  I do not mean any particular language or methodology. But basics( one have abstracted from ones experience and interaction with smarter people in this field) one should have including concepts, practical issues, tips/techniques/tricks one should be aware of.For example the lessons or ideas may relate to programming,testing,design,project schedules, that are really useful in daily life of software engineer/developer etc ? This may be a good question because it looks not to specific, however experience of many is better than reading from books.I find discussions much helpful than books.Hope every one will have some lessons/ideas to contribute.please substantiate with atleast one example.

  Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

• Left Join 3 Tables and Show True or False on Empty Cells

  Ok, this may be confusing so I hope I explain it correctly. I have 4 tables: business photos video category I want to display "featured" businesses on the home page (or elsewhere) and I want to show a Yes or No in the table row based upon whether or not there are photos or videos for that business. Example: Joes Crab Shack has no videos or photos but is featured. So, when his row is echoed out it will show the Business Name and Business Owner but there will be no data in the photo or video cells thus in the video and photos column it will say No. Otherwise, if the opposite was true, it would say Yes. Again I'm still new to this javascript thing, so just would like to know if there is another way of setting the values of an array (just like declaring it); //correct way of declaring an array and reusing var adata = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable adata[0] = '4'; adata[1] = '5'; adata[2] = '6' This part is my question; I want to declare the values of the array just like declaring them to minimize the number of lines; //array declaration var data = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable data = ['4','5','6']; ---> (as an example) I get an error msg "Invalid assignment left-hand side" is this possible? • Resources for widget creation

  My rails app is about to go live and I'm trying to figure out how to create a widget based on data on the site. My Javascript is not too hot--limited to the O'reilly head first book on JS. I can read simple Javascript okay but when it comes to writing it I'm a little lost. That said, I hope to roll out a widget, maybe a wordpress plugin too soon after my app is launched. Does anyone know of any rails plugins, javascript templates, tutorials or books that can get me going? I did ask a similar question before here: But my limited knowledge of JS kept me from implementing the suggested answer properly.

• Getting readline to block on a FIFO

  I create a fifo: mkfifo tofetch I run this python code: fetchlistfile = file("tofetch", "r") while 1: nextfetch = fetchlistfile.readline() print nextfetch It stalls on readline, as I would hope. I run: echo "test" > tofetch And my program doesn't stall anymore. It reads the line, and then continues looping forever. Why won't it stall again when there's no new data? I also tried looking on "not fetchlistfile.closed", I wouldn't mind reopening it after every write, but Python thinks the fifo is still open.

• how to flip Image in wpf

  Hello! I recently learned how to rotate a BitmapImage using the 'TransformedBitmap' and 'RotateTransformed' classes. Now I am able to perform clockwise rotations on my images. But how do I FLIP an image? I can't find the class(es) to perform horizontal and vertical flips of a BitmapImage. Please help me figure out how to do it. For instance, if my image was a drawing that looked like a 'd', then a vertical flip would result in something like a 'q', and a horizontal flip would result in something lika a 'b'.   I am trying to figure out a way to update my web.config for different environments by updating the configSource for the appSettings element in the web.config.   having to do with data integrity - I maintain a coldfusion database at a small shop that keeps addresses of different contacts. These contacts sometimes contain notes in them. When you are merging two duplicate contacts, one may be created in 2002 and one in 2008. If the contact in 2002 has notes prior to 2008, my question would be does it matter if you merge these contacts and keep the 2008 contact's ID number? Would that affect the data integrity or create any sort of issues with the notes earlier than 2008? I hope I've accurately described my scenario, as I am not familiar with the proper technical terms. I really appreciate the help sir!

• Drawing the UIPicker values from multiple components?

  I have the UIPicker setup with multiple components and a button below it. Depending on what the user has chosen with the UIPicker determines which new view will be loaded but I am having trouble determining how to extrapolate the information from the picker itself. Right now I have this method being called when the button is pressed: - (IBAction) buttonPressed { if (component:1 == 1 && component:2 == 1) { //Load the view number 1. } else if (component:1 == 2 && component:2 == 1) { //Load the view number 2. } else { //Load the view number 3. } } I obviously know that my code is wrong but I hope it gets the point across. I have multiple components and I need to figure out how to use the information that the user is scrolling to on the picker to determine which view to move to. (I know how to load the views, I just commented those in the code to illuminate the problem areas better.)

  Hi, I have a problem with my apache2 configuration and I hope someone here can help me. There is one server with one IP and a few domains. http://123.123.123.123 should have /var/www/123.123.123.123 as DocumentRoot http://www.domain1.com should have /var/www/domain1.com as DocumentRoot http://blog.domain1.com should have /var/www/blog.domain1.com as DocumentRoot http://www.domain2.com should have /var/www/domain2.com as DocumentRoot and http://bullshit.domain1.com along with all other non-existing subdomains on both domains should return a 404 page. What am I doing wrong? That can't be so hard, and I'm sure I had it working before... In my current config all subdomains show the /var/www/123.123.123.123. I guess because thats the first VirtualHost apache is reading.

• Hide horizontal scrollbar in IE 7 and below

  Hi all. Basically, I'm having trouble removing the horizontal scrollbar in Internet Explorer 7 and Below. I've tried the code below and It seems to work fine in every browser except IE. overflow-x: hidden; The even bigger problem is that, even though the scrollbar isn't even removed, it seems to completely screw the layout.. It somehow hides the majority of the page content in boxes 2 and 3? It also.. adds a second vertical scrollbar which moves relatively/absolute positioned items down?! I did contemplate just leaving the scrollbar in IE via a specified stylesheet, but even that seems to be messing with the page? The website is on a test directory here.. • Are there macro facility for Java or C#?

  Macros are useful. Therefore, I occasionally bemoan the absence of macros in Java and C#. Macros allow me to force in-line but allow me the code-manageability of non-macro code. Is there any Java- or C#-based project/product somewhere out there that effectively allow macros or specifying in-line expansion. I am thinking of something like @macro public void hello(int x){ ... } or when I call a method, an @inline annotation preceding the call would effect the called-method to be in-lined. or, should I need to know that I should just trust the compiler to make the best the decision for me that at the best of its analysis it might in-line a call. I hope this question will not lead to debating the pro/cons/usefulness of macros.

  I am using a WebBrowser-Control to fill in a webform and then click at a button, this currently results in a standard Download File Dialog (you get these if you download a file using internet explorer), but instead, I have to catch this file and save it automatically with a by me defined name to a specific folder. I am trying to code a little application in vb.net which download the Export-file from my wordpress-blog, and I want to do this completely without user-interaction. Currently everything works, except the downloading of the file. I tried to catch it with the event System.Windows.Controls.WebBrowser.Navigating(ByVal Object, ByVal System.Windows.Navigation.NavigatingCancelEventArgs) but I don't see where to download the file from :( I hope you guys can help me.

  Hello every one :) I wont to create a pdf from a form on my page, but the Problem is, I need it excactly like the page with form, all entires. So I have for example 2 Input Fields, 7 Radio, 2 Checkboxes, and as result i need a PDF with the same sructure, but if someone check the checkbox, it must be saved in pdf. I have tryed to save the html content of the page on submit, and save it first in html file, but the problem is, my selections woundn't be saved. The result must have the same as i would print my form. I hope someone can help. PS: I using PHP and jQuery

• C# detect page redirect

  I am trying to determine if a qualification exists on http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk in the form: http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk/qualification/50084811.seo.aspx 50084811 being a qualification aim entered by the end user. If they enter an invalid one e.g. http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk/qualification/50084911.seo.aspx They are redirected to an error page (with incorrect http headers as far as I can see). Is there a way to detect the redirect in C#. I would hope to be able to detect the redirect in http headers (thinking it will issue 2) or similar as oppose to having to download the whole page. This could be happening a lot so I would like to minimize traffic.

  My xml document reflects an Object. as referential Recursion is possible in objects and arrays. I need to reflect that in reproduced XML Structure too. Currently I am using Unique IDs to identify each node separately and a node like <recursion refer="IDREF"> and specifying the ID of the referenced Element. But in This way I need My Own Custom XPath resolver cause I want to let the users go deeper into the recursive node through the Identifying IDREF (Hope I am able to make you understand). So is there any better/liteweight solution ?? might be XPointer or XLink (I am not sure). Any help ??

  Hey All, I have just taken over a project for a client and the database schema is in a total mess. I would like to rename a load of fields make it a relationship database. But doing this will be a painstaking process as they have an API running of it also. So the idea would be to create a new database and start re-writing the code to use this instead. But I need a way to keep these tables in sync during this process. Would you agree that I should use MYSQL EVENT's to keep updating the new table on Inserts / updates & deletes??   So I have Image like this I want to get something like this (I hevent drawn all lines I want but I hope you can get my idea) I want to use SURF ( (Speeded Up Robust Features) is a robust image descriptor, first presented by Herbert Bay et al. in 2006 ) or something that is based on sums of 2D Haar wavelet responses and makes an efficient use of integral images for finding all straight lines on image. I want to get relative to picture pixel coords start and end points of lines. So on this picture to find all lines between tiles and thouse 2 black lines on top. Is there any such Code Example (with lines search capability) to start from? I love C and C++ but any other readable code will probably work for me=)

• How to create a container that holds different types of function pointers in C++?

  I'm doing a linear genetic programming project, where programs are bred and evolved by means of natural evolution mechanisms. Their "DNA" is basically a container (I've used arrays and vectors successfully) which contain function pointers to a set of functions available. Now, for simple problems, such as mathematical problems, I could use one type-defined function pointer which could point to functions that all return a double and all take as parameters two doubles. Unfortunately this is not very practical. I need to be able to have a container which can have different sorts of function pointers, say a function pointer to a function which takes no arguments, or a function which takes one argument, or a function which returns something, etc (you get the idea)... Is there any way to do this using any kind of container ? Could I do that using a container which contains polymorphic classes, which in their turn have various kinds of function pointers? I hope someone can direct me towards a solution because redesigning everything I've done so far is going to be painful.

• simple blog engine for website

  I know that there's a lot of free open source blog engine out there such as BlogEngine.NET. However that's an overkill for my purpose... I so far has created my own simple one by storing posts in a .xml file and so every time the main page loads it reads from all those xml files and displays it as posts. Now my problem is when a user clicks on a post title I want it to show on a new page(.aspx), so if the title is X then I want a new page called X.aspx when the user clicks on the title on the homepage. I hope this makes sense. My question is how do I create such thing?
