  • How to see "anti if" movement and its gaol?

    - by Vijay Shanker
I have a developer for last 3 years, have been using if-else or if-else if statements a lot in my programing habit. And today, I found This link. One obvious sample i put here public void doSomthing(String target, String object){ //validate requests if(target != null && target.trim().length() < 1){ //invalid request; } //further logic } Now, I have seen this sort of check all over the places, libraries. So, I wanted to have a discussion about the worthiness of such a movement. Please let me know your views.

  • Entities equals() - hashcode() - toString(). How to correctly implement them?

    - by spike07
I'm implementing equals() - hashcode() - toString() of my Entities using all the available fields in the bean. I'm getting some Lazy init Exception on the frontend when I try to compare the equality or when I print the obj state. That's because some list in the entity can be lazy initialized. I'm wondering what's the correct way to for implementing equals() and toString() on an Entity Obj

  • How to store currently logged on user in DB?

    - by stacker
Using Seam 2.1.2 and JSF 1.2 I wonder how to store the users login name in the database. In plain JSF I would simply lookup FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRemoteUser();in a backing bean and set the value into a persistent object. How can I achieve that the users name will be stored in the DB?

  • Is catching NumberFormatException a bad practice?

    - by integeruser
I have to parse a String that can assume hex values or other non-hex values 0xff, 0x31 or A, PC, label, and so on. I use this code to divide the two cases: String input = readInput(); try { int hex = Integer.decode(input); // use hex ... } catch (NumberFormatException e) { // input is not a hex, continue parsing } Can this code be considered "ugly" or difficult to read? Are there other (maybe more elegant) solutions? EDIT : I want to clarify that (in my case) a wrong input doesn't exist: i just need to distinguish if it is a hex number, or not. And just for completeness, i'm making a simple assebler for DCPU-16.

  • Best way to delay access to static web pages until services become available with J2EE

    - by Dean Povey
I have a J2EE application front-ended by a bunch of GWT pages. When the server is starting up, it is possible that these static pages can be accessed before the services required to implement the GWT RPC calls (database etc) are available. I wondering what the best approach is to prevent a user accessing this static content before these services become available. For the purpose of this exercise, assume that there is an isInitialized() method somewhere. I am happy with either a page displaying an error message or simply refusing the connection.

  • marshal Map<String, String> to .xml

    - by richardl
If I have Map setup like: map.put("foo", "123"); map.put("bar", "456"); map.put("baz", "789"); then I want to do something like: for (String key : map.keySet().toArray(new String[0])) { // marshall out to .xml a tag with the name key and the // value map.get(key) } So what it will marshal out is something like: <map> <foo>123</foo> <bar>456</bar> <baz>789</baz> </map> Can I do this with some fancy JAXB annotations or is there something else that lends it self to dynamic element names? TIA

  • How to map a search object to a class with more fields with JPA annotations

    - by Moli
Hi all, I'm a newbie with JPA. I need to map a search object to a table. The search object has only and id, name. The big object has more fileds id, name, adress and more. I use this as big object view plaincopy to clipboardprint? I use this as big object @Entity @Table(name="users") public class User { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) private long id; private String name; private String adress; private String keywords; } //this is my search object @XXX public class UserSearch { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO) private long id; private String name; } What annotations I need to use to map the search object to the table users? I'm using spring+struts2+hibernate+JPA. Help is appreciated! Thanks!

  • Hibernate Query - Get latest versions by timestamp?

    - by Slim
I have a database that is being used as a sort of version control system. That is, instead of ever updating any rows, I add a new row with the same information. Each row also contains a version column that is a date timestamp, so the only difference is the new row will have a more recent timestamp. What I'm having trouble with is writing an efficient hibernate query to return the latest version of these rows. For the sake of example, these are rows in a table called Product, the timestamped column is version. There are multiple versions of multiple products in the table. So there may be multiple versions (rows) of ProductA, multiple versions of ProductB, etc. And I would like to grab the latest version of each. Can I do this in just a single hibernate query? session.createQuery("select product from Product product where...?"); Or would this require some intermediate steps?

  • Looking for an appropriate design pattern

    - by user1066015
I have a game that tracks user stats after every match, such as how far they travelled, how many times they attacked, how far they fell, etc, and my current implementations looks somewhat as follows (simplified version): Class Player{ int id; public Player(){ int id = Math.random()*100000; PlayerData.players.put(id,new PlayerData()); } public void jump(){ //Logic to make the user jump //... //call the playerManager PlayerManager.jump(this); } public void attack(Player target){ //logic to attack the player //... //call the player manager PlayerManager.attack(this, target); } } Class PlayerData{ public static HashMap<int, PlayerData> players = new HashMap<int,PlayerData>(); int id; int timesJumped; int timesAttacked; } public void incrementJumped(){ timesJumped++; } public void incrementAttacked(){ timesAttacked++; } } Class PlayerManager{ public static void jump(Player player){ players.get(player.getId()).incrementJumped(); } public void incrementAttacked(Player player, Player target){ players.get(player.getId()).incrementAttacked(); } } So I have a PlayerData class which holds all of the statistics, and brings it out of the player class because it isn't part of the player logic. Then I have PlayerManager, which would be on the server, and that controls the interactions between players (a lot of the logic that does that is excluded so I could keep this simple). I put the calls to the PlayerData class in the Manager class because sometimes you have to do certain checks between players, for instance if the attack actually hits, then you increment "attackHits". The main problem (in my opinion, correct me if I'm wrong) is that this is not very extensible. I will have to touch the PlayerData class if I want to keep track of a new stat, by adding methods and fields, and then I have to potentially add more methods to my PlayerManager, so it isn't very modulized. If there is an improvement to this that you would recommend, I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

  • JLabel wont change color twice

    - by Aly
Hi, I have the following code: public class Test extends JFrame implements ActionListener{ private static final Color TRANSP_WHITE = new Color(new Float(1), new Float(1), new Float(1), new Float(0.5)); private static final Color TRANSP_RED = new Color(new Float(1), new Float(0), new Float(0), new Float(0.1)); private static final Color[] COLORS = new Color[]{ TRANSP_RED, TRANSP_WHITE}; private int index = 0; private JLabel label; private JButton button; public Test(){ super(); setLayout(new BoxLayout(getContentPane(), BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); label = new JLabel("hello world"); label.setOpaque(true); label.setBackground(TRANSP_WHITE); getContentPane().add(label); button = new JButton("Click Me"); button.addActionListener(this); getContentPane().add(button); pack(); setVisible(true); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { if(e.getSource().equals(button)){ label.setBackground(COLORS[index % (COLORS.length - 1)]); } } public static void main(String[] args) { new Test(); } } When I run it I get the label with the TRANSP_WHITE background and then when I click the button this color changes to TRANSP_RED but when I click it again I see no change in color. Does anyone know why? Thanks

  • Problem using FormLayout in Swing

    - by Dimitri
Hi I am using the FormLayout. I just discovered it and it's powerful layout manager. I would like to layout 4 components (outlined, properties, tgraph, library) in 3 columns. I want to layout my library component on top of the outlined component in one column, the graph and the properties component in one column. But it doesn't work. Maybe I miss something. Here is my code : private void layoutComponent() { JPanel panel = new JPanel(); FormLayout layout = new FormLayout( "right:p,10dlu,300dlu,left:max(50dlu;p)", "top:pref, center:p,p"); layout.setRowGroups(new int[][]{{1,3}}); PanelBuilder builder = new PanelBuilder(layout, panel); builder.setDefaultDialogBorder(); CellConstraints constraints = new CellConstraints(); builder.add(library, constraints.xy(1, 1)); builder.add(outline,constraints.xy(1, 3)); builder.add(tgraph,constraints.xy(3, 1)); builder.add(properties,constraints.xy(4, 1)); getContentPane().add(panel);r code here } Can someone help plz. Thx :)

  • Having Latest Tests Results info in the notified email with Hudson

    - by Roberto
I have a project with a lot of tests failing, so it would be great for me to receive by email the number of failed tests compare from the latest build. What i need is just the info that appears in the project's page by the test results link: Latest Test Result (10 failures / -2) Is this possible? I've already tried the email-ext plugin, but it is not telling me that info (I can have the list of failing tests with output etc., but I really just need that info above). Any ideas?

  • Is there anything wrong with a class with all static methods?

    - by MatthewMartin
I'm doing code review and came across a class that uses all static methods. The entrance method takes several arguments and then starts calling the other static methods passing along all or some of the arguments the entrance method received. It isn't like a Math class with largely unrelated utility functions. In my own normal programming, I rarely write methods where Resharper pops and says "this could be a static method", when I do, they tend to be mindless utility methods. Is there anything wrong with this pattern? Is this just a matter of personal choice if the state of a class is held in fields and properties or passed around amongst static methods using arguments?

  • Any way to make a generic List where I can add a type AND a subtype?

    - by user383178
I understand why I cannot do the following: private class Parent { }; private class Child extends Parent { }; private class GrandChild extends Child { }; public void wontCompile(List<? extends Parent> genericList, Child itemToAdd) { genericList.add(itemToAdd); } My question is there ANY practical way to have a typesafe List where you can call add(E) where E is known to be only a Parent or a Child? I vaguely remember some use of the "|" operator as used for wildcard bounds, but I cannot find it in the spec... Thanks!

  • Can I user a layout on the android to render just part of an image at a time?

    - by gamernb
I have an image file that has all the character sprites that I will be using in a game, and I want to make a layout that will allow the user to cycle through each image to be able to pick which one they want. So, I have one large image, and I need to render just a small (32 x 32) section of it at a time. Is that possible with the layouts or will I have to use a canvas, and manually do most of this?

  • What is "Android Activity", what is the difference between "BlankActivity", and "MasterDetailFlow"?

    - by Adrianus Hendry
I want to create an android application using Eclipse Juno, but then i am getting confused of what the "activity" actually is. The first time i created android app project, there was an option that require me to select whether i want to create activity, and if so, i need to choose between BlankActivity and MasterDetailFlow. Also, is it possible that an application has many activities? I think i need some tutorials about creating android application using eclipse, so if you have a good tuts either it is in text or videos i will appreciate it. Actually i am a newbie in mobile apps development, so i wish the answer will be less complex. Thanks in advance.
