• Windows development: x86 to x64 transition

  Hi everybody. Are there any guidelines how to transit to x64 with as little pain as possible? Suppose, I have a windows native x86 executable written in C++. The EXE works fine by itself, but there is also DLL that is hosted by both, the former EXE and an outside x64 process. With setup like this, what parts would I need to rewrite? I would appreciate a more general answer or maybe a link to a reference where some theoretical background is given. Thanks

• How can I find out how much memory an instance of a C++ class consumes?

  Hi, I am developing a Graph-class, based on boost-graph-library. A Graph-object contains a boost-graph, so to say an adjacency_list, and a map. When monitoring the total memory usage of my program, it consumes quite a lot (checked with pmap). Now, I would like to know, how much of the memory is exactly consumed by a filled object of this Graph-class? With filled I mean when the adjacency_list is full of vertices and edges. I found out, that using sizeof() doesn't bring me far. Using valgrind is also not an alternative as there is quite some memory allocation done previously and this makes the usage of valgrind impractical for this purpose. I'm also not interested in what other parts of the program cost in memory, I want to focus on one single object. Thank you.

  I asked this on the MEF Codeplex forum already, but I haven't gotten a response yet, so I figured I'd try StackOverflow. Here's the original post if anyone's interested (this is just a copy from it): MEF Codeplex "Let me first say that I'm completely new to MEF (just discovered it today) and am very happy with it so far. However, I've ran in to a problem that is very frustrating. I'm creating an app that will have a plugin architecture and the plugins will only be stored in a single DLL file (or coded into the main app). The DLL file needs to be able to be recompiled during run-time and the app should recognize this and re-load the plugins (I know this is difficult, but it's a requirement). To accomplish this I took the approach covered http://blog.maartenballiauw.be/category/MEF.aspx there (look for WebServerDirectoryCatalog). Basically the idea is to "monitor the plugins folder, copy the new/modified assemblies to the web application’s /bin folder and instruct MEF to load its exports from there." So now at this point I should be able to re-compile the plugins DLL, drop it in to the Plugins folder, my FileWatcher detect that it's changed, and then copy it into folder "2" and directoryCatalog should point to the new folder. All this actually works! The problem is, even though it seems like every thing is pointed to the right place, my IEnumerable variable is never updated with the new plugins. So close, but yet so far! Any suggestions? I know the downsides of doing it this way, that no dll is actually getting unloaded and causing a memory leak, but it's a Windows App and will probably be started at least once a day, and the plugins are un-likely to change that often, but it's still a requirement from the client that it does this without re-loading the app. Thanks!   Recently, I was going around looking for ideas on what I can build using C this summer and I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1257376/interesting-project-to-learn-c Implement a programming language. This doesn't have to be terribly hard - I did the language that must not be named - but it will force you to learn a lot of the important parts of C. If you don't want to write a lexer and/or parser yourself, you can use lex/flex and yacc/bison, but if you plan on that you might want to start with a somewhat smaller project. I was kinda intrigued about the implementing a programming language answer and I'm wondering how do I go about starting this? I've gone through the whole K&R book and I've done some of the exercises as well. I also have a bit of experience in C++ and Java if that matters. Any tips? Thanks!

• Camel | Need for Scheduling console

  I am using camel 2.9.0 in my project. We have a number of routes divided into different camel contexts. Each camel context is bundled separately and deployed in Apache Karaf. Now the problem is divied into 2 parts: 1.) Each route is a scheduled route. Although using Quartz component, we are able to define a cron expressio in each route, we want a console where in we can trigger,stop any route and also put a cron expression to any route.(Scheduling a route through a web console is our main objective). 2.) Also we tried to configure the cron expression for each route through quartz.property. But if someone wants to change the cron expression at runtime in Apache Karaf, then we have to stop the bundle deployed and start in again. What can be done to change the value of cron expression at runtime. Any replies and help would be appreciable. Piyush

• Breaking One Big Graphic of MutablePaths into CAShapeLayers

  I have a class called GraphicView that takes a Graphic object and draws it in its drawRect method. This Graphic object is basically an array of mutablePaths that comprise an icon that I want drawn. For performance and other issues, I was thinking of taking this icon that is comprised of mutablePaths, and dividing it into a bunch of CAShapeLayers. I'm wondering is this possible? Considering the points for the mutablePaths of the icon are all interwoven together (ie the icon was initially an SVG file that I converted to code), is it possible to divide different parts of the icon into CAShapeLayers, and reassemble them all together when assigning to the views layer? If so how would it be done? If I assign them as sublayers to a CALayer or CAShapeLayer, will it understand to mesh them all together?

• Replace Spring.Net IoC with another Container (e.g. Ninject)

  Hey all, I'm curious to know if it's possible to replace Spring.Net's built-in IoC container with Ninject. We use Ninject on my team for IoC in our other projects so I would like to continue using that container if possible. Is this possible? Has anyone written a Ninject-Spring.Net Adapter?? • Echo html+php from database

  I am working on a site which deals with a lot of texts in HTML, so recently I learned PHP and moved them into a MySQL database and echo the contents given a specific chapter and section. Now this works relatively fine, the HTML shows up properly. However, in some parts I have included PHP function calls, and these doesn't seem to be evaluated - rather, they get just inserted into the source code (and thus invisible for the page viewer), never doing anything. They did work when they were simple .html files. How can I solve this? For example, a text can look like this: <?php printChapterName(); ?> <p>Some text</p> ... <?php showImage($name, $alt-text); ?> ... This just shows the text on the page. Edit: The functions are echo:ing some HTML.

• Background subtracting in MATLAB

  I'm looking to do background subtracting on an image. I'm new to MATLAB and new to image processing/analysis, so sorry if any of this sounds stupid. 1) Other than imsubtract() are there other ways to do background subtracting (besides comparing one image to another)? 2) In the Math Works explanation for imsubtract() why do they make their structuring element a disk? This seems rather difficult so far because every time I try something, I end up not only subtracting the noisy background but also losing the parts of the image I want to look at!

  Hi, I have a really strange problem. I need to build custom sqlite3 database engine under Android OS, but I also want to use database provider implementation. Unfortunately when examining sources of Android 1.6 I noticed that it's not so easy. Many classes including android.database.; packages use original provider, also many other parts of framework use android.database.sqlite.; packages directly, wich ofcourse make this abstraction a bit confusing and unnesesary. But going to my question. If there is any way that I could extend database interfaces to use custom implmentation of sqlite (or any other database)?

• Editing PHP using PHP (admin center)

  Hello, Am developing an admin center where I can edit configuration files (written in PHP). I do NOT want to store these values in a mySQL table (for various reasons). So say my config.php has contents like: <?php $option1 = 1; $option2 = 2; $option4 = 5; $option7 = array('test','a','b',c'); ?> Now say in one of the admin pages I will only be changing a few values like option2 or option4 etc. Any ideas on what would be the best way to go about this. I know one option is to read the PHP file completely and write parts of it using REGEX. Any way to make this more efficent? I don't want the config.php file to break because of some error on the user's end. Any ideas on how to ensure that it works?

• ASP.NET Membership controls (can I see inside?)

  Hello, I am looking at ASP.NET membership controls (2008) and have been dropping them onto web pages to see how it all works. In some ASP.NET starter kit web site examples that I downloaded, I notice that between the asp:control tags I can see all the tags of the constituent parts like the textboxes, labels and buttons etc. However with the membership control that I am using in 2008 I do not see these other tags. Is this because the starter kit examples are from an older version or is it possible to expose these inner tags? It seems that this would make it possible to customize the controls. • Are there design-time watch windows for Visual Studio 2008/2010?

  There are many times when I need to test a little snippet of .net code but rebuilding and publishing the entire project or writing a suite of unit tests just seems like overkill. For example, I am writing a regular expression right now and I want to see if it the pattern is matching on the right parts. I could go and find a million other utilities that do that sort of thing, but that is not exactly my point. FireBug has an exact analogue to what I want - the FireBug console. There is a text box where the user can enter some JavaScript and FireBug will execute it on the spot and display the return value. I would love to be able to enter something like (new Regex("b+")).Replace("abc", "x") and see the results without having to do all the overhead. Does VS have anything like this?

• looking for RTF template system with simple DSL

  Is there any framework that fills up rtf document with data? The idea is to make business people/testers change the document in MsWord and than generate reports from that. The problem is with tables, Id need to create some special DSL for handling tables and showing hidding text/page parts. Id rather not do that and use some existing solution. I tried to search for something, but I only found frameworks that can produce rtf output from xml input and i want to use rtf as input and output.

• Can I have sinatra not read the entire request body into memory?

  Say I have a sinatra route ala: put '/data' do request.body.read [...] end It appears that the entire request.body is read into memory. Is there a way to consume the body as it comes into the system, rather than having it all buffered in Rack/sinatra beforehand? I see I can do this to read the body in parts, but the entire body still seems to be read into memory beforehand. put '/data' do while request.body.read(1024) != nil [...] end [...] end

• Java Or C++ Or What???

  Hi, My friends and I are starting a new project and we are shifting from windows to linux (for some reasons) and all of us are .Net background. for the new platform I decided to go with Java since many parts are similar with .Net but my friend is insisting on C++ saying it is much faster very mature and working with it will not effect on the productivity and development speed. The project that we will work on it will have threading, extensive string and datetime manipulation, some socket programing and of-course work with RDBMS (MySql Or Postgre not decided yet). I have some fears with java since oracle acquired sun and these people will do anything to make money out of it. some have advised in python and ruby and I like python but don't know should I make it the default language in this project. the project is not web application and we will make services and executables. what do you think, if you have other opinion you very welcome. Hint: Mono is not an option

• Get name of property as a string

  I'm trying to improve the maintainability of some code involving reflection. The app has a .NET Remoting interface exposing (among other things) a method called Execute for accessing parts of the app not included in its published remote interface. Here is how the app designates properties (a static one in this example) which are meant to be accessible via Execute: RemoteMgr.ExposeProperty("SomeSecret", typeof(SomeClass), "SomeProperty"); So a remote user could call: string response = remoteObject.Execute("SomeSecret"); and the app would use reflection to find SomeClass.SomeProperty and return its value as a string. Unfortunately, if someone renames SomeProperty and forgets to change the 3rd parm of ExposeProperty(), it breaks this mechanism. I need to the equivalent of: SomeClass.SomeProperty.GetTheNameOfThisPropertyAsAString() to use as the 3rd parm in ExposeProperty so refactoring tools would take care of renames. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance.

• Is there any memory restrictions on an ASP.Net application? HttpHandler?

  I have an ASP.Net MVC application that allows users to upload images. When I try to upload a really large file (400MB) I get an error. I assumed that my image processing code (home brew) was very inefficient, so I decided I would try using a third party library to handle the image processing parts. Because I'm using TDD, I wanted to first write a test that fails. But when I test the controller action with the same large file it is able to do all the image processing without any trouble. The error I get is "Out of memory". I'm sure my code is probably using a lot more memory than it needs to but I just want to know why my test passes. The other difference is that I'm using SWFUpload which is not used with the test. Could this be the cause?

• Can I use .NET 4 Code Contracts and remain compatible with .NET 3.5?

  .NET 4 introduced Code Contracts as a new feature. I'd like to use CC, but provide files that can still run in 3.5 SP1. Is that possible? Can I only use parts of the new functionality? Apparently it is possible to have CC only do static checks without being included in the binary files, is that correct? I'm aware CC was available for 3.5 as separate module, is this a feasible workaround in case I can't use the 4 version of CC? Is there a difference in the feature set?
