  • Sound not playing on Windows XP - SoundEffect or Song: Monogame

    - by ashes999
I'm trying to integrate sound into my Monogame game. I don't have the content pipeline hack -- just straight Monogame (Beta 3) at this point. (I tried adding the content pipeline, but ran into some issues.) I added a .wav file to my /Content directory, and I can create and instantiate both SoundEffect and Song classes. However, both show durations of 00:00:00 (on a ten-second long file), and neither plays. I can call LoadContent without any issue. But when I call Play, nothing plays. I've tried a couple of different sounds, and different formats (MP3 and WAV) to rule that out. Only WAV seems to even load without crashing out, but it doesn't play. There seems to be a GitHub issue that fixes this problem in 2.5.1. Downgrading to 2.5.1 doesn't fix this problem; it seems like it's fixed in 3.0 (_data is set in the SoundEffect instance). This issue only occurs on Windows XP. I tested it on a Windows 7 laptop, and the sound plays fine.

  • Looping music with intro in XNA using SoundEffect

    - by Jordan Roher
I have two sound files: Sound A is an 18 second intro designed to be played once Sound B is a 1 minute looping track I'd like to play Sound A once, then once Sound A is done, immediately play Sound B and keep looping Sound B until I tell it to stop. This is supposed to be looping town music in an RPG. I've tried doing this in code using just SoundEffect, but there's a tiny yet noticeable gap between the end of Sound A and the beginning of Sound B. Even if I put monitoring code watching Sound A's SoundEffectInstance.State in the Update() function, I haven't been able to start Sound B exactly when Sound A finishes so that it's seamless. I'd prefer to use SoundEffect because I can load WMA files rather than being stuck with WAVs in XACT.

  • Xcode best audio practices

    - by Zachary Webert
What is the best practice for creating an audio prompt within my app, which will append different portions of audio together to ask a question? ex. "What is" + "foo"? "What is" + "bar"? I have developed a "AudioQueue" object using audiotool box which uses AudioServicesPlaySystemSound() and it is working perfectly. Is there anything wrong with playing this type of audio through the alert system. If so what are my alternatives?? Thank you

  • Loading SpriteFont through a different class than Game.cs

    - by MintyAnt
I am trying to load up a single SpriteFont to print some debug information. In our current game, we load up both Textures and Music through a ResourceManager. They are both loaded with a filestream, and thus do not require Content.Load SoundEffect soundEffect = SoundEffect.FromStream( fs ); Since this ResourceManager does not inherit from Game or is like Game.cs, I cannot use the usual method: SpriteFont spriteFont = Content.Load<SpriteFont>(resource.Key.Item2); Anyone have any idea how I can either: -Load the SpriteFont a different way -Create my own Contentmanager

  • How do I properly use String literals for loading content?

    - by Dave Voyles
    I've been using verbatim string literals for some time now, and never quite thought about using a regular string literal until I started to come across them in Microsoft provided XNA samples. With that said, I'm trying to implement a new AudioManager class from the Net Rumble sample. I have two (2) issues here: Question 1: In my code for my GameplayScreen screen I have a folder location written as the following, and it works fine: menuButton = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuButton"); menuClose = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuClose"); If you notice, you'll see that I'm using a verbatim string, with a forward slash "/". In the AudioManager class, they use a regular string literal, but with two backslashes "\". I understand that one is used as an escape, but why are they BACK instead of FORWARD? (See below) soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>("audio\\wav\\"+ soundName); Question 2: I seem to be doing everything correctly in my AudioManager class, but I'm not sure of what this line means: audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.xnb"); I suppose that the *xnb means look for everything BUT files that end in *xnb? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my file locations, as the sound effects are not playing. My code is not much different from what I've linked to above. private AudioManager(Game game, DirectoryInfo audioDirectory) : base(game) { try { audioFolder = audioDirectory; audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.mp3"); soundList = new Dictionary<string, SoundEffect>(); for (int i = 0; i < audioFileList.Length; i++) { string soundName = Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(audioFileList[i].Name); soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx\" + soundName); soundList[soundName].Name = soundName; } // Plays this track while the GameplayScreen is active soundtrack = game.Content.Load<Song>("boomer"); } catch (NoAudioHardwareException) { // silently fall back to silence } }

  • Convert a Relative URL to an Absolute URL in Actionscript / Flex

    - by Bear
I am working with Flex, and I need to take a relative URL source property and convert it to an absolute URL before loading it. The specific case I am working with involves tweaking SoundEffect's load method. I need to determine if a file will be loaded from the local file system or over the network from looking at the source property, and the easiest way I've found to do this is to generate the absolute URL. I'm having trouble generating the absolute URL for sound effect in particular. Here were my initial thoughts, which haven't worked. Look for the DisplayObject that the Sound Effect targets, and use its loaderInfo property. The target is null when the SoundEffect loads, so this doesn't work. Look at FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication, at the url or loaderInfo properties. Neither of these are set, however. Look at the FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.systemManager.loaderInfo. This was also not set. The SoundEffect.as code basically boils down to var url:String = "mySound.mp3"; /*>> I'd like to convert the URL to absolute form here and tweak it as necessary <<*/ var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url); var loader:Loader = new Loader(); loader.load(req); Does anyone know how to do this? Any help clarifying the rules of how relative urls are resolved for URLRequests in ActionScript would also be much appreciated. edit I would also be perfectly satisfied with some way to tell whether the url will be loaded from the local file system or over the network. Looking at an absolute URL it would just be easy to look at the prefix, like file:// or http://.

  • Conflit between AVAudioRecorder and AVAudioPlayer

    - by John
Hi, here is my problem : The code (FooController) : NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"mySound" ofType:@"m4v"]; soundEffect = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:path] error:NULL]; [soundEffect play]; // MicBlow micBlow = [[MicBlowController alloc]init]; And MicBlowController contains : NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:@"/dev/null"]; NSDictionary *settings = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: [NSNumber numberWithFloat: 44100.0], AVSampleRateKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: kAudioFormatAppleLossless], AVFormatIDKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: 1], AVNumberOfChannelsKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: AVAudioQualityMax], AVEncoderAudioQualityKey, nil]; and [recorder updateMeters]; const double ALPHA = 0.05; double peakPowerForChannel = pow(10,(0.05*[recorder peakPowerForChannel:0])); lowPassResults = ALPHA * peakPowerForChannel + (1.0 - ALPHA) * lowPassResults; NSLog(@"Average input: %f Peak input %f Low pass results: %f",[recorder averagePowerForChannel:0],[recorder peakPowerForChannel:0],lowPassResults); If I play the background sound and try to get the peak from the mic I get this log : Average input: 0.000000 Peak input -120.000000 Low pass results: 0.000001 But if I comment all parts about AVAudioPlayer it works. I think there is a problem of channel. Thanks

  • Snake Game Help

    - by MuhammadA
I am making a snake game and learning XNA at the same time. I have 3 classes : Game.cs, Snake.cs and Apple.cs My problem is more of a conceptual problem, I want to know which class is really responsible for ... detecting collision of snake head on apple/itself/wall? which class should increase the snakes speed, size? It seems to me that however much I try and put the snake stuff into snake.cs that game.cs has to know a lot about the snake, like : -- I want to increase the score depending on size of snake, the score variable is inside game.cs, which means now I have to ask the snake its size on every hit of the apple... seems a bit unclean all this highly coupled code. or -- I DO NOT want to place the apple under the snake... now the apple suddenly has to know about all the snake parts, my head hurts when I think of that. Maybe there should be some sort of AppleLayer.cs class that should know about the snake... Whats the best approach in such a simple scenario? Any tips welcome. • weak or strong for IBOutlet and other

    - by Piero
I have switched my project to ARC, and I don't understand if I have to use strong or weak for IBOutlets. Xcode do this: in interface builder, if a create a UILabel for example and I connect it with assistant editor to my ViewController, it create this: @property (nonatomic, strong) UILabel *aLabel; It uses the strong, instead I read a tutorial on RayWenderlich website that say this: But for these two particular properties I have other plans. Instead of strong, we will declare them as weak. @property (nonatomic, weak) IBOutlet UITableView *tableView; @property (nonatomic, weak) IBOutlet UISearchBar *searchBar; Weak is the recommended relationship for all outlet properties. These view objects are already part of the view controller’s view hierarchy and don’t need to be retained elsewhere. The big advantage of declaring your outlets weak is that it saves you time writing the viewDidUnload method. Currently our viewDidUnload looks like this: - (void)viewDidUnload { [super viewDidUnload]; self.tableView = nil; self.searchBar = nil; soundEffect = nil; } You can now simplify it to the following: - (void)viewDidUnload { [super viewDidUnload]; soundEffect = nil; } So use weak, instead of the strong, and remove the set to nil in the videDidUnload, instead Xcode use the strong, and use the self... = nil in the viewDidUnload. My question is: when do I have to use strong, and when weak? I want also use for deployment target iOS 4, so when do I have to use the unsafe_unretain? Anyone can help to explain me well with a small tutorial, when use strong, weak and unsafe_unretain with ARC?

  • How to check properties of an audio [closed]

    - by Ashni Goyal
Possible Duplicate: Tool to view video/audio file information Soundeffect class in WP7 requires following properties of the .wav file. The Stream object must point to the head of a valid PCM wave file. Also, this wave file must be in the RIFF bitstream format. The audio format has the following restrictions: Must be a PCM wave file Can only be mono or stereo Must be 8 or 16 bit Sample rate must be between 8,000 Hz and 48,000 Hz How can we check these properties for a given audio ?

  • Loading sound in XNA without the Content Pipeline

    - by David Gouveia
I'm working on a "Game Maker"-type of application for Windows where the user imports his own assets to be used in the game. I need to be able to load this content at runtime on the engine side. However I don't want the user to have to install anything more than the XNA runtime, so calling the content pipeline at runtime is out. For images I'm doing fine using Texture2D.FromStream. I've also noticed that XNA 4.0 added a FromStream method to the SoundEffect class but it only accepts PCM wave files. I'd like to support more than wave files though, at least MP3. Any recommendations? Perhaps some C# library that would do the decoding to PCM wave format.

  • Game Changing Features in the Silverlight 5 Beta (Part 3)

    - by mbcrump
Introduction In the second part of my “Game-changing Features” series, I investigated how to create multiple windows in a trusted Silverlight 5 application. Now, it is time to explore another set of features: SoundEffect Class for Low-Latency, Supporting Double- and Triple-Mouse Clicks and Linked Text Containers.  If you followed my previous tutorial, then you should be ready to get started. The full source code for all three of the projects will be available as a separate download with this article. The full article is hosted on SSWUG and you can access it by clicking here. • XNA Xbox 360 Content Manager Thread freezing Draw Thread

    - by Alikar
I currently have a game that takes in large images, easily bigger than 1MB, to serve as backgrounds. I know exactly when this transition is supposed to take place, so I made a loader class to handle loading these large images in the background, but when I load the images it still freezes the main thread where the drawing takes place. Since this code runs on the 360 I move the thread to the 4th hardware thread, but that doesn't seem to help. Below is the class I am using. Any thoughts as to why my new content manager which should be in its own thread is interrupting the draw in my main thread would be appreciated. namespace FileSystem { /// <summary> /// This is used to reference how many objects reference this texture. /// Everytime someone references a texture we increase the iNumberOfReferences. /// When a class calls remove on a specific texture we check to see if anything /// else is referencing the class, if it is we don't remove it. • XNA 3D model collision is inaccurate

    - by Daniel Lopez
I am creating a classic game in 3d that deals with asteriods and you have to shoot them and avoid being hit from them. I can generate the asteroids just fine and the ship can shoot bullets just fine. But the asteroids always hit the ship even it doesn't look they are even close. I know 2D collision very well but not 3D so can someone please shed some light to my problem. Thanks in advance. • Creating a new instance, C#

    - by Dave Voyles
This sounds like a very n00b question, but bear with me here: I'm trying to access the position of my bat (paddle) in my pong game and use it in my ball class. I'm doing this because I want a particle effect to go off at the point of contact where the ball hits the bat. Each time the ball hits the bat, I receive an error stating that I haven't created an instance of the bat. I understand that I have to (or can use a static class), but I'm not sure of how to do so in this example. I've included both my Bat and Ball classes. namespace Pong { #region Using Statements using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics; using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Input; #endregion public class Ball { #region Fields private readonly Random rand; private readonly Texture2D texture; private readonly SoundEffect warp; private double direction; private bool isVisible; private float moveSpeed; private Vector2 position; private Vector2 resetPos; private Rectangle size; private float speed; private bool isResetting; private bool collided; private Vector2 oldPos; private ParticleEngine particleEngine; private ContentManager contentManager; private SpriteBatch spriteBatch; private bool hasHitBat; private AIBat aiBat; private Bat bat; #endregion #region Constructors and Destructors /// <summary> /// Constructor for the ball /// </summary> public Ball(ContentManager contentManager, Vector2 ScreenSize) { moveSpeed = 15f; speed = 0; texture = contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/balls/redBall"); direction = 0; size = new Rectangle(0, 0, texture.Width, texture.Height); resetPos = new Vector2(ScreenSize.X / 2, ScreenSize.Y / 2); position = resetPos; rand = new Random(); isVisible = true; hasHitBat = false; // Everything to do with particles List<Texture2D> textures = new List<Texture2D>(); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/circle")); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/star")); textures.Add(contentManager.Load<Texture2D>(@"gfx/particle/diamond")); particleEngine = new ParticleEngine(textures, new Vector2()); } #endregion #region Public Methods and Operators /// <summary> /// Checks for the collision between the bat and the ball.
