  I've heard many times that all programming is really a subset of math. Some suggest that OO, at its roots, is mathematically based. I don't get the connection. Aside from some obvious examples: using induction to prove a recursive algorithm formal correctness proofs functional languages lambda calculus asymptotic complexity DFAs, NFAs, Turing Machines, and theoretical computation in general the fact that everything on the box is binary In what ways is programming really a subset of math? I'm looking for an explanation that might have relevance to enterprise/OO development (if there is a strong enough connection, that is). Thanks in advance. Edit: as I stated in a comment to an answer, math is uber important to programming, but what I struggle with is the "subset" argument.

  I am seeing a lot of examples on how to style Selected rows in DataGrid such as this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1223280/how-can-i-set-the-color-of-a-selected-row-in-datagrid Can i just disabled selected row styling? i don't want to have to override every single thing that selected row changes. Just don't want any visible changes. • How to flatten already filled out PDF form using iTextSharp

  I'm using iTextSharp to merge a number of pdf files together into a single file. I'm using method described in iTextSharp official tutorials, specifically here, which merges files page by page via PdfWriter and PdfImportedPage. Turns out some of the files I need to merge are filled out PDF Forms and using this method of merging form data is lost. I've see several examples of using PdfStamper to fill out forms and flatten them. What I can't find, is a way to flatten already filled out PDF Form and hopefully merge it with the other files without saving it flattened out version first. Thanks

  How do I create a silverlight data template in code? I've seen plenty of examples for WPF, but nothing for Silverlight.   Hi, Would appreciate if someone could pls show me a simple example of how to setup and use qTip jquery plugin for a tooltip to display at the bottom-left of where I hover over an image. I've tried following the demos/examples from the site: qTip but just can't seem to get it working. I am unsure if I need to include the HTML Structure in the documentation and if so, where do I place it? Does this plugin also require a CSS file of some sort? Anywyays would really appreciate if someone could explain/setup an example of using qtip. Would also apreciate if I'm not redirected back to the qTip demo page. Thanks.

  When talking about a stack in either computing or "real" life we usually assume a "first on, last off" type of functionality. Because the idea of a stack is based around something in the physical world, does it matter how the data in the stack is stored? I notice in a lot of examples that the storage of the stack data is quite often done using an array and the newest item added to the stack is placed at the bottom of the array. (like adding a new plate to an existing stack of plates except putting it underneath the other plates rather than on top). As a paradigm, does it matter in what order the data is stored within the stack as long as the operation of the stack acts as expected?

  I've seen many examples in LINQ but i'm not able to reproduce the same result in vb.net. I have following code: Dim context As New MyModel.Entities() Dim rnd As New System.Random() Dim gardens As List(Of Tuin) = (From t In context.Gardens Where _ t.Approved = True And _ Not t.Famous = True _ Order By rnd.Next() _ Select t).ToList() But i receive an error when binding this list to a control. LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'Int32 Next()' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. Any suggestion on how to get this to work?

• How to avoid "Page Expired" messages on logout with Wicket after redirect

  Hi there. I'm taking my first steps in to the world of Wicket. I've set up a login form and a logout page. The logout page looks like this: public class LogoutPage extends WebPage { public LogoutPage(final PageParameters pageParams) { getSession().invalidate(); setResponsePage(getApplication().getHomePage()); } } When a user clicks the Logout link they're redirected to the homepage, so far so good. The problem is that when a user tries to click on any of the navigatable Link's they get a "Page Expired" message. I'd like to log the user out gracefully and allow the user to continue to browse the website without receiving the "Page Expired" message. Any help is greatly appreciated. By the way, I've tried to follow the Wicket examples but they seem to be using org.apache.wicket.authentication and I haven't figured out how to make this available to my project (I'm using eclipse and maven2).

• What is the equivalent of OnRender in Silverlight?

  I'm working on porting an app from WPF to Silverlight. The app uses custom types derived from FrameworkElement (in WPF) to describe shapes, and text to be rendered on a Canvas. The WPF app root node overrides OnRender() to iterate through a collection of 'child' nodes, calling Render on each child node to build the Visual Tree. Silverlight doesn't expose OnRender, but there are hints that the same effect can be achieved using ControlTemplate. Is this the way to go, and are there any good examples of using this method available? I've done some googling (binging?) and found nothing really conclusive.

• Gridpanel auto resize on window resize

  I'm using the array-grid extjs example to try and fit a gridpanel into a container window. The problem is on resizing the container window, the gridpanel doesn't automatically fit the new size. As I understand it that's how it's supposed to work.   Hello all, I am architecting a software project and I want to create a SAAS (Software As a service) one. I want to model my application along the lines of Salesforce. I really like there customization features but I am not sure how they really go about it. I read that they create an ID for every field that is required and then store the corresponding data too. Can anyone guide me as to how this is possible. For example, if I want to store an employee record. 2 fields (firstname, lastname) are already given and the user adds a third field(say DOB), how is data going to be stored? I would also appreciate if someone could give me some resources to practical examples of implementing a SAAS architecture. Thanks

  OK, so I've been working on this for hours. I've found a couple of posts here, but nothing that actually resolves the problem. So, let me try it again... I have an MVC2 app using Ninject and a custom membership provider. If I try and inject the provider using the ctor, I get an error: 'No parameterless constructor defined for this object.' public class MyMembershipProvider : MembershipProvider { IMyRepository _repository; public MyMembershipProvider(IMyRepository repository) { _repository = repository; } I've also been playing around with factories and Initialize(), but everything is coming up blanks. Any thoughts/examples?

• WCF Data Services consuming data from EF based repository

  We have an existing repository which is based on EF4 / POCO and is working well. We want to add a service layer using WCF Data Services and looking for some best practice advice. So far we have developed a class which has a IQueryable property and the getter triggers the repository 'get all users' method. The problem so far have been two-fold: 1) It required us to decorate the ID field of the poco object to tell data service what field was the id. This now means that our POCO object is not 'pure'. 2) It cannot figure out the relationships between the objects (which is obvious i guess). I've now stopped this approach and i'm thinking that maybe we should expose the OBjectContext from the repository and use more 'automatic' functionality of EF. Has anybody got any advice or examples of using the repository pattern with WCF Data Services ?

• How to do Selection Alignment using the RichTextBox in Silverlight 4?

  I cannot seem to figure out how to do a Selection Alignment in the new RichTextBox, I have an idea that I need to convert the selection into the Paragraph type which supports alignment, but cannot seem to figure this out. None of the Silverlight examples have this, but I'm sure it is possible. I have this code, that does not work - as I think I need the selection to be a Paragraph as it always returns and Exception "Value does not fall within the expected range". • OpenGL Colorspace Conversion

  Does anyone know how to create a texture with a YUV colorspace so that we can get hardware based YUV to RGB colorspace conversion without having to use a fragment shader? I'm using an NVidia 9400 and I don't see an obvious GL extension that seems to do the trick. I've found examples how to use a fragment shader, but the project I'm working on currently only supports OpenGL 1.1 and I don't have time to convert it to 2.0 and perform all the regression testing necessary. This is also targeting Linux. On other platforms I've been using a MESA extension but it doesn't function on the Nvidia card.

  Hello, Recently I'm working on a refactor project from asp to asp.net 3.5. There are lots of .html file uses .inc file for the header and footer in the old site, and needed to be converted to .aspx uses master page. My problem is, for search engine and for bookmark those old pages are all gone Therefore I need to redirect the old .html pages to .aspx. I've been trying to find a way to fix that, finally i found ISAPI_Rewrite might be the tool that i can use. After a few hours reading the document on the site, i still have no clue how to write the syntax at all :( Could anyone give a some examples please? ex. rewrite all urls under www.example.com/en to www.example.com/ rewrite all .html to .aspx The server is using Windows 2000, IIS6, ISAPI_Rewrite 3 Lite Thanks in advance ben :)

Almost all examples I've seen on internet use SendMessagefunction. Why is that? Isn't WndProc function designed to replace SendMessage? P.S. I don't know right to convert string to IntPtr and found that Marshal.StringToHGlobalUni works ok. Is it right function to do this?

(it is always null). so: http://localhost/myservice.svc/SplitString/testtext does not work. What is the correct url format (or UriTemplate) one should use? The only examples I found of odata and WebGet only have an example method which doesn't have any parameters.

• ASP.NET MVC2 and AJAX

  I am currently developing a new website utilizing ASP.NET MVC2. Much of what I want to do with the website (from a front-end standpoint) involves AJAX-y-type tasks. Two examples: I want to display forms, and switch between them via a drop-down menu (or through links) without having to go back and hit the server every single time. I want the user to be able to select points on a Chart Control and have portions of the page refresh with the appropriate data depending on what he/she selects (partial page refresh). In both these cases, I am able to accomplish what I wish to accomplish using the traditional web forms event handlers, etc. Unfortunately, the use of a ScriptManager violates the spirit of MVC. It seems as if MVC prevents the use of many of the controls that are available to ASP.NET. So, my question is: how do I use AJAX and make AJAX calls without utilizing ScriptManager and the web forms method of utilizing event handlers?

• flex 4: swfloader - how to mute game completly

  Hiya. Ive read some answers here regarding muting swfloader volume but none of the examples would work in flex 4. I tried doinf the following: this._swfGame.source=url; this._swfGame.soundTransform = new SoundTransform(0.0); this would shut down the volume of the preloader, but when the game starts the volume is back to normal. i tried adding the following to the previous code: this._swfGame.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,this._configSwf); private function _configSwf(event:Event):void { this._swfGame.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, _configSwf); var soundTransform:SoundTransform = new SoundTransform(0.0); // TODO: set proper volume this._swfGame.soundTransform = soundTransform; } but i got the same results. any ideas? thanks!

• Minimax algorithm: Cost/evaluation function?

  Hi guys, A school project has me writing a Date game in C++ (example at http://www.cut-the-knot.org/Curriculum/Games/Date.shtml) where the computer player must implement a Minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning. Thus far, I understand what the goal is behind the algorithm in terms of maximizing potential gains while assuming the opponent will minify them. However, none of the resources I read helped me understand how to design the evaluation function the minimax bases all it's decisions on. All the examples have had arbitrary numbers assigned to the leaf nodes, however, I need to actually assign meaningful values to those nodes. Intuition tells me it'd be something like +1 for a win leaf node, and -1 for a loss, but how do intermediate nodes evaluate? Any help would be most appreciated.

If the user is on the internal network they will use Windows authentication and if they are connecting externally they will use Forms authentication. I’ve seen quite a few people asking the question how do I configure an ASP.NET MVC web application for this, but I haven’t found a complete explanation.
