• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution. • Changing keyboard layout for login screen on Mac OS X

  I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion. Basically I am a developer and practiced coding with DVORAK keyboards. So I changed my keyboard layout to DVORAK and I'm working with it. I'm using the admin user on my Mac Mini. When I restart my computer, during login, the layout is changed to QWERTY and it's hard to type the password. It happens only for the admin user though. If I create the another user and set the layout as DVORAK and restart, that user has the DVORAK keyboard for login. Note: I have a QWERTY keyboard, I'm only changing the layout in the keyboard preferences. So, to summarize, how can I get the DVORAK keyboard layout for the admin login as well?

• Make iMovie text overlay remain on screen after in-transition

  My idea of a text overlay has the following timeline: In-transition Static display Out-transition For this project, I am particularly fond of iMovie's Organic Main text overlay. I want it to display for an extended period. The problem is, when I set its display time for 3:20 (minutes:seconds), it performs its transition over the whole period. The text would won't be fully seen until the next 3 minutes. This is what I want: In-transition for 1 second Static display for 3:18 minutes Out-transition for 1 second Is that possible with iMovie?

• Linux boot - stop the kernel switching to a new framebuffer mode clearing output

  I'm working on an embedded system (based onUbuntu 12.04 LTS) and I'm customizing its kernel. I'm having some problem with upstart, mountall and plymouth. Nothing unsolvable I suppose, but the real problem is that I can't diagnose properly what's going on because the kernel (or maybe plymouth) changes the video mode in the middle of the boot process. This completely wipes entire lines of log and prevents any debugging of kernel misconfigurations. • keyboard works in the BIOS(except a), but not at the password screen(win 7, 64bit)

  The computer is a acer aspire 7720g laptop. When windows want me to input my password, the only keys working is caps lock, the numpad and the m key(and the m key works like a combined m and enter key). I did spill some water on the keyboard yesterday but the same thing happens with usb keyboards. I disabled the quick boot in the bios, making it go through every test at bootup, which resulted in continous beeping from the computer. Anyone know how to solve this?

• krenew command not working : Permission Denied

  I am using a Linux server to perform my simulations. The login and the file-system of the server are protected using kerberos. The file-system is supported using NFS. Since my simulations take a lot of time to run, my ssh sessions used to hang regularly. So, I have started running my simulations in byobu (similar to screen). In order to make sure that my kerberos session remains active, I am using the krenew command. I have entered the following command in my .bash_profile file. (I am sure that it is called for every login) killall -9 krenew 2> /dev/null krenew -b -t -K 10 So everytime I ssh to the server, I kill the existing krenew command. Then, I spawn a new krenew command -b (which runs in background), -t (I forgot why I was using this option !), and -K 10 (It must run after every 10 minutes and refresh the kerberos cache). When I run the simulations, It runs for 14 hours and then suddenly, I am getting error for reading file Permission Denied Is the command that I am running incorrect ??

• Xubuntu stuck after login

  How can I debug an issue with Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) which just waits idle after a login for about 30 seconds? The login screen is delayed correctly. After login, I get my desktop background, but no panels or auto-starting apps. It doesn't seem to be an authentication/pam issue, because I can login without delay at the console while the graphical session is still stuck. There's no disk or cpu activity and no obvious respawning of any process when I look at htop. There's nothing obviously wrong in .xsession-errors. Most interesting errors: openConnection: connect: No such file or directory cannot connect to brltty at :0 WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-wFn4VR/pkcs11: No such file or directory ... • High resolution on small screen

  I just purchased a new ultrabook (Asus UX32VD). Awesome laptop, but I am having trouble using it with its native resolution being 1920 x 1080. Text is so small and hard to read. I have increased the text size in the display options but it don't really improve it for all scenarios, especially in webpages. I am wondering if there is a possible solution to this? Simply lowering the resolution makes everything look pixelated.

• In Windows 7, why won't my display stay off despite the power settings saying it should?

  I'm completely stumped by this. My simple use case is that when I'm in bed, I use a cordless mouse to browse the web, watch videos, etc. - the monitor is across the room. When I'm going to sleep, I want to shut the monitor off. I also want to be able to turn it back on in the morning. I just want to turn the monitor off and on using only the mouse. I thought of creating a power setting that turned the monitor off asap (the shortest amount of time is one minute; that's fine). I have one that does this. It worked great for almost a year on my old XP machine, and for about four months on my new Windows 7 laptop (which I essentially use as a desktop). All of a sudden a couple weeks ago, it just stopped working - my monitor won't turn off on its own anymore. Here are the settings: I tried other options. Based on the advice here I tried nircmd. This seemed great. I created a shortcut with the command line: "C:\Program Files\nircmd\nircmd.exe" cmdwait 1000 monitor off I click this, and in one second the monitor goes off. However about five seconds later it turns back on, and I've been extra careful to make sure the mouse isn't moving. I have no idea what's going on. Based on both of these things, my only guess is that something could be running in the background which somehow makes the computer think it's in use. I've tried killing as many programs as possible but I still get the same behavior. Any advice? I'm mainly curious about how to debug, but am open to other suggestions about turning the monitor off and on with just the mouse as well.

• VMware Server 2.0 in Linux loads a blank screen at the login page

  I'm using VMware Server 2.0.1-156745.i386 for Linux on Ubuntu 8.10. When I run "vmware", it brings up what is supposed to be the login page in a browser, but it just loads a blank page. This is the address: https://127.0.0.1:8333/ui/ Sometimes the login page comes back if you reload it a bunch of times, but this time it won't. Doing this also doesn't help: /etc/init.d/vmware restart Does anyone know why this happens, and how to fix it?

• Shortcut To Full Screen App In Lion

  I postponed getting OSX Lion for as long as I possibly could. Now that I have it, I'm having lots of difficulties getting it to perform how I want. On Snow Leopard my typical setup for working was 4 spaces. I'd keep a Windows VM open on Space #4 full-screened, a Linux open on space #3, and I'd do other stuff on spaces #1 and #2. My keyboard shortcut allowed me to switch between my Windows work (Command + 4) to my Linux work (Command + 3) very quickly, and without the need for my hands to leave the keyboard (or effectively to even quit typing). Productivity was good. I see that on Lion a full-screened VM (and yes, they need to be full screened, Fusion's Unity won't cut it for what I need to do) is its own separate Desktop. I have set up 4 desktops and made my keyboard shortcuts to move between them Command + # just as before. But how do I get my full-screened VM to be one of those already existing desktops? Or, rather, how do I make a short-cut for the full-screened app?

  Firefox 8.0.1 ALL the on-sceen buttons on ALL sites have disappeared. I'm not talking about the toolbar buttons, I'm talking about buttons like NEXT and BACK and CONTINUE and PAY and GO TO BASKET and CONTACT US that should appear in varous parts of the screenh. Sometimes they are still visable (and clickable) as text, but in other cases they have disappeared entirely, although a click symbol still appears if you can guess where they are and mouse over them.

  My system is windows 8 pro rtm x64. Recently my system started hanging frequently. Nothing but the restart button works.   I'm looking specifically for a convenient way to locally archive posts from this and other similar sites. I'd like to separate the question itself from the answers, or maybe crop the question and store it, keeping the page title. Obviously I don't need to store the menu or the various other site interface chrome. The best way to do this would seem to be to associate an XSLT template with a match on the URL and use that template to pull the various relevant informations and format them. My two-part question: Is there a tool specifically built for this task? I.E. something that takes a URL and checks it against a map of path-matching expressions to templates, and outputs the result of applying the template to that resource? xmlto seems to be most of the way there, and could probably just be called from a script that does the pattern-matching, but something already integrated would be more convenient. Is such a URL_pattern-to-XSLT_template map publicly available somewhere? Question 2.5: Is it legal to do this with sites like this one that have public licenses on their content?

• How to stop Vista from auto changing video resolution?

  I have new Acer Aspire Revo R3600 computer with Vista pre-installed. The computer has NVidia video adapter. While connecting 17" LCD monitor (LG L1742S) via VGA cable it works fine, and I can change the resolution of the display from max 1920*1024 down to some other value, and after reboot the settings are restored correctly. But when I'm connecting bigger full HD 1920*1080 display (LG E2250) via VGA cable then every boot I have the same problem: I see boot progress window, then I see MS logo, then I see welcome screen then I start to see desktop and suddenly monitor switch off and show me the message about unsupported frequency of input signal As I understand Vista tries to auto-change resolution and sets wrong parameters. I've tried to boot into safe mode and into low-resolution mode, every time I have the same problem: Vista boot-up and suddenly monitor stops working. I've tried to connect this monitor to notebook with Windows XP and has no problem to work with this display on its native resolution. How can I disable this display resolution auto-changer in Vista? Or maybe there is another workaround?

  The other day, about two or three ago, I was simply typing in a Microsoft Word document when my screen froze. After a few moments, it went black...I thought it was my vid hardware (dual nVidia 9800 GTs). Anyway, I did a hard reboot, and chose to Start Normally. The system blue screened telling me there was a failure in the Memory Manager. So then I thought maybe a RAM failure or vid memory failure. I attempted reboot again, this time I got presented with the option to repair windows...so I went with that. The repair app finished and did an auto reboot. This time I got all the way back to my desktop where in a matter of a about 30 seconds, the system blue screened again and pointed to the Memory Manager as the area of cause. Again I rebooted, the repair thingy came up again and I allowed it to do its thing. Deciding if the same failure occured I'd begin pulling hardware to see at what point I may have found the possibly defective party. However, this time it rebooted, I got back to desktop and no crash. All looked well, untill I looked at the baloon messages when hovering over the System Bar icons. Also when I opened any of my browsers, the tabs had no text, and any window that pops up that has regular buttons (OK, Cancel, etc., etc.) looks weird. The buttons are really really long and have no text. So it seems like the system is once again running smoothly, however something has gotten corrupted.. something relating to drawing basic windows user interface objects. Help...all ideas are respected and appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

• Windows 7 64 bit will hesitate and the screen will go black

  I am running windows 7 64 bit with 2 monitors. Several time a day the system will freeze up for about 5 seconds and the screens will go black. After the 5 seconds are up, the system continues to function properly. I get no error messages that pop up and all the applications I am running handle it fine. All the devices appear fine, my drivers are up to date and nothing is jumping out at me in event viewer. What are the next troubleshooting steps I can take?

  Does anyone know a kind of software that allows controlling of other computer, but the server can configure permission control? For example, the server can define five users, one of them can control, but the other four of them can only view. Also, file transfer support is required. I've tried TightVNC, it works fine with anything else, but it just does not support user permission control. RAdmin can serve this job, but I wish to find some software which is free. Thank you!

  Does anyone know of any software/hardware configuration that will allow you to preview/view the contents multiple monitors on one monitor? Let's pretend: I have two monitors hooked up to one pc, Monitor A and Monitor B. The monitors are not near each other. I'd like to be able to preview/see what's displaying on Monitor B on Monitor A I haven't been able to find much about this, but I imagine it may not currently be possible to access/emulate video output going out of a video port in software. However, wouldn't it be possible to capture display data generated by the OS kernel or data getting passed down to the display adapter driver?

• How do I shutdown 12.10 when ACPI is set to OFF?

  I recently installed 12.04 on an HP Spectre XT ultrabook. I installed 12.04 from a USB. When the install was complete, and the computer restarted, I got a blank screen. After some searching, I found that I had to choose "acpi=off" during the installation, which now shows up in the grub screen. Once I was on 12.04, I upgraded to 12.10. The issue now is that when I hit shutdown, the computer hangs on a purple shutdown screen. Usually, at this point, I press the power button on the machine to completely power off the machine. I am new to ubuntu, and would appreciate the help. Thanks.
