• CPU fan turns on and off repeatedly without booting

  My PC has suddenly stopped starting up. On checking with case open, the CPU fan starts running when the power is turned on, but it stops after about 2-3 seconds, restarts again after about 2-3 seconds and the loop is repeated. There is no beep and nothing appears on the screen. On searching the internet, I found there could be several reasons for this. I tried removing hard-disk, CD drive, tightening connections etc but of no avial. I also tried using a new power supply but the response is the same. Where could be the problem and how can it be solved? Thanks in advance.

• STOP 0x7b booting from iSCSI

  Hi, I've a Windows 2008 SBS running. It boots of iSCSI. That setup worked for months until yesterday. I intended to reboot and gained a: STOP 0x0000007b INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE and no idea why. My setup hasn't changed. No new controller, no new or changed iSCSI targets, no new Network Card or IP address changes. I had all Windows Updates on it. Last known good: same STOP. Allow unsigned drivers: same STOP. Safe mode (all variants): same STOP. Mount target from a client: works. Filesystem check fine. I booted of the SBS DVD but in computer repair options my target doesn't appear. When i choose setup the target appears. So, how can i diagnose what's going wrong? Any helpful tools? Any hints? • Dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  Hello everyone, I've just received my Dell Studio 17 laptop, which comes with Windows 7 x64 preinstalled. I'm having quite a hard time installing ubuntu on it. First of all, here is how I partitioned the drive using GPartEd: |==Dell utility partition==|==Dell Recovery partition==|==Windows 7==|[==Ubuntu==|==Data partition==]| Where [] denotes an extended partition. Here are the steps I completed: I used GParted to create this structure, keeping windows 7 installed I booted ubuntu LiveCD, and installed it on the right partition I let it install grub automatically I rebooted intu ubuntu I went back to windows 7, no problems I then rebooted. Grub was gone. I used Super Grub Disk to restore grub, it didn't work. I tried to boot into ubuntu from supergrubdisk, but grub couldn't fint the boot folder I then reinstalled ubuntu, went through the same steps, but there SGD did boot my ubuntu I reverted to the previous version of grub, and installed it on my hard drive It worked, but trying to boot win7 got me the "No MBR, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot" error I used the windows 7 cd to restore the MBR (the auto wizard didn't work, had to rebuild the mbr from command line Now Ubuntu is gone. 7 works fine I read a lot about this, and realized that many people could simply not boot win7 again after encountering this problem. Now I'd like to restore GRUB, but I really won't go through the hassle of doing a full new cycle of installing/reinstalling everything again. Is there a GRUB guru around, to provide me with a detailed guide to not screwing everything up once again? Thanks a lot!

  I am trying to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.18-274 to 2.6.39 for some wireless card drivers. When I boot into the new kernel I get the "Can't find root filesystem / error mounting /dev/root" googling led me to this page http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_kernel_problems#Can.27t_find_root_filesystem_.2F_error_mounting_.2Fdev.2Froot From what I am reading seems to be an issue with a driver for my SATA controller or HD, but I can't find what option I need to add to the kernel. Doing a diff from the old initrd to the new one gives me the following: root-> diff /tmp/kafter /tmp/kbefore 6a7,8 > lib/dm-message.ko > lib/dm-region_hash.ko 8a11 > lib/dm-raid45.ko 13d15 < lib/dm-region-hash.ko 16a19 > lib/dm-mem-cache.ko Do I need any of those? not sure if I would need dm-raid45.ko as I am not running a raid. I have the same SATA and IDE options configured for both kernels so not sure what else to look for, any help is appreciated. • Booting CDs/USB devices after installing Windows 8

  I recently installed Windows 8 on one of my four primary partitions. I had two partitions for Windows 7 (boot and os), one for the Windows System Recovery Environment and the last for Ubuntu. I was often using Ubuntu, but after the installation of Windows 8 Pro I couldn't boot in it because it needed the reinstallation of GRUB2. So I thought to do it by Terminal in a live cd; but when I tried to boot the Live CD, it booted me Windows 8 Pro. This is a problem of UEFI, Secure Boot or my BIOS? It didn't happen never before now. And if it's a problem of Secure Boot, how to disable it? Thanks in advance, Sho.

• Unknown problem causing major computer failure, Booting problem with windows 7, mainly with 0x0000000A

  Where do I begin? OS=Windows 7 I think it all started when I ran an installation file. I suspect it may have been a virus (even though AVG scan didnt pick anything up). The installation failed, computer crashed then restarted. In the middle of the reboot, I get BSOD. Normal boot up doesnt work so I use safe mode. Method 1: Not a problem I thought cos I will do what I normally do and that was to recover from my image file. Unfortunately, my Acronis software cant recover in safe mode. Method 2: I created a bootable disc for the Acronis recovery software. Managed to boot to Acronis and started the recovery from image file. This fail with some error message (did not manage to record). Something to do with not be able to copy to $AVG folder. Method 3: At this stage, assumed it was still a virus causing the problem so decided to format that partition to remove everything and hopefully the virus too. Had a lot of problems trying to bypass the system to allow me to format but (i think- more on this later) I managed to do that. Image was recovered, thought problem was resolved. Tried to boot windows but new error: Boot Manager is missing. Read up on this and managed to copy the Boot Manager from my Laptop's Manufacturer's partition (partition contains factory setup image file). Windows loaded but new BSOD with 0x000000A problem. Method 4: Attempted to reinstall factory settings but this failed cos i suspect by formating the partition, I may have removed the recovery software. Tried to create a bootable dvd of factory setting but machine is so bad it continues to crash. Bootable dvd method failed. Method 5:Spent alot of time reading up on this error, even installed a software to help scan and fix the problem. Scan failed and software required money! Anyway, lots of BSOD with different error message like 0x00000001A and 0x0000000D1. Error message changes with some reboots. Method 6: Found a hotfix from the windows site to fix 0x0000000A problem, great I thought! In safe mode, I cant install the file cos of error:0x8007043c. Tried to then install the fix in normal mode but installation just hangs. Returned to safe mode and followed advice to bypass 0x8007043c by changing the BITS status (read here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181931-error-number-0x8007043c-windows-update.html). However, my machine at this time is so flaky that it hangs everytime i right mouse click the computer icon. I am at my wits end. Ya help or ideas? Cheers

• Regarding partitions for dual-booting Ubuntu with pre-existing Windows 7

  I have zero actual experience with configuring disk partitions and the stuff I have read for the past few hours have been confusing me a bit, so please bear with me. First of all, I'd like to explain what I'm setting to achieve: Windows 7 with: C:\ Windows 7 (pre-existing installation) D:\ Data (Already exists and has files already) Ubuntu 11 - Does not exist yet, but I already have a LiveCD in hand. \root directory for Ubuntu \home on its own partition I plan \swap on its own partition with around 8GB Here is the current situation: I have a single 500 GB hard-disk with Windows 7 x64 installed, and the current partition schemes is as follows: System Reserved: 100 MB (Primary, Active) C: 100 GB - Where Windows 7 is installed (Primary) D: 365 GB - Where my files are located, LOTS of free space (Primary) Now, I would like to shrink my D: drive and create around 40 GB of unallocated disk space for the Ubuntu installation, but here what's confusing me a bit: I'm thinking I would create an extended partition and subdivide it into 3 logical partitions for the Ubuntu setup I had in mind. (If you think my setup is a bad idea, please let me know & why. I also hope you can suggest a better one...) I am aware that I can only have up to 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions with 1 extended parition max. Now, does the System Recovery portion count as one primary partition? I'm really new to these things and it is totally unclear to me. In shrinking my D: drive using Windows 7's Disk Management tool, I would get an unallocated free space which I don't know how to make an extended partition from. It seems like I can only create a primary partition from it, not an extended one. How do I go about it? (I'd also like to note, if it is of any importance, that I am trying to avoid using the option to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, and much rather prefer using the custom install where I can specify which drives I wish to use and stuff. Somehow I feel its safer that way.)

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. • Having problems with Grub2 booting Ubuntu from my External Hard Drive

  I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive but it won't boot on my laptop. what do i do? i did some reading and traced the source of the problem to grub2. Apparently, grub2 doesn't use the device's UUID, and uses the linux directory instead (/dev/sdf2). This means that whenever i plug my E-HDD into a system that has a different number of drives connected to it, i won't be able to boot without editting the boot command. I don't understand it too well but that's what i got from what i read. Is there anyway to fix this?

  I am trying to use gparted to make my ntfs system/boot partition larger. I expanded the disk in ESX, providing an extra 60 GB or so of free space. I confirmed that this free space is available in gparted: However, when I try to go to "Move/Resize" the boot partition, there is no unallocated space for me to allocate. It will let me resize the "extended" (non-boot) partition, which makes me think the issue is that the partitions are not contiguous. If it's not obvious, I am no expert in partitioning/storage so any help is appreciated.

• Creating a partitioned raid1 array for booting a debian squeeze system

  I'd like to have the following raid1 (mirror) setup: /dev/md0 consists of /dev/sda and /dev/sdb I created this raid1 device using mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --auto=yes --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda /dev/sdb This gave a warning about metadata being 1.2 and my system might not boot. I cannot use 0.9 because it restricts the size of the raid to 2TB and I assume grub shipped with latest debian (squeeze) should be able to handle metadata 1.2. So then I created the needed partitions like this: # creating new label (partition table) parted -s /dev/md0 mklabel 'msdos' # creating partitions sfdisk -uM /dev/md0 << EOF 0,4096 ,1024,S ; EOF # making root filesystem mkfs -t ext4 -L boot -m 0 /dev/md0p1 # making swap filesystem mkswap /dev/md0p2 # making data filesystem mkfs -t ext4 -L data /dev/md0p3 Then I mounted the root partition, copied a minimal debian install inside and temporary mounted /dev /proc /sys. Afer this I chrooted to the new root folder and executed: grub-install --no-floppy --recheck /dev/md0 However this fails badly with: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem. Auto-detection of a filesystem of /dev/md0p1 failed. Please report this together with the output of "/usr/sbin/grub-probe --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map --target=fs -v /boot/grub" to I don't think it's a bug in grub (so I didn't report it yet) but a fault of mine. So I really wonder how to properly setup my raid1, everything I tried so far failed.

  Hello, could anyone help me to boot ubuntu-9.04 from usb hard disk? This disk contains /boot primary partition. During ubuntu installation I used "Advanced" button and asked to install GRUB to the /boot partition. Later I checked whether GRUB files are really present in this partition. They are. However, I get stuck while trying to boot. The boot menu ("ubuntu generic version", "ubuntu recovery mode", etc...) is not shown. Instead I am thrown to GRUB minimal bash-like version. I feel at a loss and have no idea why I am pointed to this minimal version. Can anybody prompt me what to do?

  I have a .vmdk (VMWare hard disk) file that I cannot use as the lone disk in a new virtual machine. If I attach it to an existing virtual machine then it works fine. It has Windows Server 2003 on it. When I attempt to boot the new VM it attempts a network boot. EDIT: VMWare Workstation 6.5 I could not find a PXE option in the settings, and I did look in the VM config file for "PXE" but did not find one.

  Just successfully installed and ran windows 8 to go on an external usb hdd. After shutdown and removing the usb hard disk, tried to start my laptop which has a single windows 7 system, but failed to boot and even repair trials didn't succeed. It seems that win 8 affected the strucure of the laptop hard drive which results in corruption in its main win 7 partition. How to fix that and avoid future problems of the same type? thanks.

  After a new SSD install, I have: Original Windows 7 on sdc1 (to be retired) Copy of Windows 7 on sdb2 A Windows system partition on sdb1 Ubuntu 12.04 on sda, /boot and ergo grub is on sda1 Grub is MBR on sda and set to boot from BIOS. I prefer to not change this; grub is great! I've run update-grub (the Ubuntu grub scripts are, at present, unaltered) and grub seems to be correctly configured as all options are available: I can boot any of the 3 Windows partitions and Ubuntu. I also ran the repair tool to get Windows to add both installations to BCD. The problem: choosing particular options seem to have no effect; the old version of Windows on sdc1 always boots. I'm stumped! My thought was to only boot Windows off sdb1, and then let BCD do the rest (present a menu to boot between sdb2 and sdc1, but I can't seem to get BCD to boot sdb2), but this has been unsuccessful.   I have a Lenovo G500. Yesterday it asked me to reboot the system. I did. Now it wont come back on. I have tried everything I read online like taking out the battery and holding the power button in for 20 seconds, then switching on the pc with only the ac adapter plugged in. I still only see the backlight of the pc, nothing else. I also tried to hold in the Fn key and tried all other F keys (F2, F12, etc.) I also pressed that little button next to the power button, but nothing is responding. Please help.

By virtualized, I mean that if you boot this one, any changes made in it will not be committed to the disk. Just like how deepfreeze, returnil, and shadow user works. Is it possible to do that?   I have a question. I run Windows7 on C:\ drive and it is the only operating system. I want to install Windows8 developer installation (iso image), and I have it saved in a new partition I created, which has only this.G:\ I want to boot from this partition G:\ so that I can install Windows 8, but in my boot options I get only Internal Hard Disk, CD ROM, and USB Drive. I don't have a USB drive. How can I boot from G:\ with that iso image ?
