  • Type for use in template object to compare double values

    - by DaClown
    I got this n-dimensional point object: template <class T, unsigned int dimension> class Obj { protected: T coords[dimension]; static const unsigned int size = dimension; public: Obj() { }; Obj(T def) { for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i]=def; }; Obj(const Obj& o) { for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i] = o.coords[i]; } const Obj& operator= (const Obj& rhs) { if (this != &rhs) for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i] = rhs.coords[i]; return *this; } virtual ~Obj() { }; T get (unsigned int id) { if (id >= size) throw std::out_of_range("out of range"); return coords[id]; } void set (unsigned int id, T t) { if (id >= size) throw std::out_of_range("out of range"); coords[id] = t; } }; and a 3D point class which uses Obj as base class: template <class U> class Point3DBase : public Obj<U,3> { typedef U type; public: U &x, &y, &z; public: Point3DBase() : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { }; Point3DBase(U def) : Obj<U,3>(def), x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { }; Point3DBase(U x_, U y_, U z_) : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { x = x_; y = y_; z= z_; }; Point3DBase(const Point3DBase& other) : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { x = other.x; y = other.y; z = other.z; } // several operators ... }; The operators, basically the ones for comparison, use the simple compare-the-member-object approach like: virtual friend bool operator== (const Point3DBase<U> &lhs, const Point3DBase<U> rhs) { return (lhs.x == rhs.x && lhs.y == rhs.y && lhs.z == rhs.z); } Then it occured to me that for the comparion of double values the simply equality approach is not very useful since double values should be compared with an error margin. What would be the best approach to introduce an error margin into the point? I thought about an epsDouble type as template parameter but I can't figure out how to achieve this.

  • GRUB 2 freezing at OS selection screen, what could be the cause?

    - by Michael Kjörling
Mains power is somewhat unreliable where I live, so every now and then, the computer gets rebooted when the PSU can't maintain proper voltage during a brown-out or momentary black-out. It's happened a few times recently that when power is restored, the BIOS POST completes successfully, GRUB starts to load and then freezes. I've seen this at the Welcome to GRUB! message, but it seems to happen more often just past the switch to the graphical OS list. At this point, the computer will not respond to anything (arrow keys, control commands, Ctrl+Alt+Del, ...) - it simply sits there displaying this image, seemingly doing nothing more. At that point, turning the computer off using the power button and letting it sit for a while (cooling down?) has allowed it to boot successfully. Turning the computer off and immediately back on seems to give the same result (successful POST then freeze in GRUB). This behavior began recently, although does not seem to be directly correlated with my hard disk woes (although it may be relevant that GRUB resides on that physical disk, I don't know). Once the computer has booted, it runs without a hitch. I know that a "proper" solution would be to invest in a UPS, but what might be causing behavior like this? I was thinking in terms of perhaps the CPU shutting down as a thermal control measure, but if that was the cause then wouldn't I see similar freezes during use (which I do not)? What else could cause freezes apparently closely but not perfectly related to the BIOS handover from POST to OS bootloader? The BIOS settings are to reset to previous power status after a power loss. Since the PC in question is almost always turned on, this means restore to full power status. I have no expansion cards installed that make any BIOS extensions known by screen output during the boot process, at least, but I do have a few expansion cards installed. Haven't made any changes in that regard in a long time, now. I haven't touched GRUB itself for a long time, whether configuration or binaries, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, it doesn't really make sense that a bug in GRUB would manifest itself only once in a blue moon but significantly more often after a power failure.

  • Exim 4 pipe select command/script from mysql db

    - by axel.klein
Is there an option to run a mysql lookup in the pipe driver of exim? MYSQL_Q_SCRIPT=SELECT script FROM MYSQL_EMAILTABLE WHERE domain='${quote_mysql:$domain}' AND local_part='${quote_mysql:$local_part}' command = "${lookup mysql {MYSQL_Q_SCRIPT}{$value} I am always getting an error like this: "Expansion of "${lookup" from command "${lookup mysql {SELECT script FROM emails WHERE domain='${quote_mysql:$domain}' AND local_part='${quote_mysql:$local_part}'}{$value}}" in run_script transport failed: missing lookup type" The problem is that exactly the same query works fine in the appenddriver. So I do not see the mistake.

  • 'rename' on files with apostrophes

    - by nomen
I'm trying to batch rename some files using the 'rename' utility. Unfortunately, the file names contain apostrophes, and it's messing things up. I'm not sure how to proceed. Here's what I've tried: rename -n '/.*(\d\d).jpg/Foo's Excellent Photo - $1.jpg/' # fails due to end of string rename -n '/.*(\d\d).jpg/Foo\'s Excellent Photo - $1.jpg/' # fails due to end of string rename -n "/.*(\d\d).jpg/Foo's Excellent Photo - $1.jpg/" # fails due to shell expansion Can anybody help?

  • SAS Array with or without expander

    - by tegbains
Is it better to use a SAS Expander backplane for 12 drives via one SAS connection or is it better to use a SAS backplane with 3 SAS connections? This is in terms of performance, rather than expansion. This array will be setup using ZFS on a OpenSolaris via a LSI SAS controller as an iSCSI target. The two products being considered are the SuperMicro SuperChassis 826A-R1200LPB or the SuperChassis 826E2-R800LPB

  • What's the point of 6.0GB/s SATA harddrives?

    - by earlz
So I've recently been seeing on the higher grade motherboards SATA 6.0gb/s ports. That's all fine and dandy. Extra room for expansion.. Now, my question is why are people already selling SATA 6.0GB/s port containing harddrives when it is already known that harddrives aren't even saturating 3.0GB/s(even server grade). What is the point of this?

  • Linux - quota per directory?

    - by depesz
I have following scenarios: Single partition mounted as /, with lots of disk space. There is a range of directories (/pg/tbs1, /pg/tbs2, /pg/tbs3 and so on), and I would like to limit total size of these directories. One option is to make some big files, and then mkfs them, and mount over loopback, and then set quota, but this makes expansion a bit problematic. Is there any other way to make the quota work per directory?

  • CreationName for SSIS 2008 and adding components programmatically

If you are building SSIS 2008 packages programmatically and adding data flow components, you will probably need to know the creation name of the component to add. I can never find a handy reference when I need one, hence this rather mundane post. See also CreationName for SSS 2005. We start with a very simple snippet for adding a component: // Add the Data Flow Task package.Executables.Add("STOCK:PipelineTask"); // Get the task host wrapper, and the Data Flow task TaskHost taskHost = package.Executables[0] as TaskHost; MainPipe dataFlowTask = (MainPipe)taskHost.InnerObject; // Add OLE-DB source component - ** This is where we need the creation name ** IDTSComponentMetaData90 componentSource = dataFlowTask.ComponentMetaDataCollection.New(); componentSource.Name = "OLEDBSource"; componentSource.ComponentClassID = "DTSAdapter.OLEDBSource.2"; So as you can see the creation name for a OLE-DB Source is DTSAdapter.OLEDBSource.2. • OWB 11gR2 &ndash; OLAP and Simba

    - by David Allan
Oracle Warehouse Builder was the first ETL product to provide a single integrated and complete environment for managing enterprise data warehouse solutions that also incorporate multi-dimensional schemas. The OWB 11gR2 release provides Oracle OLAP 11g deployment for multi-dimensional models (in addition to support for prior releases of OLAP). This means users can easily utilize Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see here for details and cost) which allows you to use the powerful and popular ad hoc query and analysis capabilities of Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts® with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data. The extensions to the dimensional modeling capabilities have been built on established relational concepts, with the option to seamlessly move from a relational deployment model to a multi-dimensional model at the click of a button. This now means that ETL designers can logically model a complete data warehouse solution using one single tool and control the physical implementation of a logical model at deployment time. As a result data warehouse projects that need to provide a multi-dimensional model as part of the overall solution can be designed and implemented faster and more efficiently. Wizards for dimensions and cubes let you quickly build dimensional models and realize either relationally or as an Oracle database OLAP implementation, both 10g and 11g formats are supported based on a configuration option. The wizard provides a good first cut definition and the objects can be further refined in the editor. Both wizards let you choose the implementation, to deploy to OLAP in the database select MOLAP: multidimensional storage. You will then be asked what levels and attributes are to be defined, by default the wizard creates a level bases hierarchy, parent child hierarchies can be defined in the editor. Once the dimension or cube has been designed there are special mapping operators that make it easy to load data into the objects, below we load a constant value for the total level and the other levels from a source table.   Again when the cube is defined using the wizard we can edit the cube and define a number of analytic calculations by using the 'generate calculated measures' option on the measures panel. This lets you very easily add a lot of rich analytic measures to your cube. For example one of the measures is the percentage difference from a year ago which we can see in detail below. You can also add your own custom calculations to leverage the capabilities of the Oracle OLAP option, either by selecting existing template types such as moving averages to defining true custom expressions. The 11g OLAP option now supports percentage based summarization (the amount of data to precompute and store), this is available from the option 'cost based aggregation' in the cube's configuration. Ensure all measure-dimensions level based aggregation is switched off (on the cube-dimension panel) - previously level based aggregation was the only option. The 11g generated code now uses the new unified API as you see below, to generate the code, OWB needs a valid connection to a real schema, this was not needed before 11gR2 and is a new requirement since the OLAP API which OWB uses is not an offline one. Once all of the objects are deployed and the maps executed then we get to the fun stuff! How can we analyze the data? One option which is powerful and at many users' fingertips is using Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts®, which can be used with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data by utilizing Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see Simba site for details of cost). I'll leave the exotic reporting illustrations to the experts (see Bud's demonstration here), but with Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP its very simple to easily access the analytics stored in the database (all built and loaded via the OWB 11gR2 release) and get the regular features of Excel at your fingertips such as using the conditional formatting features for example. That's a very quick run through of the OWB 11gR2 with respect to Oracle 11g OLAP integration and the reporting using Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP. Not a deep-dive in any way but a quick overview to illustrate the design capabilities and integrations possible.

  • SQL SERVER – What are Actions in SSAS and How to Make a Reporting Action

    - by Pinal Dave
Actions are used for customized browsing and drilling of data for the end-user. It’s an event that a user can raise while accessing the cube data. They are used in cube browsers like excel and are triggered when a user in a client tool clicks on a particular member, level, dimension, cells or may be the cube itself.  For example a user might be able to see a reporting services report, open a web page or drill through to detailed information related to the cube data. Analysis server supports 3 types of actions :- Report Drill-through Standard Actions In this blog post, I will explain the Reporting  action. The objective of this action is to return a report with details of the product where the sales amount is greater than 1000 in cube browser analysis. You need to create a basic cube first with the facts and dimensions you want in the analysis. Following are the steps to create reporting action. Go to SQL server data tools and open the analysis services project. Navigate to actions and click on new reporting action. 2.) Specify the name of the action and choose target type as attribute members since we have to create the action on members for a attribute. 3.) Specify the Target object of your report action. Target object would be the dimension or attribute on which you want the report to appear. In our case it is product name. 4.) Next you have to define the condition on which you want the report link to appear. However, this is an optional feature. In this example we are specifying a condition, which will check if the sales amount is greater than 10,000. So, that the link appears only for those products where the defined condition is met. 5.) Next you have to specify the server name on which the report is present, report path  and the report format in which you want the report to appear. 6.) Additionally you can specify the parameters. As with conditional expression, the parameters should be a valid MDX expression. The parameter name should be same as the one defined in the report. 7.) Deploy your solution after you are done with specifying parameters and go to the cube browser. 8.) Click on the analyze in excel button, this will open your cube in excel 9.) Make an analysis which shows product names and their sales amount. 10.) Right click on a product where sales amount is greater than 10000 you will see the reporting action link. Click on that and you will be taken to your reporting services report. 11.) Clicking on the link will take you to the URL of the report. I created this report using report project wizard in SQL server data tools. So, this is how we can launch reports from a cube browser. Similarly you can open web pages, run applications and a number of  other tasks. Koenig Solutions offers SSAS training which contains all Analysis Services including Reporting in great detail. In my next blog post I will talk about drill-through actions. Author: Namita Sharma, Senior Corporate Trainer at Koenig Solutions. • Best depth sorting method for a Top Down 2D game using a 3D physics engine

    - by Alic44
I've spent many days googling this and still have issues with my game engine I'd like to ask about, which I haven't seen addressed before. I think the problem is that my game is an unusual combination of a completely 2D graphical approach using XNA's SpriteBatch, and a completely 3D engine (the amazing BEPU physics engine) with rotation mostly disabled. In essence, my question is similar to this one (the part about "faux 3D"), but the difference is that in my game, the player as well as every other creature is represented by 3D objects, and they can all jump, pick up other objects, and throw them around. What this means is that sorting by one value, such as a Z position (how far north/south a character is on the screen) won't work, because as soon as a smaller creature jumps on top of a larger creature, or a box, and walks backwards, the moment its z value is less than that other creature, it will appear to be behind the object it is actually standing on. I actually originally solved this problem by splitting every object in the game into physics boxes which MUST have a Y height equal to their Z depth. I then based the depth sorting value on the object's y position (how high it is off the ground) PLUS its z position (how far north or south it is on the screen). The problem with this approach is that it requires all moving objects in the game to be split graphically into chunks which match up with a physical box which has its y dimension equal to its z dimension. Which is stupid. So, I got inspired last night to rewrite with a fresh approach. My new method is a little more complex, but I think a little more sane: every object which needs to be sorted by depth in the game exposes the interface IDepthDrawable and is added to a list owned by the DepthDrawer object. IDepthDrawable contains: public interface IDepthDrawable { Rectangle Bounds { get; } //possibly change this to a class if struct copying of the xna Rectangle type becomes an issue DepthDrawShape DepthShape { get; } void Draw(SpriteBatch spriteBatch); } The Bounds Rectangle of each IDepthDrawable object represents the 2D Axis-Aligned Bounding Box it will take up when drawn to the screen. Anything that doesn't intersect the screen will be culled at this stage and the remaining on-screen IDepthDrawables will be Bounds tested for intersections with each other. This is where I get a little less sure of what I'm doing. Each group of collisions will be added to a list or other collection, and each list will sort itself based on its DepthShape property, which will have access to the object-to-be-drawn's physics information. For starting out, lets assume everything in the game is an axis aligned 3D Box shape. Boxes are pretty easy to sort. Something like: if (depthShape1.Back > depthShape2.Front) //if depthShape1 is in front of depthShape2. //depthShape1 goes on top. else if (depthShape1.Bottom > depthShape2.Top) //if depthShape1 is above depthShape2. //depthShape1 goes on top. //if neither of these are true, depthShape2 must be in front or above. So, by sorting draw order by several different factors from the physics engine, I believe I can get a really correct draw order. My question is, is this a good way of going about this, or is there some tried and true, tested way which is completely different and has somehow completely eluded me on the internets? And, if this does seem like a good way to remake my draw order sorting, what's the right sorting algorithm for reordering the Bounds Rectangle collision lists, and how do you deal with a Bounds Rectangle colliding with two different object which don't collide with eachother. I know these are solved problems, but I've only been programming for a year so any specific input here will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading this far, ye who made it -- sorry it was so long!

  • JOGL2 test compiles, but doesn't execute - help?

  • Rotate a Swing JLabel

    - by Johannes Rössel
I am currently trying to implement a Swing component, inheriting from JLabel which should simply represent a label that can be oriented vertically. Beginning with this: public class RotatedLabel extends JLabel { public enum Direction { HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL_UP, VERTICAL_DOWN } private Direction direction; I thought it's be a nice idea to just alter the results from getPreferredSize(): @Override public Dimension getPreferredSize() { // swap size for vertical alignments switch (getDirection()) { case VERTICAL_UP: case VERTICAL_DOWN: return new Dimension(super.getPreferredSize().height, super .getPreferredSize().width); default: return super.getPreferredSize(); } } and then simply transform the Graphics object before I offload painting to the original JLabel: @Override protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) { Graphics2D gr = (Graphics2D) g.create(); switch (getDirection()) { case VERTICAL_UP: gr.translate0, getPreferredSize().getHeight()); gr.transform(AffineTransform.getQuadrantRotateInstance(-1)); break; case VERTICAL_DOWN: // TODO break; default: } super.paintComponent(gr); } } It seems to work—somehow—in that the text is now displayed vertically. However, placement and size are off: Actually, the width of the background (orange in this case) is identical with the height of the surrounding JFrame which is ... not quite what I had in mind. Any ideas how to solve that in a proper way? Is delegating rendering to superclasses even encouraged?

  • Variable number of two-dimensional arrays into one big array

    - by qlb
    I have a variable number of two-dimensional arrays. The first dimension is variable, the second dimension is constant. i.e.: Object[][] array0 = { {"tim", "sanchez", 34, 175.5, "bla", "blub", "[email protected]"}, {"alice", "smith", 42, 160.0, "la", "bub", "[email protected]"}, ... }; Object[][] array1 = { {"john", "sdfs", 34, 15.5, "a", "bl", "[email protected]"}, {"joe", "smith", 42, 16.0, "a", "bub", "[email protected]"}, ... }; ... Object[][] arrayi = ... I'm generating these arrays with a for-loop: for (int i = 0; i < filter.length; i++) { MyClass c = new MyClass(filter[i]); //data = c.getData(); } Where "filter" is another array which is filled with information that tells "MyClass" how to fill the arrays. "getData()" gives back one of the i number of arrays. Now I just need to have everything in one big two dimensional array. i.e.: Object[][] arrayComplete = { {"tim", "sanchez", 34, 175.5, "bla", "blub", "[email protected]"}, {"alice", "smith", 42, 160.0, "la", "bub", "[email protected]"}, ... {"john", "sdfs", 34, 15.5, "a", "bl", "[email protected]"}, {"joe", "smith", 42, 16.0, "a", "bub", "[email protected]"}, ... ... }; In the end, I need a 2D array to feed my Swing TableModel. Any idea on how to accomplish this? It's blowing my mind right now.

  • How to get the coordinate of Gridlayout

    - by Jessy
    Hi, I set my JPanel to GridLayout (6,6), with dimension (600,600) Each cell of the grid will display one pictures with different widths and heights. The picture first add to a JLabel, and the JLabel then added to the cells. How can retrieved the coordinate of the pictures in the cells and not the coordinate of cells? So far the out give these coordinate which equal height and width even on screen the pictures showed in different sizes. e.g. java.awt.Rectangle[x=100,y=100,width=100,height=100] java.awt.Rectangle[x=200,y=100,width=100,height=100] java.awt.Rectangle[x=300,y=100,width=100,height=100] The reason why I used GridLayout instead of gridBagLayout is that, I want each pictures to have boundary. If I use GridBagLayout, the grid will expand according to the picture size. I want grid size to be in fix size. JPanel pDraw = new JPanel(new GridLayout(6,6)); pDraw.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(600,600)); for (int i =0; i<(6*6); i++) { //get random number for height and width of the image int x = rand.nextInt(40)+(50); int y = rand.nextInt(40)+(50); ImageIcon icon = createImageIcon("bird.jpg"); //rescale the image according to the size selected Image img = icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(x,y,img.SCALE_SMOOTH); icon.setImage(img ); JLabel label = new JLabel(icon); pDraw.add(label); } for(Component component:components) { //retrieve the coordinate System.out.println(component.getBounds()); }

  • Subselecting with MDX

    - by Vince
Greetings stack overflow community. I've recently started building an OLAP cube in SSAS2008 and have gotten stuck. I would be grateful if someone could at least point me towards the right direction. Situation: Two fact tables, same cube. FactCalls holds information about calls made by subscribers, FactTopups holds topup data. Both tables have numerous common dimensions one of them being the Subscriber dimension. FactCalls             FactTopups SubscriberKey      SubscriberKey CallDuration         DateKey CallCost               Topup Value ... What I am trying to achieve is to be able to build FactCalls reports based on distinct subscribers that have topped up their accounts within the last 7 days. What I am basically looking for an MDX equivalent to SQL's: select * from FactCalls where SubscriberKey in ( select distinct SubscriberKey from FactTopups where ... ); I've tried creating a degenerate dimension for both tables containing SubscriberKey and doing: Exist( [Calls Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children, [Topups Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children ) Without success. Kind regards, Vince

  • SSAS Cube reprocessing fails - then succeeds if I try again

    - by EdgarVerona
So I'm basically brand new to the concept of BI, and I've inherited an existing ETL process that is a two step process: 1) Loads the data into a database that is only used by the cube processing 2) Starts off the SSAS cube processing against said database It seems pretty well isolated, but occasionally (once a week, sometimes twice) it will fail with the following exception: "Errors in the OLAP storage engine: The attribute key cannot be found" Now the interesting thing is that: 1) The dimension having the issue is not usually the same one (i.e. there's no single dimension that consistently has this failure) 2) The source table, when I inspect it, does actually contain the attribute key that it says could not be found And, most interestingly... 3) If I then immediately reprocess the dimensions and cubes manually through SSMS, they reprocess successfully and without incident. In both the aforementioned job and when I reprocess them through SSMS, I am using "ProcessFull", so it should be reprocessing them completely. Has anyone run into such an issue? I'm scratching my head about it... because if it was a genuine data integrity issue, reprocessing the cube again wouldn't fix it. What on earth could be happening? I've been tasked with finding out why this happens, but I can neither reproduce it consistently nor can I point to a data integrity problem as the root cause. Thanks for any input you can provide!

  • initialising a 2-dim Array in Scala

    - by Stefan W.
(Scala 2.7.7:) I don't get used to 2d-Arrays. Arrays are mutable, but how do I specify a 2d-Array which is - let's say of size 3x4. The dimension (2D) is fixed, but the size per dimension shall be initializable. I tried this: class Field (val rows: Int, val cols: Int, sc: java.util.Scanner) { var field = new Array [Char](rows)(cols) for (r <- (1 to rows)) { val line = sc.nextLine () val spl = line.split (" ") field (r) = spl.map (_.charAt (0)) } def put (val rows: Int, val cols: Int, c: Char) = todo () } I get this error: :11: error: value update is not a member of Char field (r) = spl.map (_.charAt (0)) If it would be Java, it would be much more code, but I would know how to do it, so I show what I mean: public class Field { private char[][] field; public Field (int rows, int cols, java.util.Scanner sc) { field = new char [rows][cols]; for (int r = 0; r < rows; ++r) { String line = sc.nextLine (); String[] spl = line.split (" "); for (int c = 0; c < cols; ++c) field [r][c] = spl[c].charAt (0); } } public static void main (String args[]) { new Field (3, 4, new java.util.Scanner ("fraese.fld")); } } and fraese.fld would look, for example, like that: M M M M . M I get some steps wide with val field = new Array Array [Char] but how would I then implement 'put'? Or is there a better way to implement the 2D-Array. Yes, I could use a one-dim-Array, and work with put (y, x, c) = field (y * width + x) = c but I would prefer a notation which looks more 2d-ish.

  • drawing to a JPanel without inheritance

    - by g.rocket
Right now I'm working on a program that throws up a bunch of separate (generated at runtime) images, each in their own window. To do this i've tried this approach: public void display(){ JFrame window = new JFrame("NetPart"); JPanel canvas = new JPanel(); window.getContentPane().add(canvas); Graphics g = canvas.getGraphics(); Dimension d = getSize(); System.out.println(d); draw(g,new Point(d.minX*50,d.maxY*50), 50); window.setSize(d.size(50)); window.setResizable(false); window.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.HIDE_ON_CLOSE); window.setVisible(true); } public void draw(Graphics g, Point startLoc, int scale){ // generate and draw the image } public Dimension getSize(){ //returns my own dimensions class } However, this throws a NullPointerException in draw, claiming that the graphics is null. is there any way to externally draw to a JPanel from outside it (not inherit from JPanel and override PaintComponent)? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Improving my first Clojure program

    - by StackedCrooked
After a few weekends exploring Clojure I came up with this program. It allows you to move a little rectangle in a window. Here's the code: (import java.awt.Color) (import java.awt.Dimension) (import java.awt.event.KeyListener) (import javax.swing.JFrame) (import javax.swing.JPanel) (def x (ref 0)) (def y (ref 0)) (def panel (proxy [JPanel KeyListener] [] (getPreferredSize [] (Dimension. 100 100)) (keyPressed [e] (let [keyCode (.getKeyCode e)] (if (== 37 keyCode) (dosync (alter x dec)) (if (== 38 keyCode) (dosync (alter y dec)) (if (== 39 keyCode) (dosync (alter x inc)) (if (== 40 keyCode) (dosync (alter y inc)) (println keyCode))))))) (keyReleased [e]) (keyTyped [e]))) (doto panel (.setFocusable true) (.addKeyListener panel)) (def frame (JFrame. "Test")) (doto frame (.add panel) (.pack) (.setDefaultCloseOperation JFrame/EXIT_ON_CLOSE) (.setVisible true)) (defn drawRectangle [p] (doto (.getGraphics p) (.setColor (java.awt.Color/WHITE)) (.fillRect 0 0 100 100) (.setColor (java.awt.Color/BLUE)) (.fillRect (* 10 (deref x)) (* 10 (deref y)) 10 10))) (loop [] (drawRectangle panel) (Thread/sleep 10) (recur)) Despite being an experienced C++ programmer I found it very challenging to write even a simple application in a language that uses a radically different style than what I'm used to. On top of that, this code probably sucks. I suspect the globalness of the various values is a bad thing. It's also not clear to me if it's appropriate to use references here for the x and y values. Any hints for improving this code are welcome.

  • Problem painting JLabel class to another JPanel class

    - by jjpotter
I have created a class that extends JLabel to use as my object moving around a JPanel for a game. import javax.swing.*; public class Head extends JLabel { int xpos; int ypos; int xvel; int yvel; ImageIcon chickie = new ImageIcon("C:\\Users\\jjpotter.MSDOM1\\Pictures\\clavalle.jpg"); JLabel myLabel = new JLabel(chickie); public Head(int xpos, int ypos, int xvel, int yvel){ this.xpos = xpos; this.ypos = ypos; this.xvel = xvel; this.yvel = yvel; } public void draw(){ myLabel.setLocation(xpos, ypos); } public double getXpos() { return xpos; } public double getYpos() { return ypos; } public int getXvel() { return xvel; } public int getYvel() { return yvel; } public void setPos(int x, int y){ xpos = x; ypos = y; } } I am then trying to add it onto my JPanel. From here I will randomly have it increment its x and y coordinates to float it around the screen. I can not get it to paint itself onto the JPanel. I know there is a key concept I am missing here that involves painting components on different panels. Here is what I have in my GamePanel class import java.awt.Dimension; import java.util.Random; import javax.swing.*; public class GamePanel extends JPanel { Random myRand = new Random(); Head head = new Head(20,20,0,0); public GamePanel(){ this.setSize(new Dimension(640, 480)); this.add(head); } } Any suggestions on how to get this to add to the JPanel? Also, is this a good way to go about having the picture float around the screen randomly for a game?

  • What algorithm can I use to determine points within a semi-circle?

    - by khayman218
I have a list of two-dimensional points and I want to obtain which of them fall within a semi-circle. Originally, the target shape was a rectangle aligned with the x and y axis. So the current algorithm sorts the pairs by their X coord and binary searches to the first one that could fall within the rectangle. Then it iterates over each point sequentially. It stops when it hits one that is beyond both the X and Y upper-bound of the target rectangle. This does not work for a semi-circle as you cannot determine an effective upper/lower x and y bounds for it. The semi-circle can have any orientation. Worst case, I will find the least value of a dimension (say x) in the semi-circle, binary search to the first point which is beyond it and then sequentially test the points until I get beyond the upper bound of that dimension. Basically testing an entire band's worth of points on the grid. The problem being this will end up checking many points which are not within the bounds.
