• Can a power loss break an hard disk?

  Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible... • Creating disk snapshots in Windows 7

  Does anyone know of a command or tool to create disk snapshots on Windows 7 (client SKU)? I see vssadmin.exe has a "create shadow" option, but that's available only on server SKUs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788055(v=ws.10).aspx I've a backup tool that replicates changes (creations, modifications and deletions to files and directories) since last backup, to my backup volume. Before each time this happens I want to create a persistent snapshot on my backup volume. I could then mount previous snapshots to view previous backups achieving a behavior similar to that of TimeMachine in OS X. • How to properly shrink a disk size of a server that is being backed up off-site?

  We have a Virtual machine (lets call this one source) that is being hosted locally with a 1TB disk space (that's how big the virtual disk is) and it has been replicated remotely via Veeam to an off-site server (lets call this clone). However, there has been some server configuration changes that has made source not require as much disk space. I am contemplating shrinking the disk size of source, or using the standalone converter to create a new image with a much smaller disk size requirement (about 300GB). The reason behind this is to lessen the time required for the "Discovering replica VM" step during the replication process. My question is what happens to clone when the replication job is run? Do I need to redo the replication/set up a new backup to create an initial seed for source? Will the job automatically pick up that the disk size has shank and adjust the disk size of clone appropriately? What is the best method for accomplishing this?

What do I do now I'm hoping that I can replace that faulty disk with a new hard drive and that the RAID can rebuild itself. (using Intel Matrix Storage Console) Is this possible? Though I doubt it. • Computer doesn't boot, continuously restarts; possible disk error

  I have shut down my computer two hours ago. When I open my computer it started restarting itself after showing the POST screen. I can open my computer with a Ubuntu Live CD or Windows installation CD. I can also open and boot my computer with my second drive, so I think something is wrong with my primary hard drive. Do you have any idea what the problem might be and how can I fix it? I am using an HP DV9087EA laptop and my primary disk is a WD500GB. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on my drive.

  I am a web developer. I have not much experience in hardware. For this reason, I use managed servers. This morning, one of the drives in our setup failed. However, the full site went down. I asked my web host what happened and he replied that the hard disk failed in such a way that the RAID controller couldn't work properly. The array was set up as RAID 4. Do you guys ever seen that before? Is it possible? Thanks for any help on this guys. I need to know if my web host is honest with me.

• Email server - Disk quota sizes - suggestions?

  Working out a new server for an agency of 200 Employees - with approx 240 email accounts. Internally I'm arguing with myself over the amount of drive space to allocate to each user for the disk quota, I'm just looking for suggestions. Once i have a quota size decided, it will define the solution for storage. I've had everything from 4 GB per account ( which i feel is being generous ) down to 500 Mb ( with is rather restrictive in today's day and age. ) Thing is 4 GB per acocunt is just under 1 TB of allocated storage for email alone. Does anyone follow a "rule of thumb" or have thoughts on this? thanks in advance

• I would like to burn a file to a virtual dvd.

  Hi, a program I am using tracks down my diskdrives and offers to write a dvd image to them. I would like to be able to write this image on HD in stead of on disk, but I have no option to browse the file system. Therefore I would like a virtual dvd disk, that is in fact a folder, but that is recognized by the app. as a real, empty dvd. I have tried MagicDisk, but it doesn't seem to offer the ability to couple an emulated disk drive to a folder...

• Windows 7 - cannot access my own external disk

  I use Windows 7 Home Premium and external USB disk with NTFS partition. I cannot write-access the my own files on it, even as a member of Admnistrators group! Is there any way how to go around this permission checking, without actually writing some permission information to every folder on it? I have 3 external disks (up to 1TB), and I have thousands hundreds of files on each!!! Doing some permission change, that will actually go recursivelly through all folders on all my disks is plain brain damage!! 1) Is there any way how to change it somehow globally? (like mount options...) .. Or how to go around this annoying permission checking? It was working in Win XP normally! 2) if not, and I must do the recursive operation on all folders, how to do it PERMANENTLY, so that I don't need to do it again on another Windows 7 computer!

• Disk Cleanup on Server 2008 R2 is ineffective

  I have a user profile with ~2.9GB of Error Reports backed up in the ReportQueue folder (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue). Running DiskCleanup as the administrator does not detect these files and therefore does not clean them up. However, running the utility as the user shows an even larger amount (12.4GB!) of error reporting files. As seen below: The problem is that after running the cleanup utility the disk spaced used does not decrease by anywhere near 12.4GB and running the utility again detects the same 12.4GB of files. What is the problem here? Alternatively, can I manually delete the files in the ReportQueue folder?

• VPS showing low disk space despite there is nothing major on it

  Hello experts, On my VPS server I was trying to see the used disk space and when I open My Computer it shows 17.9 GB free out of 39.8 GB it means that 21.9 GB space is used. However, when I select all files and folders from C: and try to see the total size, it just count approximately 11 GB. The difference is around 10 GB. Where is this 10 GB going if I have not stored anything else here? I asked above question from my VPS provider and he responded below Check hidden files/system files/etc. This is default windows OS and its utilization and not specific to setup. If you want specifics of usage, you can go ahead and get in touch with Microsoft support team and they'll provide you with exact specification of the same. I am sure that Windows OS must not be taking up 10 GB space for hidden files and folders. My VPS has Windows Server 2008 R2 installed. Can anyone help me in this on who is right?

• recommendations for disk -> usb backup software

  Recently I lost a tape drive and rather than repair the unit I decided that backups to usb external drives would be cheaper. In the past I used NTBackup and figured that the new server 2008 R2 backup wbadmin utility would be able to meet my needs. It does not. I am looking for recommendations for another utility that i can use. My requirements are: -backup local disk in addition to files on a network share -scheduled task integration (or some gui options to manage schedule) -non-incremental backup Basically I could do this all with WBAdmin if it just supported network shares. I saw some links that described attaching a vhd pointed to a network share but I am trying to avoid hacks like that. If i'm going to do all that trouble I'd just as well manually copy the directories over myself. If anyone has any software suggestions that might make this task easier for me let me know please. I am considering BackupAssist but can only find a few reviews here and there for it.

• External hard disk not showing up as removable media

  Windows 7 Pro x64, my external hard drive is a Western Digital Carviar Black. The hard drive is connected via USB (tried all my 2.0 and 3.0 ob my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7) but once I initialized it in the "disk management" (or whatever the proper term is; I'm using a German edition of Windows) I have to assign it a manual drive letter. Otherwise it doesn't show up. I'm confused because usually externally connected drives (be it USB sticks or real hard disks) just show up as "Removable media", but this one doesn't. Is this OK/expected? Will there be troubles when I go to another Windows computer? I formatted the drive with quick format and NTFS. I changed the permissions to have read/write for "Everyone" on that drive. thanks

• Reset disk does not work for different model of computer

  I've created a reset USB disk on my HP computer, with Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, and it works fine. However, it does not work for Acer computers (notebooks too), so what is the problem here? I've have created it for the same user named user, and the password is exactly the same as well. Is it possible to show the language bar with a keyboard shortcut at the logon screen in Windows 7? I know I can do it through Control Panel, but I can't log into the system. When I click Reset Passwword, it shows me my USB flash drive and says that the password hint is on this USB drive. Then I click Next and type the new passwword, then confirm this new password, but an error dialog is shown. It says that an error occured when trying to change the password for this user-

• Preload Images with javascript

  Here is my preload script: <script type="text/javascript"> Image_1 = new Image(1,1); Image_1.src = "images/sprites.png"; </script> And it works fine. I can see in the headers the image loading. Here's my question. Even though I have preloaded sprites.png, I notice that when I go to a page on my site that simply displays that entire image, the headers tell me my browser is requesting the server to send the image again. I'm hoping to not sound too naive. But, why would the browser request the image when I preloaded it earlier? Are there other reasons the browser would need to re-request? Also, I put the dimensions as Image(1,1). Sometimes I don't know the dimensions, as that image gets updated from time to time. Maybe that's a reason?

• No events are fired from an imagebrush via ImageOpened/ImageFailed

  A canvas is received from the server, and an image brush is extracted from the canvas via searching for a bunch of pathes. In summary, Canvas - Path - Path.Fill - ImageBrush. • Trying to generate proportionally cropped thumbnails at a fixed width/height with PHP GD

  I'm trying to create a Thumbnail Generator in PHP with GD that will take an image and reduce it to a fixed width/height. The square it takes from the original image (based on my fixed width/height) will come from the center of the image to give a proportionally correct thumbnail. It seems simple, in theory, to get the height/width of the image and then calculate the offset based on my fixed width/height to get the thumbnail. But I can't seem to think of a way to code it :/ Also, how would I go about resizing the image before pulling out the center square? So the thumbnail contains a detailed image of the original rather than some zoomed in graphic?

• External USB Drive

  I have a server that I hooked up an external USB drive. It was formatted in windows and has files on it already. I'm new to Ubuntu so please be patient... I have two questions: Will Ubuntu see the drive since it was formatted in windows? How do I mount this drive or rather, how do I know it's seen by Ubuntu? Thanks! • Annotate source code with diagrams as comments

  I write a lot of (primarily c++ and javascript) code that touches upon computational geometry and graphics and those kinds of topics, so I have found that visual diagrams have been an indispensable part of the process of solving problems. I have determined just now that "oh, wouldn't it just be fantastic if I could somehow attach a hand-drawn diagram to a piece of code as a comment", and this would allow me to come back to something I worked on, days, weeks, months earlier and far more quickly re-grok my algorithms. As a visual learner, I feel like this has the potential to improve my productivity with almost every type of programming because simple diagrams can help with understanding and reasoning about any type of non-trivial data structure. Graphs for example. During graph theory class at university I had only ever been able to truly comprehend the graph relationships that I could actually draw diagrammatical representations of. So... No IDE to my knowledge lets you save a picture as a comment to code. My thinking was that I or someone else could come up with some reasonably easy-to-use tool that can convert an image into a base64 binary string which I can then insert into my code. If the conversion/insertion process can be streamlined enough it would allow a far better connection between the diagram and the actual code, so I no longer need to chronographically search through my notebooks. Even more awesome: plugins for the IDEs to automatically parse out and display the image. There is absolutely nothing difficult about this from a theoretical point of view. My guess is that it would take some extra time for me to actually figure out how to extend my favorite IDEs and maintain these plugins, so I'd be totally happy with a sort of code post-processor which would do the same parsing out and rendering of the images and show them side by side with the code, inside of a browser or something. Since I'm a javascript programmer by trade. What do people think? Would anyone pay for this? I would.

• Stereo images rectification and disparity: which algorithms?

  I'm trying to figure out what are currently the two most efficent algorithms that permit, starting from a L/R pair of stereo images created using a traditional camera (so affected by some epipolar lines misalignment), to produce a pair of adjusted images plus their depth information by looking at their disparity. Actually I've found lots of papers about these two methods, like: "Computing Rectifying Homographies for Stereo Vision" (Zhang - seems one of the best for rectification only) "Three-step image recti?cation" (Monasse) "Rectification and Disparity" (slideshow by Navab) "A fast area-based stereo matching algorithm" (Di Stefano - seems a bit inaccurate) "Computing Visual Correspondence with Occlusions via Graph Cuts" (Kolmogorov - this one produces a very good disparity map, with also occlusion informations, but is it efficient?) "Dense Disparity Map Estimation Respecting Image Discontinuities" (Alvarez - toooo long for a first review) Anyone could please give me some advices for orienting into this wide topic? What kind of algorithm/method should I treat first, considering that I'll work on a very simple input: a pair of left and right images and nothing else, no more information (some papers are based on additional, pre-taken, calibration infos)? Speaking about working implementations, the only interesting results I've seen so far belongs to this piece of software, but only for automatic rectification, not disparity: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/index.html I tried the "auto-adjustment" feature and seems really effective. (24bpp/32bpp, compressed/raw, etc) I'm not working with 3D graphics or DirectX / OpenGL rendering and so I don't need to use graphics card compatible bitmap formats. My questions: What is the "usual" or "normal" way to store bitmaps in memory? (in C++ engines/projects?) How to store bitmaps for high-performance algorithms, such that read/write times are the fastest? (fixed array? with/without padding? 24-bpp or 32-bpp?) How to store bitmaps for applications handling a lot of bitmap data, to minimize memory usage? (JPEG? or a faster [de]compression algorithm?) Some possible methods: Use a fixed packed 24-bpp or 32-bpp int[] array and simply access pixels using pointer access, all pixels are allocated in one continuous memory chunk (could be 1-10 MB) Use a form of "sparse" data storage so each line of the bitmap is allocated separately, reusing more memory and requiring smaller contiguous memory segments Store bitmaps in its compressed form (PNG, JPG, GIF, etc) and unpack only when its needed, reducing the amount of memory used. • How do I image my hard drive for backup? Or do I just need to backup the files?

  I have never imaged a hard drive, so I don't know what software to use or how to prepare my system for imaging. Is this the best way to backup? In the past, I've always just kept a copy of my important files on an external drive and in Gmail or DropBox for smaller stuff, but it would be nice to just take one image and restore from that if something ever goes wrong. Thanks for the help. EDIT: I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the OS. I would like to do this for my home and work computers, which are Vista and XP respectively. And actually I'm about to upgrade to Windows 7 at home, so details on that would be appreciated too.
