• MPMoviePlayerController seems to make 2 calls for each movie

  I seem to have an issue where an iphone app using the MPMoviePlayerController seems to make 2 calls to the server for each video it wants to play back. This occurs with iphone 3.x OS and libraries but not with iphone 2.x. I know that iphone does progressive download and will make multiple 206 requests, etc. but as far as our back end is concerned the player appears to make 2 separate sessions. This only appears to be an issue with iPhone native apps and not iphone videos played through safari. Additional info from apple: iPhone OS 3.0 added support for streaming audio and video over HTTP, and MPMoviePlayerController must validate the media before playback to determine if it is streaming content or progressively downloaded content. This is the delay you are experiencing. On a fast network, the delay should be minimized. Is this double check causing 2 sessions be created for each video request? Any one else seeing same issue? Is there a remedy?

  I am trying to use "printf" in my Visual C++ project however it is not working. Using Lazy Foo's tutorial, I set up SDL in my project, but when I play it, printf doesnt do anything. #include "SDL.h" #include <stdio.h> int main( int argc, char* args[] ) { printf("Testing"); return 0; } The output looks like this: The program '[4664] SDL Testing.exe: Native' has exited with code 0 (0x0). And that's about it. What could be wrong?

  I've recently been working with an opensource library for a commercial product. The opensource code is distributed from the website of the company who sells the proprietary product as a zip file. The library is a (direct) port to C# of the original library which is in Java. As such, it uses methods instead of getter/setter properties. The code contains copyright notices to the supplier of the product. The C# port was originally provided to the company by a 3rd party individual. I have modified the source to be more C# like and added a couple of small features. I want to put my version of the code out there (Google code or where ever) so that C# users of the software can benefit from a more native feeling library. How can I and/or how should I amend the copyright notice to give proper credit to The comercial owner of the original source The guy who provided the original C# port Myself and anyone else who contributes to the project in the future The source is provided under the LGPL V2.1,

  I am using Spring HibernateTemplate and need to insert hundreds of records into a mysql database every second. Not sure what is the most performant way of doing it, but I am trying to see how the multi value mysql inserts do using hibernate. • JQuery Accordion - bottom-up in stead of top-down

  Hi there, I have a question about the accordion plugin for jQuery. Basically, I've got it to work on my site nicely, there's just one thing that I'd have liked it to do and that is bottom-up opening in stead of top-down. What I mean by that is that my 3 buttons just stand in the vertical menu (div) in the bottom. And when you click it, they'll slide open but upwards, not downwards. Is there a way to achieve this easily? I've gone through the documentation, but can't find any native support for it, so I was wondering if it was possible to do it in the javascript of the plugin itself. Thanks in advance.

  I have a folder where files are going to be dropped for importing into my data warehouse. \\server\share\loading_area I have the following (inherited) code that uses xp_cmdshell shivers to call out to the command shell to run the DIR command and insert the resulting filenames into a table in SQL Server. • Implement Combobox/Option Menu funcionality on an iPhone interface?

  I want to give a list of choices on an iPhone GUI that works like a Combobox/Option menu. It needs to display the current selection, but on tapping it you should be able to change the current selection which will trigger a refresh of the screen. The option menu is letting the user choose which category a search is being performed under. So there is a default category and there are about 6 other choices. Idea 1: Use a label or button and when clicked on a new screen overlays that has all 6 options in a tableview, clicking on one closes the overlay screen and goes back to the main page with the updated value displayed. Idea 2: Should I use a totally different but native iPhone GUI widget like a Navbar at the bottom of the screen to reflect the different options?

• Anyone Know a Great Sparse One Dimensional Array Library in Python?

  I am working on an algorithm in Python that uses arrays heavily. The arrays are typically sparse and are read from and written to constantly. I am currently using relatively large native arrays and the performance is good but the memory usage is high (as expected). I would like to be able to have the array implementation not waste space for values that are not used and allow an index offset other than zero. As an example, if my numbers start at 1,000,000 I would like to be able to index my array starting at 1,000,000 and not be required to waste memory with a million unused values. Array reads and writes needs to be fast. Expanding into new territory can be a small delay but reads and writes should be O(1) if possible. Does anybody know of a library that can do it? Thanks!

  Hi, I've got a fairly specific problem i've been struggling with for a couple of days. I'm using a native C++, one of the methods takes a ptr to a struct containing fixed size char arrays. e.g. struct userData { char data1[10]; char data2[10]; }; method: short AddItem(long id, userData* data); I'm trying to call to call this from Managed VC++ but I need to have an instance of userData I can keep hold of in my managed class. • Why does C++ linking use virtually no CPU?

  On a native C++ project, linking right now can take a minute or two, yet during this time CPU drops from 100% during compilation to virtually zero. Does this mean linking is primarily a disk activity? If so, is this the main area an SSD would make big changes? But, why aren't all my OBJ files (or as many as possible) kept in RAM after compilation to avoid this? With 4Gb of RAM I should be able to save a lot of disk access and make it CPU-bound again, no?

• Jquery counting elements by class what is the best way to implement this?

  Ok what i'm trying to do is to count all of the elements in the current page with the same class and then i'm going to use it to be added onto a name for a input form. Basically i'm allowing users to click on an and then by doing so add another one for more of the same type of items. But i can't think of a way to count all of these simply with jquery/javascript. I was going to then name the item as something like name="whatever(total+1)", if anyone has a simple way to do this i'd be extremely grateful as javascript isn't exactly my native tongue and stack overflow usually has a ton of great answers and a great community so i'm hoping my query will not go unheard.

  I need fastest way to convert files from latin1 to utf-8 in python. The files are large ~ 2G. ( I am moving DB data ). So far I have import codecs infile = codecs.open(tmpfile, 'r', encoding='latin1') outfile = codecs.open(tmpfile1, 'w', encoding='utf-8') for line in infile: outfile.write(line) infile.close() outfile.close() but it is still slow. The conversion takes one fourth of the whole migration time. I could also use a linux command line utility if it is faster than native python code.

• I'm using the jQuery .scroll() function, why can't I override its effects with another function?

  I'm using the jQuery .scroll() function to make a certain element fade to 0.2 opacity. Since there is no native "scrollstop" indicator, I decided to make the element fade back to 1.0 opacity on hover. However, it doesn't work. Here's my code: $(document).ready(function() { $(window).scroll(function() { $("#navlist").animate({ opacity: 0.2 }, 2000); }); $("#navlist").hover( function() { $(this).animate({ opacity: 1 }, 500); }, function() { $(this).animate({ opacity: 1 }, 500); // just to be safe? } ); }); When I scroll, the #navlist element fades, but when you hover over it nothing happens. But if you refresh the page when you're half way down, the element automatically fades as soon as you refresh, before I've scrolled, and if you try to hover to fade it back in, nothing happens. Any thoughts?

• How does Google implement Microsoft Exchange access?

  I know with Android 2.x there is the ability to tap into Microsoft Exchange, for at least email, if not calendar and contacts. I would like to see how this was accomplished. Particularly because Microsoft Exchange exposes SOAP web services, and I understand there is no native Android support for SOAP. Since this is open source, shouldn't I be able to find something in the Android source? If so, can you point me in the right direction of where to find it in the ~4Gig (!) source? I want to develop an application that accesses Exchange contacts and calendars, but don't want to reinvent that piece. Any other guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Hibernate Auto-Increment not working

  I have a column in my DB that is set with Identity(1,1) and I can't get hibernate annotations to work for it. I get errors when I try to create a new record. In my entity I have the following. @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.IDENTITY, generator="native") @Column(name="SeqNo", unique=true, nullable=false) BigDecimal seqNo; But when I try to add a new record I get the following error. Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'MemberSelectedOptions' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF. I don't want to set IDENTIY_INSERT to ON because I want the identity column in the db to manage the values. The SQL that is run is the following; where you can clearly see the insert. insert into dbo.MemberSelectedOptions (OptionStatusCd, EffectiveDate, TermDate, SelectionStatusDate, SysLstUpdtUserId, SysLstTrxDtm, SourceApplication, GroupId, MemberId, OptionId, SeqNo) values (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?) • Is there an easy way in Python to wait until certain condition is true?

  I need to wait in a script until a certain number of conditions become true? I know I can roll my own eventing using condition variables and friends, but I don't want to go through all the trouble of implementing it, since some object property changes come from external thread in a wrapped C++ library (Boost.Python), so I can't just hijack __setattr__ in a class and put a condition variable there, which leaves me with either trying to create and signal a Python condition variable from C++, or wrap a native one and wait on it in Python, both of which sound fiddly, needlessly complicated and boring. Is there an easier way to do it, barring continuous polling of the condition? Ideally it would be along the lines of res = wait_until(lambda: some_predicate, timeout) if (not res): print 'timed out'

• Is Classic ADO still viable for a mixed managed/unmanaged App?

  We have a complex architecture with much logic in unmanaged code that needs database access. Currently this is via ODBC drivers and MFC classes and we're considering the issues of migrating our abstraction layer to use ADO or ADO.Net. In the latter case we'd have to be pushing database logic back up into the .Net layer. I'm trying to decide if the pain of invoking the database via .Net callbacks is offset by the improvements in ADO.Net. The Wikipedia comparison was interesting although I'm not sure I believe all the points in the comparison table (eg: does ADO.Net always use XML to pass data?). A 2005 comparison shows ADO.Net performing dramatically faster. Microsoft's guide to ADO.Net for ADO programmers suggests we will gain much from going to ADO.Net especially the way that data is available in native (.Net) types rather than solely through OLEAutomation's Variant.

• Is it "legal" for C++ runtime to call terminate() when the C++ code is used inside some non-C++ prog

  In certain cases - especially when an exception escapes a destructor during stack unwinding - C++ runtime calls terminate() which must do something reasonable post-mortem and then exit the program. When a question "why so harsh" arises the answer is usually "there's nothing more reasonable to do in such error situations". That sounds reasonable if the whole program is in C++. Now what if the C++ code is in a library and the program that uses the library is not in C++? This happens quite often - for example I might have a native C++ COM component consumed by a .NET program. Once terminate() is called inside the component code the .NET program suddenly ends abnormally. The program author will first of all think "I don't care of C++, why the hell is this library make my program exit?" How do I handle the latter scenario when developing libraries in C++? Is it reasonable that terminate() unexpectedly ends the program? Is there a better way to handle such situations?

  Hi, What do you think would be the best way to produce custom size image thumbnail from MS Office documents (doc, xls and ppt) on Windows with native code (means all means besides .NET/JAVA)? My current research result: IExtractImage COM. Problem: The size of the generated result is fixed and low quality, and you can't be sure all the source documents contain the thumbnails. Use a programmable virtual printer to print the specified page, and the printer must support image output, any good suggestion for this? What else would you suggest? thanks!

  I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem. But hibernate throws an error saying: Space is not allowed after parameter prefix So there is a conflict with the := mysql variable assignment and hibernate variable assignment.   Hi, I have an application in which I have to show the alerts for user specied reminders, I am able to show these reminders when my application is running but my problem is i have to show thsese reminders to the user when my application is not running? is it possible to show the alerts or remindsers when the application is running? what i obsered in iphone native applications(messages, emails) it whill show no of unread or new messages at the top right tip of the icon on the desktop and it will keep on updates these count. Can I impplement these king of alerts to my applications? if yes how? it not is there any other to show the alerts when application is not running?
