• Detecting damage done by virus

  This morning after I went to college, a virus infected my PC without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagnosed with was "fakespypro" on a fully updated Windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appreciated.

• Cannot open an external hard drive in Windows

  In Windows 7, I was installing wubi ubuntu to an external hard drive when suddenly it disconnected from the PC. After I connected it back to PC, and double clicked the drive's icon, Windows didn't show the content of the disk but asked me whether I wanted to format it. The hard drive has only one partition. Its format is NTFS. I also connected the disk to Windows XP. It makes the Windows Explorer super slow and I cannot open the disk as well. I can open the disk on Ubuntu and Mac. Is it possible to restore the disk and make it run in Windows? Thanks

  Here is my setup: - win2003 server (ISA installed) with 3 NICs:   1) internal network   2) ISP 1 (default) network (DHCP enabled)   3) ISP 2 (backup) network (DHCP enabled) - several "normal" PC within internal net - one "special" PC within internal net Both ISP 1 and ISP 2 provide access to internet and their resources thru their VPN connections. The goal is to enable all "normal" PCs to use internet from ISP_1's VPN connection and "special" should use only ISP_2's VPN connection. Futhermore all "normal" and "special" PCs should have access to several servers accesible only thru ISP_2's VPN connection. • Is a ext3 Linux filesystem byte order independent

  I have a good old HP-C3700 Workstation with PA-RISC CPU here that I would like to use as a subversion server for a very large repository. I just worry what happens if the workstation dies (everybody who knows this computer knows that it is running like an Abrams tank and unlikely to happen in the next decade). I'm using Debian Linux on this system. If the mainboard dies can I just plug the SCSI drive into a PC and read the files from a normal Intel Linux PC? Which software RAID levels would be safe?

• ASUS EAH5770 CuCore problem: VLC Stutting!

Like in the title my problem concernig this boring stutting when i play a Tv series episodes or a film on VLC whit my mew PC. • BIOS root kit? Or, how do I fresh install a clean BIOS?

  So I was installing questionable operating system onto my EEE pc and it required me to downgrade the BIOS which I really am not an expert at. I used a patch and it appeared to work. Now, I'm paranoid about the downgrade because, honestly, I have no idea where the code came from or what could be in it. My question, then, is it possible to "start over" completely fresh with my BIOS? As in wipe out the possibly malicious BIOS and go back to the manufacturer-provided one? Has anyone done something similar to this? I just want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix to the EEE pc 1000 but I want to make sure the BIOS are secure. Any advice would help tremendously, or am I just being uber paranoid? BIOS are definitely not my strength.

• Problem whit usb wireless mouse

  Recently i have thi problem whit my wireless mouse (Trust model on: www.trust.com/15313). Sometimes when i start the Pc or during a game the pointer/arrow stop to move it. In the Pc start the pointer is blocked on the center of the screen. If I'm lucky i have to chance the USB wirless adapter from port 1 to port 2 but sometimes this trick doesn't work i to use the mouse i have to restart. Like you can see in the productor webpage this mouse don't have the direver but only a tool to solve some problem. • Memory compatibility?

  I'm in the process of building a PC intended mostly for gaming and I've got a few questions. Currently, I only have the motherboard and CPU: Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 My main question is about memory compatibility. I have 4 Hynix 2GB HMT125U7BFR8C-G7 with light-moderate use laying around and I'd love to save a few bucks if I can. I've read that this is server memory... a) Will that be a problem for PC use? b) Is it compatible with the motherboard? I've emailed Hynix and checked Crucial to no avail. If incompatible, what memory would be a good fit given the components I have? The motherboard has 4 sockets and supports up to 32GB, but I don't know that I have the budget for that at the moment. • Configuring Ubuntu 10.04's Greeter Screen

  I have an Ubuntu server (9.04 at the moment) and an Ubuntu desktop which I recently upgraded to 10.04. Once I'd set up the users and groups on the desktop to match the server (I'm new to this, I think LDAP would do this for me, but that's another question), the friendly greeter screen no longer displays the same set of users1. In 9.04 (the previous version running on the desktop PC) there were four users shown. These had UIDs of 500 to 510. Changing the UIDs is one solution, but that would mean changing the UIDs on all my linux PCs, and that is a might PITA (unless there's a tool to make it less painful). How can I get the greeter in 10.04 to show users with UIDs in the 500s without resorting to changing the UIDs? I use the greeter screen with user pictures as the PC is mainly for use by my young children and clicking the picture is a bit easier (they still need to type a password though).

• Media player only works as administrator?

  It seems I can only get Media Player 12 to work as administrator. If I run it normally (I am in the administrator group on my local PC) and right click on Music, and choose Manage Music Library. Media Player will sit and think for 5 or so seconds, then just not do anying, no dialog, no error. If I run as administator I can now get into the Manage Music Library dialog and add my a public folder containing my music. I've even tried granting everyone access to the public folder. One thing to note is that I have recently set up a domain controller and added my PC to the domain. With my local account I never noticed this problem, but I've since created a domain account and am now seeing this issue. I can't find much difference between the local and domain accounts - both are in the administrator group. Why would WMP require run as administrator? OS, Windows 7 64bit

• Why can't get more speed on iperf on windows xp

  I test my bandwith and throughput using iperf (jperf) on desktop PC with WinXP. I can't get more than 3Mbit/s outside until I change TCP Window size - about 84Kb is ok. but I can't force XP to use this value by default.. I try very many magic spells on Registry, use many TCP Optimisers - but nothing works. I will accept that that everything is ok, when I reboot the PC, run iperf and will see 18.1Mbit - like my Linux box standing very near my Windows XP Box. Is it possible?

  Hello Everybody... "error 0x80070522. not able to create a file in c:\ directory" One of our customers has just found a problem when trying to create a file on the root of the C:\ Drive, on a Windows 7 Professional PC. I know they shouln't be keeping files here, but there is a valid reason in this case, so I've relaxed the security on the root of C:\ by giving the group 'users' modify permission. Before I relaxed the security, the user was receiving 'access denied', but now they are receiving the message: An unexpected error is keeping you from creating the file. If you continue to recieve this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070522: A required priviledge is not held by the client. Googling for this suggests that it is caused by UAC, but how can I get round this when the user doesn't have admin rights on their PC? So did you find a solution for this issue ?? Please its urgent to my accountant software..

• PSU failing or Mainboard failing?

  I am having some troubles lately powering on my desktop workstation. While starting up the PC after being off for hours (usually at least 8 hours) it randomly fails to do so. What happens is that : I press the power button; nothing happens I can hear a moderate buzzing noise at the back of the PC (near the PSU); but I can't say for sure that it's not from the mainboard. If I insist pressing the power button a few times in 1-2 minutes it'll start Another route would be that instead of (3) I will plug off the power cable from the PSU and wait for 30 seconds. Then I will press the power on and keep it for 30-60 seconds (I had some success at notebooks with a similar approach). Then I will plug back the cable in the PSU, press only once the power button and it will start normally. Also while running normally I keep hearing some low buzzing which seems to be fan-RPM-related (i.e. when processing images or doing CPU intensive work). What should I look into? UPDATE It's getting worse. It took more than 10 retries today and almost 20 minutes to start the computer. I tried the paperclip trick and the PSU behaves perfectly. I managed to start the computer like so : I pressed the on-button a few times and then left the PC in a pre-startup state (the fans were working the buzzing noise was strong and I went to eat. I thought I won't lit the house on fire so fast and without smelling. Back, after 10-15 min the computer booted up! Discussed with a fellow at Intel and he told me the capacitors on the mainboard are probably a bit shot. If they are shot, he said, it should start up warm perfectly. So I did restart it, warm, a few times (5 sec cooldown and then 40 sec cooldown and it started up perfectly). I can either replace the capacitors on the mainboard (doesn't sound worth it or replace the mainboard (this one sucks too :)) ) FINAL INFO : It was the PSU after all. Although it was powering the IDEs and SATAs the Mainboard power module was failing. I bought another mainboard just to find out that this wasn't the cause. Now I'll have to return it somehow. The spare PSU is now in the computer and doing well.. Although larger (500W), it's like a plane taking off.. I need a better one.

• Backing up data in an encrypted way

  I have the following use case: There's some data from my PC I want to periodically back-up online I own some hosting, so I want to use that for the backups, don't want to pay to another backup service I want to encrypt my data locally prior to moving it to the server I have no problem writing scripts to automate the process (say, periodically generate the backup and upload by FTP to my server), but my main question is about step 3 - the encryption: which way is recommended to encrypt my files (say, collected into a .ZIP) prior to uploading to the server? P.S. TrueCrypt seems popular but it's not quite what I'm looking for, since I don't want the files to be constantly encrypted here on my PC.

• Formatting a disk for Macintosh using Linux

  I've been asked to move data from an old external hard drive to a new one, and to make the new one compatible with the Macintosh. (The old drive's USB connection has died, and I'm connecting to old the drive using a PC card that provieds an eSATA to the drive. The recipient's Macintosh doesn't have a PC card slot, so she can't access the old drive anymore. Hence, the new drive.) Naturally, I'm doing this data transfer using Linux. I've discovered that I can format the drive as HFS+ using mkfs.hfsplus from the hfsprogs package. But I need to know: do I need to do anything special with the partition table? Is there a special Macintosh partition table format that I need to format this disk to? If so, what tools can I use to get the right format for the partition table?

• Display Resolution Getting Changed Automatically (sometimes) - Win7x64 - ASUS M3A78-EM

  Hi Guys, AMD PC Motherboard - ASUS M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from ASUS website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

• Configure Wireless Network Card

  I recently upgraded the wireless network card in my Ubuntu PC from an 802.11g to an 802.11n. Now, it can't see my router. It doesn't appear in the list of networks that is displayed when you click on the NetworkManager icon in Gnome. Other networks are listed and I have connected to them (no password required!). I'm using the Windows driver through ndiswrapper and it can see the card. I tested the card in a Windows PC and everything worked. The router's log doesn't show any messages coming from the wireless card. What have I done wrong? If you need any more information, just leave a comment and I'll get add it to the question.

• Computer wakes itself few seconds after hibernation

  Hi all, this is the situation, this is a Dell Optiplex 755, I recently upgraded it to Windows 7 64 bits, it had Windows XP SP3 previously, on XP I never had a problem hibernating the PC, now with Windows 7 64 every time I hibernate the PC it wakes it self after 5 or so seconds. Here are the steps I already tried: On Windows 7 I enabled the hibernation following this steps In the MoBo the sleep settings are on S3 In the Mobo I disable remote wake ups I have disabled the remote wake up in the NIC When I run the lastwake command I get unknown device or something like that I already disable the wake timers on Windows I have the latest drivers from Intel, but I just found out that in the device Manager I get a warning sign on the "Intel AMT SOL (COM3)" device saying that it failed and windows stopped the device, I reinstalled the Intel drivers but nothing changed. The only thing that I haven't touch is Intel ME in the MoBo but I don't if that could help and what settings are correct. Thanks for you help.

• Window 7 problem, Explorer.exe, DWM.exe

  I'm using Window 7 Ultimate. I get a problem with two processes, namely explorer.exe and sometimes dwm.exe. The two processes tend to use cpu between 20-30%. And it only occurs when i play some game on my PC. My PC works perfect until I play some game. And another important observation: They consume no cpu as such but only consumes when I try to refresh my desktop. I mean when I right-click on desktop. It takes seconds for refresh. I have no virus problems. I had already tried following things: Kill explorer.exe and relaunch from task manager. (Problem still persists) Kill dwm.exe, well it relaunches again. (Problem still persists) Log Off and Log On. (Problem still persists) Restart. Problem Solved. (But need an alternative). Can anyone kindly suggest some quick fixes to the problem?

  Is there a constraint-based scheduling/calendar application? This application would be used to coordinate multiple people's schedules. Two basic use cases: Multiple people need to schedule a time to meet together. Everyone is busy at different days/times. Each person enters blocks of days/times they cannot meet, and the application suggests the best times to meet given a desired time range. Multiple people need to use some common resources for a specific length of time (over some time span like a week), but the exact date/time does not matter. These people enter the resources and time needed, and the application suggests the best way to share these resources. This use case still accounts for people's blocks of busy time. I imagine this program would be graphical, but other interfaces would be acceptable. Also preferable if web-based/works on both PC's and Mac's, but PC-only/Mac-only solutions are acceptable.

• Is it possible to modify a color scheme and windows decorations in Xfce4?

  just testing PCLinuxOS Phoenix XFCE Edition 2011-07 which I would like to install on my grandpa's PC instead older PCLOS 2009 with KDE3 (which is almost impossible to upgrade). The PC is relatively older one (Sempron 2200+ CPU, MSI K7N2GM2 board with integrated GeForce 440MX series graphics, 1GB RAM and 80GB IDE HDD) and I thought that it is too weak for KDE4. I already used Xfce in the past (Sam Linux 2006 and 2007), but in new Xfce4 I am not able to somehow change the windows color scheme and the windows decorations - the settings manager offers me switching between preinstalled themes but it is possible to modify them with some GUI?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated?   I tried searching the Internet, but could not find a decent tutorial explaining how to create a bootable Ubuntu Linux (10.04) USB installation that could be run not only on a PC but also on Macs and MacBook Pros. In addition, I tried refit, but ended with "Missing operating system" error. Here is basically the layout of my bootable under PC Ubuntu USB drive (using MBR): Partition 1 (ext3, bootable) - Ubuntu Linux 32 bit, contains also grub2 bootloader. Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it? Thanks!
