to involve lawyers. For example, can I bring in a standard Facebook logo, but incorporate my site color into the logo? Would the answer differ if I maintained their color, but add in a few pixels of another color to transition? I am not saying I want to do this, but rather using it as an example.

• Grub menu not waiting despite of GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed along side of windows 7. The grub menu doesn't seem obey GRUB_TIMEOUT=10, I see the grub menu there for a split second and it immediately defaults to the first option. Grub menu worked fine when I first installed ubuntu. I am not able to pinpoint what exactly broke it(maybe some update?). I did resize my ubuntu partition using gparted but am not sure if that is what caused it. here are my settings from etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" How do I fix this? • Transformation?

  I started working at Oracle in 1997.  Since then, we (and most everyone) have been talking about transforming finance operations....but what does that mean exactly?  From my perspective, I thought it meant eliminate waste and menial tasks and giving your finance team more time to work on more strategic things.  That seems logical and simplistic, but how much progress have finance teams (and their IT departments) really made over the past fifteen years? I have yet to talk to a customer that doesn't have one amusing task that makes me chuckle.  Sometimes they still print hard copies of transactions to "file," or sometimes they print 700 pages of data to "analyze," or sometimes they cut and paste from one or more reports into a spreadsheet.  Upon hearing these things, my first question is always, "Why do you do that?" to which their response is rarely the same.    Sometimes it's related to trust (both the employee and the system).  Sometimes, it's habit-based.  And sometimes it is just impossible to accomplish the end result without some manual effort. I will say that I used to print nearly everything that I needed to review.  Partly, because I liked having the ability to scribble notes on the paper, and partly, because it was uncomfortable to read online.  However, I have changed. Rarely do I print anything anymore.  It's easier for me to read and notate online, and well, I guess I've just changed my habits. So where do you think our resistance to change comes from?  Is it truly deficits in our systems, or is it our own personal resistance to change?  What's your most annoying & untransformed task?

  I have this sam e question on StackOverflow and I was advised to ask it here hoping for more information. Here is the question: I am in rather unfavorable situation. I have aspdotneststore front e-commerce application and search addon called VibeTrib. I dont have source code for both of those. Store that runs on StoreFront and VibeTrib has close to 250k products. Also we have lots of filters. I spoke to ViTrib reps, and they want extra money so they could optimize Queries that they use. Money they require is nto a big deal, but the problem is I dont trust them anymore. What we got is much different then wha is being advertised. To cut the long story short. I am runing the store on Amazon AWS now, and regardless of what DB (MsSQL 2012) server I set (I tried 32GB RAM monsters instances) it is slow. Ajax search uses Full Text search and it displays search keywords relatively fast, but once the search is performed ( to display all results) it is still slow.!!! There is something that I could to do accelerate the speed on my own end? I do have full control over EC2 Instance (Web server Server 2012 and IIS 8). Can I set IIS to step in for the search and cache some of it? I was hoping to cache at least some most common words. My best bet is IIS 8 :) Is there any help in my case? Thanks

• ATI HD5450 w/ Ubuntu 14?

  So, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 right now. Last night I realised that I'm way behind as we're up to 14! Decided to run the updater and figured I'd take the path of least resistance (but lengthy choice) of going 12.04 - 12.10 - 13.xx - 14.xx. So I download the first packet and then get an error message about my graphics card perhaps not working in 12.10. Now part of the reason I was looking to upgrade is because I get (and have always had) this strange occasional flickering - now that I have two screens it's just on the second monitor.....oddly this is not the same port that was giving issues before). The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5450 and I have the Catalyst (I think it's 13 or 14) driver installed - last night. It could be that the graphics card has never worked properly...I bought the PC new and with an "upgraded" video card and it's always suffered with this flicker. I just figured that the drivers weren't right or something. So I have 3 questions: 1) is my video card broken or is the driver letting it down and causing the flicker? 2) will it be able to handle the upgrade to 14 via 13? Or should I cut my losses and get something newer? 3) if I should get something newer....what should I get ( Thanks in advance....

• Identifying elements from data feeds generated by affiliate sites

  I am working with data feeds from affiliate sites. The basic idea is to provide an interface where the user can paste a link to an XML datafeed (these are huge btw, around 60 mb) that would then be streamed, parsed into small chunks, and mined for the required data which would then be stored in the database. The problem is that different affiliate sites have different Schemas for their XML's. It is a little hard mapping the elements in an XML to your database attributes when you don't actually know which element contains what. My Solution: Use XPath to traverse through the first set of parent and it's descendent's, fetch the elements as well as the data and and ask the user to map this data to the attributes in the database by selecting from a set of radio buttons that represent the attributes from the database. This will be done just once for each new Feed, once the system know's what's what it will automatically upload the data from the XML to the database. Does this sound viable? Is there a better solution? I realize this leaves an uncomfortable opening for human error.. Thanks.

• Enable [command] key to register as something other than just [ctrl]?

  I'm running 10.04LTS inside VMWare Fusion on a Mac. The [command] key (aka [windows] on many keyboards) is almost always behaving as if it was [ctrl], even though I done anything explicit to request that behavior. In fact, in SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsOptionsAlt/Win key behavior, 'default' is chosen (rather than the 'Control is mapped to Win keys' option). If the [command]/[windows] key was recognized as anything else ('Super', 'Meta', 'Hyper'? I don't care as long as it's not 'Control'), then I could achieve my real goal (which happens to be enabling CMD-based cut/copy/paste in PyCharm, while leaving CTRL-X/etc available for emacs-like bindings). I think any solution which manages to make [command]-x appear as something other than [ctrl]-x in PreferencesKeyboard Shortcuts will probably do the trick.

• How to populate a private container for unit test?

  I have a class that defines a private (well, __container to be exact since it is python) container. I am using the information within said container as part of the logic of what the class does and have the ability to add/delete the elements of said container. For unit tests, I need to populate this container with some data. That date depends on the test done and thus putting it all in setUp() would be impractical and bloated -- plus it could add unwanted side effects. Since the data is private, I can only add things via the public interface of the object. This run codes that need not be run during a unit test and in some case is just a copy and paste from another test. Currently, I am mocking the whole container but somehow it does not feel that elegant a solution. Due to Python mocking frame work (mock), this requires the container to be public -- so I can use patch.dict(). I would rather keep that data private. What pattern can one use to still populate the containers without excising the public method so I have data to test with? Is there a way to do this with mock' patch.dict() that I missed?

I cannot obtain consistent positioning having world setup like this How to configure this in Bullet? Why the weird + size/2 requirement?

• Is there an alternative to the term "calling object"?

  Let's suppose you've got a class defined (in pseudocode): class Puppy { // ... string sound = "Rawr!"; void bark() { print(sound); } } And say, given a Puppy instance, you call it's bark() method: Puppy p; p.bark(); Notice how bark() uses the member variable sound. In many contexts, I've seen folks describe sound as the member variable of the "calling object." My question is, what's a better term to use than "calling object?" To me, the object is not doing any calling. We know that member functions are in a way just functions with an implicit this or self parameter. I've come up with "receiving object," or "message recipient," which makes sense if you're down with the "messaging" paradigm. Do any of you happy hackers have a term that you like to use? I feel it should mean "the object upon which a method is called" and TOUWAMIC just doesn't cut it.
