• windows server 2008 r2 remote desktop issue with roaming clients

  I have the following situation : a Dell windows server 2008 R2 computer, with remote desktop services installed. I have installed a java application making use of a PostgreSql database, and made this application available for clients using RDP. Clients are standard Win XP pc's and Psion Neo handheld devices running Windows CE 5 Pro. The application works fine for clients on standard XP pc's connected directly via cat 5E Ethernet cable to a Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. The Psion Neo clients connect wireless to the network via Motorola AP6532 access points. These access points are connected via a POE adapter to the same switch as the XP pc's. The Psion devices can connect without any problem and very quickly to the server and to the application using RDP. So far, so good. When the Psion devices move around in the warehouse, and they roam from one access point to the other, the RDP session on the client freezes for approx 1 minute, and then it automatically resumes the session. This freezing is very annoying for the users. Can anyone help in solving this issue? Update (August 9) : After re-installing the access points we have a working situation, but only when connecting to the RDP host : * via a Win Xp SP3 laptop * via a Symbol MC9190 Win CE 6 mobile device When roaming we notice a small hick-up less then 1 second, what is very acceptable. With the Psion NEO it's still not working, when roaming the screen freezes from 2 to 30 seconds. The RDP client on the win xp sp3 laptop and the symbol mc9190 is version 6.0. The RDP client on the neo is version 5.2. I have changed the security layer on the RDP host to RDP security layer (based on forums on the internet), because older RDP clients seem to have issues with the RDP 7.1 protocol on the Win server 2088 R2. Psion adviced us to do some network logging activity on the different devices. We made this logging via wireshark, and based on this the conclusion of Psion is that the server fails in handling tcp-requests. Can anyone give me a second opinion by analysing the wireshark loggings. Thanks in advance. Regards Patrick

  I tried searching the Internet, but could not find a decent tutorial explaining how to create a bootable Ubuntu Linux (10.04) USB installation that could be run not only on a PC but also on Macs and MacBook Pros. In addition, I tried refit, but ended with "Missing operating system" error. Here is basically the layout of my bootable under PC Ubuntu USB drive (using MBR): Partition 1 (ext3, bootable) - Ubuntu Linux 32 bit, contains also grub2 bootloader. Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it? Thanks!

  I'm working on a corporate desktop (still) running Windows XP SP2. I recently received a new PC and am reinstalling all my tools. Something is different about this one in that it won't let me install Powershell 2.0. When I do, I get a popup: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. This also occurs for other installs, like Service Pack 3 and Windows Installer 4.5. I'm aware this PC is under group policy restrictions, but I haven't narrowed down what restriction is preventing this install so that I can have the appropriate support team resolve it. What setting could be responsible for this?

• Old notebook internal display randomly not recognized

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

• Is my Cisco switch port bad?

  I've been chasing a packet-loss and network stability issue for a handful of end-users on an internal network for the past few days... These issues surfaced last week, however the location was struck by lightning six weeks ago. I was seeing 5-10% packet loss between a stack of four Cisco 2960's and several PC's and phones on the other side of a 77-meter run. The PC's were run inline with the phones over a trunked link (switchport configuration pastebin). We were seeing dropped calls and interruptions in client-server applications and Microsoft Exchange connectivity. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps remotely, having a local technician do the following during breaks in user and production activity: change cables between the wall jack and device. change patch cables between the patch panel and switch port(s). try different switch ports within the 2960 stack. change end-user devices with known-good equipment (new phones, different PC's). clear switch port interface counters and monitor incrementing errors closely. (Pastebin output of sh int) Pored over the device logs and Observium RRD graphs. No link up/down issues from the switch side. change power strips on the end-user side. test cable runs from the Cisco 2960 using test cable-diagnostics tdr int Gi4/0/9 (clean)* test cable runs with a Tripp-Lite cable tester. (clean) run diagnostics on the switch stack members. (clean) In the end, it took three changes of switch ports to find a stable solution. The only logical conclusion is that a few Cisco 2960 switch ports are bad or flaky... Not dead, but not consistent in behavior either. I'm not used to seeing individual ports die in this manner. What else can I test or check to determine if these devices are bad? Is it common for single ports to have problems, rather than a contiguous bank of ports?   Hi, as suggested by the title, I want to change CPU: actually I have two computers, one with Ubuntu running on an AMD Athlon 64 dual core 5200+ and the other with FreeBSD running on an AMD Sempron single core LE-1250. I would like to swap (I am not sure that this is the correct term...) the CPUs from one computer to the other one, that is take the dual core from the ubuntu pc and put it inside the freebsd pc and viceversa. The mobo is the same. Do you think I will encounter problems?

• How to achieve reliable Gigabit Ethernet Link with my Acer Aspire Revo R3610?

  I want to stream HD movies over my wired Gigabit LAN from my PC to my Acer Aspire Revo R3610. It's connected with a 3ft Cat5e patch cable to my Netgear GS605v2 Switch. The PC acting as File Server is connected at 1Gbps to the Switch. Network driver options are set to defaults, including automatic speed/duplex negotiation on both machines. The Revo will not connect to my Network Switch at 1Gbps - the OS reports that it reverts to 100Mbps either shortly after connection or immediately upon connection. Through a process of elimination (trying different drivers, patch cables, ports on the switch, and other 1Gbps-capable devices connected to the Network switch which successfully achieve 1Gbps links and performance) I have drawn the conclusion there is either a Hardware or Software (Driver) issue with the Revo itself. I have performed tests using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. Can anyone offer insight on Gigabit Ethernet with the Revo?

Both disks say "Resynching", but there is no progress indicator. In addition, there is a small yellow exclamation mark on both disks. My questions are: How long could the synch take for 500 GB drive with about 150 GB of data? PC has 4 GBs of RAM and AMD dual core 4000+ Is there a way to monitor status of the synching?   I have recently purchased a new office desktop PC from Dell with OEM version of Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro. One of the reasons I always use Dell is that they always supply installation media CDs or DVDs, unlike some other companies that just give you ISO images on the hard disk that you have to burn yourself. This is the first PC I have purchased with Office 2010 Pro (OEM), and I was disappointed to see that Dell don't ship out any installation media for office 2010, they just supply a piece of card with the office pro product key printed on it. If the HDD fails completely and I have to perform a clean installation, how can I re-install office? Can I download the trial version of Office 2010 and install that, then offer it my product key? Bearing in mind that the product key is an OEM product, not a retail product, would this work?

  I'm waiting for deliver of a Linksys EA3500 router. I was wondering if it was possible to get the WAN port act as normal WAN port (Internet IP) + LAN switch ? My problem is that my Internet box is in a room with NAS and PC, and the router will be in another room with TV, PS3 and PC. The Internet box have a 4 port Gigabit switch so one cable will plug from there to the router's WAN in the other room. The router will get the Internet IP from the Internet box, but will it be possible to have private network through this link too ? I could have a first network between the Internet box and the router, and another network form router and devices but that will do double NAT for nothing... Thanks for reading me and your help !

  well i hope this stackexchange site is the right for my issue. I've an Oracle VirtualBox running on some acer pc Settings for the Acer PC: Windows 7 SP1 64bit Intel G630 @ 2.7Ghz 2GB RAM i used a .vhd image which contains a windows 2000 system with some preconfigured stuff and software for a customer. At the Windows boot time immediately after the "Loading Windows 2000..." - Screen i get the following Error: Sorry for the German Text but it say's something like "Check the Size of your HDD. If the error contains a driver, deactivate it and try again. Or change the graficcard" The HDD Size shouldn't be a problem in my honest opinion. Can anyone give me an adivce what i can try to do? I just tested the same combination of the .vhd image and oracle virtualbox on another computer. Same issue. Greetings

  Hey, this morning after I went to college a virus infected my pc without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagonosed with was "fakespypro" http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fFakeSpypro on a fully updated windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appriciated.

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network.   The network: * A windows 7 PC with 2 NICs - one connected to an old style ethernet hub - the other to the internet - with internet sharing enabled * An Apple iMac connected to the hub, successfully utilizing the ICS to access the internet. My problem: Using the Mac, copying from the internet is fast. However, if I connect to a SMB: share on the Windows 7 PC and try and copy anything a few kb the copy operation is appallingly slow with my network card using the Windows 7 control panel showing ~.1% utilization. The NICs are 100Mbs and show a 10x larger throughput (now ~1%) if I download large files over the internet using the Mac. WTF?

  A while back, I converted some AVI files to .m4v files that would be playable on my iPhone. When I play these files on my PC using iTunes the quality is terrible because the resolution is so low. My solution is to convert the AVI's using Handbrake using the "Universal" preset; it works like a charm and I can now watch them both on my PC and iPhone. The Problem I want to import the newly converted files into my iTunes library and be able to copy the metadata (show, season (these are TV episodes) Description, etc) without having to manually copy and paste values from one file to another. Is it possible to just say "copy this file's metadata to this file"?

• Windows 7, weird/annoying explorer problem

  First of all, I'm asking the moderators if you could summarize my problem in the Title and modify it according to that. Thanks in advance and sorry, my english is not that good. The problem. It happened on two of my machines already. Once it happens there are many problems with explorer. I'll try to describe at precisely I just can. So. Basically when you create a new folder, you have to hit the enter key TWICE because first it'll throw an error that "there is no such file..". Okay. Then if you try to delete some, this happens also. Renaming is the same. Here is an example. I tried adding a "2" to the end of the folder name, hit enter and got this. Here I can press cancel, nothing happens. If I press retry, the popup disappears and it'll finally change the folder name. I can't come up with anything for this. Using BitDefender (registered, full protection), Windows 7 x86 Ultimate retail (boxed, english version). The other PC had the same anti-virus protection , but it have a Windows 7 x64. Both systems are activated, updated totally. I don't remember installing any new stuff on the PCs. All the stuff on the PCs are legal, no cracked / any other software present. It just happened, so to say. Already reinstalled the other PC because I thought * I * messed up something and its just something FUBAR. However, I dont want to reinstall my laptop also. Any ideas are welcome. (Today I had a strange bug. Windows Explorer had 1.0+gb memory usage with 100% cpu. Killed it, launched a new explorer.exe and thats all. Nothing changed, but it may worth a try. The other PC did NOT have this problem, ever.) Isn't there a registry fix for this or something? :/

  My local library has a number of Windows Vista SP1 PCs connected to two HP Officejet 6000 E609n wireless printers. Each PC can print to either of the two printers and one of the two printers is the default on each PC. This configuration has worked well over the last year w/o any trouble. Recently, the library staff is reporting that sometimes when patrons try to print, they can't. Closer inspection shows that the the default wireless printer is offline. In order to get the printer online again, the printer has to be restarted. In Control Panel Printers applet, under the Printer menu, the "Use Printer Offline" option is grayed out and there's no way to bring the printer back online w/o restarting it. Does anyone know what's going on here?

• My computer is listed twice in the Network view; network shares are not accessible

  I have a couple of network shares set up on my Win7 machine. They've been in constant use, from that same machine on which they're set up. One morning they just randomly stopped working: When I went looking for what was wrong, I noticed that I also had my PC listed twice in the Network view in Explorer: "Sirius" is the name of the PC on which these screenshots were taken. I may have installed some windows updates around the time this happened. I have since tried rebooting and installing all the latest updates, to no avail. I've also removed the share in question and re-added it, making sure I give all rights to everyone. I'm an administrator on this machine, but I can't access the administrative shares (\\SIRIUS\c$) either, with the same message. I can access \\localhost\AcronisImages and \\localhost\c$, and I can ping sirius. Any ideas?
