• Loadbalancing Questions

  I have been learning networking for about 4 months. Wrote a single standalone Multiplayer server and succeeded with authoritative approach. Now I want to extend it by splitting the single server into clusters to allow even more players to log in to avoid latency issues. Now I have protyped the Loadbalancing server and its running pretty good so far. This is my architecture, I have a master server which acts as a proxy, every sub servers(chat, login, game) connect to the master server as well as all the clients. when a client connects, Client Request: Send Request - MS(Master) - Decides which SS(SubServer) to forward to - Forwards Request to SS - SS - Analyze Message - Send Response to MS - Decides which Client to forward to - Forwards Response to Client Well, it looks like its going through lots of stages. it takes double the time to process the message than a single server approach. i feel like my model isnt the best or i may be wrong. is there any better model or the one they use in professional games? I still want a Master-SubServer approach. I just want to clarify that I'm going in the right direction before writing all my codes. Thanks for any answer :)

  I want to create a Public folder that has full RW access. The problem with my configuration is that Windows users have no issues as guests (they can RW and Delete), my Ubuntu client can't do the same. We can only write and read, but not create or delete. I just noticed that if I copy a file to the share after mounting, my Ubuntu client immediately make "nobody" be the owner, and the group "no group" has read and write, with everyone else as read-only. What am I doing wrong?

• Reasons for Pair Programming

  I've worked in a few shops where management has passed the idea of pair programming either to me or another manager/developer, and I can't get behind it at all. From a developer stand-point I can't find a reason why moving to this coding style would be beneficial, nor as a manager of a small team have I seen any benefit. I understand that it helps on basic syntax errors and can be helpful if you need to hash something out, but managers that are out of the programming loop seem to keep seeing it as a way of keeping their designers from going to Facebook or Reddit than as a design tool. As someone close to the development floor that apparently can't quite understand from a book tossed my way or a wiki page on the subject... from a high level management position, what are the benefits of Pair Programming when dealing with Scrum or Agile environments?

  Recently I have been having a lot of fun building a competition Slice of Kevin intended in part to teach people about Web Slices in New Zealand. The competition has been very successful and has created a loyal group of users. Since launch 2 months ago we have had 26,843 users of the slice. Each of those users have spent on average 4.1 hrs each engaged inside the web slice over that time.   I have a client and their traffic from social media reads thus: 80% from facebook 1% from Twitter This suggestsd they are not exploiting twitter at all and this was in my presentation but my boss took it out claiming twitter stats are under reported in google analytics. I can't substantiate this claim and wonder where she got this idea from. Can anyone shed light on this? Are my stats wrong and should I disregard these figures? but 80-1 seems like one hell of an under report! thanks c

  I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

  I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file. I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time.   Given a public site with no logins: I let people post links to public Facebook profiles, and my site fetches the profile picture and displays it. Would it be ok if I just told people to post profiles of which they had the owner’s permission? Does such a statement exonerate me from copyright infringements and place the burden on the user? Edit: For bonus points. Can the statement just be a notice under the button (that will save the link) that says that "By clicking this button you agree to the terms and conditions" with maybe a link to the terms and conditions.

  My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming.
