  • Starting MySQL after installing MySQL 5.5 from .rpm

    I m using Ubuntu 11.04. I have installed MySQL server and client ver 5.5.13. The problem i have is actually to start MySQL after installing it from the .rpm package obtained from the oracle site. I m not able to find any guide for configuring MySQL after completing its installation. I installed it using alien. I found some guides for older version of ubuntu which i find irrelevant. So Please help me in configuring and starting MySQL successfully.

    Welcome, Today i want test following exploit "exploit/multi/browser/java_signed_applet" on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop using Metasploit framework. I'm following that guide: http://pauldotcom.com/wiki/index.php/Episode185 When im trying to start exploit, i got error: JVM not initialized. You must install the Java Development Kit, the rjb ruby gem, and set the $JAVA_HOME variable. [-] Falling back to static signed applet. This exploit will still work, but the CERTCN and APPLETNAME variables will be ignored. I have installed sun-java6-jdk, and gem install rjb And patch to JAVA look working because: ls $JAVA_HOME bin ext jre LICENSE README.html COPYRIGHT include lib man THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.txt If anyone, have any idea... Except installation of backtrack what is not possible... Because i need use it on my Ubuntu, (have to virtualize XP for test) regards

    I've been tinkering with a regex answer by yukondude with little success. I'm trying to kill processes that are older than 10 minutes. I already know what the process IDs are. I'm looping over an array every 10 min to see if any lingering procs are around and need to be killed. Anybody have any quick thoughts on this?   • If I want to play the same sound 10 times per second, must I have 10 copies of that sound in memory?

    I have a sound that needs to get played 10 times per second. The sound is 1 second long. So it does overlap like 10 times. However, as far as I understand the Finch sound library, I would need 10 different instances of a sound in place so that I can play it 10 times at almost the same time. When I have just one instance, the sound would stop and play from the beginning on every iteration, but not overlap with itself. How to do that?

  • How can I perform a controlled shutdown of a virtualbox guest using VBoxManage?

    I'm currently testing Ubuntu 10.04, and have install the VirtualBox software. I have also installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a VirtualBox guest running on the host system. I've installed the VirtualBox Utils into the guest OS, as follows: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils What I want to be able to do is to initiate a controlled shutdown of the guest, from the host system using the VBoxManage command. I first tried this command: VBoxManage controlvm guest poweroff which worked, but didn't initiate a controlled shutdown, it effectively pulls the plug on the guest. I've since found that this command should do the trick: VBoxManage controlvm guest acpipowerbutton but this doesn't appear to do anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? p.s. I don't want to use SSH & Certificates to do this, as I'm also going to be running Windows guests, and I want the solution to work for all guests.

  • Why can't I copy files from a mac to a samba share?

    I have a share set up on my ubuntu 10.04 box, and the mac can see it, connect to it, and sort of write to it. When I try to copy a whole tree to the share, I get an error saying "The operation cannot be completed because you don't have access to some of the items". If I zip the directory, and copy that over, it succeeds. Any explanation?     I've installed a new Ubuntu 12.04 on an AWS EC2 instance and everything worked fine till now. I followed the instructions in this great tutorial: http://www.exratione.com/2012/05/a-mailserver-on-ubuntu-1204-postfix-dovecot-mysql/ Now i'm on the point "installing monit" and when i restart the service i get this error message now: monit: Cannot translate '(none)' to FQDN name -- Name or service not known I started googling and someone is writing there, that monit uses getaddrinfo in his startup-process to determine the hostname. Ok, so i thought i try out on myself what is getaddrinfo delivering, and then i got: getaddrinfo: command not found I guess, something is missing on my system. Can anyone help?

  • How do I backup my Ubuntu 9.10 system and then restore it to a new machine with different hardware?

    I have a nicely configured Ubuntu 9.10 machine, with crossover linux (from Codeweavers) installed. I have the Nvidia drivers installed. Everything is just as I want it. Now I want to move to a new machine with different hardware: different sized hard drive, different size RAM, different video card, etc. I tried the technique suggested on Ubuntu forums, "Howto: Backup and restore your system!". The results: New system complains about swap not being found New system complains about not finding Nvidia hardware, and I can't open the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers application (i.e., /usr/bin/jockey-gtk) to fix the problem. As result of nvidia, X-Windows is throwing errors, and the on screen process for fixing X-Windows isn't working. How do I restore a backup of my old system, including my Crossover Linux installation, to a new machine with different hardware installed?

  • Vim hanging after parsing .vimrc (even a blank one) file on Solaris 10

    Hello all, I am having a problem with vim 7.2 hanging (for about 10 seconds) after it parses the .vimrc file. I had a similar issue in the past with tcsh on linux, but it was resolved by setting TERM to xterm-color. The same does not resolve the issue here.     I've spent the last two hours trying to create an FTP user so I can transfer some files over to my Wordpress blog folder. /var/www/sergiotapia.me I'm using vsftpd and Ubuntu 12.04 for my FTP server and I've read tons of documentation, none of which seem to work. I still cannot log in with the FTP user, let alone test if I even have the read/write file permissions. Can a Linux guru here, help me out with a small step by step? I'm comfortable with the terminal and nano, so that's not an issue - I'll SSH into my box. Just tell me what to do and what commands to run. Specifically, this user needs to have read and write access to the /var/ folder and anything within it. I want to have 1 user that can do whatever the heck he wants on my Ubuntu 12.04 VPS machine.

I am not clear as what software can be used for this on Linux or Windows. I have users which use Windows and Linux both. I have used video editing on Mac using Final Cut Pro but the video on the above link is not some thing which can be achieved with FCP.(Or may be I am not aware) I am looking solution for 1) Linux users 2) Windows users In case of Linux it is Ubuntu for some users and Fedora for some others. I am a Linux guy so I am specifically posting this question in terms of Ubuntu but I also need suggestions for Windows type of users.I have no clue of such video animations at all.

    I have several Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers in production and I'm using apticron to check that my software is up to date, security-wise. However, by default, Ubuntu has the lucid-updates repository enabled. This means lots of low-priority updates (such as this) that I don't need and thus, extra work for me. Is it okay to just remove the lucid-updates line(s) in sources.list? I still get security updates via lucid-security, right?   • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from windows 7

    I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from windows 7, mounting from mac osx works fine. In windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does ubuntu need some special magic to allow windows 7 to mount an nfs share?     Hello Guys, I have installed Ubuntu9.10 on VM VirtualBox, on my HP laptop. My laptop has several USB ports and also a SD card port. Unfortunately, I'm unable to access both, my pen-drive on the USB port and my 8GB SD card inserted in the SD Card port. Can anyone suggest me what I should do for my Ubuntu to detect both of them?     (1) mount -t nfs remotehost:/remotedir localmountpoint -o owner,rw (2) mount -v -t nfs remotehost:/remotedir localmountpoint -o owner,rw (1) Used to work with Ubuntu 9 and now fails with Ubuntu 10 (2.6.32-21-generic kernel) with the error: mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified Strangely, adding -v (verbose) in (2) makes the problem go away. This is currently a blocker for me because the fstab line: remotehost:/remotedir localmountpoint nfs owner,rw 0 0 causes the same error (I don't believe I can specify verbose in fstab). Is this a bug in mount or my options really incorrect?

    How would I execute a query equivalent to "select top 10" in couch db? For example I have a "schema" like so: title body modified and I want to select the last 10 modified documents. As an added bonus if anyone can come up with a way to do the same only per category. So for: title category body modified return a list of latest 10 documents in each category. I am just wandering if such a query is possible in couchdb.

    I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?
