  • Unable to run Microsoft Office 2010 install file

    This problem began when I noticed that the icons in the Windows 7 task bar for MS Word and Outlook were generic. I rebuilt the icon cache. Still not the right icons, but not the generic "document" icons either, and both are identical (to each other). The two programs seem to be working OK. So then I tried to repair MS Office. I ran the setup file. It extracts the files, I get the splash screen, and then the message, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." with a "Close program" button. Microsoft does not notify me about a solution. What I have tried: 1. running two other copies of the setup program; 2. doing an in-place re-install of Windows 7.

  • HP Wireless Printer not working

    I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

On these I am planning on running a few various servers: Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (several custom built ASP.NET Apps) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server Linux Web Server w/ Several WordPress Blogs (XAMPP?) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ IIS (DEV ENVIRONMENT) Windows 2008 Server R2 w/ MS SQL 2008 Database Server (DEV ENVIRONMENT) In your opinion, will this hardware be sufficient to run the above load with room for possible 2-3 more virtual machines (probably lightweight web servers)?

    So I have wcf rest service which succesfuly runs from a console app, if I navigate to: http://localhost:8000/Service/picture/300/400 my image is displayed note the 300/400 sets the width and height of the image within the body of the html page.   • What happened to WinFS?

    The most interesting feature that was ever connected to what eventually became Vista was WinFS, a revolutionary (so it seemed, at least back then) new way of storing and accessing information on a computer. This feature was cut despite actually reaching a closed alpha/technical preview release. There was a smoke and mirrors blog post from MS about the technology living on in an upcoming SQL server release, but to me it just felt like it was axed, hard. Does anyone have any idea what happened to it? Is it killed, or just on the backburner? Was it just impossible to implement, too expensive, or did someone think of a better idea? Are there any projects (From MS or anyone else) that have similar goals?

  • Performance Drop Lingers after Load [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Databases I'm noticing a drop in performance after subsequent load tests. Although our cpu and ram numbers look fine, performance seems to degrade over time as sustained load is applied to the system. If we allow more time between the load tests, the performance gets back to about 1,000 ms, but if you apply load every 3 minutes or so, it starts to degrade to a point where it takes 12,000 ms. None of the application servers are showing lingering apache processes and the number of database connections cools down to about 3 (from a sustained 20). Is there anything else I should be looking out for here?

  • Access synced notes from iPhone on Windows other than through Mail/Outlook?

    I see from the iPhone how to page that synced notes on Windows appear in MS Mail or Outlook/Outlook Express. I don't use any of these programs. Can I access the iPhone notes some other way? I don't see indication on Apple's site that such a thing is possible. I would like to do this without a 3rd party iPhone application, and I'd really like to avoid MS Mail/Outlook. For what it's worth, this is for my wife and she's using Windows. I sync my iPhone with a Mac. She's loathe to use a bunch of different programs.

  • Inbox should not contain any calendar appointment

    Imagine two users A and B.User B has editor rights on mailbox A via delegation. Delegation settings: User A should not receive any invitation (calendar appointments). All should be routed to user B. It works fine when you are connected to mailbox via Outlook. Problem is that sometimes it does not work when user is connected via his iPhone (he receives calendar appointments in inbox). I know that this feature for MS products and therefore it works on MS Outlook. But user A told me that it worked in the past also on iPhone with user C. Problem is that nowadays it does not work perfectly for user B. Do you have any suggestion please? Thank you in advance.

  • Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

    I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

Now even the ones that were responding on port 80 are no longe responding, even though I did not touch the virtual hosts for them. I get this message now: Oops!   • Uninstalling hard deleted application from Windows7

    Unfortunately, I have hard deleted the microsoft sql server folder present in program files folder. So now I need to uninstall the MSSQL server from my machine. I have tried but I got an error something like "The source folder is missing". For resolving this issue, I have manually deleted the MS SQL services using "sc delete" command and I have deleted the MSSQL entry from regedit file also. But still MS SQL server entry available in "Programs and Features" list. Please guide me for solving this issue even I can't able to re install the MSSQL server once again. Thank you guys...   • Re-install (repair) Server 2012 Roles & Features

    Is there a way to re-install all Server Roles & Features in Server 2012? As far as I can see from Server Manager all that can be done is to manually remove each and then re-install but I am hoping that MS have provided some way of just repairing / re-installing all installed roles & features. Anyone know if there is a way of doing that? The reason for wanting to do this is that I have a Domain Server which after some recent MS updates has started causing numerous event log warnings & errors and has started behaving erratically. I know that System File Checker will check installed files but that will not fix any registry permissions problems, which is where I think problems have arisen. Guess what I am looking for is some way to recreate the whole registry and it's permissions but without doing a complete re-install. Thanks, Nick

  • How does java.util.Collections.contains() perform faster than a linear search?

    I've been fooling around with a bunch of different ways of searching collections, collections of collections, etc. Doing lots of stupid little tests to verify my understanding. Here is one which boggles me (source code further below). In short, I am generating N random integers and adding them to a list. The list is NOT sorted. I then use Collections.contains() to look for a value in the list. I intentionally look for a value that I know won't be there, because I want to ensure that the entire list space is probed. I time this search. I then do another linear search manually, iterating through each element of the list and checking if it matches my target. I also time this search. On average, the second search takes 33% longer than the first one. By my logic, the first search must also be linear, because the list is unsorted. The only possibility I could think of (which I immediately discard) is that Java is making a sorted copy of my list just for the search, but (1) I did not authorize that usage of memory space and (2) I would think that would result in MUCH more significant time savings with such a large N. So if both searches are linear, they should both take the same amount of time. Somehow the Collections class has optimized this search, but I can't figure out how.   • How does Google manage to serve results so fast?

    I am building an autocomplete functionality for my site and the Google instant results are my benchmark. When I look at Google, the 50-60 ms response time baffle me. They look insane. In comparison here’s how mine looks like. To give you an idea my results are cached on the load balancer and served from a machine that has httpd slowstart and initcwnd fixed. My site is also behind cloudflare From a server side perspective I don’t think I can do anything more. Can someone help me take this 500 ms response time to 60ms? What more should I be doing to achieve Google level performance?

  • How can I create a 4TB partition on my software RAID5 device?

    I have set up a RAID5 device with three 2TB hard drives using mdadm. The device was successfully created, but I cannot seem to create a partition on the device. When I try to make an ext3 or ext4 partition via Disk Utility, I get the following error Error creating partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_add_partition: device_file=/dev/md0, start=0, size=4000526106624, type= Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=4000526106624) MSDOS_MAGIC found found partition type 0xee => protective MBR for GPT Exiting MS-DOS parser Entering EFI GPT parser GPT magic found partition_entry_lba=2 num_entries=128 size_of_entry=128 Leaving EFI GPT parser EFI GPT partition table detected containing partition table scheme = 3 got it got disk new partition guid '' is not valid type '' for GPT appear to be malformed I have seen this question, but that seems to suggest using gparted to do the partitioning. I'm fine with doing that, but my RAID device doesn't show up in the list of gparted devices. I suspect because this is a RAID and not a regular disk. I have already created a GPT partition table on the device. How can I add a partition to my device?
