• How can I use Java to communicate to device through USB port?

  I just recently learn Java and try to communicate to the device through USB port connection. I've have used C# with OpenNETCF which allows me to send file and retrieve file on the device through USB port; how can I achieve this with java? I seearch on stackoverflow thread, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/544507/how-to-communicate-with-a-usb-device-under-windows-and-java, the comment made by christoffer is to hack the native code, but I don't quite which native code api that he referred to. RAPI, maybe?

• passing request params from jQuery to jersey service using json

  hi, im trying to POST (cross domain) some data to a jersey web service and retrieve a response (a GenericEntity object). • Meta Tags in Google Site Search

  Hi, I'm planning on implementing a google site search (and paying for it so I can get access to the XML). One thing I am wondering about is the possibility to use custom meta tags in it. I've heard yes from colleagues but nothing confirmed. Searching for an answer has given nothing (maybe because you cant?) Anybody knows? Edit: I want to be able to retrieve those meta tags from the search result to be able to provide different styling for different types of pages.

• ASP.NET MVC Session usage

  Currently I am using ViewData or TempData for object persistance in my ASP.NET MVC application. However in a few cases where I am storing objects into ViewData through my base controller class, I am hitting the database on every request (when ViewData["whatever"] == null). It would be good to persist these into something with a longer lifespan, namely session. Similarly in an order processing pipeline, I don't want things like Order to be saved to the database on creation. I would rather populate the object in memory and then when the order gets to a certain state, save it. So it would seem that session is the best place for this? Or would you recommend that in the case of order, to retrieve the order from the database on each request, rather than using session? Thoughts, suggestions appreciated. Thanks Ben

• Python PyQT4 - Adding an unknown number of QComboBox widgets to QGridLayout

  Hi all, I want to retrieve a list of people's names from a queue and, for each person, place a checkbox with their name to a QGridLayout using the addWidget() function. I can successfully place the items in a QListView, but they just write over the top of each other rather than creating a new row. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I could fix this? self.chk_People = QtGui.QListView() items = self.jobQueue.getPeopleOffQueue() for item in items: QtGui.QCheckBox('%s' % item, self.chk_People) self.jobQueue.getPeopleOffQueue() would return something like ['Bob', 'Sally', 'Jimmy'] if that helps.

• Best practices retrieving XML/stream from HTTP in Android

  Hello everyone, what are the best practices parsing XML from an HTTP resource in Android? I've been using HttpURLConnection to retrieve an InputStream, wrapping it with a BufferedInputStream, and then using SAX to parse the buffered stream. For the most part it works, though I do receive error reports of SocketTimeoutException: The operation timed out or general parsing error. I believe it's due to the InputStream. Would using HttpClient instead of HttpURLConnection help? If yes, why? Should the stream be output to a file, having the file parsed instead of the stream? Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  What is the "dispatcher" pattern and how would I implement it in code? I have a property bag of generic objects and would like to have the retrieval delegated to a generic method. Currently, I have properties looking for a specific key in the bag. For example: private Dictionary<String, Object> Foo { get; set; } private const String WidgetKey = "WIDGETKEY"; public Widget? • How do I get the position of a result in the list after an order_by?

  I'm trying to find an efficient way to find the rank of an object in the database related to it's score. My naive solution looks like this: rank = 0 for q in Model.objects.all().order_by('score'): if q.name == 'searching_for_this' return rank rank += 1 It should be possible to get the database to do the filtering, using order_by: Model.objects.all().order_by('score').filter(name='searching_for_this') But there doesn't seem to be a way to retrieve the index for the order_by step after the filter. Is there a better way to do this? (Using python/django and/or raw SQL.) My next thought is to pre-compute ranks on insert but that seems messy.

• Implementing OFX specification with javascript

  Hey all, I am working on a personal project and need to retrieve financial data. After looking around how this is normally done it seems you can pay lots of money and license a service like Yodlee to get this data for you or you can implement a OFX client like wesabe has to communicate with financial institutions. Seeing as I don't have lots of money and wouldn't mind the challenge I decided to try to implement the ofx spec (unless one of you can suggest a cheap/free alternative!). I looked around for some ofx libraries other people have already written for use but didn't find anything that looked too great. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be a bad idea to attempt this in Javascript (using XMLSocket from actionscript to handle the actual socket communication). If there is some really bad reason why I shouldn't do this please bring it up. If there is I'll just do it in Java but I think it would be neat to have it completely in javascript so it runs client-side. Anyways I was hoping for some helpful input, thanks.

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). • Setting a property value on each of the results in a FetchedResults set

  Hi On my Core Data Entity "Book" i have a boolean property, 'wasViewed' (NSNumber numberWithBool) that tells me if the Book was "viewed". I would like to implement a sort of "reset" this property for all my NSManagedObjects "Book". So that I can set them all to NO between sessions. I use an NSPredicate to retrieve all the Books like this: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"wasViewed == %@", [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES]]; // code for setting entity, request etc... NSMutableArray *mutableFetchResults = [[[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error] mutableCopy] autorelease]; This is working just fine, however, now I need to set up a loop, go through each Book object, something like this: for(Book *b in mutableFetchResults) { [b setWasViewed:NO] } Is there a way to perform an action on each element that fits the predicate instead of retrieving it? So instead of executeFetchRequest on a managedObjectContext it could be executeOperationOnFetchRequestResults or something along those lines. Thanks for any input given:)

  I retrieve a USB flash drive serial number by means of ioctl HDIO_GET_IDENTITY as described here. Yet, for some flash drives there is no serial (for example my SanDisk Cruzer). Why some drives don not return a serial number? a) HDIO_GET_IDENTITY not implemented in driver ? b) They just don't have one ? c) Other ? (what?) Is there a specification (like IEEE) that describes where and how the serial number is stored inside the flash drive?

• Django: accessing session variables from within a template?

  Hi all If I set a session variable in Django, like: request.session["name"] = "name" Is there a way I can access it from within a template, or do I have to retrieve it from within a view, and then pass it to a template? Asking because I have around 10 little session variables that I'd like to access within a template, and passing all 10 from the view to the template could get a bit messy. (I have to use session variables because it's a HttpResponseRedirect, but storing the variables in a database is overkill for my purposes.) So - any way to grab session variables directly within a template?

• What database works well with 200+GB of data?

  I've been using mysql (with innodb; on Amazon rds) because it's sort of universal default, but it's been ridiculously under-performing, and tweaking it only delays the inevitable. The data is mostly relatively short (<1kB of bytes each) blobs information about 100Ms of urls. There is (or should be, mysql cannot seem to handle it) very high amount of insert / update / retrieve but few complex queries - not that complex queries wouldn't be useful, but because mysql is so slow that it's far faster to get the data out, process it locally, and cache the results somewhere. I can keep tweaking mysql and throwing more hardware at it, but it seems increasingly futile. So what are the options? SQL/relational model/etc. optional - anything will do as long as it's fast, networked, and language-independent.

  Hi, We have an AIR app and using a datagrid. We want to store the dataGrid.columns array in mySQL DB through PHP. This is needed because the user can customise the column headers of the datagrid and his preference needs to be stored and shown to him on his next login. Using HTTPService, we tried sending the dataGrid.columns array as a string, as follows, var ht:HTTPService = new HTTPService(); ht.url = Config.getServerURL(); ht.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; ht.resultFormat = "text"; ht.request["action"] = "updateGrid"; ht.request["headercolumns"] = colsArray.toString(); The data is stord as comma separated array string in DB.   I'm thinking of building a Restful app on either App engine or ec2 devloped in Java. I'm interested in opinions/experience of using the two options for this. The primary purpose is to create web services to write and retrieve data through a mobile device...basically creating an API for the service I want to create. It seems to me it would be quicker and cheaper in the beginning to go with google app engine using either restlet or grails.But I also think that I could run into problems in the future when I want to so somthing more advanced and might be restricted by app engines environment. I also want to be able to do data analysis on the data in the datastore as well. It seems that with app engine this would be hard as I don't have direct access to the datastore ( in Amazon I could still have access to the underlying db if I go with MySQL ) .

  Hi I have used SMO API.in that i have used SmoApplication.EnumAvailableServers(FALSE) and from that i have filtered local instances i have used this approch insted of true to make this as convinent for remote sqldiscovery also.using that api created a dll and use that dll in c++. Now this is working in all combinations but some times it is failed to retrieve the instannces in win2008 sql2008 cluster combination. if i run the exe for 5 times it got succeed for 3 times and failed for two times... What is wromg with win-sql2008 cluster .is there any additional changes needed to make it work properrly.My firewall is off and also added exception for tcp port 1433. • Strange tab ordering when creating controls after postback

  I have a button that opens a panel in a popup window and then performs a postback to retrieve data from the server and render some controls. Some of the controls are textboxes and some are dropdown lists and can be in any order. Everything works fine when tabbing through the textbox controls. But when tabbing from the first dropdown contorl found, the tab order 'gets lost' and it starts tabbing from the first control again. When I tab to the same dropdown list the second time 'round, it correctly tabs to the next control. Does anyone know what might be going on? Example: TextBox1 (Tab -> focus set to 'TextBox2') TextBox2 (Tab -> focus set to 'DropDown1') DropDown1 (Tab -> focus goes back up to 'TextBox1' - wtf?) TextBox3 Update: The TabIndex attribute is set on all controls.

• Handling big user IDs returned by FQL in PHP

  I'm using FQL to retrieve a list of users from Facebook. For consistency I get the result as JSON. This causes a problem - since the returned JSON encodes the user IDs as numbers, json_decode() converts these numbers to floating point values, because some are too big to fit in an int; of course, I need these IDs as strings. Since json_decode() does its own thing without accepting any behavior flags, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

  Hi All, is there a way to retrieve only the immediate children found by a call to DOMElement::getElementsByTagName? For example, I have an XML document that has a category element. That category element has sub category elements (which have the same structure), like: <category> <id>1</id> <name>Top Level Category Name</name> <subCategory> <id>2</id> <name>Sub Category Name</name> </subCategory> ... </category> If I have a DOMElement representing the top level category, $topLevelCategoryElement->getElementsByTagName('id'); will return a list with the nodes for all 'id' elements, where I want just the one from the top level. Any way to do this outside of using XPath?

  Hi, I have developed an application which has retrieved the information from remote location...so i put those in UITableView's Section.In response, i will be getting images also..for this i put the background process(only for images..because the app will take more time to retrieve images than text based information..).It is working fine...But if i scroll the tableview while loading the images..it is going to be crashed.... crash Log: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... could anyone has the solution for this..please let me know..how to resolve this crash...Even i used NSThread class for this.. but i didn't get the solution... Thanks, Srinivas G
