• Can't untar Testdisk 6.14 using live CD

  I'm using an Ubuntu LiveCD right now and need to recover files from a (Windows 7) partition. I've read about TestDisk and tried downloading it and untaring it but: testdisk-6.14-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I don't know why it doesn't work (noob). I tried using sudo apt-get install testdisk but: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package testdisk so.... HELP :D

  After installing Imagemagick, I've tested it with jpg image, like this: identify 1.jpg But, I got this result: identify: no decode delegate for this image format `1.jpg' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/550. Then, I tried to add support for JPEG format by: yum install libjpeg libjpeg-devel but, I got: Setting up Install Process No package libjpeg available. No package libjpeg-devel available. Nothing to do I thought I need to update the apt-get, I did: apt-get install libjpeg libjpeg-devel but, I got: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Render full-screen gradient or texture

  What's the simplest way to fill the background of the screen with a gradient or a texture in Direct3D 10/11? I'm building a Windows 8 metro app in which the camera never moves and I render some content in D3D, but I need to fill the background with something else than a solid color. Do I need to figure out the size and position of a rectangle and position it in 3D space or can I have some simpler solution? I don't care about depth at all, I don't use any depth buffer since all my content is sorted back to front, so I could just start by drawing to the background.

• migrating PR / rankings from one site to another

  Ive got a clients company site with decent PR, backlinks and search engines rankings. The client wants to change their comapany name and therfore URL, i will set up a rediect between the old site and the new site. But i was wandering is their a way to tell Google that they are moving while retaining all your rankings ? It is the same people, services, office building same everything just rebranded under a different name and url. Additionaly if their is a way to do this, how does google stop you buying expired domains and just pointing them onto your site, for instance i could buy several PR3 domains all relating to the same sector and point them at my site or would google catch on to this ?

  Bear with me, to be honest I have no idea what Wireless radio portions are.... At my school, I was told my the user support that the wireless network in my dorm uses 801.11 A/B/G/N. For some reason, the wireless in my room doesn't work. However, other buildings use only A/B/G, they say. In any other building, my wireless works fine. • October 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  It seemed very ironic that the day we have a presentation on the architecture of building applications for Windows 8 the Surface tablet is opened for pre-order.  Tom Benton started the evening enlightening the attendees on the user experience for those who had not seen it yet.  He even passed around his table from last year’s Build conference for everyone to play with.  This was followed with a tour of the capabilities and structures that make up a Windows Store App on Windows 8.  Taking it to its conclusion, he rounded out the discussion by covering the certification and deployment process. • Netbook partitioning scheme suggestions

  I got a new Asus EEE PC 1015PEM with 2GB RAM and a 250GB HD. After playing with the netbook edition a little, I would like to install the desktop edition I'm used to. In addition to ubunto partition(s), I would like to have one separate partition for data (documents, music, etc.), so I could try other OSs in the future without losing the data. What partition scheme would you recommend? I usually like to let the installation do it by itself, but when I try to that I can only use the entire disk, so I don't get the desired data partition. I wish there was a way to see the recommended default partitioning scheme, then just tweak it a bit to fit your needs (instead of building one from scratch). So, how would you recommend I partition my HD? Please be specific since I never manually partitioned before. Thanks!

  When teaching game development, my student's obsess about building realistic or complex art/models/animation. And spending wayyy to much time trying to get accurate collision detection between two 3D models [despite my best efforts] However I would like them to spend more time thinking about developing the game mechanics, interaction and game play. I'm looking for some games where the visuals are simple but have good game play. Things I am thinking about are Cubes' vs Spheres or Impossible Game. What are more examples of visually simple (preferably 3D) games to help inspire my students?

• Using Sql Server Change Data Capture with a frequently changing schema

  We are looking into enabling Sql Server Change Data Capture for a new subsystem we are building. It's not really because we need it, but we are being pushed for having a complete history traceability, and CDC would nicely solve this requirement with minimum effort on our parts. We are following an agile development process, which in this case means that we frequently make changes to the database schema, e.g. adding new columns, moving data to other columns, etc. We did a small test where we created a table, enabled CDC for that table, and then added a new column to the table. Changes to the new column is not registered in the CDC table. Is there a mechanism to update the CDC table to the new schema, and are there any best practices to how you deal with captured data when migrating the database schema?

• NetBeans 6.9 Released

  Great news, the first NetBeans release that has been conducted fully under the stewardship of Oracle has now been released. NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. With support for OSGi and Swing standards, the NetBeans Platform now supports the standard UI toolkit and the standard module system, providing a unique combination of standards for modular, rich-client development. Additional noteworthy features in this release include support for JavaFX SDK 1.3, PHP Zend framework, and Ruby on Rails 3.0; as well as improvements to the Java Editor, Java Debugger, issue tracking, and more. • Google webmaster tools / Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not.   There was a joke going round a few months(?) ago that if the GM industry kept up with the computer industry that we'd all be better off (in relation to driving and costs). There was also a counter joke that if Microsoft made Cars you would, for example, have to squeeze the wing mirror, honk the horn and move the gearstick the reboot the car (CTRL + ALT + DEL) This got me thinking in terms of Apple's recent iPad 2 release, if Apple made cars what would they be like? What sort of technological advancements would software developers and programmers be able to implement if you built a car in a similar fashion to building an iPhone app. Xcode is you Mechanics garage, as it were. What would a car look like if it was designed by Apple Chief of Design: Jonothan Ive?

• How do i clean up my harddrive?

  Not to long ago i was using only 35% of my HD. Just recently it shot up to 54% and my diskspace is 16gb so thats more then 3gigs that have been taken. From what i remember i failed to build mysql, i install gitolite which required me to build git from source which had a tons of dependencies (i think it was for building docs, i think i saw latex and other packages but i was drozy when i was installing). I suspect that is what is taking the diskspace. Anyways so far i deleted source folders i know i had and ran these commands. What else can i do? (3gigs is mighty) sudo apt-get autoclean sudo deborphan | xargs sudo apt-get -y remove --purge

In addition to Canon MX870 printer only shows "Processing" on the status LCD, I'm not sure if I successfully removed the old MX870 driver (I removed it by using Ubuntu Software Center), then I added a new PPA, apt-get update and then: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-mx870series Reading package lists... • Why should I use Bower? [closed]

  I can fully appreciate the benefits of a package manager like Python PIP, Node npm, or Ruby Gems since they're doing much more than adding files to your applications path. Maybe I'm missing the point, or I'm being obtuse, but here are the negatives I can see: Separate step when building a project Separate dependency to install via another package manager (yo dawg) More clutter in the projects root with bower.json and / or .bowerrc Reliance on the registry being up to date, correct, and available Some imports / references to things like images won't work The positives I can see are these: I don't have to download the dependencies manually Optionally install packages as part of scaffolding based on user prompts or the like I'd really like to know of any benefits I'm unaware of, and I should say I'm not trying to be provocative I genuinely want to know.
