• Translating error messages from an external API?

  If I am localizing a piece of software that uses an external API, how should I handle error messages that originate in this API? I do not control the API, I only consume it. The error responses are not very structured: some contain error codes, some contain verbose details in the text, others almost nothing. Some errors can be fixed by the user (incorrect configuration), some are caused by the external service (server overload), some could be caused by a bug in my software (of course, this would be very unlikely...). I would like to provide a smooth experience to my end-users, so they know what went wrong and what they can do to fix it. What is the best strategy to use here? (This is a generalization of a question from the WordPress Stack Exchange. I thought it would be worth re-asking here, because it is not limited to WordPress plugins.)

• Facebook Comments Lost

  I am using Facebook comments on couple of my blogs at the moment and I just found that somehow magically all the previous comments made on posts are gone and are no longer being displayed. I'm using wordpress for all of these blogs and Facebook Comments for WordPress to manage all the facebook comments. But somehow they all disappeared all of a sudden. Another problem which I've been facing lately is that I can't seem to moderate the faceboook comments. When I go to http://developers.facebook.com/tools/comments where there should be a list of all the comments made on my sites (against the Applications that I've created just for the sake of comments), there is nothing there. This has been the thing from the starting, before the comments vanished on my site, today So technically, there are two issues to solve here.

• 301 redirects mirrored domain

  I'm redesigning a site for a friend on my localhost. His old site is an .asp based site and we're replacing it with a WordPress site on LAMP hosting. The old site sits on domain A and also has another domain, domain B parked on top of it mirroring it. Google has picked up domain B for most of his search engine results and yahoo and bing etc have picked up domain A. The plan is to 301 redirect the the old pages of his site on domain A to the new WordPress versions and park domain B on top of it like before. My question is, will this work, if not what would be a better way to approach it? We'd prefer not to lose any of the search engine listings in the redesign, and the search engines don't appear to have penalized him for duplicate content. Thanks very much in advance!

• Hide folder names or such?

  Okay, I have a cpanel account with unmetered everything (pay a bit per month), so I wanna host my forum on it etc I have the domains as lets say money.com wordpress.com forum.com As I'll have to put everything in different folders for instance money will be in /m/ wordpress /w/ and forum in /forum/ or something. What I'm saying is, how do I hide the file so it'll look like money.com/m/ is actually money.com ?? I need to hide the folder name the contents are in so I can host multiple sites, therefore the site will look like its the only site on the host so I don't have to add a redirect for it to direct it to the folder?   I'm currently using Ad-Rotate WordPress plugin on my WordPress site. I recently came to know of Google DFP. I'm currently adding 1-5 ads per day which will increase soon and am wondering if Google DFP is an alternate solution to Ad Rotate plugin. I want to mainly show ours and clients' ads and not AdSense. I'm just looking for an ad manager and was wondering if Google DFP is the right alternate solution. Where can I find a tutorial on how to use (add ads) Google DFP? (I already have an AdSense account)

• Website hacked, cpanel password not encrypted?

  Yesterday I found out that all the websites that are hosted on my webhosting site were hacked. I tried to change my password, and unbelievably, I COULD SEE my password there. This means my password is able to be decrypted. I asked customer support, and they say, its normal, CPanel saves the password like that. Is it true? I mean, cpanel password able to be decrypted? They blame me because my wordpress version is out of date. But 2 of my website are on different platforms. One made by CI and one by Wordpress, and all are hacked. Is this hosting reliable?

• How to configure Google sitemap links? [duplicate]

When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect).

• Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! Any help will be legendary! Cheers, Paul

• Moving a LAMP set up from 32 bit to 64 bit

  Hello everyone... I have setup an Ubuntu server 10.10 32bit on an old Dell D610 Laptop for testing. I have the latest PHP, MySQL and Apache with Wordpress installed. After the testing is over and once I finish adding material to my wordpress I will build a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit VM on Hyper-V. What I am wondering is , if it's best practice to build everything from scratch (which will take me more time and would like to avoid) or transfer the database and all other settings? If I choose to transfer how and what I need to do? Here's where I'd like some help as I am still an intermediate admin (If I can call it that!) I am looking forward for your help. Thanks!

• fault tolerant uploading tool

  I'm setting up a wordpress site for a friend who has some somewhat large audio files (150M)... He's on a bad connection and I'd guess it'll take him a while to upload those files with the normal wordpress way. I'm looking for a tool that I can install on the server that allows uploads and is also fault tolerant... for example if you loses his connection, or power, or whatever it'll pick up where it left off. I realize web technologies probably don't do that, but perhaps flash or something? Any ideas?

• PHP error log does not display script names nor does it display the errors' line numbers [migrated]

  I think the title is self-explanatory, and my Google-fu isn't bringing up anything useful. I'm working on a new host, and my php error log only displays the error itself, not which script is the offender, nor which line number the error is occurring on. Makes it a tad difficult to debug, especially since there's only 1 error in the script. More info: I'm not using a custom error handler that I'm aware of. This is a standard Wordpress install. The error was [27-Aug-2012 19:22:36 UTC] PHP NOTICE: Trying to get property of non-object. Just no script name or line number in the error I found that Wordpress' error logging contained the information to debug the problem, but that doesn't explain why the log didn't contain line number or script.

• Private downloads [on hold]

  I am setting up a personal website and I would like to be able to share certain files with friends (e.g. photo albums or documents). Of course, each of the files should only be accessible to certain people, for example with a password or a private address. I would like to have a simple system, easy to maintain. I'm quite sure that Wordpress would let me know do something but keeping a Wordpress installation just for sharing a few files per month seems too much work. I am thinking of using the Apache capabilities for folder or file password protecting. Is this the best idea? Or would it be better just to block the directory navigation so that only people with the full path for each of the files can download them? Thanks!

• C# Lack of Static Inheritance - What Should I Do?

  Alright, so as you probably know, static inheritance is impossible in C#. I understand that, however I'm stuck with the development of my program. I will try to make it as simple as possible. Lets say our code needs to manage objects that are presenting aircrafts in some airport. The requirements are as follows: There are members and methods that are shared for all aircrafts There are many types of aircrafts, each type may have its own extra methods and members. There can be many instances for each aircraft type. Every aircraft type must have a friendly name for this type, and more details about this type. For example a class named F16 will have a static member FriendlyName with the value of "Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon". Other programmers should be able to add more aircrafts, although they must be enforced to create the same static details about the types of the aircrafts. In some GUI, there should be a way to let the user see the list of available types (with the details such as FriendlyName) and add or remove instances of the aircrafts, saved, lets say, to some XML file. So, basically, if I could enforce inherited classes to implement static members and methods, I would enforce the aircraft types to have static members such as FriendlyName. Sadly I cannot do that. So, what would be the best design for this scenario?

• Implementing crossover in genetic programming

  Hi, I'm writing a genetic programming (GP) system (in C but that's a minor detail). I've read a lot of the literature (Koza, Poli, Langdon, Banzhaf, Brameier, et al) but there are some implementation details I've never seen explained. For example: I'm using a steady state population rather than a generational approach, primarily to use all of the computer's memory rather than reserve half for the interim population. Q1. In GP, as opposed to GA, when you perform crossover you select two parents but do you create one child or two, or is that a free choice you have? Q2. In steady state GP, as opposed to a generational system, what members of the population do the children created by crossover replace? This is what I haven't seen discussed. Is it the two parents, or is it two other, randomly-selected members? I can understand if it's the latter, and that you might use negative tournament selection to choose members to replace, but would that not create premature convergence? (After a crossover event the population contains the two original parents plus two children of those parents, and two other random members get removed. Elitism is inherent.) Q3. Is there a Web forum or mailing list focused on GP? Oddly I haven't found one. Yahoo's GP group is used almost exclusively for announcements, the Poli/Langdon Field Guide forum is almost silent, and GP discussions on general/game programming sites like gamedev.net are very basic. Foo implements IsSerializable, has primitive and serializable members as well as other transient members and a no-arg constructor. class Foo implements IsSerializable { // transient members // primitive members public Foo() {} public void bar() {} } Also a Service which handles RPC comunication. // server code public interface MyServiceImpl { public void doStuff(Foo foo); } public interface MyServiceAsync { void doStuff(Foo foo, AsyncCallback<Void> async); } How i use this: private MyServiceAsync myService = GWT.create(MyService.class); Foo foo = new Foo(); ... AsyncCallback callback = new new AsyncCallback {...}; myService.doStuff(foo, callback); In the above case the code is running, and the onSuccess() method of callback instance gets executed. But when I override the bar() method on foo instance like this: Foo foo = new Foo() { public void bar() { //do smthng different } } AsyncCallback callback = new new AsyncCallback {...}; myService.doStuff(foo, callback); I get the GWT SerializationException. Please enlighten me, because I really don't understand why.

  Having read this question In what order are the different parts of a class initialized when a class is loaded in the JVM? and the related JLS. The control goes like: superclass (Animal): static variables and static blocks subclass (Dog): static variables and static blocks superclass (Animal): instance variables and instance blocks sublcass (Dog):instance variables and instance blocks What is the reason why it is in this way rather than : superclass -> static members superclass -> instance members subclass -> static members sublcass-> instance members

• [Rails3] How to do multiple many to many relationships between the same two tables.

  Hi. I have a model of a club where I want to model the two entities Meeting and Member. There are actually two many-to-many relationships between these entities though, as for any meeting a Member can either be a Speaker or a Guest. Now I am an OO thinker, so would normally just create the two classes and each one would just have two arrays of the other inside, but rails is making me think a bit more data centric here, so I realise I need to break these M2M relationships up with join tables Speakers and Guests which I have done, but now I am having trouble describing the relationships in the models. The two join table models both have "belongs_to :meeting" and "belongs_to :member" and I think that should be sufficient. I am not however sure about the Meeting and Member models though. Each one has "has_many :guests" and "has_many: speakers" but I am not sure if I also want to go: has_many :members, :through = :guests has_many :members, :through = :speakers But I suspect that this is like declaring two "members" that will clash. I also thought about: has_many :guests, :through = :guests has_many :speakers, :through = :speakers Does that make sense? How would ActiveRecord know that they are in fact Members? I have found heaps of examples of polymorphic m2m relationships and m2m relationships where 1 table references itself, but no good examples to help me mode this situation where two separate tables have two different m2m relationships. Anyone got any tips?

• Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of having read-only properties?

  I know how to use properties and I understand that they implicitly call underlying get and set accessors, depending on whether we are writing to or reading from a property. static void Main(string[] args) { A a = new A(); (a.b).i = 100; } class A { private B _b = new B(); public B b { get { return _b; } } } class B { public int i; } What code (a.b).i = 100; essentially does is that first property’s get accessor returns a reference to an object _b, and once we have this reference, we are able to access _b’s members and change their values. Thus, in our example, having read only property only prevents outside code from changing the value of a reference variable _b, but it doesn’t prevent outside code from accessing _b’s members. So it seems that property can only detect whether we are trying to read from or write to a variable ( in our case variable _b ) located on the stack, while it’s not able to detect whether we’re trying to also write to members of an object to which the variable on the stack ( assuming this variable is of reference type ) points to. a) But doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of having read-only properties? Wouldn’t it be more effective if properties had the ability to also detect whether we’re trying to access members of an object returned by get accessor( assuming backing field is of a reference type )? thank you

  Active record is a neet concept but sometimes I find it difficult to get more complicated queries to work. I find this is at least one place the CI docs are lacking. Anyway, This is the sql I wrote. It returns the expected results of quests not yet completed by the user that are unlocked and within the users level requirements: SELECT writing_quests . * FROM `writing_quests` LEFT OUTER JOIN members_quests_completed ON members_quests_completed.quest_id = writing_quests.id LEFT OUTER JOIN members ON members.id = $user_id WHERE writing_quests.unlocked =1 AND writing_quests.level_required <= $userlevel AND members_quests_completed.user_id IS NULL This is the codeigniter active record query, it returns all quests that are unlocked and within the users level requirement: $this->db->select('writing_quests.*'); $this->db->from('writing_quests'); $this->db->join('members_quests_completed', 'members_quests_completed.quest_id = writing_quests.id', 'left outer'); $this->db->join('members', "members.id = $user_id", 'left outer'); $this->db->where('writing_quests.unlock', 1); $this->db->where('writing_quests.level_required <=', $userlevel); $this->db->where('members_quests_completed.user_id is null', null, true); I'm guessing there is something wrong with the way I am asking for Nulls. The models look roughly like this: class Team has_many :team_members has_many :members, :through => :team_members end class Member has_many :team_members has_many :teams, :through => :team_members end class TeamMember belongs_to :team belongs_to :member # and this model has some validations too end The form I have built is for selecting which members should be in a team. I won't paste the form, but it uses the form_tag method and basically sends an array of hashes which contain a member_id and a squad_number. I then update the database with an action that looks roughly like this (simplified a bit, but you get the jist): @team.transaction do @team.team_members = params[:team_members].collect{|tm| @team.team_members.new(tm)} if @team.save redirect_to ... else render :action => :members end end Everything works great but I am validating the squad_number for uniqueness and numerically. So, when any of those validations fail, how do I get access to them in my view, and how do I ascertain which of the many members it has failed on?
