  I was recently given 3 dual opteron 2400 servers with 4GB of RAM and 120GB hard drives. I am interested in setting up something similar to Amazon's EC2 for my own personal web development use. Basically, I would like to spin up instances from an ISO or other disk images and have them available to test and develop software. Are there open source solutions I can use to accomplish this? I am assuming one of the machines will need to act as a controller of some sort for the other two. I use Sun's VirtualBox on my local development machine to virtualize various versions of Microsoft Windows. However, I'm not sure if that's the best tool for what I am trying to achieve. I apologize in advance if this question is to vague to get meaningful responses. I am new to cloud computing and fairly new at server administration.

• Verizon Fivespot firewall

  I have a Verizon Fivespot Wi-Fi router and am having issues connecting to the computer that uses it to get on the internet. I am able to connect to the Fivespot admin pages remotely and I am able to connect to the internet from the computer behind the Fivespot. There are two sections pertinent to this issue, Port Filtering And, Port Forwarding I've tried each individually and both together but cannot access anything through the router except for the admin page. I am trying to connect through SSH to an Ubuntu 10.04 box over wifi. I have called Verizon Tech Support but they were unhelpful, the person essentially read what it says on each screen without any elaboration. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  I am trying to redirect /folder to / using .htaccess but all am I getting is the Apache HTTP Server Test Page. My root directory looks like this: / .htaccess -/folder -/folder2 -/folder3 My .htaccess looks like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/folder/ RewriteRule (.*) /folder/$1 What am I doing wrong? I checked my httpd.conf (I'm running Centos) and the mod_rewrite library is being loaded. As a side note, my server is not a www server, it's simply a virtual machine so it's hostname is centosvm.

  From inside Vi/Vim, I can type: :shell to drop into a shell. Is there any way to detect that I am in a Vi-spawned subshell? The environmental variable SHLVL is 2, but that does not tell me explicitly that I am in a Vi/Vim-spawned subshell. On OS X, the following variables are also set: MYVIMRC, VIMRUNTIME, VIM. How universal are these? Can I count on these being set in any system, if and only if I am in a Vi/Vim subshell? If not, is there any portable, robust and hopefully efficient way to tell that I am in a Vi/Vim subshell? Thanks.

There are numerous load modules and I am wondering which modules I can safely disable for performance and / or security improvements. • Centos OS resource footprint vs Ubuntu package refresh

  I am trying to determine which distro to sink my teeth into. I am new to the Linux world and would like to choose a distro to focus on. I have read that CentOS uses less resources than Ubuntu, which is an issue for me since I am renting a VPS and resource cost is an issue. I have also read that Ubuntu has more up-to-date packages which is a concern for me as I want to use PHP and some packages that have a fair amount of dependencies. I am not using Linux as a desktop OS, rather just as a server for Apache, PHP, PERL, and Java development. What would be the best choice for a server OS? CentOS or Ubuntu? Are the resource requirements that different? Are the packages that different between the two? Thanks.

  We are going to launch a service that will require between 1 and 2 GB for file storage per paid user. I am going to use GridFS for storing files. I am pondering the different options for storing the database. But since I am unexperienced at deployment and it is my first time with Mongodb I need your experience. Criteria: I want to spend my time developing my core business, that is, my own application. I am a Ruby on Rails developer. I do not like to mess with server configuration. Hence, I would like a fully managed hosting solution. But I would like to know about any other option, if you think it is worth it. It should be able to scale. Cloud style. Pay as you go. The lower the price, the better. So far I known of these services: https://mongohq.com/pricing https://mongomachine.com/pricing https://mongolab.com/about/pricing/ http://cloudcontrol.com/add-ons/mongodb/ And they seem to be OK for common needs, that is no file storage. But I am going to use GridFS, so the size matters. These services seems to scale, in price, quite poorly. MongoHQ: The larger plan max storage is 20 GB. Seems like a very little storage, for GridFS. MongoMachine: Flat price, 2.5$ per GB. I didn't found the limit. Seems like a good price, comparing the others. MongoLab: 3.984 GB max, which I don't think I will hit, so perfect. 8$ per GB, quite costly. CloudControl: The larger plan is 20 Gb. The custom service starts at 250€ plus some unspecified charge per GB. What is your experience with these services? Any downtimes? Other possibilities?

  Hello all, I am looking for a free smtp server. I am currently using Free SMTP Server http://www.softstack.com/freesmtp.html This software works great other than the fact that it can only send 10 messages a day. This is a bit of a problem seeing that the software I am writing needs to send a message every half hour. Anyone knows of a good piece of software that does the same thing, but does not limit the amount of messages that can be sent in a day?   I am running a headless server on Ubuntu 10.x. I am running Apache 2.2. I am writing a fastcgi application for deployment on the server. I remember reading a while back (I could be wrong) that running CGI (and by implication fastcgi) on a server, can provide 'backdoors' for potential attackers - or at the very least, could compromise the server if certain security measurements are not taken. My questions are: what are the security 'gotcha's that I have to be aware of if I am enabling mod_fastcgi on my Apache server? I want to run the fastcgi as a specific user (with restricted access) how do I do this?

  I am trying to connect to mysql server which is installed on my home pc from another pc. I allowed all connection in mysql configuration. There's no firewall blocking on the pc I am trying to connect from. I used the command- mysql -h Some.Host.IP -u SomeUser -p SomePassword I am getting- ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'Some.Host.IP' (10060) I can connect through php!! What's the problem? How do I solve it?

• Finding BCC in Internet mail headers

  I am running Outlook 2010 connected to an Exchange 2003 server. Often times, the spam that I received is sent to "undisclosed-recipients". I'm guessing that's because my email address (or an email address for a group I am part of) is in the BCC field. Is there a way to find out what BCC address was used to reach me? I looked at the Internet Headers for the message, but am not seeing "Envelope-to", described in a similar question.

• web services access not being reached thru the web browser [closed]

  I am trying to reference my .asmx webservices in .NET but my server is not exposed to the internet. When I put on the following address I get the message mentioned below. What's the reason for not being able to see the directory? Am I missing something in my IIS configuraction? Am I missing anything in my permissions? Just as reference I have other folders with webservices and I have the same issue. When I login to the server I am doing it with my windows user and password (I am using windows authentication). It's necessary to mention that when I put the URL I am getting a popup screen to put in my userid and password but it seems that's not able to validate since keeps asking me a couple of times.   I am new to both Chef and Ruby and I am implementing some scripts to learn them. Now I am facing the problem of how to organize my code: I have created a class in the library directory and I have used a custom namespace to maintain order. EP::MyTools.copy_file "/etc", "passwd" print_something works fine, but with copy_file I get this error: undefined method `cookbook_file' for Chef::Recipe::EP::FileTools:Class It's clear to me that I don't know how to create libraries in Chef or I don't know some basic assumptions. Can anyone help me, please? I am looking for a solution of this problem (organize my code, libraries, use resources in classes) or, better, a good Chef documentation as I find the documentation very deficient in clarity and disorganized so that research through it is a pain.

• When RDP as a Domain User, Smart Card Requested

  My W8 machine is connected to domain zen. If I rdp to the W8 machine, I can log in as a local user without problems. If I try to log in as a domain user, I am prompted for a smart card instead of a password. Any ideas why? Note that Interactive login: require smart card is disabled in group policy: And here is the output from rsop.msc: Some additional information on this one. If my connecting machine is on the same domain/network as the W8 machine, then I am prompted for a password as usual. If the machine is remote, on a different domain, then I am prompted for a smart card. In addition, the machine I am connecting from that gets the smartcard prompt is an XP box. I haven't isolated exactly which of these factors triggers the different response.

• IIS + PHP + Page with lots of images = Intermittent 403 errors

  I am using an up-to-date Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, running IIS 7.5 and PHP 5.3.6/FastCGI On PHP pages with lots of images (60+), some of the images fail to load It is not always the same images-- on each page refresh an image that worked previously may not load, while an image that did not now does Looking at the Net tab in Firebug reveals that the failing image requests are 403 errors All of the images are located on the server in question, and the images directory has the correct permissions I believe this problem is the result of a limit on requests All of my attempts at researching this problem point to maxConnections setting in IIS, yet mine is set at the highest/default of 4294967295 (maxBandwidth too) I am also running a ColdFusion site on the same IIS installation, and it does not suffer from 403's on pages with lots of images I am left thinking that there is another connection limit (in PHP or FastCGI?) overriding the IIS connection limit I don't see anything that looks like a request limit in the php.ini, what am I missing? Any help would be appreciated, thank you

• Percona system tables corrupted.

  I am having problems setting up mysql replication with a percona as server. accidentally, took a full dump from mysql and restored it on percona and then started,the replication. now when i stop slave and start slave, i am getting the error "[ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './s5-bin.000003' (relay_log_pos 2029993) 110103 9:15:59 [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization " But show local variables shows the relay_log variable as set in the cnf file.. But the relay-log variable is set to slave-relay-bin alright. I am able to start mysql as a service. But mysqld_safe fails with error "110103 9:19:39 [ERROR] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Can't create/write to file '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid' (Errcode: 2) 110103 9:19:39 [ERROR] Can't start server: can't create PID file: No such file or directory " Am now lost as to what is the problem.

• Keyboard shortcut / navigation references

  I use the mouse much too freely, and my wrists are not thanking me for it. I have been meaning to try and use the keyboard more as my sole means of navigating Windows, but I am having trouble sticking with it because when I need to do something and I cannot find the right shortcut, I grab the mouse and forget to let go of it again. Personally, the main software that I need keyboard reference sheets for would be: Firefox Thunderbird Visual Studio Windows itself But I would encourage more general inclusion of shortcut references in the answers in case anyone else tries to make the same transition I am attempting ;) What I am looking for is reference material that is as comprehensive as possible so that over time I can hopefully learn to do everything with the keyboard and spare my wrists. Bonus points for references that can be printed in a reasonable size so I can keep them next to my machine in hardcopy. I know there is an answer for Windows already: Is there a definitive reference for Windows shortcuts keys?, but I am leaving it in my question in case anyone has a better printable alternative.

  I just compiled nginx v1.2.3 from source on a CentOS 6.3 server and am trying to use the ssl_prefer_server_ciphers directive, but I am getting an error nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "ssl_prefer_serfver_cipers" in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/application:5 I am not seeing anywhere that this directive depends on any specific versions of other libraries, or even specific versions of nginx. What could I be doing wrong here?
