  • Issues with HLSL and lighting

    - by numerical25
    I am trying figure out whats going on with my HLSL code but I have no way of debugging it cause C++ gives off no errors. The application just closes when I run it. I am trying to add lighting to a 3d plane I made. below is my HLSL. The problem consist when my Pixel shader method returns the struct "outColor" . If I change the return value back to the struct "psInput" , everything goes back to working again. My light vectors and colors are at the top of the fx file // PS_INPUT - input variables to the pixel shader // This struct is created and fill in by the // vertex shader cbuffer Variables { matrix Projection; matrix World; float TimeStep; }; struct PS_INPUT { float4 Pos : SV_POSITION; float4 Color : COLOR0; float3 Normal : TEXCOORD0; float3 ViewVector : TEXCOORD1; }; float specpower = 80.0f; float3 camPos = float3(0.0f, 9.0, -256.0f); float3 DirectLightColor = float3(1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f); float3 DirectLightVector = float3(0.0f, 0.602f, 0.70f); float3 AmbientLightColor = float3(1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f); /*************************************** * Lighting functions ***************************************/ /********************************* * CalculateAmbient - * inputs - * vKa material's reflective color * lightColor - the ambient color of the lightsource * output - ambient color *********************************/ float3 CalculateAmbient(float3 vKa, float3 lightColor) { float3 vAmbient = vKa * lightColor; return vAmbient; } /********************************* * CalculateDiffuse - * inputs - * material color * The color of the direct light * the local normal * the vector of the direct light * output - difuse color *********************************/ float3 CalculateDiffuse(float3 baseColor, float3 lightColor, float3 normal, float3 lightVector) { float3 vDiffuse = baseColor * lightColor * saturate(dot(normal, lightVector)); return vDiffuse; } /********************************* * CalculateSpecular - * inputs - * viewVector * the direct light vector * the normal * output - specular highlight *********************************/ float CalculateSpecular(float3 viewVector, float3 lightVector, float3 normal) { float3 vReflect = reflect(lightVector, normal); float fSpecular = saturate(dot(vReflect, viewVector)); fSpecular = pow(fSpecular, specpower); return fSpecular; } /********************************* * LightingCombine - * inputs - * ambient component * diffuse component * specualr component * output - phong color color *********************************/ float3 LightingCombine(float3 vAmbient, float3 vDiffuse, float fSpecular) { float3 vCombined = vAmbient + vDiffuse + fSpecular.xxx; return vCombined; } //////////////////////////////////////////////// // Vertex Shader - Main Function /////////////////////////////////////////////// PS_INPUT VS(float4 Pos : POSITION, float4 Color : COLOR, float3 Normal : NORMAL) { PS_INPUT psInput; float4 newPosition; newPosition = Pos; newPosition.y = sin((newPosition.x * TimeStep) + (newPosition.z / 3.0f)) * 5.0f; // Pass through both the position and the color psInput.Pos = mul(newPosition , Projection ); psInput.Color = Color; psInput.ViewVector = normalize(camPos - psInput.Pos); return psInput; } /////////////////////////////////////////////// // Pixel Shader /////////////////////////////////////////////// //Anthony!!!!!!!!!!!     When I add the following to my code. // Define the input layout D3D10_INPUT_ELEMENT_DESC layout[] = { { L"POSITION", 0, DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32_FLOAT, 0, 0, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0 }, }; UINT numElements = sizeof(layout)/sizeof(layout[0]); I get the following error 1>c:\users\numerical25\desktop\intro todirectx\msdntutorials\tutorial0\tutorial\tutorial\main.cpp(43) : error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'const wchar_t [9]' to 'LPCSTR' The error points straight to that line of code. if i remove the code, everything compiles correctly.

    Now that the Unreal Development Kit is out and free to use by anyone, I am pretty excited to try it out. My understanding is that the programming is done through scripting in UnrealScript, I am wondering if any of you guys know of any good articles, tutorials, books, and references for Unreal Script or the Unreal Development Kit. • How did the Lunar Lander example make the image backgrounds transparent?

    - by user279112
    Hello. I'm trying to make a GUI program with the Android SDK, using their Lunar Lander example as a significant self-teaching tool in the process. I've noticed their sprites' images' backgrounds, which were at least usually pure white, did not show up in their program. I want to ask how they did that, since their site doesn't explain simple things very well. I've managed to pull that off before on another GUI SDK, wherein all I had to do was to call a function and pass it a few floats to define a certain color, and until my code told it to do otherwise, that function would make sure that that particular color in my sprites' images was totally transparent. However I've wrestled with the Lunar Lander example and getting my own program to show some custom graphics for a week or two now, and I haven't noticed any such function call in the Lunar Lander example. I tried to look for it, but I did not find anything. I've tried to Google some tutorial or other reference material, but what I've found so far is just straying off into unrelated areas and totally dodging this EXTREMELY important lesson on the SDK's basics. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • book "Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX 2nd edition" and newer DirectX api

    - by numerical25
    I got the book "Programming Role Playing Games with DirectX 2nd edition" and I notice there are things in the book that are now considered deprecated. There is a whole Section on DirectPlay. And as much as I would like to avoid this section, I am afraid it might screw up the entire engine he is trying to build. So I was just curious to know even though DirectPlay is considered deprecated by XNA, and directX10. Is it possible to use it still in DirectX 9 ??

  • creating a 3d plane using Frank Luna's technique

    - by numerical25
    I am creating a 3d plane that lays on the x and z axis. and has hills that extend on the y axis. bulk of the code looks like this float PeaksAndValleys::getHeight(float x, float z)const { return 0.3f*( z*sinf(0.1f*x) + x*cosf(0.1f*z) ); } void PeaksAndValleys::init(ID3D10Device* device, DWORD m, DWORD n, float dx) { md3dDevice = device; mNumRows = m; mNumCols = n; mNumVertices = m*n; mNumFaces = (m-1)*(n-1)*2; // Create the geometry and fill the vertex buffer. std::vector<Vertex> vertices(mNumVertices); float halfWidth = (n-1)*dx*0.5f; float halfDepth = (m-1)*dx*0.5f; for(DWORD i = 0; i < m; ++i) { float z = halfDepth - i*dx; for(DWORD j = 0; j < n; ++j) { float x = -halfWidth + j*dx; // Graph of this function looks like a mountain range. float y = getHeight(x,z); vertices[i*n+j].pos = D3DXVECTOR3(x, y, z); // Color the vertex based on its height. if( y < -10.0f ) vertices[i*n+j].color = BEACH_SAND; else if( y < 5.0f ) vertices[i*n+j].color = LIGHT_YELLOW_GREEN; else if( y < 12.0f ) vertices[i*n+j].color = DARK_YELLOW_GREEN; else if( y < 20.0f ) vertices[i*n+j].color = DARKBROWN; else vertices[i*n+j].color = WHITE; } } D3D10_BUFFER_DESC vbd; vbd.Usage = D3D10_USAGE_IMMUTABLE; vbd.ByteWidth = sizeof(Vertex) * mNumVertices; vbd.BindFlags = D3D10_BIND_VERTEX_BUFFER; vbd.CPUAccessFlags = 0; vbd.MiscFlags = 0; D3D10_SUBRESOURCE_DATA vinitData; vinitData.pSysMem = &vertices[0]; HR(md3dDevice->CreateBuffer(&vbd, &vinitData, &mVB)); // Create the index buffer. The index buffer is fixed, so we only // need to create and set once. std::vector<DWORD> indices(mNumFaces*3); // 3 indices per face // Iterate over each quad and compute indices. int k = 0; for(DWORD i = 0; i < m-1; ++i) { for(DWORD j = 0; j < n-1; ++j) { indices[k] = i*n+j; indices[k+1] = i*n+j+1; indices[k+2] = (i+1)*n+j; indices[k+3] = (i+1)*n+j; indices[k+4] = i*n+j+1; indices[k+5] = (i+1)*n+j+1; k += 6; // next quad } } D3D10_BUFFER_DESC ibd; ibd.Usage = D3D10_USAGE_IMMUTABLE; ibd.ByteWidth = sizeof(DWORD) * mNumFaces*3; ibd.BindFlags = D3D10_BIND_INDEX_BUFFER; ibd.CPUAccessFlags = 0; ibd.MiscFlags = 0; D3D10_SUBRESOURCE_DATA iinitData; iinitData.pSysMem = &indices[0]; HR(md3dDevice->CreateBuffer(&ibd, &iinitData, &mIB)); } My question pretains to the cosf and sinf. I am formiluar with trigonometry and I understand sin, cosine, and tangent. but I am not formiluar with cosf and sinf and what they do. From looking at this example. they have alot to do with finding a y value.

  • importing pywiiuse to test out

    - by Patrick Burton
    This is probably a simple problem. But I downloaded the pywiiuse library from here and I also downloaded the examples. However when I try to run one of the examples I end up with import issues. I'm not certain I have everything configured properly to run. One error I receive when trying to run example.py: Press 1&2 Traceback (most recent call last): File "example.py", line 73, in <module> wiimotes = wiiuse.init(nmotes) File "/home/thed0ctor/Descargas/wiiuse-0.12/wiiuse/__init__.py", line 309, in init dll = ctypes.cdll.LoadLibrary('libwiiuse.so') File "/usr/lib/python2.7/ctypes/__init__.py", line 431, in LoadLibrary return self._dlltype(name) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/ctypes/__init__.py", line 353, in __init__ self._handle = _dlopen(self._name, mode) OSError: libwiiuse.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I'm really just starting out with this library and don't really see any documentation on how to configure pywiiuse so any help is much appreciated.

  • Box2dx: Usage of World.QueryAABB?

    - by Rosarch
    I'm using Box2dx with C#/XNA. I'm trying to write a function that determines if a body could exist in a given point without colliding with anything: /// <summary> /// Can gameObject exist with start Point without colliding with anything? /// </summary> internal bool IsAvailableArea(GameObjectModel model, Vector2 point) { Vector2 originalPosition = model.Body.Position; model.Body.Position = point; // less risky would be to use a deep clone AABB collisionBox; model.Body.GetFixtureList().GetAABB(out collisionBox); // how is this supposed to work? physicsWorld.QueryAABB(x => true, ref collisionBox); model.Body.Position = originalPosition; return true; } Is there a better way to go about doing this? How is World.QueryAABB supposed to work? Here is an earlier attempt. It is broken; it always returns false. /// <summary> /// Can gameObject exist with start Point without colliding with anything? /// </summary> internal bool IsAvailableArea(GameObjectModel model, Vector2 point) { Vector2 originalPosition = model.Body.Position; model.Body.Position = point; // less risky would be to use a deep clone AABB collisionBox; model.Body.GetFixtureList().GetAABB(out collisionBox); ICollection<GameObjectController> gameObjects = worldQueryEngine.GameObjectsForPredicate(x => ! x.Model.Passable); foreach (GameObjectController controller in gameObjects) { AABB potentialCollidingBox; controller.Model.Body.GetFixtureList().GetAABB(out potentialCollidingBox); if (AABB.TestOverlap(ref collisionBox, ref potentialCollidingBox)) { model.Body.Position = originalPosition; return false; // there is something that will collide at this point } } model.Body.Position = originalPosition; return true; }

  • UDK SettingsScene variable

    - by Ricket
    I am in the process of porting a script from UT3 to UDK. The script is for class ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu extends UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu. I'm getting the following compiler error: C:\UDK\UDK-2010-03\Development\Src\FixIt\Classes\ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu.uc(18) : Error, Bad or missing expression in Call to 'OpenSceneByName', parameter 1 The referenced line is as follows: OpenSceneByName(SettingsScene); Okay, so I figured the OpenSceneByName function changed in UDK. Tracing the path of inheritance all the way up to UDKUIScene.uc, I found the definition: function UIScene OpenSceneByName(string SceneToOpen, bool bSkipAnimation=false, optional delegate<OnSceneActivated> SceneDelegate=None) Assuming SettingsScene is a string, everything looks fine, right? So I figured I would find SettingsScene to make sure it's a string. Well doing a search for "SettingsScene" in all files turned up only one other line; UTGameReplicationInfo.uc line 334: UTPC.OpenUIScene(class'UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu'.default.SettingsScene); But UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu doesn't have a SettingsScene variable in it! Just to check, I changed my line of code to match: OpenSceneByName(class'UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu'.default.SettingsScene); And indeed, I get the following compile error now: C:\UDK\UDK-2010-03\Development\Src\FixIt\Classes\ZOUIFrontEnd_MainMenu.uc(18) : Error, Unknown Property 'SettingsScene' in 'Class UTGame.UTUIFrontEnd_MainMenu' How does UTGameReplicationInfo.uc successfully compile? Where is the SettingsScene variable?

  • Getting a gestureoverlayview

    - by Codejoy
    I have been using some nice tutorials on drawing graphics on my android. I wanted to also add in the cool gesture demo found here: http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/gestures.html That takes these lines of code: GestureOverlayView gestures = (GestureOverlayView) findViewById(R.id.gestures); gestures.addOnGesturePerformedListener(this); This is fine and dandy yet I realize in my demo i'm trying to build using code from "Playing with Graphics in Android". The demos make sense, everything makes sense but I found out by using: setContentView(new Panel(this)); as is required by the Playing With Graphics tutorials, then the findViewById seems to no longer be valid and returns null. At first I was about to post a stupider question as to why this is happening, a quick test of playing with the setContentView made me realize the cause of findViewById returning null, I just do not know how to remedy this issue. Whats the key I am missing here? I realize that the new Panel is doinking some reference up but I am not sure how to make the connection here. THe: R.id.gestures is defined right int he main.xml as: (just like the tutorial) Thanks, Shane p.s. im new here be gentle.

  • A simple way to implement pathfinding using bullet physics - iPhone SDK

    - by Dave
    Hi, I have bullet physics set up and working on the iPhone but now I want to implement some sort of path finding with it. The problem is I have no idea where to start, the level is pretty simple just a lot of pillars that I want the 'bad guys' to navigate around to get to the player character. Do you have any suggestions or are there any tutorials you recommend for pathfinding using this on the iPhone?

  • Adding a JPanel to another JPanel having TableLayout

    - by user253530
    I am trying to develop a map editor in java. My map window receives as a constructor a Map object. From that map object i am able to retrieve the Grid and every item in the grid along with other getters and setters. The problem is that even though the Mapping extends JComponent, when I place it in a panel it is not painted. I have overridden the paint method to satisfy my needs. Here is the code, maybe you could help me. public class MapTest extends JFrame implements ActionListener { private JPanel mainPanel; private JPanel mapPanel; private JPanel minimapPanel; private JPanel relationPanel; private TableLayout tableLayout; private JPanel tile; MapTest(Map map) { mainPanel = (JPanel) getContentPane(); mapPanel = new JPanel(); populateMapPanel(map); mainPanel.add(mapPanel); this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(800, 600)); this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); this.setVisible(true); } private double[][] generateTableLayoutSize(int x, int y, int size) { double panelSize[][] = new double[x][y]; for (int i = 0; i < x; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < y; j++) { panelSize[i][j] = size; } } return panelSize; } private void populateMapPanel(Map map) { double[][] layoutSize = generateTableLayoutSize(map.getMapGrid().getRows(), map.getMapGrid().getColumns(), 50); tableLayout = new TableLayout(layoutSize); for(int i = 0; i < map.getMapGrid().getRows(); i++) { for(int j = 0; j < map.getMapGrid().getColumns(); j++) { tile = new JPanel(); tile.setName(String.valueOf(((Mapping)map.getMapGrid().getItem(i, j)).getCharacter())); tile.add(map.getMapItem(i, j)); String constraint = i + "," + j; mapPanel.add(tile, constraint); } } mapPanel.validate(); mapPanel.repaint(); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { throw new UnsupportedOperationException("Not supported yet."); } } My Mapping Class public class Mapping extends JComponent implements Serializable{ private BufferedImage image; private Character character; //default public Mapping() { super(); this.image = null; this.character = '\u0000'; } //Mapping from image and char public Mapping(BufferedImage image, char character) { super(); this.image = image; this.character = character; } //Mapping from file and char public Mapping(File file, char character) { try { this.image = ImageIO.read(file); this.character = character; } catch (IOException ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } public char getCharacter() { return character; } public void setCharacter(char character) { this.character = character; } public BufferedImage getImage() { return image; } public void setImage(BufferedImage image) { this.image = image; repaint(); } @Override /*Two mappings are consider the same if -they have the same image OR -they have the same character OR -both of the above*/ public boolean equals(Object mapping) { if (this == mapping) { return true; } if (mapping instanceof Mapping) { return true; } //WARNING! equals might not work for images return (this.getImage()).equals(((Mapping) mapping).getImage()) || (this.getCharacter()) == (((Mapping) mapping).getCharacter()); } @Override public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { super.paintComponent(g); //g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, null); g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, this.getWidth(), this.getHeight(), null); } // @Override // public Dimension getPreferredSize() { // if (image == null) { // return new Dimension(10, 10); //instead of 100,100 set any prefered dimentions // } else { // return new Dimension(100, 100);//(image.getWidth(null), image.getHeight(null)); // } // } private void readObject(java.io.ObjectInputStream in) throws IOException, ClassNotFoundException { character = (Character) in.readObject(); image = ImageIO.read(ImageIO.createImageInputStream(in)); } private void writeObject(java.io.ObjectOutputStream out) throws IOException { out.writeObject(character); ImageWriter writer = (ImageWriter) ImageIO.getImageWritersBySuffix("jpg").next(); writer.setOutput(ImageIO.createImageOutputStream(out)); ImageWriteParam param = writer.getDefaultWriteParam(); param.setCompressionMode(ImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT); param.setCompressionQuality(0.85f); writer.write(null, new IIOImage(image, null, null), param); } }

  • OpenGLES mix and match blending options complicated question

    - by DevDevDev
    So I have a background line drawing, black and white. I want to be able to draw over this, keeping the black lines in there, and drawing only where it is white. I can do this by using glBlendFunc(GL_DST_COLOR, GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA); And the black stays black and white gets whatever color I want. However in the white areas, I want to be able to draw some color, pick to another color and then blend. However this doesn't work because the blend function is messed up. So what I was thinking is having a linedrawing framebuffer, and a user-drawing framebuffer. The user draws into the userdrawing framebuffer, with a different blending, and then I switch blending options and draw into the linedrawing framebuffer. But i don't know enough OpenGL to say whether or not this will work or is a stupid idea. Thanks a lot
