• FIX adapter for StreamInsight

  Over the last couple of month, Rapid Addition, a leading FIX and FAST solutions provider for the financial services industry, has been working closely with the StreamInsight team to enable StreamInsight Complex Event Processing queries to receive input feeds from Rapid Addition’s FIX engine and to send result events back into FIX. Earlier today, Toby Corballis from Rapid Addition blogged about these capabilities here on HedgeHogs. We are very excited to demonstrate these capabilities at the SIFMA conference in New York. • Python or C server hosting for indie development

  I've written a lot of the game, but it's singleplayer. Now we want to join up and play together. I want to host it like an MMO, but haven't got any personal ability to host (no static IPs or direct access to a reasonable router that will allow me to port forward) so I wondered if there were any free / very cheap hosting solutions for people developing games that need to develop their MMO side. In my case it's a world server for a 2D game where the world map can be changed by the players. So, GAE sounds expensive, as there would be quite a few updates per second (I heard they bill for data updates but not for download, but can't find refernce to billing anywhere on the FAQs) I'd prefer to be able to write the server in python as that's what the game is written in (with pygame), but C is fine, and maybe even better as it might prompt me to write some more performant world generator code ;)

• Optimizing graphics for an iOS flash game

  A friend of mine and myself are working on a flash developed iOS (and later Android) puzzle board game. He's a developer and I'm a designer/developer so (no surprise) we have different points of view. His method: make small tiles (100x100px) in Photoshop join them into the board and then in flash apply effects to the board to avoid repetition (80's not in the good way). My method: precompose the whole board (960x640px+bleed) in Photoshop and than mask active and inactive areas in flash. What do you think?

  Chrome Apps + Native Client Did you know that you can use Native Client inside a Chrome App? Join +John Mccutchan and +Pete LePage as they introduce Native Client Acceleration Modules (NaCl AM) which expose C++ libraries to JavaScript programs. NaCl AMs can, be used for bulk data processing (compression, encryption) but they also work well in interactive applications that require low latency. We'll explain how to build a NaCl Acceleration Module and demo a Bullet Physics engine running inside a Chrome App with a NaCl AM interacting with an HTML and JavaScript UI using three.js. • ubuntu 12.04.3 - Reverse DNS issue - slow ping interval but normal ping value

  i'm running ubuntu 12.04.3 x86 desktop in my corporation environment. I join the corp domain by Likewise open. But when I ping another pc, say hostname is pc-test, "ping pc-test" or "ping pc-test.domain.name" returns slow interval (about 5 seconds) but the ping value is below 1 ms. When I use "ping -n pc-test", everything works well. So I conclude this is about reverse DNS issue. how to fix this issue? many thanks! Edit: In my understanding, reverse DNS issue is related to DNS server or Wins server, not only an ubuntu issue, is this right? if I wanna fix this issue as much as possible on ubuntu but not on network servers, what to do?

• JavaOne and Oracle Open World Community Run - Monday, Oct 1, 6:17am PT

  Following the tradition from last year, inviting all JavaOne and Oracle Open World attendees to run with me in one of the 10 best cities to run in the US. The running route will start at Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero, go through Fisherman's Wharf, straight up Hyde St, couple of loops around Crooked Street and then back the same route to end at Ferry Plaza. Here is the complete clickable map: The Hyde Street (~300ft in 0.75 miles) and Lombard (~200 ft in 0.15 mile) are challenging elevations and you may cover them once only. Alternatively you may take a simpler route out-and-back by running further up to Marina and Crissy Field. When ? Monday, Oct 1, 2012 I plan to leave at 6:17am PT from the starting point and certainly hope you can join me. Oracle is doing several things to keep Oracle Open World and JavaOne sustainable and reduce the conference footprint. Lets do our share to keep the conference green!
