• Question about malware-sites: How can I be in danger?

  Hi people!! My english is horrible but i will do the best to be as accurate as posible. I have been reading here (in superuser) some questions about the necessity of antivirus software in Windows and some doubts arise. As far as i know (and imagine) virus software can only be harmful if I download any type of infected executable file and then I RUN IT. I mean that if i have the infected executable in my desktop but i leave it there for years without clicking it, I won't be in danger... My question is: How can i be in danger browsing the so called "malware pages or sites"??. If i am just browsing an "infected site" how could I be affected by a virus. In any moment the browser is asking me for the permission to download "something", so how could it be?? Although i don't give permission to the browser to download 'something' is data being downloaded to my computer?? Its some kind of cookie? I will ask in another way... What is the level of riskiness if i get inffected in a malware site compared with the level of an executable virus?? Thanks a lot!

• Cannot get Windows snipping tool to auto run with AutoHotKey

  I am trying to get Windows 7 sniping tool to run when I hit my PRINTSCREEN keyboard button with AUTOHOTKEY. I have been unsuccessful so far though. Here is what I have for the AutoHotKey script. I have tried this PRINTSCREEN::Run, c:\windows\system32\SnippingTool.exe and this PRINTSCREEN::Run, SnippingTool.exe and this PRINTSCREEN::Run, SnippingTool And all those give me this error when I hit the PRINTSCREEN button... It basicly says it cannot find the file, however the file path seems to be correct, I can copy paste it into a window and it opens the snipping tool, any ideas why it will not work? • How do I use a Minitel terminal as a linux dumb terminal

  I recently purchased a US version of the Alcatel Minitel terminal. I think it's a 1B version. Pictures of it here: I tried connecting a null modem to the 25 pin port on the back and plugging it into a linux box running agetty but I couldn't get it to show any signs of being connected. I used Google Translate to translate this document into English: http://mirabellug.org/wikini/upload/Documentations_minitel.pdf As far as I can tell, you take it out of videotex mode by typing Fcnt-T A, then turn off local echo with Fcnt-T E, then set it to 4800 baud with Fcnt-P 4. I presume Fcnt refers to the "CTRL" key on my terminal. But I think I'm doing something wrong, because it doesn't look like it's recognising the keystrokes, because "Fcnt-T A" just prints the letter A to the screen, which is not what you'd expect a function key combo to do. Has anyone used these minitel terminals as a linux terminal, and if so, please can you share how to configure the minitel to run as a terminal ? Is the 25 pin plug even the correct port to use ? I read something online that indicated you're supposed to use the 5 pin DIN plug instead, is that right ? If so, what's the 25 pin plug for ? If I am supposed to use the DIN plug, does anyone know the pinouts so I can make a cable ?

• Parsing text files

  I encountered a situation tonight where I wanted to parse a text file. I had a very, very long word list that contained English words delimited by lines. I wanted to get rid of every word (or line) that was longer than 7 characters. This would be simple in Linux but I can't seem to find a simple solution in WindowsXP. I tried using Notepad++ regular expression search but that was a huge failure. I tried using the expression .{6,} without finding any matches. I'm really at a loss because I thought this sort of thing would be extremely easy and there would be tons of tools to accomplish a task like this. It seems like Notepad++ supports every other feature in the world except the very basic ones that seem the most obvious. Another one of my goals was to put some code before and after the word on each line. aardvark apple azolio would turn into INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('aardvark'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('apple'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('azolio'); What suggestions/tools/tips do you have to accomplish tasks similar to this in WindowsXP?

• Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

  I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

• Typing Japanese on Windows Vista with Dvorak

  I'm using Windows Vista, and I type English with the Dvorak keyboard layout, and I want to be able to type Japanese text that way, too. I've figured out how to set it up to let me type Japanese here, but it uses QWERTY. What I've got so far is: click the "EN" in the taskbar, and select "JP" if the letter that appears in the taskbar is "A", hit alt-~ to change it to "?" type as if I was typing Romaji on a QWERTY keyboard, (e.g., left pinky home row, right ring finger top row), and hiragana appear (??) press spacebar to convert to kanji (e.g., ?), and return to accept That all works great, but it assumes I'm on QWERTY, which isn't very comfortable for me. I want everything the same, but to be able to type kana with Dvorak (e.g., left pinky home row, left ring finger home row - ??). I can do this on Mac OS, so it's not an unheard-of feature. But it was kind of an obscure setting to find, so I figure on Windows it's probably a really obscure setting. :-) But I haven't been able to find it yet. Thanks!

  I want to create a simple load balancer for the two servers. The problem is with CNAME records, I think. Let's say I have two the same applications on AppFog.com. app1.aws.af.cm and app2.aws.af.cm Here is my haproxy.cfg file: global maxconn 2000 daemon defaults mode http clitimeout 60000 srvtimeout 30000 contimeout 4000 option httpclose listen http_proxy bind [myip]:80 mode http stats enable stats auth user:passwd stats uri /stats balance source option httpchk option forwardfor server host01 app1.aws.af.cm:80 maxconn 300 check server host02 app2.aws.af.cm:80 maxconn 300 check But this only resolving IP for domain app1.aws.af.cm and app2.aws.af.cm, which obviously doesn't work if I open this IP in web browser. The problem is that AppFog doesn't have public IP for application (same as OpenShift). How to do that Haproxy to perform a proper connection between Load Balancer and this two servers? Example: This is real app - http://freechat.eu01.aws.af.cm Haproxy only resolves IP for this domain which is 46.51.204.8:80 Of course this IP will not show my application, only an error page. Sorry for my poor English.

• Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip

  After approximately 5-15 min of listening to music my subwoofer begins to make terrible noises. He's just "coughing". That began after 6 months I had this computer. Now I found out, that I can temporarily fix this problem by "restarting" the audio stream of the application that plays music. For example reloading last.fm page (reloads the flash file). Another way to reset the audio playback is switching the speaker configuration shown below in the screenshot. According to many posts on the internet like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/52918-20-acer-aspire-6935g-speaker-problem ACER support isn't any help Exchanging hardware doesn't fix the problem Even the later models have this problem Turning off the volume of the subwoofer is not an option to me. I still have warranty (I bought an extension of one year). I already tried about 15 versions of the Realtek driver with no success. I am not sure but MAYBE the problem did not occur on the original windows vista that was shipped with this computer. However, I removed the original windows for good reasons (english). What do you suggest me? Did anyone fix this problem? Maybe by writing a script which resets the audio streams every 5 minutes? Shall I take the effort to deal with the acer support until they give me another model? (I won't have a computer than for a longer time, will spend money on telephone hotlines (1,30 EUR / min)......)   Hey there. I'm building my own computer, and i just finished picking out all of my parts. Now i just want to be sure it'll all work before i order it. I'm mean specifically if the RAM & Graphic card will fit on the motherboard i chose. Below is a list of all parts. • avconv gets killed if mkv has subtitles

  What I'm trying to do is to take a movie (in an Matroska container), convert all audio tracks to AC3 and don't touch anything else. • convert decrypted .vobs to .avi with ffmpeg on ubuntu

  I have a .vob file that has bee ripped from a dvd, when I watch the .vob its very good quality video and 5.1 english audio but when I use ffmpeg it has rubbish video and mono french audio. That was using this command: ffmpeg -i /samba/ripping/vobs/12161840#2.vob -f avi /samba/ripping/avis/test.avi I've tried a few different variations on that but it never comes back with anything good just bigger files with bad video and incorrect sound. • Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

  I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english.. • Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

• Windows 2012 RDS Temporary profile for Administrator

  I've configured a Windows 2012 RDS Farm with two virtual servers (VMWare - each one on a different ESX server). Both servers have Licensing, Web Access, Gateway, Connection Broker and Session Host roles. High Availability is set up and it works fine. Remote Apps are working and even Windows XP clients have access to the web interface. User profile path is \vmfiles1\UserProfileDisks\App\ and almost everyone has full right access to it. The problem I have is that I would like to be able to access both servers at the same time with the Administrator account (console), but each time I try, the second server that I logon to give me access with a temporary profile. I tried to enable/disable multiple sessions per user and forced Admin logoff with the GPO but nothing changed. Another thing is that the server pool is not saved, so each time I restart the RDS server or I logoff from it, I have to add a server in the server manager. Do you have any idea? Sorry if my english is not perfect.

• What are some of the best answer file settings for a WDS Deployment?

  I've had my head buried in answer files for days now and have gotten quite comfortable setting them up, test, etc... I use a handful of Components to help my migrations, for my unattend.xml I like: Windows-International-Core-WinPE -- this is good for setting Locales the preboot environment (en-us for us english US speakers). Keeps me from having to set these on the initial image boot. Windows-Setup_neutral -- I like the WindowsDeploymentServices -> ImageSelection, especially if I'm only pushing a single image. This keeps me from having to select it each time. My OOBE_Unattend.xml is really useful and I barely have to touch anything during this part of the installation: Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral -- This lets me put a ProductKey in for my MAK volume license (very useful and time saving). I can also set the TimeZone for the installation. Windows UnattendedJoin_neutral -- I couldn't live without this component. It joins the machine on my domain before logging in as a domain administrator. I would hate to not have this ability. Windows-International-Core -- Again this component really speeds up the OOBE process. I configure my locals and time zone so I don't have to do it by hand when the machine enteres OOBE. Windows-Shell-Setup -- Allows you to configure an autologon when the new machine is finished. I like to logon as a domain admin automatically for customizing and troubleshooting the new machine immediately after it is imaged. Also the OOBE component under here lets me skip the EULA, Hide Wireless Setup, and set my default NetworkLocation. All of this makes the entire OOBE totally automated. What are some other good components I am missing as far as helping me get these images pushed and configured as quickly as possible?

• GtkView GtkSpell and myspell backend

  Hi I have an IM client pidgin. It is launched under locale ru_RU.UTF-8 Then when I type messages in GtkView widget it highlights the misspelled words. However it uses a GtkSpell which uses enchant, which uses myspell backend (I provided it with symlink to openoffice dictionaries folder /usr/share/enchant/myspell -- /usr/share/myspell/dict). Now the problem is that whichever language I use - it still uses ru_RU language to select the dictionary, so all english text is being underlined as a misspelled text. When I switch locale to en_US and then launch pidgin under it - then all russian text becomes misspelled. I don't like this behaviour as I use pidgin to chat in both languages. Is there a way to somehow setup enchant/myspell so that it searches in both dictionaries en_US and ru_RU independent of the locale I launched pidgin (GtkView) in ? I have Debian lenny/5.0.1 distro. enchant version 1.5.0. /usr/share/enchant/enchant.ordering looks like this: *:myspell meaning that for all languages backend is myspell myspell dictionary.lst file looks like this: DICT en GB en_GB DICT en US en_US THES en US th_en_US_v2 THES en GB th_en_US_v2 THES ru RU th_ru_RU_v2 DICT ru RU ru_RU DICT uk UA uk DICT ru RU en_US

• Why does Google Chrome ignore "last_known_google_url" property in "Local State" file?

  I want to force my Google Chrome web browser (version 21.0.1180.89, 64-bit) to use non-localized search (thus google in english) through address bar, using the default Google search engine. To achieve that, I have to change value of the property last_known_google_url to https://www.google.com/?hl=en& in Local State file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Local State). In that file, there should be the property: "browser": { "last_known_google_url": but it is not. Even if I add there the property, it has no impact on search - Google Chrome does not use the property and still searches in localized version. Another option is to put the property to Preferences file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Preferences) - which works perfectly when I start Google Chrome and do some search - but just after that, the property (actually the whole Preferences file) is overriden, so "the most important" trailing part ?hl=en& of the property value is removed - and without it, the non-localized search does not work anymore. Why does Google Chrome ignore last_known_google_url property in Local State file?

  The mysql daemon is getting killed because Linux is reaching out of memory: Oct 24 07:41:23 <hostname> kernel: [82297.673701] Out of memory: kill process 13816 (mysqld) score 1839626 or a child There is a link with some workaround on this. That only happen when executing a query INSERT ... SELECT with a very huge resulset. MySQLTuner script displays that maximum theorical memory is less than 8GB, but top and munim shows that is getting over all RAM and swap available: [--] Total buffers: 560.0M global + 72.2M per thread (100 max threads) [OK] Maximum possible memory usage: 7.6G (43% of installed RAM) I'm tried to tune some options with not results, there are the relevant ones: skip-locking max_connections = 100 key_buffer_size = 512M max_allowed_packet = 32M table_open_cache = 2000 open_files_limit = 3000 sort_buffer_size = 16M read_buffer_size = 16M read_rnd_buffer_size = 8M myisam_sort_buffer_size = 64M thread_cache_size = 4 query_cache_size = 16M query_cache_limit = 2M thread_concurrency = 4 join_buffer_size = 32M tmp_table_size = 32M max_heap_table_size = 32M query_cache_limit = 8M bulk_insert_buffer_size = 64M myisam_max_sort_file_size = 50GB myisam_mmap_size = 10GB And there is a system resume: OS: Linux Debian "Squeeze" 6.0.8 (upgraded yesterday) RAM: 18GB Swap: 18GB MySQL: 5.1.72-2 (official Debain release) At this moment, update or change OS or MySQL version is not possible, there is any option that can help and i missed? • Why we can change our IP address?

  I across some websites that offer change of our IP addresses. It says, we can surf net anonymously, including changing our IP address and location. Most of the softwares are not free, so I have not try it out yet. But my question is, so, IP addresses will no longer be unique or valid for identify which computer were sending/request the information? I though only the ISP can determine our IP, so we can change our IP from some commercial softwares huh? Case: If I change my IP address, I go to a website which is supposed to be banned by my country, will the ISP let me pass the check and I will be able to browse the website which should be blocked? another question: From what I know, if we want to go to certain website, here is the flow: My Computer = ISP = Website = ISP = My computer I am not sure, if its the correct flow, but I am sure that, whichever website I want to visit, I need to go through my ISP, isnt it?. So if we change out IP, our ISP will record our new IP or the original(assigned-by-ISP) IP? Sorry for my bad English.

  Hello i really did all what i know to install the PostgreSQL 9.3.4 on my windows 2003 server x64, but i'm always stopped with this error : please see the error : http://oi57.tinypic.com/s4tb8i.jpg I really don't know what to do , if i click OK then when i go to the windows services list i don't find the PostgreSQL service so i can't Start the service . can any one please help me to install it correctly .   NB: I am aware that this question is subjective, as it can't be defined precisely, but the answers should still be "objective": Country name, and what makes it legally safer. EDIT: A) I am located in Germany. B) I am NOT looking for a place to offer pirated Software/Media; no binary on my site, except "profile icon". Hello! I want to start publishing "social" websites / apps, and I found that the biggest initial problem is this: Any and all services I have to depend on, including Domain Registrar, DNS provider, Server/Cloud Provider, CDN Provider, ... even my Insurance Agent, basically say that they can "throw me out" if my website contains "unacceptable" content. It's always phrased in such a way that basically anything can fall under "unacceptable" content. This is very frustrating because you just can't fully control what users post on your "social website", and you so you basically have to expect when you go to bed that your site is going to be gone when you wake up. I've heard a lot of horror stories about this. Since the "Terms Of Service" of all those providers are foremost to protect themselves from legal actions, and those legal actions depend on the country where they are located, it seems like the first step is to find which country is the "safest" to locate a site. "Safest" being defined as, where I am least likely to get in legal trouble with the local authorities, if some user posts something unacceptable in some way. The main restriction is that it should also be a "well-connected" country, because there is no point in being "safe", if my users can't get to my sites, or the latency is unacceptable. I am targeting the English speaking people in any country as my future users.

• Problem with Outlook 2010 (SMTP AUTH LOGIN)

  **IGNORE THIS QUESTION - SOLVED WITH A PYTHON SCRIPT available at: http://yabahaus.blogspot.com I have to connect one customer Outlook 2010 to a remote server on which I have either no right, neither way to talk to the sysadmin. This is the thing, after installing and reviewing the logs on Wireshark: Outlook Express: HELO machine AUTH LOGIN username base64 encoded password base64 encoded mails go through. Outlook 2010: HELO machine AUTH DIGEST-MD5 response from server Outlook sends just a * AUTH LOGIN password base64 encoded So... I can send mails in the same domain, but can't send outside, it gives me a relay denied message. My point is... Why the h**l Outlook 2010 doesn't send the username AND the password?! It can never login the right way :| With other versions of Outlook it works fine, and with OE works great, it auths and allows to send mail to a different domain. I've googled and nothing worked. I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone with this one. My last resort will be to configure a local proxy/server that relays to the original one :| Any help would be appreciated. • Torrent upload ratio not updated on Synology DS212+

  I have a Synology DS212+ NAS running DSM 4.2-3211 (current version). I use it for several purposes including torrent download using Download Station and a tracker that needs authentication. My problem is that my download/upload ratio isn't updated, so it constantly falls down. My NAS is behind a router, and I configured the NAT to forward ports 6890 to 6999 to the internal IP address of the NAS. Here are the Download Station settings : TCP port : 6990, Sharing ratio : 900%, Sharing time : infinite, max download speed : 0 (no limit), max upload speed : 0 (no limit), BT protocol encryption : checked, max numbers of peers allowed by torrent file : 4000, DHT : checked, with port 6889. When the DHT option is not checked, the NAS doesn't upload any files. I don't know what is this option for. Can someone help me to solve this problem ? Did I miss any step, or does it come from the NAT ? How is the authentication managed by Dowload Station ? (Sorry for my english) Thanks.

• Windows is very slow with my new SSD

  I have a laptop HP probook 4520s with Core i5 M480 @ 2.67Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 640 GB HDD Radeon HD 6370m 1GB video card. It would seem like a good stack for work, right? But My HDD has crashed after everyday walking with laptop about 1 year. After buying my new SSD (Patriot memory - Torqx II 128 Gb SATA II) and installing new Windows 8 from scratch - it was amazing fast. But I had only install windows updates, and I feel that the speed become the same as my old HDD, after install other software for my work, it becomes so slow, so when I use my PC with old lower configuration and it really works better than my awesome laptop... I checked that TRIM and AHCI mode are turned on. So why's that? I asked for help in Patriot Memory support, they suggested to send them ATTO test results, done, sent. Here is the response: "Thank you very much for the attached results. Looking at the results, I can see that your SSD speed is a lot lower than it should be. Can you tell me your system specs?" Until they checked my email, I re-installed Windows 8 to Windows 7 and it was again perfect, but the story repeats it becomes slower and slower after every installing new software. Check out some screenshots.. (sorry for the screenshot with russian TaskManager, I hope you will recognize those parameters accordingly with your english or other lang TaskManager) So the main issue that something everytime loads the disc on 100% and the response time is jumping around 1000-3000 ms. Why am I asking about Windows? Because I tried to install Linux Mint (x86) and It just flies. So great performance independent on how many programs I have installed. Only Windows (any 7 or 8) has this problem. So guys, I appreciate any ideas about how to fix that and may be answers of main question - "why is it so.?" Thanks!
