• hypertext for research notes [closed]

  I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

Y can construct Lessthan, LessOrEqualThan etc equivalents as Expression has this operators predefined. ¿How can I transform this code to do the same with strings? Expression don't give me a predefined operator like "contains" or "startwith" and I'm really noob with Expression trees. Thanks, and please Post your answer in C#/VB.   I've got a field in my model of type FileField. This gives me an object of type type File, which has the following method: File.name: The name of the file including the relative path from MEDIA_ROOT. What I want is something like .filename that will only give me the filename and not the path as well something like: {% for download in downloads %} <div class="download"> <div class="title">{{download.file.filename}}</div> </div> {% endfor %} which would give something like myfile.jpg thanks

• how do you release code like a static library in windows

  I had a question with regards doing an official release of code. Its my first time using VS2008 so bear with me. I have my header file that has the api's which grant them access to the lib. now there is a debug and a release version that is talked about. how do i give these to my client? do i need to give them both folders or just the lib file along with the header file for that lib. The lib is ready for use directly. but i am a little confused between debug vs release. thanks

  I've made a UIScrollView the first responder. I need to maintain touch events to a touchesEnded:withEvent: method on a view behind it. I've tried using the nextResponder method and that failed. I've tried forwarding touchesEnded:withEvent to the view behind it and that fails. How do I get this to work? The UIScrollView wont work unless it is the first responder or gets events some other way. Thank you for any help. Shame Apple's documentation and APIs are terrible in areas.

• Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

• Where does Rails get it's datetime for creating records?

  I have a rails app with a data model called 'jobs' and i'm faced with a critical design choice crossroads. I don't know enough about Rails and it's inner workings to be able to say for sure what I should do despite a complete read of the rails and ruby docs. I want to be able to accurately display the age of a job record in days. So when a customer logs in, they can see that the job they submitted is 'x' days old. Where does a rails app on Heroku get it's time stamps? From Heroku? or the customers system clock? If a customer has a out of date system clock and submits a job, it could really mess up the sorting of their job list, not to mention me the overseer of job records. Any advice out there? EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm not asking how to list jobs by their date, but to which clock does a rails app on Heroku base it's records.

• Should default passwords always be empty?

  I'm currently designing a system that requires an admin to log in using a password. For certain reasons, it is difficult to set this password during installation, but it can be changed later. My idea is this: If I leave the default password empty, it is so horridly insecure that every admin is going to fix this as soon as possible. If I were to use some kind of predefined password instead, admins may think "ah.. nobody would think I've got 'defaultpassword' as my password so it's not very important to change." So the basic thought is to make it so terrible that even the most lazy people are going to do something about it.

  I have commercial experience in one programming language but I want to make a switch to another programming language (C#/.NET). I am in full-time employment so whenever I get free time I read relevant books or use online resources available. My questions are - How do I develop experience in the new language of interest (without leaving current job)? The best way I find to learn is to develop a project - How do you / Where can you find new test projects which you can refer to in the interview (these don't have to be real projects but perhaps I can take the code with me in a usb stick as proof). Do you have any tips/advice for me regarding best way to switch career? My lanugauge of choice is C# - so c# related answers will be appreciated.

  Background I'm using a texture as a damage map represented by an array of floats for displaying damage effects on a space ship in a process. An upside of this is being able to 'slice' ships in half, using an input damage map with a line down the middle, as shown in the diagram below. Question However, I'm encountering problems separating this split ship into two different entities. I would like to be able to split the image down the 'damage line', in a process similar to this: I don't have much idea where to start detecting the red line above. Any advice would be welcome.

I still don't understand a few things, that AFAIK are not mentioned in the contract but I might have missed or misunderstood something, so I'm going to ask. Disclaimer: I know you're not a lawyer, etc. etc. Let's say I give in the market a demo version, and I sell in the market the full version too. May I also sell the full version outside the market? I understand that you can't give away the demo in the market and then collect the payment outside, but what if I do allow the user to buy it in the market, but also allow him to buy outside the market? What if I charge a lower price if he buys outside the market?

• 100% APC Fragmentation - Cacherouter & Pressflow install

  My APC cache has a 100% fragmentation. I'm not quite sure I understand what is going on here. For testing I jacked the available memory up to 512. After a day the total available free memory shows 73% but I still have 100% fragmentation. Would you gurus please look at my settings and offer your advice? Oh, I have read people suggest that I disable apc.stat when possible but when I do the site crashes. I am using the Pressflow build of Drupal 6 with the cacherouter module installed.   On Android Market i.e. GooglePlay, there used to be a page with the latest new games. So every game had a chance to get noticed and make its way up especially if it was good. But now I see "top new free" page and no more the latest apps. I don't understand how can be "top new" Anybody knows how this works? If there are no more pages with the very latest uploaded games then the new apps will be barely seen to exist even if they are excellent, and new programmers have very little chance of getting noticed. Any good advice how to promote a new Android app these days?

  I love PHP and C# languages and i want to be excellent in both. I like to develop PHP applications using MySQL, Nginx, Memcached and so on technologies. I also like ASP.NET MVC stack and think it's great tools. But each technology requires a lot of time to master it. The same is true for C# web stack - there is a huge amount of things to be mastered like Azure, LINQ, Entity Framework ets. Mastering PHP means knowing how it works under the hood. Mastering C# means knowing CLR implementations on a deep level, knowing MSIL etc/ Where to get time for all this? Maybe this is "jack of all trades"? What can you advice?

  I have a client who has over 200 Question/Answer style content blocks. Neither the questions or answers are very long and most of them have almost the same question but with a word or two differentiating themselves from the rest of the questions. Would SEO be helped or hurt if I would to put each QA on its own page with the title of the page the question being asked etc... Or, would that be considered "farming"? • Could/Should I use static classes in asp.net/c# for shared data?

  Here's the situation I have: I'm building an online system to be used by school groups. Only one school can log into the system at any one time, and from that school you'll get about 13 users. They then proceed into a educational application in which they have to co-operate to complete tasks, and from a code point of view, sharing variables all over the place. I was thinking, if I set up a static class with static properties that hold the variables that are required to be shared, this could save me having to store/access the variables in/from a database, as long as the static variables are all properly initialized when the application starts and cleaned up at the end. Of course I would also have to put locks on the get and set methods to make the variables thread safe. Something in the back of my mind is telling me this might be a terrible way of going about things, but I'm not sure exactly why, so if people could give me their thoughts for or against using a static class in this situation, I would be quite appreciative.

• I think there is a problem with my url encoding

  I took someone's advice and started encoding my image sources, but Google doesn't seem to be able to decode them. I probably did something wrong, because basically Google is taking the full path as the image's name. See this page as an example. If you go on the top most thumbnail and do "Save as", you will see the path is not being decoded. Should I stop decoding or am I doing it wrong? Should I encode only the image name itself? Thanks!

• Is there an Objective-C algorithm like `transform` of the C++ STL?

  My goal is to have an array that contains all filenames of a specific extension, but without the extension. There's an elegant solution to get all filenames of a specific extension using a predicate filter and instructions on how to split a path into filename and extension, but to combine them I would have to write a loop (not terrible, but not elegant either). Is there a way with Objective-C (may be similar to the predicate mechanism) to apply some function to every element of an array and put the results in a second array, like the transform algorithm of the C++ STL does?

  I have recently upgraded to Precise and had some errors. It seems to be quite random and with differences in the error reports. I have duly sent the reports hoping the system will have found the problem and sorted itself out. After the second error I am following the wizards (software...) advice and seeking help. I did not really want to upgrade at this stage, but was forced to due to the latest version of python-numpy in precise. You win some, you loose some....
