• Passing extended parameter into Sql 2008 connection string

  Hi, I have a need to support extensive auditing capabilities for a system backing into Sql Server 2008. Since I plan to use LINQ (with no Stored Procs), the database would be a clean, zero contact data repository. However, I need to pratically record a snapshot of every change that happens in the db. So, I thought I should use triggers. But then, I need a user id for the particular user (not the connection string user id) to flow through into the database. In oracle, I should have been able to set up a PROXY USER and the trigger would be able to pick that up. Last I checked, there was no proxy user concept in Sql Server. Does anyone know if there's any extender property I can use to flow through my authenticated user name? ps: I don't mind the impact on connection pooling (if any). Thanks. P

• How do I send data from Java to Flash locally?

  I have a website with a Java applet and a Flash application. I want the Java applet to send data to the Flash application locally. What's the best way to do this? The data I want to send are potentially large images (possibly up to 1MB in size). This means sending a base64 string to javascript and then to Flash would probably be too cumbersome. I don't want to have to contact external servers or anything; all of it should be possible locally and offline. Is there some easy way to just send this sort of data around? If I saved the file locally first, Flash wouldn't be able to access that, would it?

• Need to show pages without logging in (asp.net)

  Hello friends, I am using Every thing works fine except that, there are some pages like About Us, Contact Us, Privacy Policy etc, which do not need to login to view them. In my case i need to login to view all pages. I want these common pages to be viewable without having to log on.   I'm having trouble locating BlackBerry techical specifications and their website is a mess. They also don't have a number that I can use to easily contact them. This isn't exactly a coding question, but what does the BlackBerry audio API look like, and where can I get technical specifications on audio? Specifically, I'm trying to find out more information on Audio-In, specifically, through the Mic-In on the 3.5 mm jack. Unfortunately, before I can proceed, I need to know such things like sampling rate, data width, etc. Direction to the right resource or if you know off of the top of your head is appreciated.

  Hi, I have been using php from some time and I have noticed that it takes a long time to create a form with validation using php. Are there any scripts or IDE wizards which can assist a programmer to create php forms quickly and also give the programmer flexibility to customize the form easily? I found some webservices which provide such services but they are mostly oriented towards non-programmers and the forms they generate are not easily customizable and do not support all kinds of functionalities. • Retrieving data from database. Retrieve only when needed or get everything?

  I have a simple application to store Contacts. This application uses a simple relational database to store Contact information, like Name, Address and other data fields. While designing it, I question came to my mind: When designing programs that uses databases, should I retrieve all database records and store them in objects in my program, so I have a very fast performance or I should always gather data only when required? Of course, retrieving all data can only be done if it`s not too many, but do you use this approach when you make sure that the database will be small (< 300 records for example)? I have designed once a similar application that fetches data only when needed, but that was slow (using a Access database). Thanks for all help.

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • Question about finding third party website APIs.

  I have a client that works with several well established 3rd party sites to sell his product (in this case hotel rooms, but the question is more general). Every time he gets a reservation he has to go to each site and manually make changes. I've done a quick search to see if there are APIs or any developer resources for these sites but have come up with nothing. I've emailed his contacts for each site but have yet to receive a response. I don't have a lot of experience working with third party sites like this but in the past when I've looked for APIs I usually come up empty handed. Are these types of APIs rare or am I just looking in the wrong places? It seems like an obvious thing to have for a company that has an affiliate program. Any suggestions on where to look for APIs or am I at the mercy of my "contact"?

• Can I Use ASP.NET Wizard Control to Insert Data into Multiple Tables?

  Hello All, I have an ASP.NET 3.5 webforms project written in VB that involves a multi-table SQL Server insert. That is, I want the customer to input all their contact information, order details etc. into one control (thinking wizard control). Then, I want to call a stored procedure that does the insert into the respective database tables. I'm familiar and comfortable with the ASP.NET wizard control. However, all the examples I've seen in my searches pertain to inserting data into one table. Questions: 1. Given a typical order process - customer information, order information, order details - should a wizard control be used to insert data into multiple database tables? If not, what controls/workflow do you suggest? 2. I've set primary keys and indexes on my order details, orders and customers tables. Is there special stored procedure syntax to use to ensure that referential integrity is maintained through the insert process? Thanks, Sid

  My program is getting a false positive from a certain 3 letter Anti Virus Company. Its just our companies branded version of Ultra VNC. Its only this one company that's identifying it as a virus and we've been using the same copy of that program for almost a year. I know its possible to tell this Anti Virus program the VNC client is safe, but I can't do that for all of our clients. I've tried to find a way to contact this company to see if they can do something to prevent this from happening, but I'm not getting anywhere. Has anyone who's experiened this issue with thier software, found a solution? Thanks

• Is it immoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The immediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was inapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see inapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

• Web based API that can tell me if a number is a landline or cell phone?

  My application sends SMS messages to people, but the numbers entered in as their cell phone are sometimes land lines (this is user error or the user not really knowing if the contact number they have is a cell phone or landline.) I found a few websites that can tell me if a number is a landline or cell phone, but they do not offer programatic API's. Is anyone aware of a way a web application can figure out if a number can receive SMS messages? I guess a test SMS message is one way, but my current SMS gateway fails hard when it gets a landline number and doesn't tell me the landline number it tried to send the SMS to. I'll follow this up with my carrier, but I would love an easy way to let the user entering phone numbers in if they are a landline or cell number. Update: There are ways to figure this out. Take a look at http://www.phonevalidator.com, they can query a phone number and figure out if it is a landline or cell phone.

• Foreign key on table A --> B, AND foreign key on table B --> A. How is this done?

  Hi, I have two tables - 'business' and 'business_contacts'. The business_contact table has a many-to-one relationship with the business table. Furthermore, each business has a 'primary contact' field - which I'd assume is a one-to-many relationship with the business_contacts table. The problem, of course, is that this creates a catch-22 for data insertion. Since neither field can be null, I can't insert a business_contact until I have a corresponding business, but I can't insert a business until I have a corresponding business_contact. If anyone could help me get my head around how mutual one-to-many relationships are supposed to be dealt with I'd be most appreciative. (Project being done in MySQL if it makes any difference)

  Hi, I want to store / save personal preference settings like Email, Phone number for an App. I have few forms which send info by Email to my ID. I want to know the Email & Phone number of user so I can contact this person if need be. I don't want users to keep entering their Email ID & Phone No. everytime in each form. It's wise to take these inputs (Email & Phone) just once per device / per App installed on the device. I am trying to use .plist for this purpose. I have no success. How do I do it?   I am trying to use the Google Contacts API to connect to a user's contact information, on my Google apps domain. Generating an access_token using the gdata api's ContactsService clientlogin function while using the API key for my project works fine, but I would prefer to not store the user's credentials, and from the information I have found that method uses OAuth1.0 So, to use OAuth2.0 I have: Generated a Service Account in the developer's console for my project Granted access to the service account for the scope of https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/ in the Google apps domain admin panel Attempted to generate credentials using SignedJwtAssertionCredentials: credentials = SignedJwtAssertionCredentials( service_account_name=service_account_email, private_key=key_from_p12_file, scope='https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/', sub=user_email') The problem I am running into is that attempting to generate an access token using this method fails. It succeeds in generating the token when I remove the sub parameter, but then that token fails when I try to fetch the user's contacts. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

• How to find validity of a string of parentheses, curly brackets and square brackets?

  I recently came in contact with this interesting problem. You are given a string containing just the characters '(', ')', '{', '}', '[' and ']', for example, "[{()}]", you need to write a function which will check validity of such an input string, function may be like this: bool isValid(char* s); these brackets have to close in the correct order, for example "()" and "()[]{}" are all valid but "(]", "([)]" and "{{{{" are not! I came out with following O(n) time and O(n) space complexity solution, which works fine: Maintain a stack of characters. Whenever you find opening braces '(', '{' OR '[' push it on the stack. Whenever you find closing braces ')', '}' OR ']' , check if top of stack is corresponding opening bracket, if yes, then pop the stack, else break the loop and return false. Repeat steps 2 - 3 until end of the string. This works, but can we optimize it for space, may be constant extra space, I understand that time complexity cannot be less than O(n) as we have to look at every character. So my question is can we solve this problem in O(1) space?

• Weird Animation when inserting a row in UITableView

  I have tableview which holds a list of data, when users press "Edit" i add an extra row at the bottom saying "add new" - (void)setEditing:(BOOL)editing animated:(BOOL)animated { [super setEditing:editing animated:animated]; NSArray *paths = [NSArray arrayWithObject: [NSIndexPath indexPathForRow:1 inSection:0]]; if (editing) { [[self tableView] insertRowsAtIndexPaths:paths withRowAnimation:UITableViewRowAnimationTop]; } else { [[self tableView] deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:paths withRowAnimation:UITableViewRowAnimationTop]; } } and of course the UITableView transform with animation, but weird thing is the row before the row that i just added, has different animation than all others. all rows perform "slides in" animation, but that 2nd last one did a "fade in" animation. and i didnt set any animation on the 2nd last row (or any other row), and if i didnt add the new row in, the animation slides in as normal when i switch to editing mode. somehow i cant find an answer, i check with contact app on my phone, it didnt have that weird animation as i have, when they adding a new row on editing mode.   How can I find or generate thousands of company names for testing and demo purposes? (Address, phone number, and related information would be nice too.) I've got a system I'm building which includes business contact information. Pretty common no doubt. My test/demo database currently has randomly generated individual's names loaded (thanks to a handy IRS spreadsheet I found). This has worked great for internal testing and review purposes, but it looks really odd when shown to prospective customers. I've tried various online public information sources (e.g. EDGAR, and county based property records searches), but these all require me to manually stitch together the results in blocks of 50 names or so at a time. I could do this, but was really hoping for a search service or data store out there that had this type of information readily searchable and retrievable in very large batches.

• Why is this postgresql query so slow?

  I'm no database expert, but I have enough knowledge to get myself into trouble, as is the case here. This query SELECT DISTINCT p.* FROM points p, areas a, contacts c WHERE ( p.latitude > 43.6511659465 AND p.latitude < 43.6711659465 AND p.longitude > -79.4677941889 AND p.longitude < -79.4477941889) AND p.resource_type = 'Contact' AND c.user_id = 6 is extremely slow. The points table has fewer than 2000 records, but it takes about 8 seconds to execute. There are indexes on the latitude and longitude columns. Removing the clause concering the resource_type and user_id make no difference. The latitude and longitude fields are both formatted as number(15,10) -- I need the precision for some calculations. There are many, many other queries in this project where points are compared, but no execution time problems. What's going on?
