• Compiling without setting up a project in NetBeans or Visual Studio

  Hi, In short: is there a way to compile and run single file in NetBeans or Visual Studio without having to setup and tinker with projects? I'm currently using code::blocks as my IDE. It's fast and very simple: perfect for my needs as a begginner. I wanted to dive a little deeper and try out a more advanced IDE such as NetBeans or Visual Studio. It appears I have to mess with projects and have a setup that seems overkill for having to compile and run one very simple .c/.cpp source file that contains less than 50-100 lines of code etc. Is there a way around this?

• Why would gnu ld link order causes Signal 11 (SEGV) on startup?

  We are building a large application in C++ that includes the use of many (static) libraries. We have a problem where the application crashes on startup with a Signal 11, before we even reach main. After much debugging, we have observed that if we explicitly reference an object file so its link order is early, the program crashes on startup. If the file is referenced later (or not referenced at all), the program does not crash. To be clear, there is NO code invoked directly from this object file. However, as it is C++, there might be static objects that do get constructed (it's a CORBA IDL generated file). We use the -Wl,--start-group ... --end-group arguments to multi-pass link the symbols since the libraries are interdependent. Here is a representation of what I mean. This is what the linker's object file order is: Order 1 Order 2 Order 3 foo.o foo.o foo.o ... ... ... main.o main.o main.o crasher.o libA.o libA.o libA.o LibB.o LibB.o LibB.o LibC.o LibC.o LibC.o crasher.o Results: NO CRASH NO CRASH CRASH Does any one have an idea why the linkage order has an effect on the crash? It would be nice if we could force the crasher.o to link later, but we're really after an explanation. Also, is there a way to force the linker to place crasher.o towards the end? Just to add to the fun, in actuality, crasher.o is part of a Library in the --start/--end-group.

  I find some iphone book apps have such feature: One screen one page of text without scrolling. The text can just fit into the whole screen with linebreaks and indentations. I'm curious of how to implement this. How could I decide the length of text that just fit into the screen. And also, given the whole text, I can calculate out the number of pages. If this is not possible to be done on iPhone(runtime?), then is it possible to process the text before storing it in app? I mean I calculate how many pages I need(how to split the raw text), probably how many lines per page.

  Hello all, My current project requires me to assemble a .zip file containing HTML and text-only templates for a user to download, for importing into an email marketing program. I've inherited this project, and currently the code uses a "fake" model (that is a model that does not directly correlate to a database table), in which it stores the entire template in a string, using dynamic variables to populate certain areas. The "fake" model then has a method for creating a zip file. It seems to me that there has to be a better way to do this. I was wondering if there was a way to move the template into a .erb/haml file, and then write a method that would populate the file in preparation for being zipped up? Basically, is there a way to render an HTML and text file, without actually having to display them? Thanks for any help.

  I want to know if there is any benefiting caching a sprite sheet and accessing the sprite by frame without using the CCSpriteBatchNode? In some parts of my game the sprite batch node is useful because there is a lot on the screen, however on another part its not, because there are just a few things, and there are requirements for layers so CCSpriteBatchNode wouldn't be useful. However, for the sake of consistency I would like to use Sprite Sheets for all my sprites, and so was beginning to wonder if I would still receive any benefit from it? (Or worse that it could some how be slower...)

  Hi, I have to create a very simple webpage to show, filter and add data from not-yet-defined source (probably txt/xml/cvs). Records should be visible as a table, filtered using 3 criteria fields. There should be also possibility to add new records. My first thought was: XHTML + jQuery + csv2table + PicNet Table Filter. It does exactly what I want except adding rows - that is saving changes in source file (probably due to security risk). My question is - is there any possibility to do it without involving server side like asp.net, jee, php, sql? Source file is located on the server. Thanks for your ideas :-)

  I would like to slice random letters from a string. Given s="howdy" I would like to pick elements from 's' without replacement but keep the index number. For example >>> random.sample(s,len(s)) ['w', 'h', 'o', 'd', 'y'] is close to what I want, but I would actually prefer something like [('w',2), ('h',0), ('o',1), ('d',3), ('y',4)] with letter-index pairs. This is important because the same letter appears in 's' more than once. ie) "letter" where 't' appears twice but I need to distinguish the first 't' from the 'second'. Ideally I actually only need to pick letters as I need them but scrambling and calculating all the letters in a list (as shown above) is ok.

• Send data over telnet without pressing enter

  I've recently started messing around with Java sockets and telnet... I want the user to be able to connect to the server, just type a letter and have it sent to the server, without pressing enter to send it. I'm sure there's no way for the server to set this up, but maybe telnet has a parameter or something which could allow this? Maybe if I got the user to type stty cbreak or stty raw before running telnet, this would work? (UNIX only, I know!) If I can get telnet to do this then it saves me having to write a special client just for this feature...

  I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure what I'd needed to answer my question. I'm wondering if it's possible to program a way to half wake your cell phone screen without having to press any buttons or using the sensors. Like I've found you can do on the blackberry z10, you have an option to wake the screen by swiping up from a locked screen. I love android and will use it regardless, but I had to use a z10 for work for a while and stumbled upon that feature. It would be fantastic to have that feature with Android as hitting a power button can get annoying. Thanks in advance

  Hi, I'm developing for a platform without a math library, so I need to build my own tools. My current way of getting the fraction is to convert the float to fixed point (multiply with (float)0xFFFF, cast to int), get only the lower part (mask with 0xFFFF) and convert it back to a float again. However, the imprecision is killing me. I'm using my Frac() and InvFrac() functions to draw an anti-aliased line. Using modf I get a perfectly smooth line. With my own method pixels start jumping around due to precision loss.   I am current in planning on creating a big database (2+ million rows) with a variety of data from separate sources. I would like to avoid structuring the database around auto_increment ids to help prevent against sync issues with replication, and also because each item inserted will have a alphanumeric product code that is guaranteed to be unique - it seems to me more sense to use that instead. I am looking at a search engine to index this database with Sphinx looking rather appealing due to its design around indexing relational databases. However, looking at various tutorials and documentation seems to show database designs being dependent on an auto_increment field in one form or another and a rather bold statement in the documentation saying that document ids must be 32/64bit integers only or things break. Is there a way to have a database indexed by Sphinx without auto_increment fields as the id?

  I currently keep my app code on S3 and have a startup.sh script which is fired via /etc/rc.local and installs the apps and any edits etc. Thus when I make a change, I need to reboot all my instances for the change to take effect. Is there a way to trigger the script without rebooting the instance? EDIT: I do not want to individually log into all my instances. I would prefer a method that I can script up to apply to all my instances at once - which are in an autoscaling group.

  Hello, I am trying to set up a navigation system that uses GET parameters with no value, example: http://foo.bar/?mainPage takes the visitor to the main page. So I am using if statements and I am wondering if there is a way I can do this without a bunch of if statements? I don't think switch statements would work for this. This is currently what I have: $mainPage = $_GET['mainPage']; $contact = $_GET['contact']; if(isset($mainPage)) { // go to main page } if(isset($contact)) { // go to contact page } I don't want to have to end up writing a ton of if statements, though. In my case I get 'OK' displayed even when I click on the red cross icon at the upper right corner. Is there a way I can have 'Do Nothing' displayed when I click on the cross. I not want to add any more buttons.

  I'm making a scoreboard for my game. And when I do a NSLog of the data it comes out as this: { name = TTY; score = "3.366347"; } So my question is how do I remove this brackets and also just grab the name (TTY) and score (3.36 without the quotations) and place them in variable for me to put into labels. Currently I can place them in labels but they have the lingering curly braces "{" and "}". Any hints would be helpful as I'm happy to search further I just don't know the vocab to search for it. thanks
