• Deploy SMO application to workstation without SQL Server 2008 installed

  I am trying to deploy an application that uses SMO on a workstation without SQL Server installed on it. The instance the app is connecting to is SQL Server 2008. The application is failing with: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845cdc8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. The assembly in question is in the same path as my application as well as system32. I am running this on a Windows 7 64 bit box. I have run SQL Native Client, CLR, and SMO MSIs from the 2008 SMO redist download page. This app worked fine when connecting to SQL Server 2005. What gives?

• Python: Pickling highly-recursive objects without using `setrecursionlimit`

  I've been getting RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded when trying to pickle a highly-recursive tree object. Much like this asker here. He solved his problem by setting the recursion limit higher with sys.setrecursionlimit. But I don't want to do that: I think that's more of a workaround than a solution. Because I want to be able to pickle my trees even if they have 10,000 nodes in them. (It currently fails at around 200.) (Also, every platform's true recursion limit is different, and I would really like to avoid opening this can of worms.) Is there any way to solve this at the fundamental level? If only the pickle module would pickle using a loop instead of recursion, I wouldn't have had this problem. Maybe someone has an idea how I can cause something like this to happen, without rewriting the pickle module? Any other idea how I can solve this problem will be appreciated.

• C# Dynamic Query Without A Database Model

  I have been searching the web for a solution to dynamic queries. I have found many different solutions (e.g. Linq to Sql, Dynamic Linq Expressions, Dynamic Query), but all of these solutions involve some sort of previous knowledge of the database (like a model in code). Maybe what I am asking is way off the deep end, but is there any possible way to dynamically query a database without a model? For example, a database has a Customers table with the following columns: CustomerID Name FavoriteColor I want to create a query as SELECT Name FROM Customers WHERE @0 = @1, where the two placeholders are populated dynamically. The resulting data does not tie to a model class and I would prefer to use some sort of framework to build the queries, not simple string concatenation. The System.Linq.Dynamic namespace came really close to fulfilling this request, but it uses a database model. I realize this is crazy, but I was just curious.

  Hi, I've two entities with 1 to N relation in between. Let's say Books and Pages. Book has a navigation property as Pages. Book has BookId as an identifier and Page has an auto generated id and a scalar property named PageNo. LazyLoading is set to true. I've generated this using VS2010 & .net 4.0 and created a database from that. In the partial class of Book, I need a GetPage function like below public Page GetPage(int PageNumber) { //checking whether it exist etc are not included for simplicity return Pages.Where(p=>p.PageNo==PageNumber).First(); } This works. However, since Pages property in the Book is an EntityCollection it has to load all Pages of a book in memory in order to get the one page (this slows down the app when this function is hit for the first time for a given book). i.e. Framework does not merge the queries and run them at once. It loads the Pages in memory and then uses LINQ to objects to do the second part To overcome this I've changed the code as follows public Page GetPage(int PageNumber) { MyContainer container = new MyContainer(); return container.Pages.Where(p=>p.PageNo==PageNumber && p.Book.BookId==BookId).First(); } This works considerably faster however it doesn't take into account the pages that have not been serialized to the db. So, both options has its cons. Is there any trick in the framework to overcome this situation. This must be a common scenario where you don't want all of the objects of a Navigation property loaded in memory when you don't need them.

  Hi, I have a class which can contain many small elements in a list. Looks like: public class Farm { private ArrayList<Horse> mHorses; } just wondering what will happen if the mHorses array grew to something crazy like 15,000 elements. I'm assuming that trying to write and read this from the datastore would be crazy, because I'd get killed on the serialization process. It's important that I can get the entire array in one shot without paging, and each Horse element may only have two string properties in it, so they are pretty lightweight: public class Horse { private String mId; private String mName; } I don't need these horses indexed at all. Does it sound reasonable to just store the mHorse array as a raw Text field, and force my clients to do the deserialization? Something like: public class Farm { private Text mHorsesSerialized; } then whenever the client receives a Farm instance, it has to take the raw string of horses, and split it in order to reinstantiate the list, something like: // GWT client perhaps Farm farm = rpcCall.getMyFarm(); String horsesSerialized = farm.getHorses(); String[] horseBlocks = horsesSerialized.split(","); for (int i = 0; i < horseBlocks.length; i++) { // .. continue deserializing the individual objects ... } yeah... so hopefully it would be quick to read a Farm instance from the datastore, and the serialization penalty is paid by the client, Thanks

  I have the following enum defined. I have used underscores as this enum is used in logging and i don't want to incur the overhead of reflection by using custom attribute.We use very heavy logging. Now requirement is to change "LoginFailed_InvalidAttempt1" to "LoginFailed Attempt1". If i change this enum, i will have to change its value across application. I can replace underscore by a space inside logging SP. He feels I have sold myself short and missing out on a good salary by getting another junior job, given how he (my manager) has a lot of faith in my development skills. However, I have not worked long enough for a proper senior job (5 years +) but then the senior developer we do have in my current company isn't given senior tasks (judged by difficulty).   Hi I try to create an hotspot by Extends of canvas and I try to add it on a panel witch painted by images , so I must to draw an icon (image) instead of clear rectangle of the screen, to do that I override the paint method to draw the icon I want to use, so far there is no problem, the hotspot work true and the icon painted in true size I want(32,24 pixel) I try to add this hotspot after painting image on the my panel in mypanel.paint(g) that override too. The problem , I use an car icon that have no background !!(I hope you can understand me) just car icon must be show on the panel that painted with my images; But an unwanted rectangle created around the icon and made bad view, How I can paint may icon on panel without that background? Please help me.

  Hi, I've got a service which runs all the time and also keeps a log file. It basically adds new lines to the log file every few seconds. I'm written a small file which reads these lines and then parses them to various actions. The question I have is how can I delete the lines which I have already parsed from the log file without disrupting the writing of the log file by the service? Usually when I need to delete a line in a file then I open the original one and a temporary one and then I just write all the lines to the temp file except the original which I want to delete. Obviously this method will not word here. So how do I go about deleting them ?

But what i want to do is to create an NHibernate Configuration object on a selected database engine without a real database behind the scene... And i don't manage to do this. • get data from gridview without querying database

  Hi there I am new at this so please bear with me... I have managed to get the following code to work...so when I click on the "select" link in each row of the gridview, the data is transfered to other label/textbox on the webpage. So far so good, the thing is that everytime I click on select...it goes and checks on the database for the data and there is a delay of a few seconds... I was hoping that the data, since it is already visible on the gridrows, is simply "picked up" and used on other labels/textboxes...without requerying the database. Is this possible ?   Hi, I've generated a pdf using iTextSharp and I can preview it very well in ASP.Net but I need to send it directly to printer without a preview. I want the user to click the print button and automatically the document prints. I know that a page can be sent directly to printer using the javascript window.print() but I don't know how to make it for a PDF. Edit: it is not embedded, I generate it like this; ...   I have webpage where I have a search page. I provide a "dynamic" RSS feed for search so that a user can subscribe to search results for any search term he likes. So I was wondering what is the standard (or best practise) way to do if that search term returns 0 results which means I have no "items" to put in the feed. Do I just return an empty feed (only including the meta data and no item elements). Or should I put some special item element in the feed with some "no results" text? edit: YouTube returns a feed without any item elements. If no-one can answer me I'll take it that this is the right way of doing it since I can't find any info elsewhere :)

• Android: How to periodically check current location without draining the battery

  I have a background service which works periodically by timer.scheduleAtFixedRate. It wakes up every amount of time (let's say 60 seconds for example) and checks for the location. The location is checked by locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 60000, 5, listener); and the actual location is collected from the listener's onLocationChanged. Now, when the phone is outside and GPS reception is good, this works fine. But, if the phone is inside, the GPS is almost always active - looking for a signal, and the battery is drained rapidly. I created another thread using a Handler and a Runnable in order to conrol the GPS active time accurately: I used locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, listener); and locManager.removeUpdates(listener); so I can open and close the GPS as I want. In this case, I can open the GPS for the exact amount of time, but found out that it doesn't lock in an area with good reception even after 10 seconds. So here I'm draining the battery again... I'm using API level 7, hence I cannot use locationManager.requestSingleUpdate. I have two questions: Is there any way to optimize this process? Will upgrading to API level 9 (and use locationManager.requestSingleUpdate) improve the process significantly? I mean, does it worth upgrading?

It is a syntax error, but is there a reason as to why the Javascript lexer needs these other types to be enclosed in round brackets? • Backbone.js routing without changing url

  I am migrating a single-page web application based on Backbone.js and jQuery to a Chrome extension. However, neither the pushState nor the hashbang-based router modes seem to play well with the environment within the extension. I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off just directly rendering views on user interactions, bypassing the window.location system altogether. However, I'm not too sure how to implement this without changing calls to Router.navigate in dozens of files. Is there a pluggable/modular way to keep the Backbone routing system but bypass any changes to the url?

• Render an asynchronous report, wider than the screen, without extra scrollbars

  I have an asynchronous local SSRS 2005 report that is of variable height and width, but routinely is bigger than the screen. I want to render it full size so that some of the report renders off screen and the only scrollbars the user sees are the ones on the browser window. What is the best way to accomplish this? The only method that I've found that even comes remotely close to what I want is to set static width/height values that are much larger than the report will ever be. But, this is undesirable since it leaves so much extra whitespace in the browser window. Has anyone had success rendering asynchronous reports without the extra scrollbars?

  I have a web shop which sends my customers to a pretty popular website to redeem their just purchased product (at my site). However, I keep getting complaints that the product has been redeemed at the wrong account. Because the other website is that popular, it often appears that when the customers computer is shared by others the wrong account was logged in (automatically by a coockie). Now I'm wondering which steps I can take to prevent this from happening, since I don't have control over the other website (which does not make clear enough who's logged in). Is there some way to open another website without its coockies?
